To enable AMD FSR 4, first confirm that your game, Radeon GPU and Adrenalin driver meet AMD’s requirements. Then use one of two paths: turn on the game’s native FSR option, or—where AMD supports a driver upgrade—close the game, enable AMD FSR Upscaling in AMD Software: Adrenalin Edition, relaunch the game, and select the FSR 3.1 quality mode in its graphics menu. FSR 4 is now called FSR Upscaling inside AMD’s broader FSR “Redstone” feature set, so a supported title may use either label.
What AMD FSR 4 is called now
AMD renamed FSR 4 to FSR Upscaling to distinguish it from the other technologies in the FSR “Redstone” suite. AMD’s exact wording is: “FSR 4 has been renamed FSR Upscaling to better distinguish between the various features that now make up FSR ‘Redstone’.” A game menu can therefore still say “FSR 4,” while AMD Software and newer documentation say “FSR Upscaling.” In this guide, those names refer to the machine-learning upscaler unless a section explicitly discusses another Redstone feature.
FSR Upscaling reconstructs a higher-resolution image from a lower internal render resolution. The quality preset you choose in the game controls that internal resolution and the resulting balance between image detail and frame rate. It is separate from frame generation: enabling the upscaler does not automatically mean that generated frames are active.
Check compatibility before changing settings
AMD maintains a supported-games list because availability depends on the individual title’s integration, the requested feature and the driver branch. Check that list for the exact game and read the entry for the feature you want. A title can support FSR Upscaling but not driver-upgraded frame generation, or it can require a particular FSR 3.1 revision.

- Axial-tech fans now feature a smaller fan hub that facilitates longer blades and a barrier ring that increases downward air pressure
- 2.5-slot design allows for greater build compatibility while maintaining cooling performance
- 0dB technology lets you enjoy light gaming in relative silence
- Dual BIOS switch lets you toggle between Quiet and Performance BIOS profiles
- Dual ball fan bearings last up to twice as long as sleeve bearing designs
- Game: The title must appear on AMD’s current supported-games list, or it must expose a native FSR option that AMD documents for that release.
- GPU: AMD lists Radeon RX 7000 and RX 9000 Series graphics cards for ML-based FSR Upscaling. The wider Redstone feature set has more restrictive compatibility, so do not assume that every Redstone feature works on every card that can upscale.
- Driver: For Redstone support on RX 9000 Series, the supported-games list specifies Adrenalin 25.12.1 or later. For upscaling-only use on RX 7000 Series, it specifies Adrenalin 26.6.2 or later.
- Existing integration: Driver-upgrade titles must already contain qualifying FSR integration. The driver cannot add FSR to an arbitrary game.
- Game state: The driver-upgrade switch is applied before launch, so the game must be completely closed while you enable it.
These requirements are feature-specific and can change as AMD adds titles or revises drivers. A supported GPU that is already running the required driver is sufficient; the setup procedure itself does not require buying a new graphics card.
Choose the correct enablement route
There are two legitimate ways to turn on FSR Upscaling. Use the one AMD documents for your game rather than enabling every toggle you can find.
| Route | Where the switch lives | What the game must contain | Typical sequence |
|---|---|---|---|
| Native game integration | The game’s Graphics, Video or Display menu | A native ML-based FSR integration exposed by the title | Open the game menu, select FSR 4 or FSR Upscaling, then choose a quality preset |
| AMD driver upgrade | AMD Software: Adrenalin Edition, under Gaming > Graphics | Supported FSR 3.1 upscaling integration; driver-upgraded ML frame generation requires FSR 3.1.4 | Close the game, enable AMD FSR Upscaling in Adrenalin, launch the game, enable FSR 3.1 if needed, then choose quality in-game |
The AMD Software switch is not universal. It appears only for games and hardware combinations that AMD supports through the driver-upgrade route. If AMD’s game entry describes native enablement, configure the title itself instead.
Enable FSR 4 through the game’s native menu
Use this path when AMD identifies the title as having native ML-based FSR integration. Menu labels differ by game, but the controls are normally under a graphics, video, display or upscaling section.
- Update and verify first. Install an Adrenalin version that meets the game’s entry on AMD’s supported-games list, then restart Windows if the installer requests it.
- Launch the game. Open its main menu and select Settings, Options or Graphics.
- Find the upscaling control. Look for Upscaler, Super Resolution, FSR 4 or FSR Upscaling. It may be inside an advanced graphics submenu.
- Select the AMD mode. Choose FSR 4 or FSR Upscaling, not a similarly named temporal or vendor-neutral mode.
- Pick a quality preset. Start with the game’s Quality option, apply the change and inspect a busy scene. Move to Balanced or Performance only if you need more speed and the image remains acceptable.
- Restart if prompted. Some engines load their upscaler only when a level or the whole game is restarted. If the game asks for a restart, accept it before judging the result.
Do not also enable the Adrenalin driver-upgrade toggle unless AMD’s entry specifically instructs you to do so. Stacking a native implementation with a driver override can hide the game’s intended controls or produce an unsupported configuration.

Enable FSR 4 with AMD Software’s driver upgrade
This route is for supported games that already implement FSR 3.1 and can be upgraded by the Radeon driver. The order matters: enable the driver option while the game is closed, then select the in-game FSR mode.
- Close the game completely. Exit to the desktop. If it remains in Task Manager, end the game process before continuing.
- Open AMD Software: Adrenalin Edition. Use the Windows Start menu or the Radeon icon in the notification area.
- Open the graphics controls. Select Gaming in the navigation, then choose Graphics.
- Enable the driver feature. Turn on AMD FSR Upscaling. If the supported-game entry also documents driver-upgraded frame generation and you want it, turn on AMD FSR Frame Generation as well. Do not enable frame generation simply because the switch is visible.
- Launch the supported game. Open the title after saving or applying the Adrenalin setting.
- Enable FSR 3.1 in the game. In the Graphics or Video menu, set the upscaler to FSR 3.1 if it is not already enabled. The driver upgrade works on that existing integration; it does not replace the game’s entire rendering path.
- Choose the quality mode in the game. Select Quality, Balanced, Performance or another preset offered by the title. The game’s own menu controls this choice.
- Apply and restart when required. If the title reloads shaders or requests a restart, let it finish before testing.
AMD recommends Radeon Anti-Lag 2 only in games that support Anti-Lag 2. Treat it as an optional, title-specific latency feature, not as a prerequisite for FSR Upscaling or frame generation.

GPU and driver requirements by feature
“FSR 4 support” is not one universal hardware promise. The card and minimum driver depend on whether you want ML-based upscaling alone or the wider Redstone feature set.
| Requested capability | GPU information AMD lists | Minimum driver stated in the supported-games guidance | Integration requirement |
|---|---|---|---|
| ML-based FSR Upscaling | Radeon RX 7000 and RX 9000 Series | RX 7000 upscaling-only use: Adrenalin 26.6.2 or later; follow the game entry for other combinations | Native game integration or an eligible FSR 3.1 integration for driver upgrade |
| Broader FSR “Redstone” support on RX 9000 Series | Radeon RX 9000 Series, subject to the individual feature | Adrenalin 25.12.1 or later | Only titles and features listed by AMD |
| Driver-upgraded ML frame generation | Use the hardware listed for the specific game and feature; broader Redstone compatibility is more restrictive than upscaling | Adrenalin 25.12.1 or later for the RX 9000 Redstone path, unless AMD’s entry states otherwise | The game must contain FSR 3.1.4 or later integration |
The table reflects AMD’s published minimums for the described paths, not a guarantee that every RX 7000 or RX 9000 model supports every Redstone feature. Always match the exact GPU, driver and game entry. If your card is outside the listed requirements, changing a menu setting will not create support; an upgrade is relevant only in that situation.
What to do when FSR 4 is missing
A missing option usually indicates a compatibility, integration or configuration mismatch. Follow these branches instead of repeatedly reinstalling the game.

The game is not on AMD’s current supported-games list
Do not assume that a similarly named title or an older release is covered. Verify the exact game edition and platform entry. If AMD does not list it and the game does not expose a native FSR Upscaling control, the driver-upgrade path is not documented for that title.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →The game is listed, but there is no Adrenalin per-game profile
Per-game controls can depend on the installed driver and on whether the title is detected. Confirm that you launched the game at least once, close it, restart AMD Software and check Gaming again. If the title remains absent, use the native game-menu route when AMD documents one; do not force a global override as a substitute for a supported profile.
AMD’s technical-preview notes recorded a global-graphics-settings workaround for Blades of Fire, Dragonkin and Stellar Blade. Those notes were preview-era guidance, not a permanent rule. Check the current release notes before applying that workaround, because title coverage and menu behavior can change.
The game has FSR, but only an older version
The driver-upgrade list requires at least FSR 3.1 for upscaling. Driver-upgraded ML-based frame generation requires FSR 3.1.4. If the game exposes FSR 2.x or an earlier FSR 3 revision only, update the game if an update is available; otherwise the driver path may not appear or may not support the requested feature.
The AMD FSR Upscaling switch is unavailable
- Confirm that the game is closed before opening Gaming > Graphics.
- Check that the installed Adrenalin version meets the requirement for your GPU and feature.
- Verify that the title is one of the games eligible for a driver upgrade, rather than a native-only title.
- Remove conflicting per-game overrides, apply the global setting only when AMD’s current instructions call for it, and relaunch the game.
The switch is enabled, but the in-game option still does not appear
The driver upgrade does not replace the game’s required integration. Open the game’s graphics menu and look for its FSR 3.1 control. If no FSR control exists, the title may not have the qualifying integration, may require a patch, or may be using a mode that hides advanced upscalers until a supported display resolution is selected. Verify the game’s own patch notes and AMD’s current entry rather than selecting an unrelated sharpening option.

Frame generation is missing or disabled
Upscaling and frame generation are separate. Confirm that the game contains FSR 3.1.4 or later for driver-upgraded ML frame generation, that your GPU is eligible for the broader feature and that the title is listed for frame generation specifically. A game can expose FSR Upscaling while excluding frame generation.
The image looks soft, shimmers or shows unexpected artifacts
- Return to the Quality preset and compare a stationary scene with moving foliage, fine fences or text.
- Make sure only one upscaler is active. Disable a second temporal upscaler or an external resolution scaler.
- Check that the game’s render resolution and output resolution are not being changed by a separate dynamic-resolution option.
- Update the game and driver if AMD lists an image-quality fix for that title.
- If artifacts begin immediately after a driver change, disable the driver override, test the native game integration and report the title-specific behavior through the game or AMD support channel.
How to choose a quality preset
FSR Upscaling quality modes trade internal render resolution for output detail. The exact scale factors and names can vary by engine, so use the labels supplied by the game rather than assuming that every title implements them identically.
| Preset | Use it when | What to watch |
|---|---|---|
| Quality | You want the safest starting point and have enough GPU headroom | Fine detail, edges and motion should remain stable; this is the baseline for judging the feature |
| Balanced | You need additional performance but want to retain moderate image detail | Inspect foliage, hair, thin geometry and distant signage for shimmer |
| Performance | You are GPU-limited and accept a softer image for higher frame rates | Lower internal resolution can make moving detail and UI elements look less defined |
Change one setting at a time and use the same scene or built-in benchmark when comparing modes. Avoid treating a company performance claim as a measurement of your own system; frame rate depends on resolution, CPU load, game patch, settings and the particular GPU.
Frame generation, latency and display settings
Frame generation creates additional displayed frames from rendered frames, but it does not replace the underlying upscaler. Enable it only when AMD lists the game and your hardware for that feature. Keep the game’s base frame rate stable before enabling generation; an unstable input can make generated motion feel uneven even when the displayed counter is higher.

AMD recommends it only in titles that support it, so do not enable a generic latency override and assume it is equivalent. If a game supports Anti-Lag 2, follow that title’s instructions and test input response with and without it.
Safe testing and rollback
- Record the original upscaler, resolution, frame-generation and latency settings.
- Apply FSR Upscaling with the game closed if you are using the driver route.
- Test a repeatable scene for several minutes, checking both image quality and frame pacing.
- If the game crashes, shows severe artifacts or loses its graphics menu, exit the game and disable AMD FSR Upscaling in Gaming > Graphics.
- Relaunch and restore the native game setting or the previous upscaler. A clean game restart is preferable to changing multiple driver options while the title is running.
Because driver-upgrade behavior is title-specific, keep the override disabled for games that are not listed. Re-enable it only after confirming the current AMD entry and the required driver version.
Quick checklist
- Identify whether the title uses native FSR Upscaling or an AMD driver upgrade.
- Check the current AMD supported-games list for the exact game and requested feature.
- Confirm your RX 7000 or RX 9000 hardware is eligible for that feature.
- Install the required Adrenalin version: 25.12.1 or later for the stated RX 9000 Redstone path, or 26.6.2 or later for RX 7000 upscaling-only use.
- For the driver route, close the game before opening Gaming > Graphics and enabling AMD FSR Upscaling.
- Launch the game, enable FSR 3.1 in its Graphics or Video menu and select the quality preset.
- Use FSR 3.1.4 or later only when enabling driver-upgraded ML frame generation.
- Use Radeon Anti-Lag 2 only when the game supports it.
- If a control is missing, verify integration and feature-specific compatibility before changing global settings.
Final answer
For a native title, enable FSR 4 or FSR Upscaling directly in the game and choose a quality mode. For a driver-upgrade title, close the game, enable AMD FSR Upscaling under AMD Software: Adrenalin Edition > Gaming > Graphics, relaunch, then select FSR 3.1 and the desired preset in-game. The supported-games list, your exact Radeon feature support and the minimum Adrenalin version determine whether either path is available.
