Godlike.Host offers hosted Unturned servers with its own game panel, SFTP access and free DDoS protection, if you would rather not host it yourself.
To make an Unturned server friends-only, stop the server, add Whitelisted to U3DSServers<ServerName>ServerCommands.dat, place each allowed player’s SteamID64 on its own line in Whitelist.dat in that same directory, then save and restart. Verify the result with one listed account and one unlisted account.
What an Unturned whitelist does
A whitelist changes join permission: only players listed as permitted can connect. The Whitelisted startup command turns that restriction on; Whitelist.dat contains the accounts that are allowed through it.
This controls access, not whether other players can discover or reach the server over the Internet. Internet hosting has separate requirements, including a Game Server Login Token (GSLT) and either Fake IP or port forwarding.
Files and commands you need

The two files belong to the active server profile, not necessarily the folder where the game server executable was installed. A typical path is U3DSServers<ServerName>Server.

Enable the whitelist with files
1. Stop the server cleanly
Shut down the server before changing its configuration. The official setup guidance notes that most settings cannot be configured safely while the server is open. A clean stop also prevents the running process from overwriting or ignoring your edits.
2. Open the active profile’s Server folder
Navigate to:
U3DSServers<ServerName>ServerReplace <ServerName> with the name of the profile that your startup process actually loads. If you operate several worlds or profiles, confirm the name rather than editing the first similarly named folder you find.

Open Commands.dat with a plain-text editor. Put this command on its own line:
WhitelistedCommands.dat is the file used for basic server commands, with one command per line. Preserve that format: do not join the whitelist command to another command on the same line, and check the spelling and capitalization of Whitelisted.

4. Add allowed Steam accounts to Whitelist.dat
In the same Server directory, open Whitelist.dat. Enter every permitted player’s SteamID64 on a separate line. For example, the file should be a plain list rather than a comma-separated value or a list with labels:

7656119YYYYYYYYYYThe values above are only a layout illustration; replace them with the verified SteamID64 for each person you intend to allow. Check every digit before saving. A single incorrect ID will not match the player’s account.

5. Save both files and restart
Save Commands.dat and Whitelist.dat, then start the server again. Configuration edits are not considered active merely because the files were saved; the server must load them during startup.
After the restart, test the policy rather than relying on the file contents alone. Connect with one account whose SteamID64 is listed, then attempt a connection with an account that is not listed. The first should be allowed and the second should be refused by the whitelist.

Manage permitted players while the server is running
If an administrator is available, the command reference provides runtime management. Enter commands in the Server Console, or use in-game chat with an @ or / prefix.
Add a player with Permit
Use:
Permit [SteamID]/[Tag]Supply the player’s SteamID or tag in the format accepted by the server. Runtime commands are useful when you need to grant access without stopping the server, such as admitting a friend who is waiting to join.

Run:
PermitsThis displays the permitted players recognized by the server. Use it to confirm that an addition was accepted and to check the server’s live state before asking the player to reconnect.
Understand runtime persistence
The documentation describes Permit and Permits as runtime commands, while Commands.dat and Whitelist.dat are the startup files. It does not establish in the cited material whether every runtime change survives a restart. If access must remain available after a restart, record the intended SteamID64 in Whitelist.dat and verify the result on the next launch instead of assuming a live change is permanent.

For a planned, repeatable friends-only setup, configure the files. For an immediate one-player change, use Permit and then confirm with Permits.

If runtime commands do not work
Chat commands are restricted to administrators. If an @– or /-prefixed command is ignored or rejected, first verify that the account has administrator privileges and that you are connected to the intended server instance. The Server Console is an alternative entry point when you have console access.
The official administration guidance documents three ways to grant administrative access:
- Place a SteamID64 in an
Ownercommand entry. - Run the
Admincommand during runtime. - Use
Adminlist.dat.
Grant only the access needed to manage the server. After changing administration, reconnect or restart as appropriate, then retry Permit or Permits.

Troubleshooting whitelist access
The whitelist appears to have no effect
- Confirm that
Whitelistedis present in theCommands.datloaded by the active profile. - Check that it is spelled and capitalized correctly and occupies its own line.
- Stop and restart the server after every file edit.
- Test with both a listed and an unlisted account so you observe both sides of the rule.
A listed player is denied
- Verify that the entry is the player’s correct SteamID64, not a display name, nickname, or shorter account identifier.
- Make sure the ID is on its own line in
Whitelist.dat. - Check that
Whitelist.datis in the same activeServerdirectory asCommands.dat. - Restart after correcting the entry, then test again with that account.
An unlisted player can still join
- Confirm that the server was restarted after adding
Whitelisted. - Inspect the profile path for multiple server installations or world names; editing an unused profile does not change the running server.
- Check that the connecting player is genuinely using an account absent from
Whitelist.dat. - Use
Permitsat runtime to see whether the server has separately recognized that account as permitted.
The files are missing
First confirm that you are in U3DSServers<ServerName>Server for the profile that starts. If you have not yet created or started that profile, launch it once and stop it cleanly before looking for its configuration files. Do not create or edit a similarly named folder until you have matched it to the profile used by the server startup process.
Commands work in the console but not in chat
Use the console directly, or verify administrator privileges on the chat account. In-game chat commands require the documented @ or / prefix; entering the bare command as ordinary chat text will not invoke it.
Whitelist access is separate from Internet hosting
A correctly configured whitelist does not publish a private server or make it reachable from outside your network. Internet availability is a separate setup task. The official setup guidance identifies a Game Server Login Token and either Fake IP or port forwarding as requirements for Internet hosting.
Treat these as two independent checks:
- Access control:
Whitelistedplus the permitted SteamID64 entries determines who may join. - Reachability: the server’s Internet configuration determines whether players can find and connect to it at all.
A server can therefore be Internet-reachable but closed to everyone except listed players, or correctly whitelisted but unreachable because its hosting prerequisites are incomplete.
Safe operating procedure for future changes
- Write down the server profile name before editing anything.
- Stop that server cleanly.
- Open the matching
Serverdirectory. - Keep
Whitelistedon its own line inCommands.dat. - Keep one verified SteamID64 per line in
Whitelist.dat. - Save both files, start the same profile, and wait for startup to complete.
- Test one permitted and one unpermitted account.
- For live additions, run
Permitas an administrator and confirm withPermits; make the file change as well when the access must be retained after a restart.
This sequence catches the most common causes of failure: editing the wrong profile, placing the command or ID on the wrong line, using an incorrect SteamID64, and forgetting the restart that loads configuration.
