Godlike.Host offers hosted Conan Exiles servers with its own game panel, SFTP access and free DDoS protection, if you would rather not host it yourself.
To enable a custom map on a Conan Exiles dedicated server, install the map’s .pak file in ConanSandbox/Mods/, list that exact filename in ConanSandbox/Mods/modlist.txt, restart the server, and make every player install and activate the identical map and dependency mods in the identical order. A filename mismatch, different mod version, incorrect load order, blocked download port, or an unprepared client can prevent connections or cause the map to fail during loading.
Funcom’s technical manual defines a Conan Exiles mod as one .pak archive containing modified or new game assets. Funcom also confirms that, since Update 2.0, Steam players can create and run custom maps. The manual was published in 2020, so verify compatibility with your current server build and the map author’s notes before changing a live world.

- A Conan Exiles dedicated server running a game build supported by the map.
- The map’s
.pakfile, obtained from Steam Workshop or the map author’s distribution. - Every dependency mod listed by the map author.
- Access to the server’s files, or a hosting control panel that can install Workshop mods and edit the mod list.
- A recent backup of the current save before replacing an active map, removing a mod, or changing the load order.
Custom maps are mods, not ordinary save files. Installing only a map archive while omitting a required dependency can produce a loading error even when the map file itself is in the right directory.
Install the map on a self-hosted dedicated server
1. Confirm compatibility and collect the files
Read the map author’s installation instructions first. Check the supported Conan Exiles build, required dependencies, required load position, and whether the author distributes the map through Steam Workshop or as a downloadable archive. Do not rename the .pak file unless the author explicitly permits it; the name in the mod list must match the file on disk exactly.

If the download arrives in a compressed archive, extract it so that the actual .pak file—not a .zip, .rar, or nested folder—is available for the server to read.
2. Copy the .pak file to the Mods directory
Stop the server before changing its files. Open the dedicated server installation and navigate to:

Copy every dependency mod there as well. Funcom’s technical manual identifies this as the dedicated-server location for Conan Exiles mod archives. If your provider uses a different installation root, locate the server’s ConanSandbox directory rather than creating a second directory elsewhere.

3. Create or edit modlist.txt
In the same ConanSandbox/Mods/ directory, create modlist.txt if it does not exist. Add one mod filename per line, including the extension. For example:
DependencyMod.pak
CustomMap.pakUse the order specified by the map author. If you already have a working client installation, copying its mod list to the dedicated server can reduce typing errors, but inspect the result and remove entries for mods that are not installed on the server. Keep the intended order; changing it can alter how assets and dependencies are loaded.
4. Restart and watch the server log
Save the file, start the server, and wait for a complete startup. A restart is required after changing the mod list; a running process will not reliably re-read newly added archives. Review the startup log for missing files, duplicate entries, or load errors before asking players to connect.

Set up a custom map with a managed host panel
A managed host can automate file placement and mod-list editing, but the underlying requirements do not change. The panel still has to install the correct archive, preserve the required order, and restart the server.
Typical panel workflow
- Stop the Conan Exiles server from the provider’s control panel.
- Open the panel’s Conan Exiles mod or Workshop section.
- Find the custom map by its Workshop entry, or upload the supplied
.pakfile using the panel’s file manager. - Install every dependency named by the map author.
- Open the panel’s mod-order editor and place the map at the position required by its documentation. A provider example for Savage Wilds demonstrates that a named map can require a specific position; there is no universal position that works for every map.
- Save the configuration and restart the server.
- Check the server console or log for a successful mod load before sharing the server address.
Panel labels vary by host and can change over time. If a Workshop installer does not expose the required load order, use the panel’s file manager or configuration editor to inspect modlist.txt directly.
Prepare every player’s Conan Exiles client
A dedicated server cannot make an incompatible client work. Every player must have the same custom map, the same dependencies, compatible versions, and the same order enabled in the game’s Mods screen.

- Subscribe to the map and each dependency in Steam Workshop, or install the files through the map author’s supported distribution method.
- Launch Conan Exiles and open the Mods screen.
- Enable the map and all dependencies.
- Reorder the entries to match the server’s
modlist.txt, following the map author’s instructions where they override a general order. - Apply the changes and restart the game if the client requests it.
Funcom states that Steam players can enable and reorder mods from the Mods screen and can create or load custom maps. A player who has an old copy of the .pak, a missing dependency, or a different order should update the installation before connecting.
Enable automatic mod downloads
Automatic downloads can make onboarding easier, but they require a reachable download port and matching firewall rules. Funcom identifies the ModFileDownload.DownloadPortOffset setting in Engine.ini as controlling the mod-download port.
The relevant section is:
[/Script/ConanSandbox.SystemSettings]
ModFileDownload.DownloadPortOffset=...Use the value configured for your server and expose the resulting port through the host firewall, router, and any cloud security group. The exact external port depends on the server’s base configuration and offset, so do not assume that the game query or gameplay port is also the download port. After changing Engine.ini, restart the server and test from a client that does not already have the map installed.

Use the distribution channel supported by the author. Do not combine an outdated external archive with a newer Workshop dependency unless the author says those versions are compatible.

The server starts without the map
- Confirm the archive is directly in
ConanSandbox/Mods/, not in a subfolder. - Check that the file extension is really
.pakand that the operating system has not hidden a second extension such as.pak.zip. - Compare the filename character-for-character with the corresponding line in
modlist.txt, including capitalization and punctuation. - Verify that the server was restarted after the file and list were changed.
- Read the startup log for a missing dependency or an archive load error.
Players receive a mod mismatch or cannot connect
- Compare the server’s
modlist.txtwith each client’s enabled list. - Make sure every client has the same versions, not merely files with similar names.
- Check the order on both sides; a different order can prevent connection or break map loading.
- Have players unsubscribe and resubscribe or replace stale external files when the author has released an update.
- Remove duplicate copies of the same mod from a client’s installation before trying again.
The map loads but assets or areas are missing
- Recheck the map’s dependency list and install every required archive.
- Restore the author’s specified order rather than placing the map in a guessed position.
- Confirm that the server and clients are on the game build supported by the map release.
- Test with only the map and its documented dependencies if another mod may be overriding the same assets.
Automatic downloads fail
- Confirm the
ModFileDownload.DownloadPortOffsetentry is under[/Script/ConanSandbox.SystemSettings]in the activeEngine.ini. - Calculate the resulting download port from your server’s base port and offset.
- Allow that port through the operating-system firewall, router, and hosting-provider firewall.
- Test from a client that does not already have the map, because an installed client does not prove that downloading works.
- If the port cannot be exposed, distribute the map through Workshop or another author-supported method and have players install it before joining.
Safely replacing an existing map
Changing a live map is a save-management operation, not just a mod installation. Stop the server and make a dated backup of the save and current mod configuration first. Record the existing modlist.txt, map name, and game build. Then install the new map, apply the documented order, and restart.
If the replacement fails, stop the server before making further changes. Restore the backed-up save and prior mod list, reinstall the original mod versions, and follow the map author’s rollback instructions. The available technical guidance does not establish a universal rollback guarantee for every custom map, so do not assume that removing a map will preserve or convert an active world safely.
