A Gotek-style USB floppy emulator replaces the original floppy mechanism by presenting a disk-image file as if it were a physical floppy disk. To make it work, you must match the host computer’s floppy interface and drive-select expectation, install or identify the firmware, format a USB stick in the filesystem that firmware supports, copy compatible disk images, and select an image with the emulator’s buttons, display, or indexed slots.

The exact jumper, cable, firmware, image format, and selection method depend on the host machine and whether the Gotek runs FlashFloppy or HxC firmware. Treat the host-specific service manual and the installed firmware’s documentation as authoritative rather than assuming one jumper layout works everywhere.

What a Gotek emulator actually does

A conventional floppy drive reads magnetic sectors from a disk. A Gotek or similar USB floppy emulator instead reads a disk-image file from USB storage and exposes that image through the host’s floppy connector. To the host computer, instrument, or CNC controller, the selected image behaves like the inserted floppy media supported by that system.

The emulator does not automatically make every image or every computer compatible. Three independent layers must agree:

  • Disk image: The file must represent a floppy format and access mode that the firmware and target machine can handle.

FlashFloppy’s Initial Setup guide and HxC2001’s Gotek usage-modes manual describe different configuration conventions. Follow the guide for the firmware actually installed; retail units do not all ship with the same firmware.

Check the host before installing anything

Identify the connector and interface family

Read the host machine’s service documentation and inspect the existing drive cable before buying a replacement. Shugart-style systems and IBM PC-compatible systems use related but different signaling conventions. FlashFloppy defaults to Shugart interface emulation. Its documentation describes IBM PC-compatible operation as a modified interface that can be enabled with the JC configuration, with the exact setting also configurable in FF.CFG.

Do not copy a jumper diagram from a different machine. Some Gotek boards do not mark the relevant jumper in the position you may expect, and the same board can require different settings depending on the host.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Confirm drive-select numbering

Determine whether the host expects the emulator as drive 0 or drive 1. FlashFloppy’s setup guidance says Shugart-compatible systems typically use S0. Some IBM PC-compatible or other host arrangements may expect unit 1, in which case S1 can be required. A wrong selection commonly produces a drive that powers up but is invisible to the host or never becomes ready.

Record the original drive’s behavior

Before removing the original mechanism, note which connector orientation, drive-select position, and termination arrangement it used. Photograph the cable and jumper positions. This does not replace the host manual, but it gives you a reversible baseline if the emulator does not respond.

Choose the firmware first

FlashFloppy and HxC are separate firmware options. They have different USB filesystem rules, configuration files, operating modes, and image-format support. A Gotek’s external appearance does not reliably identify which firmware is installed, so check the startup screen, existing documentation, or the seller’s firmware description.

Firmware and mode Selection method Configuration burden Important caveat
FlashFloppy native Screen-equipped units browse valid files and folders; seven-segment units assign valid root-folder images to button-selectable slots. No selector software in native mode; FF.CFG is optional. The host interface, drive select, and image compatibility still must be correct.
FlashFloppy indexed Buttons navigate entries named such as DSKA0000 and DSKA0001. Images must use the indexed naming convention and the mode must be configured when required. The host and emulator still have to agree on interface and drive selection.
HxC normal Direct browsing with an LCD, OLED, or on-screen display. Prepare the USB stick as specified by HxC; a configuration file can be optional when a screen is present. Image support differs by format.
HxC indexed or compatibility Button slots or a selector workflow, depending on the mode. HXCSDFE.CFG may be needed; compatibility mode can also use AUTOBOOT.HFE and selector files. Keep compatibility files in the USB root and avoid changing assigned file locations without refreshing the configuration.

Prepare the USB drive

FlashFloppy filesystem requirement

FlashFloppy documents FAT32 for its USB storage. It does not support exFAT or NTFS according to the official setup documentation. Format the stick as FAT32 before copying images. A stick that mounts normally on a modern computer can still fail in the emulator if it is exFAT or NTFS.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

HxC filesystem requirement

HxC’s Gotek guide lists FAT32, FAT12, and FAT16 as supported filesystems. Use the filesystem specified by the HxC documentation for your firmware version rather than assuming FlashFloppy’s FAT32-only rule applies to HxC.

Use a dedicated working stick

Keep the emulator’s images and configuration files on a dedicated USB stick. This makes it easier to preserve the root-folder naming, restore a known-good configuration, and avoid accidentally moving a file that an indexed or compatibility mode references by location.

Set up a Gotek running FlashFloppy

  1. Verify the firmware. Confirm that the unit runs FlashFloppy and read the current Initial Setup instructions.
  2. Set the interface mode. Leave the default Shugart emulation for a Shugart-compatible host. For an IBM PC-compatible interface, apply the documented PC-interface setting (the guide describes the JC configuration). If your machine needs a different option, place the appropriate setting in FF.CFG.
  3. Set drive select. Use S0 for the typical Shugart arrangement. Test S1 if the host documentation says it expects unit 1. Do not infer the correct position solely from the silkscreen on the Gotek board.
  4. Format the USB stick as FAT32. Do not use exFAT or NTFS with FlashFloppy.
  5. Copy compatible image files. Put the files on the stick in the layout required by the mode you intend to use. Keep a backup of the original files before converting or renaming them.
  6. Choose native or indexed operation. Native mode is simplest when the unit has a screen. A screen-equipped unit can browse valid files and folders. A seven-segment unit in native operation automatically assigns valid images in the root folder to button-selectable slots.
  7. Use indexed names when necessary. In indexed mode, name entries using the documented pattern, such as DSKA0000 and DSKA0001, then select them with the buttons.
  8. Insert the stick and select an image. Allow the emulator to scan the storage, choose the image or slot, and then issue the host’s normal disk access command. If the host reports no disk, recheck interface mode and drive select before changing image files.

Set up a Gotek running HxC firmware

  1. Confirm that HxC firmware is installed. HxC’s setup sequence and file names differ from FlashFloppy’s.
  2. Format the USB stick. HxC documents FAT32, FAT12, and FAT16. Use one of those supported filesystems.
  3. Copy the configuration file when required. The HxC usage guide specifies copying the appropriate HXCSDFE.CFG when needed. Its normal mode can make the configuration file optional when a screen is present.
  4. Copy disk images or prepare partitions. Place the image files on the stick, or follow HxC’s documented partition workflow if your setup uses partitions.
  5. Select an operating mode. Use normal mode for a Gotek with an LCD, OLED, or OSD screen. Use indexed mode for a seven-segment or screenless Gotek. Compatibility or autoboot workflows require the additional files and naming rules described by HxC.
  6. Insert the stick and choose the image or partition. Browse directly in normal mode, or use the indexed slots and buttons in indexed mode.

The complete HxC procedure is documented in HxC firmware for Gotek usage modes. Do not mix HxC configuration files with FlashFloppy instructions unless the firmware documentation explicitly calls for it.

Understand image-selection modes

FlashFloppy native mode

With a screen, native mode lets you browse valid image files and folders. This is the closest experience to choosing a file on a computer: navigate to the desired image and select it.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

On a seven-segment display, native mode automatically assigns valid images in the USB stick’s root folder to numbered slots. The buttons move among those slots. Because the slot list is generated from the valid root-folder files, adding, removing, or renaming files can change which number selects a given image.

FlashFloppy indexed mode

Indexed mode is designed for predictable button selection when there is little or no screen space. The image names identify the slots, using names such as DSKA0000 and DSKA0001. Follow the current FlashFloppy naming and configuration rules for the exact extension and mode settings required by your host.

HxC normal mode

HxC normal mode is intended for Goteks with LCD, OLED, or OSD screens. The user browses images or partitions and selects one directly. The HxC guide’s configuration-file requirement depends on the display and setup.

HxC indexed and compatibility modes

Indexed mode provides button-driven slots for screenless or seven-segment units. HxC compatibility mode can use HXCSDFE.CFG, selector files, and an AUTOBOOT.HFE file. FlashFloppy’s compatibility documentation warns that assignments may depend on a file’s physical USB location. Moving or replacing files can therefore invalidate the assignment; refresh the configuration after reorganizing the stick.

Check image formats before troubleshooting hardware

A filename ending in a familiar extension does not guarantee that the target machine can boot or read it. HxC’s image-format documentation lists the following relevant cases:

Image or workflow Documented behavior What to verify
HFE Universal format for the HxC native emulator. Confirm that the image’s geometry and protections match the target machine.
PC-compatible IMG Directly supported by HxC. Verify that the image is the correct size and layout for the host’s floppy format.
Copy-protected HFE v3 Listed as read-only. Do not assume the emulator can write back to a protected image.
Folder mounting in HxC Creates a duplicate floppy image from a source folder. Requires the documented blank DOS image and firmware version described below.

Read/write behavior varies by format. Consult the full current HxC format table and machine-specific notes before converting an archive or relying on an image for saving data.

Mount an ordinary folder as a floppy image with HxC

HxC firmware includes a folder-emulation feature beginning with firmware v3.2.1.1a or later. It is useful when you have ordinary files and need to present them through a FAT-compatible floppy workflow, but it is not a universal filesystem translator.

  1. Install or verify HxC firmware version 3.2.1.1a or later.
  2. Place a blank DOS IMG file at /mount/emptyfat.img on the USB stick.
  3. Prepare the source folder whose files you want to expose.
  4. Give the source folder the .mnt extension.
  5. Insert the stick and select that .mnt folder using the emulator’s normal HxC selection process.
  6. HxC creates a duplicate floppy image and adds the folder’s files and subfolders to it.

The documented workflow is described in HxC floppy emulation from a USB-stick folder. The host still sees a DOS floppy image; it does not gain the ability to read arbitrary modern filesystems.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Troubleshoot by symptom

The host does not detect the Gotek

  • Recheck whether the host is Shugart-compatible or uses an IBM PC-compatible interface.
  • Verify the interface-mode setting and any required FF.CFG option.
  • Check S0 versus S1 against the host’s documented drive number.
  • Inspect cable orientation and jumper placement, remembering that some Gotek boards have unclear markings.

The emulator powers up but shows no usable images

  • Confirm that the USB stick uses FAT32 for FlashFloppy, or FAT32, FAT12, or FAT16 for HxC.
  • Remove exFAT or NTFS formatting when using FlashFloppy.
  • Check that image files are in the correct folder. FlashFloppy native seven-segment selection uses valid files in the root folder.
  • For indexed operation, verify the required names such as DSKA0000.
  • For HxC compatibility mode, restore HXCSDFE.CFG, selector files, and any required AUTOBOOT.HFE to the USB root.

An image appears but will not boot or read

  • Verify the image format and geometry for the target machine rather than relying on its filename.
  • Check whether the image is copy-protected HFE v3, which HxC documents as read-only.
  • Try a known-compatible image in the same mode to separate image problems from host wiring problems.
  • Do not move files in a compatibility-mode USB layout without rebuilding or refreshing its assignments.

The host reads but cannot save

  • Check the image format’s documented write support.
  • Do not expect copy-protected HFE v3 images to accept writes when HxC lists them as read-only.
  • Test with a writable image made for the host’s exact floppy format.

A practical decision path

  1. Screen-equipped Gotek and FlashFloppy: Start with native mode, FAT32 storage, and direct browsing.
  2. Screenless or seven-segment Gotek and FlashFloppy: Use native root-folder slots for a simple collection, or indexed names when fixed slot numbers matter.
  3. Screen-equipped Gotek and HxC: Use normal mode and direct browsing, adding HXCSDFE.CFG only when the HxC setup requires it.
  4. Screenless HxC unit: Use indexed mode, or the documented compatibility workflow if the host or existing setup depends on selector files.
  5. Folder-based workflow: Use HxC folder emulation only with firmware 3.2.1.1a or later, /mount/emptyfat.img, and a source folder renamed with .mnt.

Final installation checklist

  • Host interface identified from machine-specific documentation.
  • Drive-select requirement confirmed as S0 or S1.
  • Firmware identified as FlashFloppy or HxC.
  • USB filesystem matched to that firmware.
  • Image format checked against the target machine and desired read/write behavior.
  • Selection mode chosen for the available display: browsing, root-folder slots, indexed names, or compatibility files.
  • Original drive wiring and configuration recorded so the installation can be reversed.
