The fastest way to embed Google Reviews on a WordPress website is to install a reputable review plugin, select the correct Google Business Profile, choose a layout, and insert the plugin’s Gutenberg block or shortcode where the reviews should appear. A hosted plugin can do this without putting a Google API key in WordPress. An API-key plugin or a custom integration gives developers more control, but adds credential security, policy, synchronization, and maintenance work.
Choose the right way to display Google Reviews
There are three practical approaches. Your choice depends on how quickly you need the widget running, how much control you need over data and presentation, and whether someone on your team can manage Google credentials and code.

For most small business sites, start with a hosted plugin if its data handling and plan limits meet your needs. Choose an API-key plugin when you need more control and can manage a Google project safely. Build a custom integration only when a developer can support the full lifecycle.
What you need before installing a plugin
- An active Google Business Profile for the business whose reviews you want to show.
- Authorization to manage that listing. Do not connect a profile merely because it has a similar name.
- Administrator access to the WordPress dashboard, or a user role allowed to install and configure plugins.
- The exact business name and address, so you can distinguish the correct listing from similarly named locations.
- A decision about whether a hosted connection or an API-key connection fits your security, design, and maintenance requirements.
Google’s Business Profile API policy says: “You can only use the Business Profile APIs to create, manage, and report on business listings that you either own or are authorized to manage on behalf of the business owner.” That requirement applies whether the integration is supplied by a plugin or written by your team.

Recommended workflow: add reviews with a WordPress plugin
The following sequence works for a typical block-editor site. Plugin names and labels can change, so use the exact controls shown by the plugin you install.
- Confirm the profile. Open the business’s Google Business Profile and note the public name, address, and location. Confirm with the owner that you are authorized to display it.
- Open the plugin directory. In WordPress, go to Plugins → Add New. Search for a review plugin from a trusted source. Review its update history, support information, privacy explanation, and connection method before activating it.
- Install and activate. Select Install Now, then Activate. If the plugin asks for an account or consent, read what data and external requests are involved before continuing.
- Search for the business. GR Widget’s documented WordPress.org flow lets an administrator search for the business from wp-admin and choose the matching listing. Other plugins may use a connection wizard, a place selector, or a profile identifier. Match the exact name and address.
- Choose a presentation. Select the card, list, slider, badge, or other layout offered by the plugin. Set the number of visible reviews, star treatment, spacing, and links only after checking what the plugin’s plan supports.
- Verify the preview. Check the business name, average rating, review count, reviewer text, dates, and any “read more” or “write a review” links. A visually attractive widget is still wrong if it points to another location.
- Copy the placement method. Use the generated Gutenberg block for a page-level section. If the plugin supplies a shortcode, copy it exactly rather than retyping its attributes.
- Insert the widget. Add the block in the editor, or add a Shortcode block and paste the shortcode. Depending on the plugin and theme, a shortcode can also go in a post, widget area, footer, sidebar, page-builder module, or compatible template location.
- Test before publishing. Preview at desktop and narrow mobile widths. Confirm that review text wraps, controls can be reached by keyboard, links open as expected, and the widget does not create horizontal scrolling.
- Publish and check synchronization. After publishing, revisit the page on a normal browser session. Return after the plugin’s documented refresh interval and verify that a newly published review appears when the provider says it should.
Using a hosted, no-API-key plugin
A hosted plugin obtains and synchronizes reviews through the provider’s service. In the GR Widget documentation, business searches and review synchronization are handled by GRWidget.com; the WordPress site does not store or send Google API keys. Its public script loads on pages that contain the widget, block, or shortcode rather than on every page.

GR Widget’s free listing documents one widget per site, five layouts, up to five reviews per business, monthly synchronization, shortcode support, Gutenberg support, and unlimited views. These are vendor plan details, not universal WordPress limits. Confirm the current allowance and refresh interval in the plugin’s listing before you commit a design or promise a client a particular update schedule.
Advantages
- You avoid placing a Google API key in WordPress settings or page code.
- The connection and refresh process are simpler for a non-developer to maintain.
- Block and shortcode output lets you place the same widget in a page section or a reusable theme area.
- A provider can handle changes in its connection layer without requiring you to rewrite site code.
Trade-offs
- The provider determines how often reviews are synchronized and what happens when its service is unavailable.
- Free-plan limits can restrict the number of widgets, layouts, or reviews you can display.
- The widget may make a third-party request when the page loads. Read the provider’s privacy and data-serving explanation and account for it in your site documentation.
- You have less control over the underlying markup and caching than you would with your own integration.
Using a plugin that requires a Google API key
An API-key plugin connects more directly to Google services. The Rich Showcase listing, for example, documents a setup path that uses a free Google API key and a connection wizard. The exact wizard and required services vary by plugin, so follow its current instructions rather than assuming that one plugin’s settings apply to another.

Typical setup sequence
- Open the plugin’s connection or API settings and read its required permissions and services.
- Create or select a Google Cloud project owned by the business or its authorized technical team.
- Enable the APIs identified by the plugin’s documentation. Some integrations also require billing to be configured, even when expected usage is within a free allowance.
- Create an API key, then apply the narrowest restrictions the integration supports. Browser restrictions, server restrictions, API restrictions, and referrer settings should match where requests actually originate.
- Enter the key through the plugin’s secure settings screen or connection wizard. Never paste it into a public post, theme file, screenshot, or client-side script unless the provider explicitly requires a browser key and you have applied suitable restrictions.
- Search for the authorized business listing, select the correct location, and save the widget configuration.
- Test a published page, then inspect the Google Cloud project’s usage and error reports after traffic begins.
Key management checklist
- Give the project and key an owner and a recovery contact.
- Use separate keys or projects for development and production when the plugin supports that arrangement.
- Restrict the key to the APIs and origins or servers that need it.
- Set usage alerts and investigate sudden request increases.
- Rotate a key if it appears in logs, a repository, a support ticket, or a public page.
- Recheck Google’s current Business Profile API terms before changing the integration.
An API key does not grant permission to display any profile you can find. The account and project must still be used only for listings that the owner or your organization is authorized to manage.
Building a custom Google Reviews integration
A custom integration is appropriate when the site needs a bespoke design, a controlled server-side cache, integration with another content system, or behavior that available plugins do not provide. It is not the simplest route for a standard testimonial section.
Components you must plan
- Authentication and authorization: keep credentials on the server where possible, and ensure the connected account is authorized for the listing.
- Data model: decide which fields are needed for the page and how you will handle missing text, deleted reviews, changed ratings, and pagination.
- Refresh jobs: schedule synchronization, record the last successful update, and show a graceful fallback if Google or your worker is temporarily unavailable.
- Rendering: generate accessible HTML with readable text, visible focus states, responsive spacing, and links that remain usable without hover.
- Monitoring: log API errors without writing secrets to logs, and alert someone when refreshes fail repeatedly.
- Policy controls: document authorization, retention, deletion, and any user-facing disclosure required by the services involved.
Storage and indirect-access limits
Google states that API-provided content may be stored only temporarily, securely, and for no more than 30 calendar days under the conditions in its policy. Treat that as a compliance constraint for caching and synchronization, not as a blanket license to copy and permanently archive review text. Build expiration and deletion into the job rather than relying on a manual cleanup.
The same policy prohibits indirect automated access in which clients use a provider’s project instead of their own permitted project. If a service asks you to use credentials that belong to an unrelated provider for automated access, review that arrangement against Google’s current policy before deploying it.

Where to place the widget in WordPress
Page-level trust section
Use a Gutenberg block on a testimonials, home, contact, or service landing page when the reviews support the page’s decision. Place a short heading and enough surrounding space that the section reads as evidence, not as an interruption.
Reusable theme or template area
Use a shortcode when the widget must appear in a sidebar, footer, reusable template, or page-builder module and the plugin supports that context. Confirm that the template actually executes shortcodes; some theme fields display the text literally.

A review section is most useful near the action it supports, such as a contact form or booking button. Keep the call to action visible, and do not let a tall slider push the main content or form below an unnecessarily long first view.
Design, accessibility, speed, and privacy checks
Readable presentation
- Use sufficient contrast for text, stars, links, and controls.
- Allow long review text to wrap instead of forcing a fixed-width card.
- Provide a clear heading and do not rely on star icons alone to communicate the rating.
- Make slider controls keyboard reachable and provide meaningful labels where the plugin permits.
Responsive behavior
Test at the narrowest width used by your audience. Look for clipped reviewer names, overflowing dates, tiny controls, and horizontal scrolling. If the plugin offers columns, reduce the column count at mobile widths rather than shrinking text until it is difficult to read.

Page performance
A widget can load JavaScript, styles, images, and third-party requests. GR Widget says its script loads only on pages containing its shortcode or block, which can avoid loading that script on unrelated pages. That is not a guarantee of a speed improvement in every theme or hosting environment. Test the actual page with the widget enabled and disabled, and check whether the external request delays the first visible content.
Privacy documentation
Identify what third-party requests the widget makes, where scripts and review data are served from, and whether visitor information is sent during page load. Update the site’s privacy documentation when appropriate, and choose a provider that clearly explains its data handling.
Troubleshooting common failures
The wrong business appears
Return to the plugin’s search or place selector. Compare the exact business name, street address, and location with the owner’s profile. Remove the widget and reconnect it if the saved selection cannot be changed safely. Do not “fix” the display by changing only the heading; the underlying listing must be correct.
No reviews load
- Confirm that the Google listing is public and currently contains reviews.
- Check that the plugin connection is active and that the widget is published on the page.
- For an API-key integration, verify the required APIs, key restrictions, project configuration, and any billing requirement shown by the plugin.
- Look for JavaScript errors or blocked third-party requests in the browser’s developer tools.
- Temporarily test with caching or optimization features disabled to identify a script-combination conflict.
The reviews are stale
Find the provider’s documented synchronization interval. A monthly interval in a free plan means a new review may not appear immediately. Use the plugin’s refresh control if the plan provides one, and confirm the last successful synchronization before escalating.

The design conflicts with the theme
Start with the plugin’s layout, color, and spacing controls. Add narrowly scoped CSS only after identifying the widget’s container class, then retest desktop, tablet, and mobile widths. Avoid global rules that change every link, list, or button on the site.
The widget is missing from a template
Check that the shortcode is being executed in that template location and that the plugin’s script loads there. A shortcode pasted into a plain-text field or an unsupported page-builder element will often appear as text or nothing at all. A Gutenberg block may be the safer choice for a normal page.

You are concerned about privacy or security
Review the provider’s explanation of where scripts and review data are served. Remove exposed API keys, rotate compromised credentials, restrict replacement keys, and document relevant third-party requests. For a custom integration, check server logs and caches for accidentally stored review data or secrets.
You are unsure about policy compliance
Confirm that the business owner authorized the connection, then recheck Google’s current Business Profile API policies. Pay particular attention to indirect automated access and the temporary-storage conditions for API-provided content.
Maintenance after publication
- Schedule a periodic visual check of the page on desktop and mobile.
- Review the plugin’s update notes before applying major WordPress or theme updates.
- Confirm that the selected profile, rating, review count, and destination links still match the business.
- Check the provider’s plan page for changed widget, layout, review-count, or synchronization limits before redesigning the section.
- For API-key setups, review usage, restrictions, error logs, and the project’s authorized administrators.
- For custom integrations, verify that expired cached content is removed within the policy window and that failed refreshes produce an understandable fallback.
Which option should you use?
Use a hosted, no-key plugin when your priority is a quick, low-maintenance widget and its layouts, limits, refresh interval, and privacy terms are acceptable. Use an API-key plugin when you need more direct control and have someone responsible for Google project security and policy checks. Use a custom integration only when its additional control justifies development, monitoring, and storage obligations. In every case, select only the authorized business listing, verify the output before publishing, and test the real page rather than assuming the widget will behave like the preview.
