Paper’s configuration is edited on the server, not in the Minecraft client. Use config/paper-global.yml for settings that affect the entire server, config/paper-world-defaults.yml for defaults inherited by worlds, and a specific world’s paper-world.yml for a per-world override. Copy only the setting lines you need, preserve YAML indentation, and test the result on the target server because Paper layouts and the effect of existing world files can vary.
What the Paper configuration files control
Paper is server software, so its YAML files live in the server directory. Editing a client-side file, a launcher setting, or a Minecraft resource pack will not change Paper’s server behavior. The three files below have different scopes; choosing the wrong one is the most common cause of a setting appearing not to work.

Paper stores its world-default values in paper-world-defaults.yml and does not create per-world overrides for those settings out of the box. A world file can therefore exist with only its version marker while still inheriting defaults. An explicit setting in that world’s file is what makes the value a manual override.
Before you edit: identify the server directory and make a recovery copy
The server directory is the folder containing the Paper server files and the config directory. On a self-hosted installation it may be the folder from which you launch the server. On a hosting panel it is normally the server’s main file area; use the panel’s file manager or SFTP view rather than a folder on your personal computer.

A cautious workflow is to stop the server before changing configuration, or otherwise ensure that no process is writing the same file. Make a copy of every YAML file you will touch, retaining the original filename and extension (for example, a copy in a separate backup folder). Community guidance commonly recommends backups, but this is operational advice rather than a Paper behavior documented in the material available for this guide. The important practical result is that you can restore the previous file if the server fails to load the setting.
- Record the server version and the world you intend to change.
- Open the actual server directory, not a similarly named client or mod folder.
- Copy the relevant YAML file before editing it.
- Change one logical setting at a time when troubleshooting; this makes a bad value easier to isolate.
Editing a setting for the entire server
Use paper-global.yml for server-wide behavior
Open config/paper-global.yml in a plain-text editor that does not add rich-text formatting. This file is the correct location for options whose scope is the whole Paper server. Keep the existing section structure and change only the value associated with the option you need.

- Open
config/paper-global.ymlfrom the server’sconfigdirectory. - Find the option in its existing section. Use the comments and names already present in your file; option names can differ between Paper versions.
- Edit the value without changing its indentation or surrounding section names.
- Save as UTF-8 plain text with the exact
.ymlextension. - Start the server using your normal launch command or hosting-panel control, then inspect the console and test the behavior you changed.
Do not move a world-only option into this file simply because it is easier to find. A global value can affect every world and may be much broader than intended.
Changing the default for worlds
Edit paper-world-defaults.yml for inherited values
config/paper-world-defaults.yml supplies the default value for settings that can be overridden per world. Changing a line there changes the value for every world that has not manually overridden that setting. This is the right choice when several worlds should share a new baseline and you do not want to repeat the same line in each world file.

- Open
config/paper-world-defaults.yml. - Locate the option and edit only its value, retaining the file’s indentation.
- Save the file, then start or reload the server according to your normal operating procedure.
- Check each affected world, including a world that has no explicit override, to confirm the result.
Do not assume that changing the defaults file will replace a value explicitly written in a world’s configuration. A manual per-world value has the narrower scope and is intended to take precedence for that world.
Overriding a setting in one world
Find that world’s paper-world.yml
Each world has its own paper-world.yml. By default, the file contains only _version. The exact path depends on the Paper version and the server’s world layout. The overworld is typically at:
world/dimensions/minecraft/overworld/paper-world.yml
The End is shown in the documented layout at:
world/dimensions/minecraft/the_end/paper-world.yml
Some third-party guides show the overworld file as world/paper-world.yml. That is why you should verify the folders on your own server instead of blindly creating a second file at a path copied from a guide. Look for the world directory that contains the world’s data and the existing paper-world.yml; if your layout differs, use the location already used by that installation.

Copy only the lines you want to override
To make a per-world change, copy the relevant option lines from config/paper-world-defaults.yml into the target world’s paper-world.yml, then edit the copied value. The Paper documentation specifically advises against copying the entire defaults file. A world file should contain the version marker and only the settings that differ from the defaults.
- Open
config/paper-world-defaults.ymland identify the complete indented block for the option you need. - Copy only that option and any parent section lines required to preserve its YAML nesting; do not copy unrelated sections.
- Open the target world’s
paper-world.yml. - Paste the option at the same indentation level used in the defaults file.
- Change the value for this world and save the file as plain YAML.
- Start the server and test the target world separately from the others.
For example, if a section in the defaults file is nested two spaces at a time, retain that exact nesting in the world file. YAML uses indentation as syntax; tabs, missing spaces, or a line placed under the wrong parent can make the file invalid or put the option in a different section.

How defaults and world overrides interact
The documented model is inheritance: a world uses the value from paper-world-defaults.yml unless that world has manually overridden the option in its own paper-world.yml. This lets you set a common baseline once and add exceptions only where needed.

There is conflicting third-party guidance about an existing paper-world.yml: one older guide says changing defaults will not affect a world file that already exists, while the official configuration description says defaults apply to worlds without overrides. The distinction is important because a file containing only _version is not the same as a file containing an explicit option. When the outcome matters, test the exact Paper build and world you operate rather than relying on the older blanket claim.

YAML editing rules that prevent avoidable failures
Paper reads these files as YAML, so formatting is part of the configuration. The following habits reduce errors without changing the intended setting:
- Use a plain-text or code editor with visible whitespace; avoid word processors.
- Preserve the indentation already used by the file. Do not replace spaces with tabs.
- Keep section names and option names exactly as generated for your Paper version.
- Change a value, not the spelling or punctuation of an unrelated key.
- Keep comments if they explain the option or its valid values.
- Save with the original filename, including the lowercase
.ymlextension. - Do not paste the entire defaults file into a world file; use the smallest override needed.
If an editor offers automatic formatting, disable it for these files. A formatter that changes indentation or quotes can alter YAML meaning even when the text looks visually similar.
Starting, checking, and testing the change
What is known about reloads and restarts
The available Paper documentation summary does not establish whether a restart is required for every configuration option or exactly when edits are read. Do not promise players that a live edit has taken effect. Use your server’s documented operating procedure, then verify the result in the console and in the affected world. If the setting still behaves as before, perform a full stop and start and test again rather than repeatedly rewriting the file.
A controlled verification sequence
- Keep the backup and note the original value.
- Make one change in the file whose scope matches your goal.
- Start the server or complete the restart procedure you normally use.
- Watch the startup console for YAML parsing errors or configuration warnings.
- Test the behavior in the intended world.
- Test an unaffected world when you changed a default or global file, confirming that the scope is what you expected.
- If the result is wrong, stop the server, restore the backup, and retest before attempting another edit.
Troubleshooting common “Paper config” problems
“I cannot find paper.yml”
Paper’s current configuration is split into files under config; the names to look for are paper-global.yml and paper-world-defaults.yml, plus a paper-world.yml inside each world. A guide written for an older layout may call a file paper.yml or show a different world path. Search the actual server directory and confirm that the server is running Paper, not a different server implementation.

“I edited the defaults, but one world did not change”
Open that world’s paper-world.yml and search for the option. If it is present, the world has an explicit override and will continue using that value until you change or remove the override. If the file contains only _version, the official inheritance description says the world has no manual override; test the exact build after a complete start cycle because third-party instructions disagree about existing world files.
“The server starts, but the option has no effect”
- Confirm that you edited the file belonging to the running server instance.
- Check the scope: global, world default, and per-world files are not interchangeable.
- Verify that the option is nested under the correct section and that indentation matches the defaults file.
- Check for a per-world value that takes precedence over the default.
- Confirm that the change was actually read by restarting and testing again, since universal reload behavior is not established here.
- Make sure the option exists in the Paper version you are running; use the keys generated in that installation rather than copying names from a different version.
“The server reports a configuration or YAML error”
Stop the server and compare the edited file with your backup. Look for tabs, missing spaces, a colon or quote changed accidentally, or a copied block placed under the wrong parent section. Restore the last known-good copy if necessary, start the server, and then reapply one small change while preserving the original structure. Do not paste the whole defaults file into a world file as a workaround.

World names and folder layouts are not always obvious from a control panel. Identify the world directory that contains the target world’s data and its own paper-world.yml. The documented overworld and End examples use nested dimensions/minecraft folders, but your installation may expose a different layout. Verify the path before changing another file.
