To edit spigot.yml, stop the Minecraft server, open the file in the server’s root directory (or in your host’s Spigot configuration page), change only the required values while preserving YAML indentation, save the file, and restart the server. A restart is the supported way to apply these settings.
Spigot and Paper servers use this file for server-wide and per-world behavior. The exact keys, defaults, and accepted values depend on the server software and version, so use documentation that matches your installation before changing an unfamiliar option.

What spigot.yml controls
spigot.yml is a YAML configuration file used by Spigot-based Minecraft servers. Paper is built on Spigot and uses the same file, although Paper versions can add, remove, or alter options. The file is separate from bukkit.yml, server.properties, and plugin-specific files.
It is the right place to inspect or change settings exposed by Spigot’s configuration schema. It is not a universal control panel: a plugin’s behavior normally belongs in that plugin’s own configuration, while basic server properties such as the server port are normally managed elsewhere.

Because the file is read as structured YAML, formatting is part of the configuration. A misplaced space, tab, colon, or value can make a section invalid or prevent the server from loading the file correctly. Treat every edit as a configuration change, not as ordinary free-form text.
Before you edit: a safe checklist
Make these checks before opening the file:
- Confirm whether the server runs Spigot, Paper, or another Spigot-based implementation. Record the exact version so you can use the matching reference.
- Make sure you can stop and start the server, either from its console or from the hosting panel.
- Create a backup copy of
spigot.yml. Give the copy a recognizable name such asspigot.yml.backup-2026-10-14and keep it outside the editor’s undo history. - Note the setting you intend to change, its current value, and the reason for the change. This makes a later rollback or comparison straightforward.
- Plan a maintenance window. The server must be stopped before editing, and it must be restarted afterward for the change to take effect.
Do not edit a live file while the server is writing configuration data. Stop it cleanly first, wait for the process to finish, and then open the file.

Self-managed server
On a self-managed installation, look in the server root directory: the same top-level folder that contains the server JAR and commonly contains bukkit.yml. The root is the supported location described by Spigot and hosting documentation. Do not assume that a file inside plugins is the active server-wide spigot.yml; a file found there may belong to a plugin or may simply be unrelated.
Typical root-level contents might include:
bukkit.yml
commands.yml
eula.txt
server.properties
spigot.yml
world/
world_nether/
world_the_end/Your directory will not necessarily contain every item in this example, and world folder names can differ. The important check is that spigot.yml is alongside the server’s main configuration files, not inside a particular world folder.
Hosted server panel
Hosting panels expose the same file through different interfaces. Look for a file manager, a configuration editor, or a menu labelled Config and Spigot Settings. Some panels present a form instead of raw YAML; others open the actual file. If the panel offers both, edit the managed Spigot configuration entry rather than creating a second file somewhere else.

Panel layouts and labels change, so use the path shown by your provider. If you cannot find the file, search the panel’s file manager for the exact filename spigot.yml while the server is stopped.
How to edit spigot.yml step by step
- Stop the server. Use the console’s stop command or the panel’s stop control. Wait until the process has exited instead of immediately opening the file.
- Open the active file. On a self-managed server, open
spigot.ymlin the root directory. On a hosted server, open the provider’s Spigot configuration editor. - Find the exact key. Use your editor’s search function. Read the surrounding section before changing a value; indentation shows which parent section owns the key.
- Copy the original value. Record it in a note or rely on the backup you made. This is especially important for settings whose units or valid values are not obvious.
- Change only the required value. Keep the key name, colon, indentation, and value type intact. Do not reformat unrelated sections.
- Save the file as plain text. Keep the filename exactly
spigot.yml; do not save a second copy with a.txtextension. - Start or restart the server. Use the console or panel control. A restart, rather than an unverified live-reload command, is the documented way to apply
spigot.ymlchanges. - Check the startup log and behavior. Confirm that the server reaches its normal ready state and that the changed setting behaves as intended. If startup reports a YAML or configuration error, stop the server and restore the backup.
YAML formatting rules that prevent broken configurations
YAML uses indentation to express hierarchy. Keep the indentation style already present in the file; two spaces are common, but consistency with the existing document matters more than replacing every line.
- Use spaces, not tab characters, for indentation.
- Keep a child key farther indented than its parent.
- Keep sibling keys at the same indentation level.
- Put one key and value on each line unless the existing syntax clearly uses a structured value.
- Do not remove a colon after a key or add an extra colon to an unquoted value.
- Preserve value types. A Boolean such as
trueis not the same configuration value as a quoted string such as"true". - Do not change the spelling or capitalization of a key. Configuration names are not interchangeable with similarly named plugin settings.
- Keep comments and blank lines where possible so the file remains understandable, but do not rely on a comment as proof that a key is supported by your installed version.
A simple hierarchy looks like this:
parent-section:
child-setting: value
another-setting: valueIf you move child-setting to the same indentation as parent-section, it is no longer inside that section. That structural change can alter the meaning of the file or make it invalid.
How to identify the right setting and value
Use the reference for the software you actually run. Paper’s configuration reference documents spigot.yml options with explanations and defaults, while the SpigotMC wiki documents each setting’s type and default. Paper’s reference can differ from the Spigot wiki because Paper may support additional options or different behavior.
Check the documentation version against your server version before copying a value. Names and defaults can change between releases, and a key documented for one implementation may be ignored or rejected by another.

The table identifies commonly documented keys; it does not replace the reference for your release. Read the option’s description, default, type, and any notes about restart behavior before editing it.
Editing per-world settings
Many Spigot settings can be overridden for an individual world. The override belongs under world-settings and uses the world folder’s name. A community-maintained SpigotMC forum explanation describes copying the default settings into a world-named section and then changing the values for that world. Because this guidance comes from a community discussion, verify the structure against the documentation for your server version.
The arrangement is conceptually:

# copy the relevant entries from default, then change this world's valuesReplace survival with the exact folder name of the world. The name is case-sensitive in environments where the filesystem is case-sensitive. The override section must be nested under world-settings, and its child keys must be indented consistently with the existing default section.
Choosing the world name
Use the directory name that the server loads, not a display name shown by a map plugin. If the server has separate folders for a main world, Nether, and End, each folder can require its own section when you want different values. If no world-specific section exists, the default world settings apply according to the server’s configuration rules.

Safely creating an override
- Back up
spigot.ymlbefore adding the section. - Find the existing
world-settingsblock and inspect its indentation. - Add the world folder name at the same level as
default. - Copy only the relevant supported entries from the default block.
- Change one value at a time, save, and restart.
- Test in that world and confirm that other worlds retain their expected behavior.
Do not duplicate an entire configuration section without understanding it. A copied key may have a different default in a newer release, and an obsolete key may be ignored or cause a load error.

Applying changes and confirming they worked
Saving the file does not apply the change while the server is running. Restart the server from the console or panel after every edit that you want to test. The restart also ensures that the process reads the file from disk rather than continuing with values loaded earlier.
Use this verification sequence:
- Watch the startup output for YAML parsing errors, unknown-key warnings, or a failure to reach the normal ready state.
- Confirm that the server is reading the expected root directory or panel-managed configuration.
- Test the affected behavior in the intended world, if the change is under
world-settings. - Compare the result with the documented meaning and range of the option, not merely with the value displayed in the editor.
- If the behavior did not change, do not keep stacking edits. Work through the troubleshooting checks below and test one corrected change at a time.
When spigot.yml changes are not applying
The server was not fully restarted
A save followed by a panel refresh is not enough. Stop the process completely and start it again. Do not assume that a generic reload command rereads every spigot.yml option; the supported workflow is a restart.
You edited the wrong file
Check the server root and compare the file’s timestamp with the copy you edited. In a hosted environment, use the provider’s configuration editor or confirm which directory the startup command uses. A second spigot.yml elsewhere will not affect the running instance.
Indentation changed
Compare the edited block with your backup. Look for tabs, a child key aligned with its parent, or a missing colon. Restore the backup if the startup log reports a YAML parsing failure, then reapply only the intended line using spaces.
The key is unsupported or has changed
Check the matching Paper or Spigot reference for your exact version. If the option is absent from that reference, remove the experimental edit and use the setting documented for your implementation. Do not assume that a similarly named option in a plugin or another server version is equivalent.

The world override is in the wrong place
Confirm that the section is under world-settings, that the world name exactly matches the folder, and that the changed key is nested beneath that world name. If the override is not recognized, test the same value in the default section only after restoring a backup and confirming that the setting is supported.
A hosting panel is regenerating the file
Some panels manage configuration through their own form or startup process. If your manual edit disappears, use the panel’s Spigot settings interface, save there, and restart. Keep a local backup so you can compare the generated result with your intended change.

Restore the previous value when the server becomes unstable, performance changes sharply, or the affected behavior is not what you intended. Change one option per restart so you can identify which value caused the result.
Rolling back an edit
- Stop the server.
- Move the current
spigot.ymlto a temporary filename so it is preserved for diagnosis. - Copy your known-good backup back to the exact filename
spigot.yml. - Start the server and check the startup output.
- Once the server is stable, compare the backup and failed file to isolate the problematic key.
Keep dated backups for significant configuration changes. A backup made before each maintenance session is more useful than a single old copy whose relationship to the current server is unclear.
