To edit an Abiotic Factor dedicated server, stop the server, open the save folder for the relevant world, then edit or create SandboxSettings.ini. Its first line must be [SandboxSettings], followed by one key=value entry per line. Save the file, then start the server again. Most community guides use AbioticFactor/Saved/SaveGames/Server/Worlds/<WorldName>/SandboxSettings.ini, but at least one hosting guide uses AbioticFactor/Saved/Config/WindowsServer/SandboxSettings.ini; check which layout your installation uses rather than assuming one path is universal.
What the sandbox file controls
SandboxSettings.ini stores world-level rules for an Abiotic Factor server. Entries in the file can control settings such as whether loot respawns and how quickly enemies appear. The file is separate from account or administrator configuration, so changing an administrator file will not change sandbox rules.
File names, available keys, default values and folder layouts can change with game updates or hosting panels. The instructions below reflect community and hosting guidance available on 14 October 2026, not an official Deep Field Games dedicated-server reference. Treat an unfamiliar key as unverified until the current game build or your host’s documentation confirms it.
Prepare the server before editing
Stop the process completely
Use the host panel’s Stop action or stop the service from the machine that runs the server. Do not edit while players are connected and the process is still running. The server can keep its current settings in memory and write them back when it shuts down, overwriting your change.

Wait until the panel reports that the process has stopped and the server log is no longer advancing. If you use a command-line service manager, stop the service through that manager and verify that no server process remains before opening the file.
Make a recoverable backup
Copy the complete world directory to a separate location before a major change. Also preserve the configuration files commonly used with a dedicated installation:
SandboxSettings.iniGameUserSettings.iniAdmin.ini- The entire world folder, including its subfolders
Give each backup a date and keep it outside the live save path. A backup made after the server has already rewritten the file is not useful for restoring the previous values, so make the copy while the server is stopped.
Identify the world you intend to change
Dedicated servers can contain more than one world save. Record the exact world name shown by the host panel or by the folder names. Editing a valid file in a different world’s directory will appear to do nothing because the running server is loading another save.
Find SandboxSettings.ini
There is no single path that every installation uses. Two locations appear in current community instructions:

Start with the path your host exposes in its file manager. If the world folder contains other save files but no sandbox file, check the server configuration directory as well. Do not create two competing files merely to try both locations; determine which file the installation is actually loading, then keep one authoritative copy.

Guidance conflicts on whether the game automatically creates a sandbox file for every world. Some instructions say it is generated with the world; others report that no file appears until an administrator creates one. The safe procedure is to create a plain-text file named exactly SandboxSettings.ini in the location used by your installation. Do not let a text editor append .txt, and do not use rich-text formatting.
Create a valid file
- Open the chosen folder while the server is stopped.
- Create or open
SandboxSettings.iniin a plain-text editor. - Make the first line exactly
[SandboxSettings]. The square brackets are part of the required section name. - On subsequent lines, enter one setting in the form
key=value. Keep the key spelling and capitalization exactly as documented for your game build. - Save as UTF-8 or ordinary plain text. Avoid word-processor formats, smart quotes and hidden formatting.
- Close the editor and confirm that the file still has the
.iniextension.
A minimal file can look like this:
[SandboxSettings]
LootRespawnEnabled=False
EnemySpawnRate=1.0The example demonstrates syntax only. It does not establish a universal default, and it is not a complete list of supported settings. A hosting guide warns that entries can be ignored when the [SandboxSettings] header is missing, so put the header on line one even when you are changing only one value.
Use one value per line
Do not separate entries with commas or place them on the same line. Keep a copy of the original value before replacing it. If a key is already present, edit that line rather than adding a second copy; duplicate keys make it unclear which value the game will use.
Change a setting without guessing its meaning
Loot respawn
LootRespawnEnabled=False is an example reported by hosting guidance for disabling loot respawn. Change False to True only when the build’s documentation or an in-game test confirms that the key is supported and that the Boolean direction is what you want. A misspelled key can be silently ignored.

Enemy spawn rate
EnemySpawnRate=1.0 is an example of a numeric entry. Do not assume that 1.0 means one enemy, a 100-percent increase or the default on every patch. Treat the value as a multiplier or scale only if the current documentation identifies it that way. Change one variable at a time so you can identify which edit produced an effect.
Difficulty
Community guides disagree about the numeric value used by GameDifficulty. One guide maps Normal to 0 and Hard to 1. Other instructions map Normal to 1, Hard to 2 and Apocalyptic to 3; a fan-wiki example uses GameDifficulty=1 as its default. Because these mappings conflict, do not publish or apply a number-to-label conversion from memory.
Use the in-game difficulty label, the current guide for your server build, or a disposable test world to establish the correct value. Record the existing line before changing it. If the server starts at an unexpected difficulty, stop it, restore the backed-up line and investigate the build-specific mapping instead of trying random numbers on a live world.
Restart and verify the change
- Save the file and close the editor.
- Start the server through the same panel or service manager you normally use.
- Wait for the startup process to finish and for the world to become joinable.
- Connect with an administrator account and test the affected mechanic in a safe area. For a spawn or loot rule, allow enough game time for the rule to have an observable opportunity to act.
- Stop the server again and inspect the file. Confirm that the key and value were not removed or rewritten.
Most server guides say a restart is required. The fan wiki distinguishes local saves, where a reload may be enough, from dedicated servers, where a full restart is expected. For a dedicated server, use the stop-edit-start sequence even if a panel offers a soft reload.
Why a change may appear not to work
The file is ignored
- Check that the first line is exactly
[SandboxSettings]. - Verify that the filename is
SandboxSettings.ini, notSandboxSettings.ini.txt. - Confirm that the file is plain text and contains no rich-text markup.
- Check capitalization, spelling and punctuation in every key.
- Make sure you edited the path used by the running installation, not a template or backup directory.
The edit disappears after shutdown
This usually indicates that the server was still running when you edited the file, or that the host panel restored a managed configuration. Stop the process, restore your backup, make the change again, then start the server. If the host regenerates the file on every boot, ask the host which configuration source is authoritative rather than repeatedly editing the generated copy.

The setting works in one world but not another
When the file is under SaveGames/Server/Worlds, it is tied to the folder named for that world. Check the world identifier in the panel and repeat the edit in the active world’s directory. Keep separate backups so a change for a test world cannot overwrite the production world.
Difficulty does not match the selected label
Restore the previous value, restart and confirm that the server is healthy. Then verify the numeric mapping for the exact game build. The conflicting Normal, Hard and Apocalyptic mappings reported by community sources are enough reason not to infer labels from numbers.

An existing world does not accept the change
A single Steam discussion reports that a setting did not stick on a server-created world and suggests creating the world in the regular game and copying it to the server. That is an anecdote, not a confirmed rule. Before attempting a migration, make a complete world backup, test the setting on a disposable copy and confirm that the save remains loadable. Do not replace a working production save without a rollback plan.
You tried to use the console
The fan wiki states that sandbox settings cannot be changed from the server console. Entering a command will not substitute for editing the file. Use the file procedure and restart the server.

Hosting panels often present a virtual file tree rather than the machine’s full filesystem. Use the panel’s file manager or its documented configuration editor and look for both the world-save path and the Windows-server configuration path listed above. Download a copy before editing, and upload the changed file only after the server has stopped.

If the panel has a separate Save, Apply or Reinstall control, read its warning first. A reinstall or world reset can replace configuration and saves. Never use a reset option as a way to reload an INI file.
Editing a self-hosted installation
On a machine you administer, navigate from the server’s installation directory so that you do not confuse it with a client installation. Look for the relative directories Saved/SaveGames/Server/Worlds and Saved/Config/WindowsServer. If both contain a file with the same name, stop and determine which one the launch configuration reads; editing both can conceal the real source of a value.
Use file permissions that allow the account running the server to read the file. Do not change ownership or permissions more broadly than necessary. After startup, review the server log for load errors if the game exposes them, then perform an in-game test rather than assuming that a successful process start means every key was accepted.
Rollback procedure
- Stop the server and wait for the process to exit.
- Move the current
SandboxSettings.inito a dated troubleshooting copy. - Restore the last known-good file from your backup, or remove only the newly added line if that is the change you are reversing.
- Restore the world folder as well if the setting may have altered world state; do this only from a backup made before the experiment.
- Start the server and verify that players can join and that the original behavior has returned.
Keep the troubleshooting copy until the issue is resolved. It can show whether the host rewrote values, removed unknown keys or changed line endings during startup.
Operational checklist
- Server is fully stopped.
- Correct world name and configuration path are confirmed.
- World folder and
GameUserSettings.ini,Admin.iniandSandboxSettings.iniare backed up. - File is plain text with the exact
.iniextension. - First line is
[SandboxSettings]. - Each entry uses one exact
key=valueline. - Only documented, build-appropriate keys are changed.
- Difficulty numbers are verified against the current in-game labels rather than assumed.
- Server is restarted after saving.
- Setting is tested in game and the file is checked after shutdown.
What is and is not established
The stop-edit-restart workflow, the required section header and the need to create the file when it is missing are the safest common points across the available guidance. The exact path, automatic file generation, supported key list, defaults and difficulty numbering are not consistent across sources. No official Deep Field Games dedicated-server documentation or Steam patch-note reference was available for these file-level details as of 14 October 2026.

For that reason, treat SandboxSettings.ini as a patch-dependent configuration interface: preserve a backup, change one value at a time, verify the active path and test on a copy before making disruptive changes to a populated server.
