Change a 7 Days to Die server’s public name, description, and browser visibility in serverconfig.xml. Stop the server first, edit the file that the server actually loads, save it, and restart. If a hosting panel manages startup settings, make the change in that panel instead of editing the file directly.
Where 7 Days to Die stores public server details
The public-facing details are normally read from serverconfig.xml. The file contains the server name shown in the multiplayer browser, the description displayed beside it, the listing visibility setting, and the join password.
Self-managed server
On a server you run yourself, look in the server’s root installation directory for serverconfig.xml. The root is the directory containing the dedicated-server files and the startup script or executable. Do not assume that a similarly named copy elsewhere is active; the launch command determines which configuration is loaded.
Hosted server
For a rented server, sign in to the provider’s control panel, open the server-management page, choose the Files area, and open serverconfig.xml. Some panels expose the same values under a Startup, Configuration, or General Settings tab rather than presenting the XML directly.

Check which configuration file is loaded
A server can be started with a parameter such as -configfile=custom.xml. When that parameter is present, the server reads custom.xml, not the stock serverconfig.xml. Editing the stock file in that situation has no effect.
- Open the script, shortcut, service definition, or panel startup command used to launch the server.
- Search for
-configfile=. - If a filename follows the parameter, open that exact XML file in the server directory or in the panel’s file manager.
- If no parameter is present, use the server’s normal
serverconfig.xml.
On a hosted service, the startup command may be hidden behind the panel. If you cannot see it, use the panel’s configuration editor or ask the provider which file is active before changing anything.

Stop the server before editing
Make a backup copy of the active XML file, then stop the server cleanly before making manual edits. A running instance can write its current settings back to disk when it shuts down. If you edit while it is live, those changes can be overwritten by the next clean shutdown.
- Tell connected players that maintenance is starting.
- Use the server console or hosting panel’s Stop command and wait until the process is fully stopped.
- Download or duplicate the active configuration file as a rollback copy.
- Edit the original file with a plain-text editor or the panel’s built-in editor.
- Save the file without changing its XML extension or inserting formatting that the server cannot parse.
- Start the server again and wait for it to finish loading before testing the listing.
Edit the name, description, visibility, and password
Find the existing entries rather than adding duplicate entries. Keep the value inside the quotation marks and preserve the surrounding XML syntax.

Change the server name
Replace the value of ServerName with the title you want players to search for. For example, change the value from My Game Host to a distinctive name that identifies your community or play style. Avoid changing the element name, removing quotation marks, or creating a second ServerName entry.
Change the server description
Edit ServerDescription to explain the rules or identity of the world. A short description is easier to read in a browser. State important restrictions, such as whether a password is required, in the description only if that information is accurate; the password requirement itself is controlled by ServerPassword.

Under that interpretation, set ServerVisibility to 2 for a public listing. The meaning of these numbers is not described consistently across every 7 Days to Die guide: one 2026 guide labels 1 as listed and 2 as listed with a password. Before saving, read the comments immediately above the setting in your own serverconfig.xml; those comments document the values expected by that server build. If the hosting panel presents labels instead of numbers, use its Public or equivalent option and do not force a value the panel disallows.

Set or remove a join password
ServerPassword controls whether a player must enter a password. A blank value is open access. To protect the server, enter a password between the existing quotation marks. To return to an open server, remove the password text while leaving the setting itself intact. Tell players about a password change through your normal community channel; a public listing can still be visible even when joining requires authentication.
Save and restart so the browser can update
Save the edited file, close the editor, and start the server again. The name and visibility are not expected to change in the browser while the old process is still running. Allow the startup sequence to complete, then refresh the game’s server-browser results. Browser caches and listing delays can make the old name appear briefly; first verify that the server has restarted with the intended configuration.

Some providers treat the panel as the authoritative configuration. Their Startup or General Settings page may write the server name, password, and player limit into serverconfig.xml every time the server starts. In that arrangement, a direct XML edit can work for one session and then be replaced on the next restart.
- If the panel offers fields for name, description, visibility, or password, change those fields there first.
- If a field is locked or absent, do not repeatedly edit the file without checking the provider’s instructions; the panel may regenerate it.
- After saving a panel change, restart once and inspect the active XML to confirm the generated value.
- Keep a backup of your working configuration in case a panel update resets it.
Panel behavior is provider-specific. A panel may also prevent direct changes to ServerVisibility, so use its own public-listing control when available.

Troubleshooting: the server name or description did not change
You edited the wrong file
Recheck the launch command for -configfile=. If it names another XML file, repeat the edit in that file. On a hosted server, confirm the path shown by the panel rather than relying on a local copy you downloaded earlier.
The server was still running
Stop it completely, make the edit, and restart. A clean shutdown can write the previous values back over your changes if you edit before stopping.

Compare the XML after startup with the values you entered. If they reverted, use the panel’s Startup or Configuration controls, because those controls are likely rewriting the file.
The XML is malformed
Restore the backup if the server fails to start after editing. Then change only the text between the existing quotation marks, preserve every opening and closing XML tag, and save as plain text. Avoid smart quotes copied from a formatted document.

Troubleshooting: “7 Days to Die server not showing in browser”
Confirm the visibility value
Check the comments in the active configuration file and verify that the setting corresponds to a public listing for your build. Under the majority interpretation, 2 is public, while 0 is unlisted and 1 is friends-only. A friends-only server is deliberately absent from the public browser, so players must connect by IP.
Confirm that the new process is running
A name or visibility change does not reach the browser until the server has been restarted. Verify the process status in the console or panel, then refresh the browser after startup has completed.

Check for a panel lock
If the panel does not permit visibility edits, use its listing control. A direct file change may be ignored or replaced when the service starts.
Distinguish listing from joining
A server can be visible yet still require a password. Check ServerPassword separately from ServerVisibility. A blank password allows open joining; a nonblank value requires players to enter it.
Version and configuration-file differences
One host’s documentation notes that, since V3.0, several difficulty, loot, experience, day-length, airdrop, and zombie options are no longer represented as separate lines in serverconfig.xml. That change does not remove the name, description, visibility, or password fields described here. If an older tutorial tells you to edit gameplay lines that are missing from a current file, follow the comments and controls supplied with your server version instead of adding obsolete entries. Do not add duplicate settings simply because an older example contains them.
A safe repeatable workflow
Use this checklist whenever you need to change public details:
