Godlike.Host offers hosted DayZ servers with its own game panel, SFTP access and free DDoS protection, if you would rather not host it yourself.
DayZ player spawn locations are controlled on the server by cfgPlayerSpawnPoints.xml. Stop the server, make a backup, then edit the generator_posbubbles position list—normally in the fresh section—to remove unwanted defaults and add your own coordinates. Restart the server and verify the result with a newly spawned character. The exact behavior of the file has not been independently confirmed for every 2026 game build, so keep the original file and test after each change.
Which DayZ file controls player spawns?
Do not edit the item-loot files when you want to move players. DayZ separates these jobs into different server-side XML files:

The first file is the one to change for a custom player spawn layout. A hosting control panel may place it inside a mission or server configuration directory rather than in the top-level game folder. Use the file browser, FTP/SFTP access or the local server installation to locate the exact copy loaded by your active mission.
Understand the three sections before changing anything
Vanilla-style files use three parallel sections. The Bohemia Interactive Community Wiki and the offline-mode vanilla file maintained by Arkensor show the same broad layout:

Each section contains its own spawn_params, generator_params and generator_posbubbles areas. Editing the fresh position list does not automatically change the hop or travel lists. The wiki description says hop and travel are relevant to official servers; community servers should confirm how their particular mission and server build handle those paths.
Prepare the server and a rollback copy
Changing the file while the server is running is the easiest way to lose edits or have the game overwrite them. Use this order:

- Tell players the server will be offline and stop it from the hosting panel or service manager. Wait until the panel reports that the process has exited.
- Locate the active
cfgPlayerSpawnPoints.xml. If several copies exist, identify the one belonging to the running instance and mission. - Download or copy the file before editing. Give the backup a dated name such as
cfgPlayerSpawnPoints.xml.bak-2026-10-14; do not replace the only original. - Record the current server version, map and mission name. Spawn behavior can differ between maps and game builds.
- Decide whether you are editing manually or using a visual spawn-point editor. Keep a copy of the exported file as well as the original.
Nitrado’s DayZ instructions also tell administrators to stop the server before modifying this file. The same precaution applies to a self-hosted Windows or Linux instance. If a panel offers a “save,” “restart” or “apply” button, use the panel’s normal shutdown and upload workflow instead of editing a live file through a text box.
Collect coordinates that are actually usable
A spawn coordinate is only useful if it is on the map, reachable and suitable for the game’s validity checks. Plan a group of points rather than relying on one exact location.

Read coordinates from the game or server logs
Community administrators commonly obtain positions from in-game or server-log player lines, which may be shown in a format such as pos=<x, y, z>. Treat the order and notation as a value to confirm for your map and build: a coordinate copied into the wrong axis can place every spawn far from the intended area. Capture several known-good locations and note the map they belong to.
Use a map to choose a region
Map tools such as iZurvive can help you identify towns, coastlines, roads and landmarks, but a map pin is not proof that the game will accept the position. Keep points away from cliffs, deep water, dense collision geometry, military interiors and areas where a player could be trapped. After placing a point, verify it in game.

dzpage.com offers a DayZ Spawnpoint Editor with a satellite map for Chernarus, Livonia and Sakhal. It allows you to drag points, import an existing cfgPlayerSpawnPoints.xml and export a new file. This is faster for designing a broad layout, especially when you need many points, but the export remains a configuration file: inspect it, retain your backup and test it on the server before treating the result as final.
Manual method: edit the fresh spawn list
The safest manual method is to preserve the schema already present in your file. Do not invent a new element name from a forum post. Open one existing position entry in the fresh section, duplicate that entry, and change only its coordinate values.

- With the server stopped, open
cfgPlayerSpawnPoints.xmlin an editor that shows line numbers and XML syntax errors. - Find the section named
fresh. Within it, locategenerator_posbubbles, the area containing the default position entries. - Save a second working copy before making changes. This gives you a quick comparison if the server rejects the edited file.
- Remove only the default position entries you do not want. Nitrado’s guide specifically recommends deleting unwanted defaults in
generator_posbubblesbefore adding custom points. - Keep at least one valid entry while editing. A completely empty list is not a useful test and can make it difficult to tell whether the problem is the coordinates or the file structure.
- Duplicate an existing entry using the same element, attributes, capitalization and nesting. Replace its coordinate values with one of your tested locations.
- Repeat for the rest of your locations. Spread points over the intended region instead of stacking every entry on one coordinate.
- Leave unrelated
spawn_paramsandgenerator_paramsvalues unchanged on the first pass. Change one category at a time so a failed test has an identifiable cause. - Check that every opening XML tag has a matching closing tag, that attribute quotes are paired and that the document remains well-formed.
- Save the file in the same text encoding used by the original. Do not let the editor append a second extension such as
.xml.txt. - Upload the file or place it back in the active server directory, then start the server.
The important distinction is between a point’s coordinate and the generator’s rules. A coordinate tells the generator where to look; the surrounding parameters determine whether a nearby position is considered valid. Preserving the existing entry format avoids accidentally changing those rules while you are only trying to move players.
What generator_posbubbles means in practice
The position list is best understood as a set of candidate centers, not necessarily a promise that every player will appear on the exact numerical point. Community documentation describes each point as the center of an area from which the game can sample a valid position. That means a player may appear near a configured coordinate after the game rejects terrain, collisions or other invalid conditions.
The nearby spawn_params values are associated with distance rules for conditions such as infected, other players and static objects in commonly circulated vanilla configurations. The exact effect and accepted ranges should be confirmed against the file shipped with your current server build; do not copy numbers from a different map merely because the XML looks similar.
generator_params commonly contains generation controls such as grid density and steepness limits. These controls influence how the game searches around a position. Leave them at the map’s defaults until your basic coordinate test works, then change one value and retest if you have a specific reason to do so.

How many points should you add?
There is no universal “correct” count in the available documentation. Use a set that covers the region you want players to enter and make the points easy to maintain. A small private server may use a compact group around one coastal area; a larger public server may distribute points across several towns. More entries do not automatically mean better spawns if many are on unsuitable terrain.
- Group points by map and keep a written note of the landmark or town each coordinate represents.
- Avoid placing every point on a road intersection, inside a building or on a narrow ledge.
- Use several nearby candidates so one blocked position does not make the region appear unusable.
- Do not mix coordinates from Chernarus, Livonia and Sakhal in one map’s file.
- After editing, test more than one fresh character so you exercise more than the first entry in the list.
Visual editor versus manual XML

BisectHosting also publishes a guide titled “How to Change the Player Spawn Points on a DayZ Server.” Such provider documentation is useful for locating files in a panel, but the XML principles remain the same: stop, back up, edit the correct section, restart and test.

- Start the server after uploading the edited file and wait for it to finish loading.
- Join with a test account or deliberately create a fresh character. A character that already exists may not demonstrate the fresh-spawn path.
- Record the location, map and approximate time of each test spawn.
- Repeat the test several times. A successful first spawn does not prove that every candidate point is valid.
- Check the server log for XML parsing errors, mission-loading errors or messages that identify the file being read.
- If all tests still use the old locations, stop the server and confirm the path, filename capitalization and upload timestamp. A correctly edited file in an unused directory has no effect.
Verification in the live game is essential. The available references document the file layout, but they do not establish that every detail behaves identically in the current 2026 build. Treat the first restart as a controlled test, not as proof that a configuration is permanently correct.
Troubleshooting common failures

When to edit hop and travel
Most community owners can achieve a custom first-spawn layout by changing fresh alone. The other two sections exist for different player histories:

Same-map server hopping
hop is associated with a player moving between servers on the same map. If you run a cluster and intentionally support that behavior, verify whether the cluster and mission use this section before changing it. A fresh-spawn test will not necessarily exercise the hop list.
Cross-map travel
travel is associated with arriving from another map. It matters only when your server setup implements that transfer path. Do not edit it simply because it appears next to fresh; an unnecessary change creates another variable when you are troubleshooting.
Keeping changes maintainable
- Store the original, each tested revision and a short change note outside the live directory.
- Name revisions with the date, map and purpose, for example
cfgPlayerSpawnPoints-chernarus-coast-test2.xml. - Change one logical thing per restart: positions first, generation parameters later.
- Keep a list of coordinates in a separate note with landmarks and whether each test succeeded.
- When the game or mission updates, compare the new vanilla file with your customized copy instead of blindly overwriting it.
- After an update, recheck section names, nesting and parameter names before importing an older configuration.
Version and map caveat
The strongest structural references available are the Bohemia Interactive Community Wiki and the Arkensor offline-mode vanilla file, while hosting guides from Nitrado and BisectHosting document the operational workflow. The wiki page is old relative to the current date, and no 2026-dated source in the available material confirms that every field behaves unchanged. Use the file shipped with your server as the authority for exact tags and defaults, and use an in-game test to confirm behavior on Chernarus, Livonia or Sakhal.
Safe rollback procedure
- Stop the server completely.
- Move the failing customized file out of the active directory rather than deleting it.
- Restore the dated backup with the exact original filename,
cfgPlayerSpawnPoints.xml. - Start the server and confirm that the previous spawn behavior returns.
- Compare the failed and working files, then reapply only the smallest necessary change.
This process protects the rest of the server configuration and gives you a known-good baseline. Never troubleshoot by repeatedly editing a live file without retaining the last version that successfully loaded.
