To remove an unwanted person or object, open the picture in the Google Photos app, tap Edit, select the distraction by tapping, circling or brushing over it, choose Erase, inspect the result and tap Done. On Android, the tool may be listed as Magic Eraser under Actions or found with the editor’s Search; on iPhone and iPad, it appears among the suggested editing tools. Save the edit or use Save as copy to preserve a separate version.

What Google Photos uses to remove a person or object

Google Photos provides two closely related routes for cleaning up a picture: Magic Eraser, which is the named tool in Google’s Pixel and Android instructions, and the editor’s general unwanted-object selection workflow. Both rely on the same basic action: identify the area you want changed, select it, choose Erase, review what the editor produced and finish with Done.

The controls are not identical on every platform. Android may expose Magic Eraser through Actions or through the editor’s Search field. Pixel phones have a documented path through Edit > Actions > Magic Eraser, although some editor versions place Actions beneath Tools. On iPhone and iPad, Google describes selecting the area first and then choosing Erase from the suggested tools. The browser editor does not necessarily contain the same mobile features.

Google Pixel 11 Pro XL- Unlocked Smartphone, Gemini - 512 GB - Obsidian | Android, Gemini Intelligence, 30+ hour battery, 6.8” Super Actua Display, Pixel HiLight, durable IP68 protection, 120x Zoom
  • Attention-grabbing design meets the latest evolution of the Google Pixel Camera on the new Google Pixel 11 Pro XL; Gemini Intelligence helps manage details so you can live in the moment[1]; and the phone is available in two sizes
  • Unlocked Android phone gives you the flexibility to change carriers and choose your own data plan: Works with Google Fi, Verizon, T-Mobile, AT&T, and other major carriers[2]
  • Stay informed without looking at your screen: When your phone is face down, Pixel HiLight gently alerts you with subtle glowing lights when your favorite contacts are calling or you’re talking with Gemini; exclusive to Google Pixel 11 Pro phones
  • Magic Capture catches the moment as you live it: With just one tap, Pixel 11 Pro captures video and photos, and automatically edits, crops, and unblurs a curated collection, ready to share – and you get the memory of how it felt to be in the moment
  • Two new cameras for more brilliant photos: A larger telephoto sensor captures 30% more light for clear, beautiful photos and videos, even in the dark[3]; Pixel’s longest zoom ever helps you capture details from impressive distances[4]

Before you start

  • Use the Google Photos app on your Android phone, Pixel phone or tablet, iPhone, or iPad. Google notes that some editing features are unavailable on the web.
  • Open the original picture in Google Photos rather than an image preview in another app, so the Google Photos editor and its save controls are available.
  • Decide whether you want to alter the existing photo or create a separate edited file. Save as copy is the safer choice when you want the original preserved beside the edited version.
  • On Android, most editing features require Android 8.0 or later and at least 3 GB of RAM. Google also warns that individual tools can require more memory and that some features are limited to Pixel devices.
  • Make sure you can identify the complete unwanted area. The selection can be made by tapping, drawing a circle or brushing over the person or object, and you can refine it with Add or Subtract.

How to remove a person or object on Android

Open the photo and locate the eraser

  1. Open the Google Photos app and select the photo you want to edit.
  2. Tap Edit.
  3. If the editor shows Search, tap it and type Magic Eraser. Select the matching tool.
  4. If Search is not shown, open Actions and choose Magic Eraser. The exact placement of Actions can vary with the editor version.

Google’s general Android guidance describes the feature as available through the editor’s search or Actions area, so use whichever entry point your current app displays rather than looking for one fixed button position.

Select the distraction

  1. Tap the unwanted person or object if it is clearly separated from the surrounding scene.
  2. If a tap does not cover the full area, draw a circle around it or brush across it. Include the complete figure, object and any part that should disappear.
  3. Use Add to extend the selection when a piece was missed.
  4. Use Subtract to remove nearby background or another person that was selected accidentally.

Selection is the important part of the operation: the area you mark is the area Google Photos will attempt to replace. Zooming the picture before brushing can make the boundary easier to control, but the documented controls remain tap, circle, brush, Add and Subtract.

Erase, inspect and finish

  1. Tap Erase.
  2. Wait for the edited preview to appear, then inspect the entire changed area, including edges where the person or object met the background.
  3. If the selection was incomplete, use the editor’s Add or Subtract controls and run Erase again.
  4. When the result is acceptable, tap Done.
  5. Choose Save to apply the edit in the current editing flow, or choose Save as copy when you want a separate edited image.

When backup is enabled, Google says edits may sync to your account. Allow the save operation to complete before leaving the editor if the picture needs to appear on your other devices.

Pixel phones and tablets: the direct Magic Eraser path

Google’s Pixel instructions give a more specific route than the general Android workflow. The feature is listed for Pixel 4a and later in the cited guidance.

  1. Open the image in Google Photos and tap Edit.
  2. Tap Actions, then choose Magic Eraser. In some versions, Actions appears beneath Tools.
  3. Tap a suggested distraction if Google Photos offers one, or manually circle or brush over the person or object.
  4. Refine the marked area if necessary, then tap Erase.
  5. Review the result, tap Done, and select Save or Save as copy.

If you do not see Actions in the first tool row, check beneath Tools before concluding that Magic Eraser is unavailable. The editor’s layout can change while the underlying feature remains in the app.

How to remove a person or object on iPhone or iPad

  1. Open the Google Photos app and display the photo.
  2. Tap Edit.
  3. Tap, circle or brush over the person or object you want to change.
  4. Choose Erase from the suggested tools. Google notes that the suggested tools can vary by availability.
  5. Inspect the edited image and tap Done.
  6. Use the save option presented by the editor. Where the flow offers Save as copy, choose it to keep a distinct edited file.

The iPhone and iPad instructions do not promise the same menu names as Android. Look for the suggested tool after marking the area rather than expecting an Actions menu.

Save the result without losing the original

Save versus Save as copy

Google Photos can present both Save and Save as copy in editing flows. Saving the edit changes the photo through the normal Google Photos editing workflow. Saving as copy creates a separate edited image, leaving the original available as its own item.

Google warns that you cannot use Revert to undo changes to a photo saved as a copy. Therefore, use Save as copy when comparison or an untouched original matters, and use the ordinary Save route when you intentionally want the existing photo’s edit history to remain available to Google Photos.

Shared albums

Shared albums add another choice. Google distinguishes between saving edits that appear in the shared album and saving a private copy. Check which save command the editor offers before confirming if other people need to see the cleaned-up version. If the edited image should remain private, select the copy option that keeps it separate from the shared item.

Check the original before you finish

Compare the edited result with the original before leaving the editor. Look at the area around the removed person or object, not only the center of the replacement. This check helps you decide whether to refine the selection, keep the original, save the edit or create a copy.

Where is Magic Eraser when it is missing?

You are editing in a browser

Move to the Google Photos app on Android or iOS. Google’s computer help page states that some editing features are unavailable on the web, so a missing eraser control in a browser does not establish that the photo or account is defective. The computer editor is a separate experience from the mobile apps; its available controls can differ.

You are on Android but cannot find the tool

  1. Open the photo, tap Edit and check whether the editor has Search. Search for Magic Eraser.
  2. If Search is absent, inspect Actions. On some versions, Actions is shown beneath Tools.
  3. Check the device conditions Google gives for most Android editing features: Android 8.0 or later and at least 3 GB of RAM. Some individual tools require more memory.
  4. Try the same photo in the app rather than on the web, because feature availability differs between mobile and computer editors.

You are using a Pixel

Use Edit > Actions > Magic Eraser, checking beneath Tools if Actions is not in the first row. Google’s listed eligibility for this feature is Pixel 4a and later. A different Pixel model, an older device or a changed editor layout can explain a missing control.

You are on iPhone or iPad

After tapping Edit, select the area and look among the suggested tools for Erase. Google says suggested tools vary by availability, so the iOS interface may not show the same Magic Eraser label or menu structure used in Android instructions.

The photo itself offers different controls

Google notes that editing controls can vary by photo and device. If one image shows Erase while another does not, use the controls presented for the image you opened and avoid assuming that every picture receives the same tool set.

Improve a removal by refining the selection

When the person or object is only partly removed

Run the selection again and extend it with Add. Brush over small remaining pieces rather than selecting a much larger region that includes important background. Then tap Erase and inspect the new preview.

When the background was selected by mistake

Choose Subtract and remove the unwanted portion of the mask before erasing. This is especially useful when a person stands close to something you want to keep.

When you need a separate version for comparison

Choose Save as copy after reviewing the result. You can then keep the original and edited images as separate items, but remember that Google says a saved copy cannot be restored with Revert.

A practical decision path

  1. Using a phone or tablet? Start in the Google Photos app, not the browser.
  2. Using Android? Open Edit, then find Magic Eraser through Search or Actions.
  3. Using a Pixel 4a or later? Try Edit > Actions > Magic Eraser, checking beneath Tools when necessary.
  4. Using an iPhone or iPad? Mark the area after Edit, then choose Erase from the suggested tools.
  5. Need the original untouched? Select Save as copy where offered.
  6. Need the edited image in a shared album? Review the shared-album save choice rather than automatically creating a private copy.
  7. Still no tool? Check platform, Android memory requirements, device eligibility and photo-specific availability before assuming the feature has failed.

What this workflow can and cannot guarantee

Magic Eraser and the general erase control provide a way to mark distractions and ask Google Photos to remove them; Google’s instructions do not promise identical controls on every device, every image or the web editor. The result should therefore be judged on the actual photo after Erase has run. If the boundary is wrong, refine it with Add or Subtract before saving. If preserving the source matters, create a copy and retain the original rather than relying on a later revert.

Google’s current help pages are the authority for menu names and availability: Android editing, Pixel editing, computer editing and iPhone and iPad editing. The interface can move as Google updates the app, but the selection, Erase, review and Done sequence remains the essential operation.
