To change a keyword on one photo or video, open it in Photos, tap the Info button (or swipe up), and use Add Keywords or Edit. To rename or remove a keyword everywhere it is assigned, use Collections > your profile control > Manage Keywords. Deleting a keyword removes the label from associated items; it does not delete the photos or videos.
What keywords are in Apple Photos
Apple describes keywords as “tags or labels you add to your photos and videos to help you easily find them.” A keyword is metadata attached to an item, not a copy of the image, a folder, or the media file itself. You can use labels such as hiking, receipts, or school concert to make related items easier to locate later.
There are two different jobs that are easy to confuse:

- Item-level editing: changes the keyword field for one selected photo or video.
- Keyword management: renames or deletes a keyword from the items associated with that keyword.
Choose the first route when one item has a typo or should have a different label. Choose Manage Keywords when the label itself is wrong everywhere or you want to remove that label from all of its associated items.

Choose the right method

Edit keywords on one iPhone photo or video
This is the safest route when only one item needs attention. It does not alter the same keyword on other photos or videos.
- Open the Photos app.
- Tap the photo or video you want to change.
- Tap the Info button, or swipe up on the item to open its details.
- If the item has no keywords, tap Add Keywords. Enter one or more custom keywords, then tap Done.
- If keywords are already shown, tap Edit in that keyword field. Correct the spelling, remove an unwanted label, or add another one, then finish the edit.
To remove a single label from this item, use Edit, delete that keyword from the field, and save with Done. This removes the label from the selected item only. It does not remove the underlying photo or video.
When to use item-level editing
- A person’s name is misspelled on one image.
- A receipt was given the wrong project label.
- An item needs an additional keyword without changing older items.
- A keyword should be removed from one image while remaining useful on others.
Rename a keyword across its associated items
Use keyword management when the existing label is generally correct in meaning but needs a new name—for example, changing a broad or outdated term to the spelling you want to use going forward.
- In Photos, tap Collections.
- Tap the profile control in the upper-right corner.
- Tap Manage Keywords.
- Select the keyword you want to change.
- Choose Rename, enter the replacement text, and complete the edit.
Apple’s documented management route applies the rename to photos and videos associated with that keyword. Because this is a keyword-wide action, use it only when every associated item should use the replacement label. If just one item needs a correction, return to that item’s Info view instead.

Delete a keyword without deleting media
Deleting a keyword is a metadata action. It removes that keyword from the photos and videos associated with it; it does not erase those photos or videos from your library.
- Open Photos and tap Collections.
- Tap the profile control in the upper-right corner.
- Tap Manage Keywords, then select the keyword.
- Tap Delete and complete the confirmation or save step shown by Photos.
Use this option for a label you no longer want anywhere. If the problem is limited to one item, edit that item’s keyword field instead; deleting from keyword management has the broader scope.

Searching first can help you check which items carry a label before deciding whether to rename or delete it.

- Enter the keyword.
- When Photos shows keyword suggestions, look for the suggestion marked with the Aa symbol.
- Tap that keyword suggestion to view the associated photos and videos.
The Aa marker identifies a keyword suggestion. Selecting the suggestion is different from simply searching for visible text in a caption or other metadata. If the keyword does not appear, check its spelling and whether the item was actually assigned that label.

Edit keywords on iCloud.com
Photos on iCloud.com provides a web-based alternative for adding or editing keywords on a selected item. It can be useful when you are working from a computer, but Apple’s documented workflow is for the item you open; it is not described as a bulk-edit process.
- Open Photos on iCloud.com and open the photo or video.
- Open Info.
- Choose Add Keywords if the item has none, or choose Edit to change existing keywords.
- Enter, correct, or remove the keyword text, then save the edit.
Keyword searching on iCloud.com requires allowing Data Access and Search. If that permission is not enabled, the web search experience may not return keyword results even though you can still use the item’s Info controls for editing.
Keyword versus caption: use the correct field
Keywords and captions are separate kinds of metadata in Photos. A keyword is a label managed through the keyword controls described above. A caption is descriptive text associated with the item and has its own search behavior. If you are trying to correct a sentence, location note, or other descriptive text, editing keywords will not change the caption. Conversely, changing a caption will not rename or remove a keyword.
Use the Info view to identify which field contains the text you want to change. Keep a consistent convention—for example, short reusable labels as keywords and longer explanations as captions—so future searches produce the result you expect.

Common problems and fixes
The keyword appears on one item but not another
Keyword assignment is item-specific unless you use Manage Keywords to rename or delete an existing keyword. Open the item that is missing the label, use Info, tap Add Keywords, and enter the keyword. Do not assume that a similarly worded caption creates a keyword.
You want to correct only one occurrence, but you see a global option
Leave Manage Keywords and open the individual photo or video. In Info, tap Edit beside the keyword field and change that item. The management screen is intended for keyword-wide rename or deletion.
You deleted a keyword and fear the photo was erased
Deleting from Manage Keywords removes the label from associated photos and videos. It does not delete the underlying media. Check the library or search for the item using other available metadata.

In iPhone Photos, use the keyword suggestion carrying the Aa marker. A plain text match can refer to another field. Confirm the exact keyword spelling in the item’s Info view, then search again.

The menu names do not exactly match these steps
Apple can adjust Photos navigation as iOS changes, and labels can differ in localized versions. Look for the same functions—Info, Add Keywords, Edit, Collections, the profile control, and Manage Keywords—rather than relying on a particular screen appearance. Apple’s guide does not establish a minimum iOS version for these instructions, so do not infer one from the menu names.
iCloud.com does not find a keyword
For web searching, verify that Data Access and Search is allowed. The iCloud.com editing route can still be used for a selected item through Info, but Apple’s documented page does not present it as a bulk keyword editor.
A practical cleanup workflow
For a large or messy label set, work in this order to avoid making a broad change accidentally:
- Search in iPhone Photos for the keyword and use the Aa-marked suggestion to inspect associated items.
- Decide whether the problem affects one item or the label everywhere.
- For one item, edit its Info keyword field.
- For every associated item, use Manage Keywords > Rename or Delete.
- Search again to verify the label now produces the expected result.
- If you are working from a computer, use iCloud.com for selected-item edits and confirm that Data Access and Search is allowed before relying on web keyword search.
This sequence separates inspection from the irreversible-feeling decision to remove a label and keeps item-level corrections from becoming library-wide changes.
What each action changes
- Add Keywords: attaches one or more custom labels to the selected photo or video.
- Edit in an item’s keyword field: changes the labels on that selected item.
- Rename in Manage Keywords: changes the selected keyword as applied to its associated photos and videos.
- Delete in Manage Keywords: removes the selected keyword from its associated photos and videos, while leaving the media intact.
- Search: uses the keyword suggestion marked Aa to show items associated with that label.
Bottom line for choosing a route
Use the selected item’s Info view for a one-off correction, addition, or removal. Use Collections > profile control > Manage Keywords for a rename or deletion that should apply to every photo and video carrying that keyword. Use iCloud.com when you need to edit a selected item from the web, and enable Data Access and Search if you need keyword searching there.
