Android keyboard shortcuts are managed by the keyboard app, not by one universal Android setting. On Samsung Keyboard, go to Settings > General management > Samsung Keyboard settings > Text shortcuts to add or remove a configured phrase shortcut. If you mean an unwanted suggestion rather than a phrase you set up, use the keyboard’s suggestion controls instead. Gboard’s documented steps remove unwanted suggestions and add dictionary words; they do not establish a matching phrase-shortcut editor.
First, identify what you want to change
People use “keyboard shortcut” to mean several different things. A phrase shortcut expands a short entry you configured into longer text. A dictionary word is a spelling the keyboard recognizes. A learned suggestion is a word the keyboard offers based on typing. These are separate controls, so first identify both the keyboard app and the item you want to change.
This distinction matters because the same word can appear in more than one place. You might have deliberately added a text shortcut, or the keyboard might simply have learned to suggest a word while you type. A dictionary entry serves a different purpose again: it helps the keyboard recognize a word. Removing a suggestion does not necessarily remove a configured phrase expansion, and adding a dictionary word does not create one.

- Check the keyboard’s name or distinctive layout. If you are unsure, tap its gear icon to open its settings, or search your device’s Settings for “keyboard.”
- Decide what you are trying to change: a configured phrase shortcut, a word in a dictionary, one unwanted suggestion, or all personalized predictions.
- Follow the instructions for the active keyboard below. Samsung notes that its steps apply to Samsung Keyboard; other keyboard apps can use different menus.
Samsung’s support page also gives older alternate menu paths, and notes that some options may not appear on older devices or operating systems. Google’s Gboard instructions say some steps apply to Android 7.0 and up. Menu labels and availability can therefore vary by device and software version. Samsung Keyboard: add or remove a phrase shortcut
Samsung calls configured phrase expansions Text shortcuts. These are entries you set up so that typing a short phrase can expand into longer text. Samsung’s current US support instructions place them here:
Settings > General management > Samsung Keyboard settings > Text shortcuts
This path is for Samsung Keyboard’s configured phrase shortcuts. If the keyboard showing on your screen is Gboard or another app, do not assume that the same settings page or shortcut list will apply. The keyboard app controls its own shortcuts and suggestions.

Add a shortcut
- Open Text shortcuts using the path above.
- Tap the + icon.
- Enter the short phrase you want to type and the expanded phrase you want inserted.
- Tap Add.
For example, the setup has two parts: the short phrase is what you type, and the expanded phrase is the longer text associated with it. Check that you have entered the intended short and expanded forms before tapping Add. The support instructions describe adding an entry with these fields; they do not specify extra formatting rules or a universal shortcut syntax.
Remove a shortcut
- Open the Text shortcuts list.
- Select the entry you want to remove, if the screen requires a selection.
- Tap the bin icon in the top-right corner and confirm if prompted.
Samsung’s documented deletion control is the bin icon on the shortcut screen. Make sure you are removing the entry from this list if the goal is to delete a configured phrase. Dismissing a word from the predictive toolbar is a different action and does not follow the same path.

Samsung documents adding and deleting entries, but its guidance does not describe an in-place edit control for an existing shortcut. If your screen has no edit option, delete the old entry and create a corrected one with +. This replaces the entry rather than changing it in place. It is the practical workaround supported by the documented add and delete controls; do not rely on an edit button being present on every device.
Samsung Keyboard: remove an unwanted learned word
If the word appears in the predictive toolbar while you type, but is not one of your configured text shortcuts, it may be a learned prediction. To remove one unwanted word, touch and hold its suggestion in the toolbar, then confirm Remove. That action addresses the learned suggestion; it is not the Text shortcuts deletion flow.

The relevant item is the word displayed in the predictive toolbar, and the action is a long press followed by confirmation. You do not need to delete a phrase shortcut unless the unwanted behavior comes from an entry in the Text shortcuts list.
Clear all personalized predictions
If you want to erase Samsung Keyboard’s learned personalized prediction data rather than remove one suggestion, open Samsung Keyboard settings > Reset to default settings > Erase personalized predictions. This is a broader reset: it clears personalized predictions, not just one shortcut or one learned word. Choose it only if you intend to clear that wider set of learned data.
Think of the choice as individual versus broad. Removing one learned word targets that suggestion. Erasing personalized predictions affects the wider set of personalized prediction data. Neither instruction should be confused with deleting one configured phrase from Text shortcuts, which has its own list and bin control.

Gboard: remove a suggestion or add a dictionary word
Gboard’s official help describes controls for suggestions and dictionary words. These are not documented as phrase-expansion shortcut editing controls. If you are looking for a phrase that expands into longer text, the steps below should not be presented as a way to edit that phrase.
Remove an unwanted suggestion
- When the unwanted suggestion appears above the keyboard, touch and hold it.
- Drag it to the Bin.
The gesture applies to an unwanted suggestion in the row above the keyboard. It is distinct from Samsung’s Text shortcuts list and should not be treated as a universal Android shortcut-deletion method. If you are not seeing the word as a suggestion above Gboard, this is not the control described for removing it.
Add a word to the dictionary
- Type the word you want Gboard to recognize.
- Tap the red-underlined word.
- Tap Add to dictionary.
Adding a dictionary word helps Gboard recognize a spelling; it does not create a short phrase that expands into longer text. Likewise, the documented suggestion-removal gesture should not be treated as a general tool for editing phrase shortcuts. These distinctions explain why the right fix depends on what appears on screen and what outcome you want.

The useful comparison is not which keyboard is better; the controls simply differ. Samsung’s documented phrase-shortcut control is a settings list. The Gboard instructions cover a suggestion gesture and a dictionary action. For both keyboards, the first question is what kind of item you mean. The second is whether you want to change one item or clear a broader set of learned data. Finally, the exact menu names and availability may depend on the device and software version.
If the menu or gesture does not match
- You cannot find Text shortcuts: Confirm that Samsung Keyboard is active, then search Settings for “keyboard” or open the active keyboard’s settings. Menu names and paths can vary by device and software version. Samsung lists older alternate paths and warns that some options are not available on older devices or operating systems.
- The shortcut remains after removal: Check that you removed it from the Text shortcuts list, rather than dismissing a suggestion from the toolbar. These actions affect different kinds of entries. If you removed a toolbar suggestion, that is not the same operation as deleting a configured phrase.
- You do not see an edit action: Samsung’s documented workflow supports adding and deleting shortcuts, not a guaranteed in-place edit. Remove the old entry and add the corrected version.
- You want to remove one word, but find a broad reset: On Samsung Keyboard, the personalized-predictions reset clears broader learned data. For one unwanted learned prediction, use the long-press and Remove flow instead. Use the reset only if you intend to erase that wider set of personalized predictions.
- Gboard’s Bin gesture is not working: Make sure you are pressing a suggestion in the row above the keyboard, then hold it and drag it to Bin. The gesture applies to a suggestion, not to a phrase shortcut in a settings list.
- You are trying to add a word, not remove a suggestion: In Gboard, type the word, tap the red-underlined form, and choose Add to dictionary. That recognizes a word; it does not configure phrase expansion.
- Your keyboard is neither Samsung Keyboard nor Gboard: These steps may not apply. Open that keyboard app’s own settings or consult its support instructions rather than assuming Android has a shared shortcut menu.
- The labels differ from the instructions: Software versions and devices can use different paths or may not show every option. Search Settings for “keyboard,” or open the active keyboard’s settings, and compare what you see with the support instructions for that keyboard. Google notes that some Gboard steps apply on Android 7.0 and up.
What to remember
For a phrase you configured on Samsung Keyboard, use Text shortcuts; if there is no edit control, delete and recreate the entry. For an unwanted learned word or suggestion, use the keyboard’s suggestion controls instead. Gboard’s documented steps cover removing a suggestion and adding a dictionary word, not editing phrase expansions.

In short, identify the keyboard, identify the kind of item, and then choose the narrowest matching action. A phrase shortcut belongs in Samsung’s Text shortcuts settings; an individual learned suggestion is removed from the suggestion toolbar; and a dictionary word is managed through Gboard’s dictionary flow. Clearing all personalized predictions is a broader Samsung reset, not a shortcut-specific deletion.

Does adding a word to Gboard’s dictionary make it a keyboard shortcut?
No. Type the word, tap its red-underlined form, and choose Add to dictionary to help Gboard recognize the spelling. That does not make a short phrase expand into longer text.
