To edit a Minecraft world with NBTExplorer, make a complete backup, stop Minecraft or the server, open the world’s level.dat, change the required NBT tag, choose Save All Modified Tags, and put the saved file back in the world folder. Never edit a live world: the game can overwrite your change or keep files locked while it is running.

NBTExplorer is a tree-based editor for Minecraft’s Named Binary Tag (NBT) files. NBT is the structured format used for world metadata, player data, entities, block entities, and other saved information. The file most often used for world-wide settings is level.dat, located in the root of a Java world folder or server world directory.
Inside NBTExplorer, compound tags appear as expandable branches and individual values appear as editable leaves. A value can be a number, string, byte, Boolean-style flag, list, or another compound. Editing is precise: changing one byte or integer can alter a world rule, while changing or deleting an unrelated tag can make a world behave unexpectedly or fail to load.

NBTExplorer is not a normal Minecraft settings screen. It does not validate every value for you, and it does not create a safe rollback automatically. Treat every edit as a file-level change that must be backed up and tested.
Before opening a world
Make a restorable backup
Copy the entire world folder, not only the file you intend to change. Give the copy a clear name such as MyWorld-before-nbt-edit and store it somewhere outside the active saves or server directory. A complete copy preserves region files, player data, advancements, maps, and datapack-related files if the edit needs to be reversed.
If you only have enough storage for a smaller emergency copy, preserve at least the original level.dat and level.dat_old, but a full world copy is safer. Do not overwrite the backup after testing a change; keep the untouched copy until you are satisfied that the world loads and plays normally.

Stop every process using the world
Exit the single-player world to the title screen and close the game before copying or editing files. For a server, stop it cleanly from the hosting control panel or console and wait until the process has finished saving. Editing while the game is running can hide files, produce a stale copy, or cause the server to write its in-memory values over your edit during shutdown.
Confirm which edition and world you have
NBTExplorer guides commonly target Java-style NBT files. The current compatibility of the available NBTExplorer builds with every current Minecraft Java and Bedrock data version has not been established. Do not assume that a file from a newer release or from Bedrock will be safe to edit simply because it has a familiar name. Make a backup, test on a disposable copy, and verify the result in the exact Minecraft version that owns the world.
Obtain NBTExplorer safely
Use the project’s GitHub repository and open its Releases area to choose the latest available asset: https://github.com/redwyre/NBTExplorer. The repository has also been described in search results as a mirror, so check the project identity, release notes, and downloadable file before running anything. A separate download site, nbtexplorer.net, claims that its links are current and clean, but that claim has not been independently verified.

There is no confirmed current release number or release date in the available documentation. Record the version you install so you can reproduce or undo the operation later. Scan downloaded files according to your normal operating-system policy, and avoid repackaged executables from unknown sources.
Windows, macOS, and Linux considerations
NBTExplorer is commonly presented as a Windows-style desktop program. Guides report that macOS or Linux users may need the Mono runtime; one Linux-oriented set of instructions names mono-core and mono-winforms. Those package requirements were not tied to a verified current release, so treat them as compatibility leads rather than guaranteed instructions. One guide also describes a native macOS interface. If the application opens with missing controls, a blank tree, or runtime errors, check the release’s own requirements and test with a copy of the world.
Open and edit a single-player world
- Close Minecraft. Leave the world and exit the game completely.
- Duplicate the world folder. Keep the duplicate untouched and work on the active copy only after confirming the backup exists.
- Locate the world’s
level.dat. Open the folder that contains the world’s region and player directories;level.datshould be at that folder’s top level. If you are unsure which folder is the right one, use the world name and the most recent modification time, then make an additional copy before proceeding. - Start NBTExplorer and open the file. Use the application’s open command, browse to
level.dat, and load it. If the file is not listed, confirm that Minecraft is closed and that you selected the world folder rather than a shortcut or compressed archive. - Expand the root compound. NBTExplorer displays the file as a hierarchy. Expand branches one at a time and read each tag name and type before editing. Do not delete a branch merely because its purpose is not obvious.
- Edit the target value. Double-click the tag’s value, enter the replacement using the same data type, and confirm the edit. A numeric byte, integer, long, float, or double is not interchangeable just because the displayed number looks the same.
- Review the modified marker. NBTExplorer marks changed tags in the tree. Check that only the intended value is marked and that you did not accidentally edit a similarly named tag in another compound.
- Save all changes. Choose Save All Modified Tags. Saving only the tree view or closing the window without this command can leave the original file unchanged.
- Close NBTExplorer and verify the file. Confirm that
level.dathas a new modification time and remains in the original folder. Keep the backup available until the world has loaded successfully. - Launch Minecraft and test. Open the edited world, check the setting you changed, and play long enough to confirm that chunks, players, and expected world behavior are intact. If the world fails to load, close Minecraft and restore the untouched backup rather than repeatedly changing random tags.
Example: enable hardcore in an existing world
A commonly documented example changes the world’s hardcore flag from 0 to 1. The exact branch name can vary with the file’s presentation, so identify the tag labeled for hardcore rather than relying on a screen position.

- Open a backed-up copy of
level.datwith Minecraft stopped. - Expand the world-data compound until you find the hardcore value.
- Double-click the value and change the byte from
0to1. Keep the tag’s type unchanged. - Choose Save All Modified Tags, close the editor, and start the world.
- Confirm that Minecraft now treats the world as hardcore. Test on a disposable copy first if the world is important, because the change affects the world’s rules and death behavior.
Changing a value does not convert unrelated settings, repair corrupted chunks, or make a non-Java world compatible. It changes only the tag you saved.
Editing a Minecraft server world
Download a stopped copy
Stop the server and wait for its console or panel to report that the process has ended. Make a full server backup before downloading anything. Retrieve the complete world directory when possible; at minimum, download the current level.dat and preserve the server’s original copy separately.
Edit locally
Open the downloaded level.dat in NBTExplorer and follow the same expand, double-click, edit, and Save All Modified Tags sequence used for a single-player world. Do not edit a file while an FTP client, synchronization tool, or server panel is still uploading or replacing it.

Replace the server file
After saving, connect to the server’s world directory. One established hosting workflow is to remove or rename the existing file before uploading the edited file with the same name. Renaming is safer than permanent deletion because it leaves a quick rollback copy; for example, use a dated name outside the active path. Upload the edited file as level.dat, confirm that its size and modification time changed, and make sure permissions allow the server process to read it.
Restart and verify
Start the server and watch the console for errors while the world loads. Join with an operator account or test player, check the setting you changed, and inspect a few known areas. If startup fails, stop the server, restore the original file, and restart before investigating further. Never troubleshoot a damaged production world by deleting additional NBT data.
How to choose and change a tag safely
Match the data type
NBT stores both a value and a type. A flag that displays as 0 or 1 is commonly a byte, while a seed or time value may use a larger integer type. Text is stored as a string and collections are stored as lists or compounds. Preserve the existing type unless documentation for the specific tag explicitly requires a conversion.
Change one thing per test
Make one related edit, save, and test. If you change several settings at once and the world behaves incorrectly, you will not know which value caused the problem. Keep a short change log containing the file name, tag path, old value, new value, Minecraft version, and date.
Do not confuse similarly named files
level.dat describes world-level metadata, while player, region, entity, and point-of-interest files hold different data. Editing the wrong file can appear to have no effect or can damage a different part of the world. Open the file you intentionally copied and verify its path before saving.

Limits and cautions
- Version support is uncertain. No current release number or verified compatibility matrix was established for all modern Java and Bedrock data versions.
- Backups are mandatory. NBTExplorer can write changes directly to the file; it is not a sandbox or an undo system.
- Live editing is unsafe. Minecraft can keep data in memory and rewrite the file during shutdown.
- Bedrock support is not established. Do not infer compatibility from a file name alone.
- Server replacement must be exact. The edited file must retain the name
level.datand be uploaded to the active world directory, not to an archive or similarly named backup. - Use the smallest possible change. Editing undocumented tags, deleting compounds, or changing multiple files at once increases recovery difficulty.
A repeatable checklist
- Identify the edition, Minecraft version, and correct world folder.
- Stop Minecraft or the server and wait for it to finish saving.
- Copy the complete world and keep the copy untouched.
- Open the active copy’s
level.datin NBTExplorer. - Locate the intended tag and record its original type and value.
- Change only that value.
- Click Save All Modified Tags.
- Confirm the file timestamp and, for servers, upload to the stopped world directory.
- Start Minecraft or the server and test the result.
- Restore the backup immediately if loading or gameplay is abnormal.
