The dependable way to earn coin in Dressmaker is to deliver commissions that satisfy the customer’s brief. Accepted commissions pay coin and build reputation, which is associated with better future commissions. You can also make money by putting completed, self-designed dresses on sale through the shop window. That second route gives you another source of coin, but the available guides do not establish a universal coins-per-minute winner.
For the best practical progress, treat commissions as your main progression loop and use shop-window sales to turn finished experiments into additional income. Read the request, sketch before buying or cutting, budget the material, and avoid waste. Exact payouts, the best-paying pattern, and a guaranteed “fastest” strategy have not been documented for the current release.

Start every commission with the brief
The most avoidable cost in a commission is spending on a design that was never suitable for the request. The independent money guide recommends planning before buying fabric or cutting. This is not just a stylistic suggestion: a wrong cut can force a recut, consume more cloth, and leave you with an expensive dress that does not satisfy the customer.
Read the occasion and style requirements

- Open and read the request. Note the occasion and the style preferences before selecting a pattern, fabric, or decorative component.
- Draft the design in the sketchbook. Select only the elements that support the brief. If an elaborate material or extra detail does not help answer the request, leave it out until you have a reason to add it.
- Check the material budget. Confirm that the planned dress can be made from the cloth and components you intend to buy. Reserve enough material for a correction rather than treating the first cut as risk-free.
- Lay out the pattern pieces carefully. Arrange pieces to reduce offcuts and avoid a preventable recut. There is no published universal layout or savings figure, so inspect your own arrangement rather than following an invented “best” template.

Use the window when you have a completed dress and no immediate reason to keep it. How reputation affects progress
Reputation is separate from coin. Commission delivery awards reputation along with the documented coin reward, and the available beginner guide associates higher reputation with better future commissions. That makes accepted commissions the clearest route when your goal is progression rather than immediate cash alone.

- Protect your material budget. Plan the pieces and place them carefully before cutting. A saved piece of cloth is money you do not have to replace.
- Deliver only when the result answers the request. Accepted delivery is the supported basis for the coin and reputation reward.
- List finished experiments in the shop window. Convert completed self-designed dresses into a second coin stream instead of leaving them unused.
- Reinvest selectively. Spend commission and window-sale coin on materials appropriate to the next brief, not on an elaborate stockpile whose purpose you cannot explain.

Which fabric should a beginner buy?

Use the brief as your filter. For a formal request, choose a material that supports the requested look; for a less formal request, do not spend on an elaborate option merely because it is available. Compare the material’s cost with the amount of cloth your sketch requires, and leave enough budget for a correction.
