You can earn Mega Energy in Pokémon Go without raids in two documented ways: complete research tasks that award the energy, or walk with a qualifying Buddy Pokémon. The Buddy route has a prerequisite: you must already have Mega Evolved a Pokémon in that Buddy’s evolutionary line. Before either route, check that you are collecting energy for the right species—and the right Mega form, if it has more than one.
The practical difference is straightforward: a research task tells you its reward, while Buddy walking can pay out only occasionally and has no guaranteed distance or amount in Niantic’s general guidance. Neither route makes Mega Energy a universal currency. Match the reward to your target, and remember that each individual Pokémon needs energy for its first Mega Evolution.
Raid-free ways to earn Mega Energy
Niantic’s Pokémon GO Help Center lists specific research tasks and occasional Buddy walking as ways to collect Mega Energy outside Mega Raids. These methods differ in how you qualify and how predictable the reward is.

Niantic describes both routes in its Collecting Mega Energy guidance. The page does not establish which research tasks are active at any particular moment, so avoid relying on old task lists: availability and rewards can change.

For a practical comparison, research depends on what tasks are currently offered and what each task displays as its reward. Once you identify a relevant task, you can see what you are working toward before completing it. Buddy walking is a continuing option after you meet its prerequisite, but the word “occasional” matters: it is not a dependable payout for every walk, and the cited guidance gives no rate to use when estimating how long it will take.
Both routes also require you to target the right energy. A task that grants a different species’ Mega Energy is not a substitute, and a Buddy from an unrelated evolutionary line does not satisfy the walking condition for your intended target. Start with the Pokémon and form you want to Mega Evolve, then choose the route that is actually available for that target.
How to check research for Mega Energy
- Open the Research tab. Review the tasks currently available to you, including any event research.
- Check the reward before doing the task. Look for Mega Energy and verify that it is for the species you are trying to Mega Evolve. A task that rewards another species’ energy will not help with your target.
- Complete the task and claim its reward. Follow the task’s own requirements; Niantic’s general collecting page does not provide a universal task or completion method.
- Recheck the game when you need more. Do not assume a task you completed previously is still available or still gives the same reward.
Research is the more predictable option once you have found a relevant task, because that task displays its reward. The general Niantic guidance confirms research as a route but does not supply a live catalog of tasks, rewards, or their availability.

The general help page confirms that specific research tasks can award Mega Energy, but it is not a current task board. The game’s own task list is the place to check what you can do now. If no task in your current list offers the energy you need, do not assume that an old task name, an old reward amount, or a task from a past event still applies.
Before you invest time in a task, check both parts of its reward: whether it grants Mega Energy at all and which Pokémon it is for. If you are aiming for a particular Mega form, make sure the energy is appropriate for that form as well. Claiming a reward for another species does not move your target closer to its first Mega Evolution because the energy cannot be transferred.
There is no single research task that every player can complete for Mega Energy according to Niantic’s general collecting guidance. The task’s own instructions determine the work required; those could be different from one task to another. Treat the Research tab as a live check rather than following a remembered checklist, and verify the reward again whenever you return to collect more.
How Buddy walking can earn Mega Energy
Buddy walking is conditional, not a universal way to collect energy for any Pokémon. Niantic says the Buddy’s evolutionary line must include a Pokémon you have previously Mega Evolved. The reward is occasional, and the help guidance gives neither a fixed energy amount nor a guaranteed walking distance.

- Check its evolutionary line. Select a Buddy from that line. The prerequisite is prior Mega Evolution of a Pokémon in the line; walking with an unrelated Buddy does not meet it.
- Set that Pokémon as your Buddy and walk. Continue playing with it as your Buddy, but treat Mega Energy as a possible occasional reward rather than a guaranteed payout for a particular distance.
- Check your Mega Energy total. Confirm that the energy gained corresponds to the intended species or form before planning a first Mega Evolution.
If no Mega Energy appears after walking, the cited guidance does not provide a guaranteed distance or troubleshooting threshold to use. First verify the evolutionary-line prerequisite and that you are tracking the correct energy; there is no official fixed yield in this guidance to compare against.

The important prerequisite is a previous Mega Evolution somewhere in the Buddy’s evolutionary line. It does not mean that every Buddy in the line must have Mega Evolved, nor does walking itself unlock the route if no Pokémon in that line has been Mega Evolved before. Make that check before choosing Buddy walking as your plan.
For example, if you want energy for a Pokémon, choose a Buddy that belongs to that Pokémon’s evolutionary line and confirm that you have already Mega Evolved a Pokémon in that line. The route is tied to that relationship; walking with a Buddy that has no such connection will not qualify. The official general guidance does not promise a particular reward after a particular distance, so avoid treating a distance target as a guarantee.
Buddy walking can make sense when you have already met the prerequisite and want to keep using a non-raid route while playing. It is less predictable than a task whose reward is displayed in advance. Do not calculate a number of kilometers or a walking schedule from a fixed Mega Energy rate: Niantic’s guidance describes the reward as occasional and does not give a fixed yield or threshold.

If your total does not change, check the basic conditions first: is the selected Buddy from the relevant evolutionary line, and has a Pokémon in that line previously Mega Evolved? Then make sure you are checking the correct species and form’s energy. If those conditions are met and no energy appears, the general help guidance still offers no official amount or distance that would let you label a particular walk as overdue.
Match the energy to the Pokémon and form
Mega Energy is species-specific, not a shared currency. Energy collected for one species cannot be transferred to another. If a Pokémon has Mega X and Mega Y forms, those forms use separate energy, so collecting or spending energy for one form does not establish progress for the other.
For example, Charizard has Mega X and Mega Y forms. If your goal is to Mega Evolve Charizard into one particular form, make sure the energy you collect is for that form. Niantic’s Mega Evolution guidance explains the form-specific rules.
- Before completing research, inspect the reward to ensure it matches your target.
- For Buddy walking, choose a qualifying Buddy from the target’s evolutionary line and confirm the energy gained is the relevant kind.
- For X/Y Pokémon, treat each form as a separate target when collecting and spending energy.
This is not just a detail to check after collecting. It affects which task is useful, which Buddy you choose, and whether your current balance helps with the form you want. If the reward is for another Pokémon species, it cannot be converted into the energy you need. If the target has two Mega forms, progress with one form does not automatically count for the other.
Charizard is the clearest example of the form distinction. Mega Charizard X and Mega Charizard Y use separate energy. Niantic’s guidance also says that the energy cost reduction for one selected form does not establish progress for the other: you need to Mega Evolve the other form at its full cost before reducing its future cost. If you are collecting toward X, do not assume that energy or cost progress for Y completes the X requirement, or vice versa.

A simple check before you claim a task reward or begin walking is to name the exact target: species first, then form if there is a choice. Keep that target in mind when checking the energy total. This prevents a common planning mistake—having Mega Energy in your inventory but not the kind required for the Mega Evolution you intend to perform.
Why the first Mega Evolution matters
The initial Mega Evolution costs energy for each individual Pokémon. Having Mega Evolved another Pokémon of the same species does not remove the first-use energy requirement for this one. That makes it important to collect enough of the correct energy for the specific Pokémon you intend to evolve.
Niantic says the initial cost is significant and that costs can differ by species. Repeated Mega Evolution reduces the cost over time. For a Pokémon with X and Y forms, the form-specific rule matters too: Mega Evolving one form does not establish the cost reduction for the other form. This is why it is worth deciding which individual Pokémon and which form you are preparing before spending energy.
After an individual Pokémon has Mega Evolved, it can Mega Evolve again without spending Mega Energy once its rest period ends. Niantic says that rest period can last up to several days; it is not a single fixed duration for every case. Repeated Mega Evolutions also reduce the energy cost over time. The Mega form lasts eight hours before the Pokémon returns to normal, according to Niantic’s Mega Evolution help page.
The first-use cost and the later rest period answer two different questions. You need energy to Mega Evolve an individual Pokémon for the first time. After that, waiting for its rest period to end can let you Mega Evolve that same Pokémon again without spending energy. If you are trying to Mega Evolve a different individual—even one of the same species—you still need to meet that new individual’s first-use requirement.
The Mega form is temporary: it lasts eight hours, then the Pokémon returns to normal. That duration does not mean you must pay the first-use cost every eight hours. For an individual that has already Mega Evolved, the rest period determines when it can be Mega Evolved again without energy. The rest period can last up to several days, and the general guidance does not state one universal cooldown for every Pokémon.
Repeated Mega Evolutions also reduce the energy cost over time. This makes an initial energy balance useful beyond one activation, but it does not make all future uses or progression steps automatically free. The initial cost varies by species, and you should check the in-game requirement for the individual and form you plan to use rather than rely on a universal number.

In practical terms, there are two reasons to keep checking your balance. You may still need the relevant energy for a first Mega Evolution on a new individual, and you may need energy for certain progression goals even after a Pokémon has Mega Evolved before. Free re-use after the rest period is valuable, but it is not a rule that erases every Mega Energy cost in the system.
Special case: Rayquaza needs more than energy
Rayquaza requires a Meteorite and the Charged Attack Dragon Ascent to Mega Evolve. Niantic says a Meteorite can be obtained through Special Research. These are additional Mega Evolution requirements, not alternative ways to earn Mega Energy; collecting the energy alone does not satisfy them.
If Rayquaza is your target, keep the requirements separate when planning: Mega Energy is one part, while the Meteorite and Dragon Ascent are additional conditions. A Special Research opportunity to obtain a Meteorite does not turn into a general Mega Energy route, and having the right Mega Energy by itself does not meet Rayquaza’s extra requirements.
This exception is specific to Rayquaza, not a general rule for Mega Evolution. For other targets, use the species’ in-game Mega Evolution requirements and the relevant Niantic guidance. Do not assume that acquiring more energy will resolve an unmet special requirement.

Mega Raids also award Mega Energy, with the amount dependent on how quickly the raid boss is defeated, according to Niantic’s Mega Raid guidance. If you want to avoid raids, the documented options covered here remain research tasks and qualifying Buddy walking.
That is the useful contrast, not a promise that raids are required. The raid reward is tied to defeating the boss and how quickly the group does so; research and qualifying Buddy walking are the two routes to focus on when you want to stay out of Mega Raids. The raid rate does not change the species-specific or form-specific rules for energy.
A quick decision guide
- You found a task with the exact reward you need: complete it and claim the energy.
- No relevant task is available, but you meet the Buddy prerequisite: walk with a Buddy from the target’s evolutionary line; the reward is occasional, not guaranteed at a stated distance.
- You have energy but the Mega Evolution option still requires more: check that the energy is for the right species and form, then account for the first-use cost for that individual Pokémon.
- You are preparing Rayquaza: account for its Meteorite and Dragon Ascent requirements as well as its Mega Energy.
If neither raid-free route is immediately useful, check again later rather than assuming you have missed a permanent opportunity. Research tasks and rewards can change, while Buddy walking is only relevant after the evolutionary-line prerequisite is satisfied. When you do find a route, confirm its reward or eligibility before investing time, and keep the target Pokémon and form in view.

Do you need to Mega Evolve a Pokémon before walking it for Mega Energy?
You must have previously Mega Evolved a Pokémon in the Buddy’s evolutionary line. The Buddy itself need not be the individual you Mega Evolved, but an unrelated Buddy does not meet the prerequisite.
Can I use one Pokémon’s Mega Energy for another Pokémon?
No. Mega Energy is species-specific and cannot be transferred to a different species. For Pokémon with Mega X and Mega Y forms, the forms also use separate energy.
