The fastest official way to earn Buddy Candy in Pokémon GO is to make your Buddy Excited, keep its hunger meter full so it remains on the Map, and then accumulate walking distance. Niantic says the walking distance required for a Candy is reduced while a Buddy is Excited. A Poffin can make the setup more convenient, while Adventure Sync can record eligible distance when Pokémon GO is closed.
There is no official multiplier for the reduction, and the consulted help pages do not state how long a Poffin lasts. Treat Excited mood and Map presence as conditions to maintain, not as a one-time activation.
What actually makes Buddy Candy arrive faster
Buddy Candy is tied to the walking distance associated with the Pokémon currently set as your Buddy. Two Buddy Adventure states matter most:

- Excited mood: Niantic’s Buddy Adventure guidance says, “The walking distance required to collect a Candy will also be reduced while your buddy is Excited.” This is the specific official mechanic that shortens the distance requirement.
- On the Map: Your Buddy must be fed until its hunger meter is full before it appears on the Map. Niantic says a Buddy earns Candy at a reduced walking distance while it is on the Map. The hunger meter decreases over time, so Map presence needs maintenance.
These are separate conditions. Feeding gets the Buddy onto the Map; interactions raise its mood. A Buddy can stop being on the Map when it becomes hungry, and its mood can fall from Excited as time passes. Keep checking both states during a long walk.

What Adventure Sync changes
Adventure Sync is a distance-recording feature, not another Candy discount. When enabled, it can count eligible kilometers while Pokémon GO is closed. That lets distance continue to accumulate without keeping the game open, but it does not create a separate Buddy Candy multiplier.
Step-by-step: the fastest practical setup
- Choose the Pokémon you want Candy for. Set that Pokémon as your Buddy before starting the walk. If a different Pokémon is active, the distance will apply to that Buddy instead.
- Fill the hunger meter. Feed the Buddy until the meter is full and the Buddy appears on the Map. This is the Map condition Niantic associates with a reduced walking distance for Candy.
- Raise the mood to Excited. Use Buddy interactions to increase mood. Continue interacting when the mood decreases; Excited is not a permanent status.
- Decide whether to use a Poffin. A Poffin is optional. It fills the hunger meter and boosts mood to Excited, and Niantic says the Buddy stays full, on the Map, and Excited longer. This is primarily a convenience choice for players who prefer fewer maintenance interactions.
- Start accumulating distance. Walk with the Buddy active and keep an eye on hunger and mood. If either state drops, restore it before expecting the reduced distance condition to continue.
- Enable Adventure Sync if you will close the app. Adventure Sync can record eligible distance in the background, subject to its account, permission, and health-platform requirements.
- Repeat the maintenance cycle. Feed the Buddy again when the hunger meter is no longer full, and interact again when mood falls. Reapply the setup before a planned walk rather than assuming yesterday’s state is still active.
How to keep a Buddy on the Map
Map presence begins with feeding. Open the Buddy interaction screen, feed the Pokémon until its hunger meter is full, and confirm that it appears beside you on the Map. The full meter is temporary: hunger depletes over time. A long session therefore needs occasional checks instead of one feeding at the start of the day.
Keeping the Buddy on the Map is useful even when you are not trying to maximize mood, because Niantic associates Map presence with a reduced walking distance for Candy. If the Buddy disappears from the Map, feed it again before continuing a distance-focused session.

- Before walking: Fill the hunger meter and raise mood toward Excited.
- During a short walk: Continue walking while both conditions remain active.
- During a long walk: Recheck the Map and mood states periodically because hunger and mood decline over time.
- After reopening the game: Confirm the intended Pokémon is still your Buddy and restore any state that has expired.
How to reach and maintain Excited mood
Excited is the mood that reduces the walking distance required for a Candy. Raise it through Buddy interactions, then continue interacting as the mood declines. The official guidance does not provide a fixed number of interactions, a universal timer, or a guaranteed distance figure for the reduction, so do not plan around an unverified multiplier.
The practical implication is that Excited mood is an active optimization layer. If you are willing to interact regularly, you can use the ordinary Buddy system without spending PokéCoins. If you want the game to handle the hunger and mood boost more conveniently, a Poffin combines those effects in one item.

Using a Poffin without false expectations
A Poffin is an in-game Shop item, not a physical accessory. Niantic says it fills the hunger meter and boosts the Buddy’s mood to Excited. It also keeps the Buddy full, on the Map, and Excited longer than the immediate setup would otherwise last.
The official help page consulted for this guide does not give a Poffin price or a duration. Shop availability and item details can change with game updates, so check the current in-game Shop and the latest Pokémon GO Help Center wording before spending PokéCoins. Do not treat a Poffin as mandatory: the same Excited objective can be pursued through ordinary Buddy interactions.
When a Poffin is a sensible choice
- You are starting a long walk and want fewer interruptions to feed or interact.
- You value convenience more than conserving PokéCoins.
- You want the Buddy to begin full, on the Map, and Excited through one item rather than several manual interactions.
Setting up Adventure Sync for distance while the app is closed
Adventure Sync can count eligible distance when Pokémon GO is not open. Niantic lists these requirements:

Complete those requirements in the game and your phone’s health settings, then leave Adventure Sync enabled before closing Pokémon GO. The feature supplies distance tracking; it does not make the Buddy Excited and does not independently shorten the Candy requirement.
If background distance is missing
- Check that the Trainer account is Level 5 or higher.
- Review Pokémon GO’s location permission and make sure the operating system has not revoked it.
- Confirm the correct Apple Health or Google Fit connection is active.
- Reopen Pokémon GO after walking and allow the app to synchronize the recorded distance.
- Verify that the intended Pokémon is still set as the Buddy and restore its hunger or mood state if necessary.
Adventure Sync records only eligible distance under its requirements. A generic wearable, shoe, phone accessory, or other physical product is not established by the official Buddy guidance as an extra Candy accelerator.

A repeatable routine for maximizing Candy on a walk
Before leaving
- Set the target Pokémon as your Buddy.
- Feed it until the hunger meter is full and it appears on the Map.
- Use interactions to reach Excited, or use a Poffin if you prefer the combined hunger and mood boost.
- If you will close the app, confirm Adventure Sync is enabled and its requirements are satisfied.
During the walk
- Keep the Buddy active while distance accumulates.
- Check whether the Buddy remains on the Map; feed it again if hunger has depleted.
- Watch mood and interact again if Excited has ended.
- When the app is closed, rely only on eligible distance recorded through Adventure Sync rather than assuming every movement will count.
After the walk
- Reopen Pokémon GO if you used Adventure Sync so the recorded activity can be processed.
- Confirm that Candy has been credited to the Buddy you intended to walk.
- For another session, repeat the feeding and mood steps instead of assuming the previous state remains active.

You want the least maintenance
Use a Poffin at the start of the session. It combines the full hunger meter and Excited mood boost and keeps those states active longer, according to Niantic. The trade-off is spending PokéCoins and accepting that the current Shop determines availability and price.
You walk while the phone is locked or the game is closed
Set up Adventure Sync first. It can record eligible distance outside the open app, but you still need to select the correct Buddy and maintain the conditions that make the reduced-distance mechanic relevant.
You are planning a long outing
Start with a full hunger meter and Excited mood, decide whether the convenience of a Poffin is worthwhile, and use Adventure Sync if Pokémon GO will be closed. Plan to check the Buddy because both hunger and mood decline over time.
Official limits and details that are not quantified
Niantic’s official Buddy Adventure wording establishes that Excited mood reduces the walking distance required for Candy and that Map presence is associated with a reduced distance when the Buddy is fed. The consulted pages do not provide a numerical reduction, a fixed kilometer target under Excited mood, a Poffin duration, or a Poffin price. Those omissions matter: any guide promising a universal multiplier, guaranteed timer, or fixed Shop cost is adding information not established by these sources.
