To improve your chances of being cited by AI search, first make your pages accessible and eligible to appear in ordinary search, then publish clear, verifiable material and build legitimate authority beyond your own site. Track results separately for each AI search service and query. No documented tactic guarantees a citation.

What does it take to be cited by AI search?

A citation usually depends on whether a system retrieves a page and chooses it as a source for a particular answer. That is different from earning a high traditional search ranking: Google’s guidance matters for its own AI Overviews and AI Mode, but a Google ranking does not establish that ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini, or another service will cite the same page.

There is no universal GEO setting or checklist item that secures placement across platforms. Google says its existing SEO best practices continue to apply to AI Overviews and AI Mode, with no extra technical requirements or special optimizations. It also says a page must be indexed and eligible for a Search snippet to be considered for a supporting link in those features; meeting the requirements still does not guarantee crawling, indexing, or serving.

How to make a page a stronger candidate

  1. Confirm that search systems can access the intended page

Check that the page loads for users, delivers its intended canonical content, is not accidentally blocked, and is indexed where you expect it to be. For a Google AI Overview or AI Mode supporting link, confirm both indexing and Search snippet eligibility. Those conditions establish eligibility, not a promise of inclusion.

  2. Answer the reader’s question plainly

Use a descriptive heading and put the direct answer near the top of the relevant section. Then explain the evidence, conditions, and exceptions. This makes the passage easier for people to understand and verify; it is an editorial clarity practice, not a documented ranking signal or extraction guarantee.

Cover the underlying intent in natural language rather than repeating one exact query. OpenAI says ChatGPT Search may rewrite a question into one or more targeted queries, so a page that addresses the real question and its important distinctions is more useful than one written around a single phrasing.

  3. Make claims specific and verifiable

Name the person, organization, product, place, time period, or audience a claim concerns. Attribute important findings and quotations to their source, preserve dates and context, and link supporting evidence on your own page. Avoid unexplained statistics, unsupported superlatives, and vague wording that becomes unclear when a passage is read on its own.

  4. Build authority through independent evidence

Earn relevant independent coverage, expert references, and attention for original reporting or data. Do not buy or fabricate mentions, reviews, quotations, or citations. Comparative research reports that source mix differs among AI search services, so treat earned-media findings as evidence about the studied systems and sample—not a universal formula.

  5. Maintain ordinary SEO and publishing quality

Keep pages helpful, reliable, accessible to search, and consistent with applicable search policies. Google’s documentation identifies no special AI-feature markup or other optimization requirement. Do not assume that an AI-specific file, schema, keyword repetition, or a particular writing format will create citations across platforms.

  6. Update information when the underlying evidence changes

Refresh dated facts and repair links when their source material changes. If an AI answer cites your page, inspect the cited passage and its publication or update date rather than assuming the system represented it accurately.

Does SEO still matter for AI search?

Yes, as a practical foundation—especially for Google’s AI features. Google’s official guidance says that SEO best practices still apply and that a page needs to be indexed and eligible for a Search snippet to be considered for an AI-feature supporting link. But ordinary search visibility is not proof of citation in another service, and eligibility is not guaranteed inclusion.

The original GEO study by Pranjal Aggarwal and coauthors, accepted to KDD 2024, reported visibility gains of up to 40% in its evaluated benchmark. That is the study’s maximum reported result, not an expected lift for a publisher or a promise that any single tactic will earn a citation; the study reports that effectiveness varied by domain.

How to measure citations without mistaking one result for a trend

Comparative research by Mahe Chen, Xiaoxuan Wang, Kaiwen Chen, and Nick Koudas, published as a September 2025 preprint, reports differences among AI search services in source mix, domain diversity, freshness, language stability, and sensitivity to phrasing. Because the work is a preprint and reports study-specific findings, use it as a reason to test your own audiences and platforms—not as settled product behavior.

  1. Choose representative questions

Build a dated set of reader questions that reflect the topics and intents your pages address. Keep the wording, language, and region recorded so later checks are comparable.

  2. Check each service separately

For every question, record the platform and date, whether your page appeared, whether it was linked or cited, and whether the link opened the intended page.

  3. Verify what the citation supports

Read the answer alongside the cited passage. Record whether the passage actually supports the claim, and note if the citation points to outdated or otherwise unsuitable material.

  4. Repeat with paraphrases

Test a small number of natural rewordings and repeat checks over time. Track whether results change with wording, language, or date, and whether citations reflect material page updates. This is a practical monitoring method, not a standardized industry benchmark.

Can you guarantee a place in an AI Overview or another AI answer?

No. Google explicitly says that meeting its requirements and policies does not mean it will crawl, index, or serve a page. OpenAI likewise cautions that ChatGPT Search results and citations can be incomplete, outdated, or incorrect. Treat a citation as something to verify, not proof that the answer is accurate or that the page will keep appearing.
