To use your own PlayStation 2 software with PCSX2, make two separate dumps: copy each game disc with a computer optical drive, and dump the console BIOS by running a BIOS utility on the PS2 itself. PCSX2 requires a BIOS and says it must come from your own console; there is no open-source replacement. The disc and BIOS jobs use different hardware and different procedures.

The safest workflow is to follow PCSX2’s current BIOS instructions for your exact PS2 model, use a FAT32/MBR USB drive for the normal BIOS transfer, and follow the operating-system-specific steps in its disc-dumping guide. The sections below explain what to prepare, which method fits your computer and media, what files to expect, and how to recover from an unreliable dump.

What you need before starting

Prepare the following items before attempting either dump:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • A working PlayStation 2 console and the games you own.
  • A way to launch homebrew software on that console. PCSX2 documents FreeMcBoot, FreeDVDBoot, Fortuna, swap-based methods and modchips, but compatibility depends on the console model and the method’s risk profile.
  • A USB flash drive for the usual BIOS transfer. PCSX2 recommends an MBR partition table and FAT32 formatting.
  • A computer with a DVD/CD-capable optical drive for disc dumping. An external USB optical drive is suitable when the computer has no internal drive.
  • Enough storage for the resulting image files and a separate backup location for the BIOS files.

Formatting a USB drive erases its contents. Back up anything important first, and check the selected disk carefully before using a partitioning utility. PCSX2 warns that misusing tools such as Rufus can cause permanent data loss.

Why the BIOS and disc dumps are separate

A PS2 disc is read by the computer’s optical drive. The BIOS is firmware stored inside the console, so a computer cannot extract it from the game disc or from an ordinary file download. PCSX2 describes the BIOS files as proprietary software that must be dumped from your own console. Do not use a downloaded BIOS in place of a console dump.

Dumping a disc creates a backup image that PCSX2 can read without repeatedly using the original optical media. Dumping does not harm the disc. A BIOS dump, by contrast, requires launching a dumper on the PS2 and transferring the files to removable storage or over a network.

Dumping the PS2 BIOS

Choose a homebrew launch method for your console

The launcher is the part that varies most between PS2 models. PCSX2’s compatibility table distinguishes the methods rather than presenting one universal solution:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
Method What it provides Compatibility and cautions
FreeMcBoot Homebrew launch from a compatible memory-card setup PCSX2 recommends it for supported consoles, but support is model-dependent.
FreeDVDBoot Homebrew launch using a specially prepared DVD Works only on models and drive revisions covered by the current compatibility information.
Fortuna Another software-based launch route Discussed for some slim models; it is not a blanket solution for every PS2.
Swap-based approaches Launches software by changing media at a defined point Requires appropriate hardware, media and technique; compatibility and risk vary.
Modchip Hardware-assisted homebrew launching An active modchip can produce an incomplete or corrupt BIOS dump. PCSX2 advises disabling it before dumping.

Identify the console model first, then use the matching procedure in the official PCSX2 BIOS guide. If you are unsure which method applies, do not assume that a memory card or boot disc made for one model will work on another.

Prepare the USB drive

  1. Copy any needed files off the flash drive; the next steps can erase it.
  2. Create a single MBR-partitioned volume and format that volume as FAT32. PCSX2 specifically calls out MBR and FAT32 for the normal USB workflow.
  3. Eject the drive cleanly from the computer and connect it to the PS2. USB detection is not universal: some drives are not recognized by the PS2 USB drivers. A different drive, preferably a USB 2.0 model, is the first replacement to try.

USB transfers are slow. A drive that appears idle for a while may still be working, so avoid interrupting the console until the dumper reports completion.

Run biosdrain on the PS2

PCSX2 recommends biosdrain for creating the BIOS files. The utility runs on the console and does not alter the console during the dumping process.

  1. Use the model-appropriate launcher to start homebrew on the PS2.
  2. With any active modchip disabled, start biosdrain from the homebrew environment.
  3. Select the USB destination when the utility presents the available transfer option, or use the network procedure if you have configured a supported network host.
  4. Leave the console powered and the storage connected until biosdrain finishes. Stopping early can leave an incomplete set of files.
  5. Safely stop the homebrew session, remove the USB drive, and inspect its contents on the computer.

The expected output uses a console-model prefix and commonly includes files ending in .rom0, .rom1 and .nvm. Keep every file produced by the run together; do not rename extensions or discard a small-looking file merely because another file appears to contain the main BIOS.

Use network transfer when USB is unsuitable

For a PS2 with network support and the required setup, PCSX2 also documents transferring the dump through ps2link. This avoids relying on a particular flash drive, but it adds network configuration and is not a simpler choice for every reader. Follow the current network steps in PCSX2’s BIOS guide rather than mixing a USB procedure with a ps2link transfer.

Check the BIOS files before adding them to PCSX2

Copy the complete dump to a folder on the computer and retain an untouched backup. In PCSX2, point the BIOS location to the folder used by your installation and select the BIOS entry that matches your console region or model. The exact settings screen can change between PCSX2 versions, so use the labels shown by your build.

An optional integrity check compares a file’s SHA-1 digest with the reference values published in the ReDump project data linked by PCSX2. A match indicates that the bytes agree with the reference; it does not establish legal ownership. Typical commands are:

Dumping PS2 game discs

Confirm the media and drive

PS2 games were released on DVDs and CDs. PCSX2 says a standard optical drive that supports the relevant DVD and CD media can read them; an external USB drive is a practical option for a computer without a built-in drive. Choose the workflow for the actual disc type, not just the computer’s operating system.

Computer DVD approach CD approach Interface
Windows Media Preservation Frontend (MPF) with Redumper or ImgBurn MPF/Redumper or another method that preserves the CD’s track structure Graphical tools
macOS Disk Utility, dd or cdrdao; Disk Utility creates a master image with a .cdr extension dd or cdrdao may be appropriate when track metadata must be retained Graphical or command line
Linux K3b, Brasero, dd or cdrdao Use a track-aware method such as cdrdao when the title has multiple tracks Graphical or command line

The table is a choice of tools, not a guarantee that every program handles every disc layout identically. CD audio tracks and sector sizes make CD dumping more sensitive than a straightforward DVD image.

Windows: use Media Preservation Frontend

MPF provides the clearest graphical path on Windows when used with the supported dumping back end.

  1. Install Media Preservation Frontend and the Redumper component, or select the ImgBurn route documented by PCSX2.
  2. Insert the PS2 disc and open MPF.
  3. Scan for the disc so MPF identifies the optical drive and media.
  4. Choose an output folder with sufficient free space. Keep the default naming and metadata unless you have a reason to organize files differently.
  5. Start the dump and wait for the program to report completion. Do not eject the disc while it is reading.
  6. Open the output folder and confirm that the expected image and any accompanying metadata were created before removing the original disc.

PCSX2 notes that the official ImgBurn installer can contain adware and recommends obtaining ImgBurn through Ninite if you choose that route. Whichever Windows tool you use, download it from the source named in the current PCSX2 instructions and read each installer screen instead of accepting unrelated bundled software.

macOS: create an ISO-compatible image

Disk Utility can create a DVD/CD master image. Select the inserted disc, choose the DVD/CD master-image operation, and save the result. macOS gives this file a .cdr extension. PCSX2 states that the contents are identical to the disc but that PCSX2 does not accept the .cdr extension; rename the completed file from .cdr to .iso after the image has finished.

For command-line workflows, PCSX2 lists dd and cdrdao. These require you to identify the correct optical-device path and destination file, so verify the device name before running a command: selecting the wrong source or destination can overwrite unrelated data. Use a track-aware method for a CD title when a single ISO would flatten audio tracks or use the wrong sector sizing.

Linux: choose a graphical or command-line tool

Linux users can use K3b or Brasero for a graphical workflow, or dd and cdrdao from a terminal. Insert the disc, confirm that the application sees the correct optical drive, select an image output rather than a disc-to-disc copy, and wait for the read to complete. For command-line tools, check the device path and output path separately before starting.

DVD games generally result in an ISO image. CD games may require a binary image plus cue or other track metadata. Preserve every file produced by the dumper in the same folder, because deleting the metadata can make a technically complete-looking image unusable.

DVD images versus CD images

DVD games

A DVD dump is normally represented as one ISO file. The file should be created by reading the entire disc rather than by copying visible files from the disc’s directory. If PCSX2 later freezes or fails to load, treat the image as suspect and create a new dump at a lower drive speed.

CD games and audio tracks

A CD is not always safely represented by one ISO. Games with audio tracks or nonstandard sector layouts can need a .bin file accompanied by cue or related track metadata. PCSX2 warns that its support for reading .cue and .toc files is limited in the context described by its guide, so do not assume that renaming or merging files will solve a CD problem. Keep the original track files, check the current PCSX2 disc instructions for your version, and avoid converting a multi-track dump to a single ISO unless that conversion is explicitly supported for the title.

Validate the dump and place files safely

  • Compare the output size with the capacity of the source medium; a surprisingly small file is a reason to inspect the log and repeat the dump.
  • For a DVD, keep the completed ISO unchanged. For a CD, keep the BIN and its cue or other metadata together.
  • Use clear folders such as PS2/Dumps/Game Title and PS2/BIOS/Console Prefix, but do not alter the extensions generated by the dumper.
  • Keep an untouched backup of the BIOS and a second copy of valuable disc images. A backup is especially useful when you need to redump after discovering read errors.
  • In PCSX2, select the BIOS folder and game-image location through the settings exposed by your installed version. Avoid pointing the emulator at a partially copied file.

Troubleshooting common failures

The PS2 does not see the flash drive

  • Confirm that the drive uses an MBR partition table and a FAT32 volume, not a newer partition or filesystem that the PS2 driver may ignore.
  • Try another flash drive, preferably USB 2.0. PCSX2 explicitly notes that compatibility varies between USB devices.
  • Reconnect the drive directly to the console and rerun biosdrain. Do not assume that a drive recognized by the computer will also be recognized by the PS2.

The BIOS dump is incomplete or fails an SHA-1 check

  • Verify that the launcher matches the console model and that the dumper was allowed to finish.
  • Disable an active modchip before running biosdrain; PCSX2 identifies modchips as a possible cause of incomplete or corrupt dumps.
  • Repeat the dump to a different compatible USB drive or use the documented ps2link network method.
  • Recalculate the SHA-1 digest after the second dump. A mismatch means the file does not match the selected reference value; it is not evidence about ownership.

PCSX2 freezes on a loading screen

A freeze can indicate that the disc image is not an exact read. Dump the disc again and select a lower optical-drive speed when the dumping software offers that option. The slower read takes longer, but PCSX2 recommends it as a troubleshooting measure because it can improve the chance of an accurate image.

A macOS image will not load

Check the extension first. Disk Utility’s DVD/CD master image is saved as .cdr; PCSX2 does not support that extension, so rename the finished file to .iso. Do not rename an unfinished image, and do not apply this conversion to a multi-track CD dump that needs separate track metadata.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A CD image has sound or boot problems

Do not collapse a BIN-plus-metadata dump into one ISO merely to simplify the folder. Recreate the image with a method that preserves track information, retain the cue or related metadata, and consult PCSX2’s current instructions about the version-specific support for those files. If the problem persists, redump at a lower speed.

A practical end-to-end checklist

  1. Identify the PS2 model and choose a compatible homebrew launcher from PCSX2’s BIOS guide.
  2. Back up the USB drive, create an MBR/FAT32 volume, and test a second USB 2.0 drive if the first is not detected.
  3. Disable any active modchip, launch homebrew, run biosdrain, and wait for completion.
  4. Copy every BIOS output file to a protected computer folder and optionally verify its SHA-1 value against ReDump’s reference data.
  5. Check whether each game is a DVD or CD and select a disc-dumping method for the computer’s operating system.
  6. Dump the complete disc, preserving an ISO for a DVD or all track files and metadata for a CD.
  7. If PCSX2 freezes or rejects an image, redump at a lower drive speed rather than modifying the original output.
  8. Configure PCSX2 to use the BIOS folder and game-image folder shown by your installed version, keeping the original dumps as backups.

Following these separate workflows prevents the most common category error: trying to obtain a console BIOS from a computer disc drive, or treating a CD’s track structure like a single-file DVD image. The official PCSX2 documentation remains the authority for model-specific launch compatibility and changes in emulator support.
