You may be able to dual-boot Windows 7 and Windows 11, but it depends on the exact PC. The main obstacle is firmware: Windows 7 may require Compatibility Support Module (CSM), while enabling CSM disables Secure Boot in the configuration Microsoft describes. Before installing anything, check your PC or motherboard model for Windows 7 firmware and driver support. If that combination is unsupported, a separate disk or partition will not make it work.
Can you dual-boot Windows 7 and Windows 11 on the same PC?
Sometimes, but there is no universal setup that works across all PCs. Windows 11’s published minimum requirements include a compatible processor, 4 GB of RAM, 64 GB of storage, UEFI firmware that is Secure Boot capable, and TPM 2.0. Meeting those requirements does not establish that the same PC can run Windows 7: firmware options and Windows 7 drivers for storage, graphics, networking, and peripherals vary by model.
Find the exact PC or motherboard model, then check its manufacturer’s documentation for Windows 7 firmware options and drivers before changing settings or preparing an installation. Microsoft’s Windows 11 System Requirements page lists the Windows 11 requirements; it does not confirm Windows 7 compatibility on a particular machine.
Why can firmware prevent the two systems from working together?
Microsoft’s Windows 7 firmware guidance describes enabling CSM for Windows 7 and says that doing so disables Secure Boot. Its FAQ discusses a particular modern-system configuration that keeps UEFI boot selected while CSM is enabled and Secure Boot is disabled. That scenario-specific guidance is not a guarantee that your PC offers the same settings or will boot both systems.

Check the firmware documentation for your exact PC before changing its boot mode or security settings. A setting that permits Windows 7 to boot can affect Secure Boot, which Windows 11’s minimum requirements say the firmware must be capable of supporting. Do not assume that disabling Secure Boot or enabling CSM is appropriate for every machine.
Should you use a separate drive or a separate partition?
Microsoft’s dual-boot repair guidance describes installing the second Windows system to either a separate hard drive or a prepared separate partition. These are distinct installation targets, but neither option resolves firmware incompatibility or missing Windows 7 drivers.

| Target | What it means | What to check | Does it resolve firmware or driver incompatibility? |
|---|---|---|---|
| Separate hard drive | Install Windows 7 on a different physical drive from Windows 11. | Confirm which drive is the target before installation; this option requires another drive. | No. |
| Separate partition | Install Windows 7 in a distinct partition on a drive. | Prepare and positively identify the intended partition; confirm it has enough available space for the installation. | No. |
The official guidance establishes both targets, not that one is universally safer or has a lower failure rate. Back up important files first, and do not proceed unless you can identify the intended drive or partition with confidence. Keep Windows installation or recovery media available in case you need to reach recovery tools.
How should you approach the installation?
Because firmware controls and Windows 7 driver support differ between PCs, the available official guidance does not establish one safe installer sequence for every configuration. Use this preparation checklist before starting:

How do you fix a missing boot-menu entry?
If the PC starts one Windows installation but the other is absent from the boot menu, Microsoft documents using BCDBoot to add a Windows installation to the menu. From installation or recovery media, open a command line and identify the actual drive letter and Windows directory for the installation you want to add. Drive letters can differ in a recovery environment, so do not assume the example letter is correct.
- Start the PC using Windows installation or recovery media and reach a command line.
- Confirm the drive letter containing the Windows installation you want to add.
- Run BCDBoot with that installation’s actual Windows directory. Microsoft’s example is
bcdboot D:Windows; use a different letter if the installation is not on D:.
Microsoft’s Repair the boot menu on a dual-boot PC guidance documents this command. If you cannot confidently identify the correct Windows directory, stop rather than running it against a guessed drive.

What does Windows 7’s end of support mean for security?
Microsoft lists January 14, 2020 as Windows 7’s end-of-support date. Unsupported Windows versions no longer receive Microsoft security updates or technical support. Treat Windows 7 as a higher-risk environment, not as a suitable everyday connected system; keep Windows 11 as your normal environment and limit Windows 7 exposure according to your security needs.

In guidance published February 10, 2026, Microsoft said the original 2011 Secure Boot certificates begin expiring in June 2026 and described a transition to replacement 2023 certificates. Microsoft also noted that some devices may need firmware updates. Devices without the new certificates can continue to operate, but will no longer receive new protections for the early boot process.
