Dry wet hiking boots at normal room temperature in a low-humidity, ventilated place. Remove the insoles first and dry them separately. A fan or loosely packed newspaper can move moisture out faster, but replace newspaper whenever it becomes damp. Keep boots away from fireplaces, campfires, wood stoves, radiators, heaters and other direct heat: high heat can weaken adhesives and prematurely age leather. These steps limit lingering moisture without risking leather, fabric, adhesives or waterproof membranes. The published care guidance used here does not establish a specific odor-killing treatment, so avoid presenting sprays, disinfectants or household powders as proven remedies.
The safest drying method at a glance
Use this sequence after a wet hike:
- Remove the insoles. Dry them separately so moisture is not trapped against the boot footbed.
- Clean off mud. Use a soft brush and a cleaner compatible with the boot material; rinse only as that cleaner’s directions specify. Do not machine-wash the boots.
- Set up ambient drying. Put the open boots and separate insoles in a low-humidity area at normal room temperature.
- Add room-temperature airflow or absorbent paper if needed. A fan can speed drying. Alternatively, loosely stuff the boots with newspaper and replace it as soon as it becomes damp.
- Keep away from direct heat. Do not put the boots beside a fireplace, campfire, wood stove, radiator or heater.
- Dry completely before storage. Store the boots and insoles in a ventilated place with stable, normal temperatures—not in a damp attic, hot garage or car trunk.
There is no reliable drying-time figure that applies to every boot, climate and degree of saturation. Judge readiness by checking the interior, footbed and insoles rather than by a timer.
Why direct heat is a bad shortcut
Wet footwear creates an understandable temptation to use the hottest available source. Hiking boots, however, combine several materials that do not all tolerate heat equally. Leather can age prematurely, and the adhesives that hold boot components together can weaken. Waterproof or breathable membrane systems also depend on their surrounding construction remaining intact.
Recommended Free Tools
For that reason, drying should be a room-temperature process. “Warm” air from a radiator, wood stove, campfire, fireplace, heated dryer or similar source is not equivalent to gentle ventilation. Moving ordinary room air is the safer way to exchange humid air around the boot without subjecting the materials to a heat spike.

Place the boots far enough from a heat source that they remain at normal room temperature. A fan may provide airflow, but it should be used as an unheated room-air aid, not as a source of hot air. If your only available location is hot, damp or poorly ventilated, move the boots to a more suitable room before beginning.
Step-by-step procedure after a wet hike
1. Remove and separate the insoles
Take both insoles out as soon as practical. The insoles can hold moisture independently of the boot shell, so leaving them inside slows the drying of the interior. Set them beside the boots in the same low-humidity room, with enough exposed surface for air to circulate around them.
Drying the insoles separately also makes the final check more meaningful: a boot can feel dry near its opening while the footbed or insole remains damp. Do not put the insoles back until both the insoles and the interior feel dry.

If the boots are muddy, use a soft brush to remove loose soil. Select a cleaner intended for the boot’s material and follow its directions, including any instructions about rinsing. Check compatibility before applying a product; a cleaner suitable for one type of leather or textile may not be suitable for another construction.
Do not put hiking boots in a washing machine. Machine washing can expose the boot to forces and soaking conditions that the manufacturer may not permit, and it does not replace material-specific cleaning. Cleaning first also prevents a layer of mud from holding additional moisture against the upper while the boot dries.
3. Move the boots to a low-humidity location
Choose a room with ordinary, stable temperature and relatively dry air. Open the boots as far as their construction allows and position them so air can reach the openings. The goal is not to make the boots hot; it is to let humid air leave and drier room air replace it.

Keep the boots away from fireplaces, campfires, wood stoves, radiators and heaters. High heat can weaken adhesives and prematurely age leather, so a place that feels convenient because it is warm is precisely the wrong environment for long-term boot care.

You can simply leave the boots in ambient air, use a fan, or use newspaper as an absorbent insert. The choice depends on what you have available and how much attention you can give the boots.
- Ambient air: Requires no equipment. It is the baseline method when the room is low-humidity and ventilated.
- Fan: A small fan can move room-temperature air around the openings and may shorten the drying process. Keep the airflow unheated.
- Newspaper: Loosely stuff the boots so paper contacts damp interior areas without compressing the boot. Replace the paper whenever it becomes damp.
Do not tightly pack paper into the boot. A loose fill allows air exchange and makes it easier to remove saturated sheets. Newspaper is an optional aid, not a reason to postpone removing the insoles or cleaning mud.
5. Check every moisture-holding part
Before storage, check the inside of each boot, the footbed area and both insoles. If any part is still damp, continue room-temperature drying. When newspaper feels damp, remove it and insert fresh, dry paper. A fan can continue running as a room-air aid while the boots finish drying.
Because drying time varies with the amount of water, boot construction and room humidity, a fixed number of hours would be misleading. Use the condition of the materials as the decision point rather than assuming that a particular overnight period is sufficient.
6. Store only after drying is complete
Put the dry boots and insoles in a ventilated place with stable, normal temperatures. Avoid damp or hot storage locations and avoid unventilated spaces such as attics, garages and car trunks. Storage in those places can expose otherwise dry boots to renewed humidity or heat.

Comparing the three practical drying options
| Method | What you need | How to use it | What is established | Limitation |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Ambient drying | A low-humidity room at normal temperature | Remove insoles, clean as needed, place boots and insoles in ventilated room air | Safest baseline for leather, fabric, adhesives and membranes when direct heat is avoided | No published drying-time estimate |
| Fan-assisted drying | An ordinary fan providing room-temperature airflow | Position airflow around the boot openings; keep the fan away from heated settings | Published care guidance says a fan can speed drying | The relative speed versus other methods has not been quantified |
| Newspaper stuffing | Dry newspaper | Loosely fill the interior and replace paper whenever it becomes damp | Published care guidance recommends it as a way to speed drying | It requires repeated checks and replacement; no controlled speed comparison is available |
These methods can be combined: for example, loosely use newspaper at first and place the boots in ordinary room airflow. The fan and newspaper are optional aids; neither replaces separate insole drying, compatible cleaning or safe storage.
Material-specific precautions
Full-grain leather
Use a cleaner and any later treatment intended for full-grain leather. Leather care products are not interchangeable simply because they are all labeled for boots. Follow the selected product’s directions and keep the drying environment at normal temperature. High heat is particularly undesirable because it can prematurely age leather while also weakening adhesives elsewhere in the boot.
Suede and nubuck
Suede and nubuck require products intended for those specific leather types. Do not assume that a cleaner or conditioner designed for smooth, full-grain leather is suitable. Brush away mud gently, choose a compatible cleaner, and follow the product’s instructions. Let the boot dry at normal room temperature rather than trying to restore its appearance with heat.

Membrane sections should be cleaned rather than treated with a leather conditioner or similar product. Identify which parts of the boot contain the membrane and follow the boot maker’s care directions for those areas. A treatment that is appropriate for an exterior leather panel may be inappropriate for a membrane section.
When in doubt, check the boot’s care label or the manufacturer’s material guidance before applying a cleaner or treatment. The safe default is to use only a product whose instructions explicitly include your boot’s material.
Drying and waterproofing are different maintenance tasks
Drying removes current moisture; it does not automatically renew the boot’s water-repellent finish. New boots generally leave the factory with a durable water-repellent finish, often called DWR. Over time, water may stop beading on the exterior even though the boot is otherwise intact. That change can indicate that the finish needs renewal.

If you decide to renew water repellency, choose a treatment suited to the specific material and follow its directions. Treat full-grain leather, suede, nubuck and membrane-equipped constructions according to their separate requirements. Do not apply a generic product merely because it is marketed for hiking boots.
Perform waterproofing as a separate maintenance decision after the boot has been cleaned and dried. A waterproofing treatment is not a substitute for removing wet insoles, providing room-temperature airflow or storing the boots in a dry, ventilated place.
What you can—and cannot—claim about odor prevention
Keeping the boot interior and insoles from staying damp is the most defensible odor-conscious practice supported by the available care guidance. Promptly removing the insoles, cleaning mud, drying in low-humidity air and storing the finished boots in a ventilated location all reduce the chance that moisture remains trapped between uses.
That guidance does not establish a specific odor-prevention protocol or prove that a particular spray, disinfectant, baking soda treatment or other household remedy eliminates odor. Do not treat those products as guaranteed solutions on the basis of the drying instructions. If an odor persists, return to the supported fundamentals: verify that the insoles and interior are actually dry, clean compatible surfaces according to their material directions, and avoid storing the boots in humid or unventilated places.
A strong smell is not a reason to use direct heat. Heating the boot to chase an odor can damage the same adhesives and leather that the drying procedure is designed to protect. It is safer to improve drying and storage conditions than to escalate temperature.

Troubleshooting common situations
The outside feels dry, but the inside is still damp
Remove the insoles again and continue drying the boots and insoles separately in low-humidity room air. Add a fan or loosely insert dry newspaper. Check the paper frequently and replace it whenever it becomes damp. Do not put the boots away until the interior and footbeds are dry.

The newspaper becomes wet quickly
That is a signal to replace it, not to leave it in place. Remove the damp sheets, insert fresh newspaper loosely and continue ambient drying. Saturated paper cannot absorb additional moisture effectively.
The boots are covered in mud
Brush off loose mud with a soft brush, then use a compatible cleaner and rinse as directed. Check the material before choosing the cleaner. Never use a washing machine as a shortcut.
You have only a fireplace, radiator or heater nearby
Move the boots to a normal-temperature, low-humidity location instead. Direct heat can weaken adhesives and prematurely age leather. If necessary, use a fan that supplies ordinary room-temperature airflow rather than placing the boots beside the heat source.
You are unsure which treatment fits the boot
Read the boot’s material label and the treatment’s compatibility instructions. Full-grain leather, suede, nubuck and waterproof/breathable membrane areas have different care requirements. Use no treatment until the instructions clearly cover the material.
The boots still smell after drying
First confirm that both insoles and the interior are dry and that mud has been cleaned using a compatible product. Review storage: attics, garages and car trunks can be damp, hot or poorly ventilated. The available care guidance does not verify a particular odor spray, disinfectant or powder, so do not assume one is proven. If the smell continues, consult the boot manufacturer for material-specific advice rather than applying an unverified treatment.
A repeatable post-hike checklist
- Insoles removed and placed separately for drying.
- Mud brushed away before cleaning.
- Cleaner checked for compatibility with the boot material.
- Boots and insoles placed in low-humidity, normal-temperature air.
- No fireplace, campfire, wood stove, radiator, heater or other direct heat.
- Fan used only for room-temperature airflow, if available.
- Newspaper inserted loosely, with damp sheets replaced promptly.
- Interior, footbed and insoles checked before storage.
- Dry boots stored in a stable, ventilated place—not an attic, garage or car trunk.
- Waterproofing considered separately and matched to the material.
The practical takeaway
Protect wet hiking boots by slowing down the drying process rather than heating it up. Separate the insoles, clean mud with material-compatible products, use low-humidity room-temperature air, and add a fan or replaceable newspaper only when useful. Keep direct heat away from the boot, and store the completely dry pair in a stable, ventilated location. Those steps address trapped moisture—the part of odor prevention supported by the care guidance—without promising an unverified odor cure.
