Loosen the laces, open the tongue, remove any removable footbeds, and let the boots and footbeds dry in a ventilated place. A boot dryer is another option when its instructions allow use with your boots. Avoid fires, direct sunlight, and other extreme or concentrated heat: drying too quickly can damage leather, rubber, stitching, or adhesives. Wait until the boots are dry before using an odor-control product.

What to do first when boots get wet

Start drying as soon as practical after the inside of a boot gets wet, whether the moisture came from rain, a stream crossing, snow, or perspiration. Danner’s odor-management guidance recommends drying the inside whenever it gets wet. Dampness left inside is also a reason to avoid putting boots away closed up before they have dried.

A useful first check is to distinguish a wet exterior from a wet interior. Boots can get splashed or rained on without the lining becoming damp; they can also feel dry on the outside while sweat has left the footbed or interior humid. If the inside is wet or damp, treat it as a drying job. If only the outside is wet, follow the boot maker’s care instructions for the material and still let the footwear dry in a suitable place rather than assuming the surface tells the whole story.

  1. Loosen the laces. Open the boot as far as its construction allows, and pull the tongue forward. This exposes more of the interior to circulating air. If the boot has a closure or removable gaiter that prevents it from opening fully, undo it only as the maker permits.
  2. Remove removable footbeds. Set them aside to dry separately. Do not force out an insole or footbed that is not designed to be removed. Separating removable parts prevents a damp footbed from staying pressed against the interior while the boot dries.
  3. Choose a ventilated drying spot. Air-dry the boots and footbeds where air can circulate. If using a boot dryer, check both the boot-care instructions and the dryer instructions for compatibility and permitted settings.
  4. Let them dry thoroughly. There is no single reliable drying time for every boot: material, construction, how wet the boot is, and the drying conditions all vary. Check the interior and the footbeds rather than relying on a fixed number of hours.

Danner advises keeping footwear away from extreme heat sources, including fires and cars left in direct sunlight. LOWA’s U.S. care guidance likewise recommends air-drying wet or dirty boots in a ventilated area and avoiding direct heat. These are useful defaults, but the care instructions for the specific boot take priority, particularly for leather and waterproof footwear.

When checking whether the boot is dry, look beyond the opening. Check the lining and the area where a removable footbed normally sits, and check the footbed on both sides. If any part still feels damp, continue drying rather than putting the boot away or applying odor spray. This is a practical check, not a promise that touch alone can measure moisture in every lining or construction.

Choose a drying method that suits the boot

For most wet boots, the decision is between passive air-drying in a ventilated place and using a boot dryer. Neither approach should be treated as automatically suitable for every material or model. Check the maker’s guidance before applying heat or using a device inside the boot.

Method What to consider When it may fit
Ventilated air-drying Requires a place with air circulation and enough time for the boot and footbed to dry. Keep the boots away from direct or extreme heat. A straightforward choice when the manufacturer’s care instructions permit air-drying.
Boot dryer Check the dryer’s instructions as well as the boot maker’s instructions. Use only settings and a device compatible with the boot’s materials and construction; do not assume hotter is better. Danner recommends a boot dryer for wet boot interiors. Its odor guidance also describes boot dryers as useful in odor management.

The available manufacturer guidance supports boot dryers as an option, but it does not establish a universal drying-time advantage or a setting that is safe for every boot. If the boot’s care label or maker’s instructions prohibit a method, follow that restriction. When instructions are unclear, use a ventilated area and avoid direct heat rather than guessing at a high-temperature setting.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Compare methods by asking four practical questions: Does the method rely on direct heat? Do the instructions permit it for this boot’s materials and construction? Does it provide air movement through or around the boot? How much setup does it require? Those questions help you choose without assuming that a particular device is faster or safer in every situation. A dryer may be convenient when the boot maker permits it; air-drying is a simple alternative when there is a ventilated place and time. Neither removes the need to open the boot and separate removable footbeds.

Do not infer a temperature, a number of hours, or an ideal placement from general advice. The cited manufacturers do not provide one time that applies across all boots and degrees of wetness. A lightly damp boot and one soaked through may not dry at the same rate, and different materials and constructions have different care needs. Follow the particular boot and dryer directions; if those directions do not allow a dryer or are unclear, choose ventilated air-drying and avoid direct heat.

Why direct and extreme heat can damage boots

Heat can make a boot seem dry sooner while stressing the materials that hold it together. Danner warns that rapid drying can damage leather and rubber; its footwear-care guidance also notes that direct sunlight and open flame can damage footwear, including by cracking leather or delaminating an outsole. LOWA warns that direct heat can cause leather to shrink or crack. High heat can also age stitching and adhesives.

Keep wet boots away from:

  • Open fires, stoves, radiators, and other intense heat sources.
  • Direct sunlight used as a concentrated drying method, including leaving boots in a car that is parked in the sun.
  • Any boot-dryer setting the dryer maker or boot maker does not permit.

Danner’s U.S. footwear-care guidance specifically cautions: “It’s important to keep footwear away from extreme heat sources, such as fires and cars left in direct sunlight.” The point is not simply to avoid scorching a boot. Rapid or concentrated heat can affect the leather and rubber, and may contribute to outsole separation or damage to stitching and adhesives. A boot that looks dry on the outside is not worth risking damage to its construction by placing it next to a flame or in a hot, sunny car.

GORE-TEX footwear-care guidance also advises against direct heat and against leaving footwear wet for too long. For leather footwear with a waterproof construction, GORE-TEX directs owners to check the footwear manufacturer’s instructions. General membrane guidance does not replace the boot maker’s material-specific care directions.

Drying leather and waterproof boots

Leather boots

Leather is especially vulnerable to damage from aggressive drying. LOWA cautions that direct heat can shrink or crack leather, and Danner warns against drying footwear too quickly. Let leather boots dry in a ventilated area rather than placing them against a fire or in direct sun. Follow the boot manufacturer’s instructions for any additional leather care; do not assume that every leather boot has the same requirements.

Leather may be part of a boot that also includes rubber, fabric, a lining, an outsole, and adhesives. Care for the boot as a whole according to the maker’s instructions instead of focusing only on the leather upper. The guidance here is about drying: avoid direct or extreme heat and allow air to circulate. It does not establish which conditioner or other leather treatment a particular boot needs, or when to apply one. Check the boot maker’s material-specific care directions for that.

Waterproof boots

Waterproof construction does not remove the need to dry the interior. Danner recommends drying boots when they get wet inside, and GORE-TEX advises not letting footwear remain wet for too long. Follow the specific boot maker’s instructions for its materials and construction. GORE-TEX guidance is additional general care advice, not a substitute for instructions from the manufacturer of the finished boot.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

“Waterproof” describes a construction or feature; it is not a reason to use high heat or leave the boot damp. The outer materials, lining, and other components still need care appropriate to that model. If the boot maker’s instructions address waterproof footwear or a particular membrane, follow them over a general suggestion. If the boot is leather, use the leather-specific directions as well; GORE-TEX similarly tells owners of leather footwear to consult the footwear manufacturer.

Boots with removable footbeds

Take removable footbeds out and let them dry separately from the boot. This gives both parts a chance to dry rather than leaving a damp footbed inside a closed boot. Danner’s odor-management guidance discusses removing footbeds after the boots are dry; for practical drying, take them out at the start so the interior and footbeds can air separately. If the footbed is fixed or difficult to remove, do not pull it out by force.

Keep track of which footbed belongs to which boot if they are shaped differently, and return them only after the boot and footbeds are dry. This is a practical way to avoid reinstalling a damp footbed; it is not a separate product-care rule. If the manufacturer gives instructions for cleaning or drying the footbed itself, follow those rather than applying an unapproved treatment.

Prevent odor by making drying routine

Odor advice starts with moisture management. Danner says one of the best ways to prevent bacteria growth is to dry the inside of boots each time they get wet, including from sweaty feet. That is a care recommendation, not a quantified clinical claim: the cited footwear guidance does not establish a particular reduction in odor, bacteria, or health risk.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Danner’s Odor Management page puts the recommendation plainly: “One of the best ways to prevent bacteria growth is to dry the inside of your boots every time they get wet, either from the elements or sweaty feet (don’t worry, we’ve all been there!).” For everyday care, the key instruction is to respond to interior dampness whether the source was weather or perspiration. You do not need to wait for a boot to smell before drying it.

Make drying part of the routine after a wet day or a wear that leaves the interior damp:

  • Open the boot and remove removable footbeds.
  • Dry the boot and footbeds thoroughly in a ventilated place, or use a compatible boot dryer according to its instructions.
  • Do not put damp boots away closed up; let them finish drying first.
  • If odor remains after drying, consider a product labeled for boot odor and follow its directions.

Danner places odor-reducing spray after drying, not as a substitute for drying a wet boot. Apply an odor-control product only once the boots are dry and only as its label directs.

A simple habit is to assess the boots after each wear: did rain, snow, or perspiration leave the interior damp? If yes, open them and begin drying. If not, no special drying treatment follows from the guidance here. The goal is not to treat every boot with chemicals or heat; it is to avoid leaving a damp interior closed up and to use a compatible method when drying is needed.

What to do if odor persists

First make sure the interior and any removable footbeds have dried completely. A product used while the boot is still damp does not address the underlying moisture, and the care guidance does not support using spray as a replacement for drying.

If the boots are dry but still smell, an odor eliminator labeled for footwear is an optional next step. Follow the product label and the boot maker’s care instructions. Danner recommends replacing footbeds once per year as part of its odor-management guidance; treat that as Danner’s recommendation, not a universal replacement schedule for all boots. Consider replacement if a footbed is worn or remains odorous, while checking the boot maker’s guidance for compatible replacements.

  • Please Note: To reach 10Gbps speed, keep the cable under 3.3 ft. For USB A Male to USB C adapters, try flipping the USB C connector. USB C Male to USB A adapters support bidirectional 10Gbps transfer within 3.3 ft

There is no universal cost or replacement interval established here. A spray is optional, and product directions vary. Danner’s annual footbed replacement suggestion belongs to its own odor-management advice; it should not be presented as a requirement for another brand or for every boot. If footbeds are not removable, do not attempt to extract them just to replace them. Check the boot maker’s instructions for maintenance options compatible with the model.

Keep expectations modest: the cited care pages do not quantify odor reduction, promise that any particular spray eliminates odor, or make clinical claims about bacteria, fungus, or health outcomes. If a product is used, it should be intended for footwear and used according to its label. The first supported response remains to dry the interior and removable footbeds thoroughly.

Common drying mistakes to avoid

  • Putting boots beside a fire: Danner warns against open flame and extreme heat, which can crack leather or damage the outsole.
  • Leaving boots in a sunny car: Danner specifically includes cars left in direct sunlight among the heat sources to avoid.
  • Assuming faster drying is safer: Rapid drying can harm leather and rubber, and heat can age stitching and adhesives.
  • Keeping footbeds inside while the boot dries: Remove them if they are designed to come out, and dry them separately.
  • Applying odor spray to wet boots: Dry the boots first, then use an odor product according to its label.
  • Assuming every boot dryer or setting is suitable: Follow both the boot maker’s and dryer maker’s instructions; the sources do not establish one universally safe temperature or drying duration.
  • Using a fixed drying-time rule: No single time applies to different materials, constructions, and levels of wetness. Check the boot and footbed rather than treating an estimate as a guarantee.
  • Pulling out a fixed footbed: Only remove a footbed that is designed to come out; forcing a fixed or difficult-to-remove component risks damaging it.
  • Assuming a waterproof boot can be left wet: Waterproof construction does not replace drying the inside when it becomes damp.

A simple decision guide

  • The inside is damp: Open the boot, remove removable footbeds, and dry both in a ventilated area.
  • You want to use a boot dryer: Confirm that its instructions and the boot maker’s care instructions allow it for the boot and use it only as directed.
  • The boot is leather or waterproof: Check the model-specific care instructions and avoid direct heat.
  • The boot is dry but still smells: Follow the label on a suitable odor-control product; Danner’s annual footbed-replacement recommendation applies to Danner guidance, not every brand.
  • The instructions are unclear: Do not guess at a high-heat method. Use a ventilated area, avoid direct heat, and consult the footwear maker for material-specific directions.

Frequently asked questions

How should I dry my boots after a wet walk?

Loosen the laces, pull the tongue forward, and remove footbeds if they are designed to come out. Dry the boot and footbeds in a ventilated place, or use a boot dryer only if both the boot and dryer instructions permit it. Avoid direct heat and do not rely on a fixed drying time; check that the interior and footbeds are dry before putting the boots away.

Can I put wet boots by a fire or in a sunny car to dry them faster?

No. Danner advises keeping footwear away from extreme heat such as fires and cars left in direct sunlight. Rapid drying can damage leather and rubber, and direct heat can crack leather or contribute to outsole damage. LOWA also warns that direct heat can shrink or crack leather. Choose ventilated drying instead.

Is a boot dryer safe for every kind of boot?

Not automatically. Danner recommends a boot dryer for wet boot interiors, but that does not establish that every dryer or setting is suitable for every boot. Check the care instructions for the boot and the instructions for the dryer, including any material or construction restrictions. Do not assume a hotter setting is better or use one that either maker prohibits.

How long do wet boots take to dry?

There is no single reliable duration for all boots. Material, construction, how wet the boot is, and the drying conditions differ. Follow the boot and dryer instructions, and check the inside and removable footbeds instead of relying on an across-the-board number of hours.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Should I use odor spray while the boots are still damp?

No. Dry the boots first, then use an odor-control product labeled for footwear if needed, following its label and the boot maker’s directions. Danner’s odor guidance positions odor-reducing spray after drying; it is not a substitute for drying a wet interior.

How often should I replace boot footbeds?

Danner recommends replacing footbeds once per year as part of its odor-management guidance. That is Danner’s recommendation, not a universal schedule for every manufacturer or boot. Check the boot maker’s guidance and consider whether the footbed is worn or remains odorous.

Do waterproof boots need to be dried inside?

Yes, when the interior gets wet or damp. Danner recommends drying the inside whenever boots get wet, and GORE-TEX advises against letting footwear remain wet for too long. Waterproof construction does not eliminate the need to dry damp interiors; follow the boot maker’s specific care instructions.
