The fastest reliable approach is to dry less laundry at once, remove more water with the fastest fabric-safe spin, and choose an adequate rather than maximum dryness setting. A washer-dryer combo usually washes more laundry than it can dry efficiently in one run, so a full wash load often needs to be split before drying.
Start with the load chart in your model’s manual. Manufacturer guidance for several combo families points to roughly half the wash load for drying, but the exact limit, cycle names, filter locations and hose arrangement vary by model and by whether the machine is vented, ventless or water-free.
Why washer-dryer combos take so long to dry
A combo performs two jobs in one drum, but its drying stage is commonly the bottleneck. The machine may accept a large wash load while having a smaller practical drying capacity. Whirlpool advises reducing the load to half the drum or less on the covered ventless all-in-one models in its long-dry-time guidance. LG says the drying capacity on the covered combo units is about half the washer capacity, and Haier gives similar advice to reduce the load by approximately half. These are model-family recommendations, not a universal capacity label.

Ventless systems generally need more time than vented systems because moisture is condensed rather than exhausted through a duct. Even within ventless machines, designs differ: some use water-cooled condensation, while newer systems described by LG use a water-free process with different drain requirements.

There is no independently established “normal” drying time for every combo. A manufacturer’s advertised cycle time applies to a named model and cycle, not to the entire category.
The quickest method: a step-by-step routine
- Split the load before drying. If the drum is near its wash capacity, remove enough clothing to leave generous tumbling room. Use the manual’s drying load chart first; where no clearer figure is available, the half-load guidance from Whirlpool, LG and Haier is a useful starting point.
- Run a suitable high-speed spin. Select the fastest spin that your fabric and model allow. A higher spin removes more water mechanically, leaving less moisture for the heater or condenser to handle. For a dry-only load that still feels saturated, LG recommends running a separate spin cycle first on the covered units described in its support guidance.
- Choose the least intensive dryness target that meets the need. On the cited Whirlpool product, Auto-Drying at Damp Dry or Dry is preferred over Extra Dry when speed matters. Whirlpool also recommends Regular drying with the Quick “How to Dry” selection on that product. Your machine may use different labels; choose the normal or regular option and stop at the required dryness level rather than automatically selecting maximum dryness.
- Arrange the load for even tumbling. Mix items of similar material and thickness. Separate heavy towels, denim and folded thick garments from lightweight shirts where possible. LG’s guidance notes that similar materials produce more consistent dry-only results and that folded thick clothing may not dry well.
- Check the result when the cycle ends. A slight damp feel can be characteristic of some ventless condensate systems. Whirlpool recommends removing those items and hanging them. Clothing that remains clearly wet, or a machine whose performance has deteriorated, requires model-specific troubleshooting rather than simply extending every cycle.
How much laundry should you dry?
Drying requires space for hot air and moisture movement as clothes repeatedly lift and fall. Packing the drum tightly traps damp fabric against itself and reduces that movement. The washer’s maximum load therefore should not be treated as the dryer’s maximum load.
| Guidance | What the manufacturer says | How to use it |
|---|---|---|
| Whirlpool covered ventless all-in-one models | Reduce the load to half the drum or less | Use as a starting point for the named model family; the manual takes precedence. |
| LG covered combo units | Dryer capacity is about half of washer capacity | Split a full wash load before drying unless your manual specifies otherwise. |
| Haier combo guidance | Reduce the load by approximately half | Keep enough empty space for free tumbling. |
| Samsung Bespoke AI Laundry Combo Super Speed cycle | Recommended load under 10 lb | This figure applies to that model family and cycle, not to other combos. |
When deciding whether to split a load, bulky absorbent items deserve special attention. A few towels can hold more water than a larger number of lightweight garments and can dominate the drying time. If the drum appears full after loading, remove the thickest pieces and dry them separately.

Select the fastest fabric-safe spin
Spin speed is one of the few steps that directly reduces the amount of moisture the drying system must evaporate or condense. Select the highest speed permitted for the load and the garment-care instructions. Delicate fabrics, wool and items with a low spin limit should not be forced into a high-speed setting simply to save time.
Run a separate spin when a dry-only load is dripping
If clothing is very wet at the start of a dry-only program, run a spin-only cycle first when your model permits it. LG specifically recommends this approach for a dry-only load that did not spin out properly on the covered units described in its support material. A second spin is useful only when the machine can distribute the load and reach speed; an unbalanced load may pause or reduce the spin automatically.
Check for an uneven load
Large single items can bunch around the drum and prevent effective extraction. Add a few similar-weight pieces or redistribute the load, following the manual’s instructions. Do not add laundry merely to fill space if the total load would exceed the drying limit.
Choose a cycle that is fast enough, not simply the hottest or longest
Prefer normal or regular drying for everyday loads
On the Whirlpool product covered by its long-dry-time guidance, Regular drying and the Quick “How to Dry” choice are recommended when appropriate. LG’s dry-only guidance lists options such as Normal, Damp Dry, Low Temperature and timed drying, while noting that availability varies by model. Use the equivalent setting on your machine rather than assuming the same labels exist everywhere.

Stop at Damp Dry or Dry when you will hang garments
Extra Dry adds time after clothing has already reached a wearable or hang-dry condition. Whirlpool recommends Auto-Drying at Damp Dry or Dry instead of Extra Dry when the goal is a shorter run. Damp Dry can be useful for items that will finish on a rack or hanger, while a cabinet-ready load may need the regular Dry target.
Use timed drying carefully
A timed program can help when a sensor cycle repeatedly runs longer than needed, but the correct duration depends on load size, fabric and residual moisture. Start with a small, well-spun load and inspect it rather than setting a long period and hoping for the best. Excessive heat or time can shrink, crease or overdry fabrics.
Load the drum for better airflow
Group similar thicknesses
Dry lightweight synthetics, cotton shirts and similar fabrics together when possible. Heavy towels or denim can remain damp while thin garments become dry, causing a sensor cycle to continue or leaving an uneven result. LG recommends similar materials and thicknesses for consistent dry-only performance.
Unfold and loosen garments
Shake out twisted sleeves, open pillowcases and separate socks before loading. Avoid putting thick clothing into the drum as a tightly folded bundle; LG’s troubleshooting guidance identifies folded thick clothing as a reason items may not dry well.
Do not pack the drum after the spin
Clothes can occupy less volume when wet and spun than they did when dry, tempting you to add more. Resist that temptation if the drying space is already crowded. Tumbling room matters during the drying stage, not just the wash stage.
Vented, ventless and water-free designs
Vented combos
A vented combo exhausts humid air through ducting. Samsung’s buying guidance says a vented washer-dryer combo can dry faster when the home has suitable ducting. That advantage depends on a correctly installed, unobstructed duct path; a vented machine without appropriate ducting is not a practical faster-drying solution.
Ventless condensate systems
Whirlpool describes the covered ventless system in its guidance as heating air in the drum, condensing moisture through a water-cooled condenser and sending the resulting water through the washer’s drain hose. This design avoids an external exhaust duct but can take longer than a vented arrangement. Some clothes may feel slightly damp at the end; Whirlpool advises taking them out and hanging them.
Water-free ventless systems
LG distinguishes general combo models that use a small amount of water during drying from newer “water-free” systems. The plumbing and troubleshooting steps are not interchangeable. In the water-free design described by LG, the drain hose should descend smoothly and should not form a U-trap. Do not change hose routing based on a generic ventless checklist; identify the exact system in the manual first.

Samsung’s buying guide lists the following Super Speed wash-and-dry times for the named Bespoke AI Laundry Combo models it describes:
| Configuration | Published Super Speed time | Qualification |
|---|---|---|
| Vented Bespoke AI Laundry Combo models | 68 minutes | Samsung specification for the named models and Super Speed cycle; not a category-wide expectation. |
| Ventless Bespoke AI Laundry Combo models | 98 minutes | Samsung specification for the named models and Super Speed cycle; actual results depend on load and conditions. |
These figures include a particular wash-and-dry program and should not be compared with a dry-only cycle, a different load, or another manufacturer’s machine. Samsung support also recommends a Super Speed load under 10 lb for the specified model family. That is a cycle recommendation, not a universal combo limit.
Model-specific checks when drying is still slow
For the general LG design described in its support guidance
- Confirm that the water taps are open.
- Verify that the inlet hoses are connected correctly and are not reversed.
- Inspect the inlet filters for restriction.
- Maintain the drain-pump filter according to the model manual.
These checks apply to the general design described by LG, not automatically to every LG combo or every other brand.
For the LG water-free design described in its guidance
- Make sure the drain hose descends smoothly.
- Ensure the hose does not form a U-shaped trap that can impede drainage.
- Use the installation and troubleshooting diagrams for the exact model before moving the hose.
For Samsung Bespoke AI Laundry Combo models
Samsung support directs owners of the specified Bespoke AI Laundry Combo to check the lint filter and heat exchanger. Locate and clean only the components identified for your exact model; do not assume another combo has the same filter or heat-exchanger access.

Moisture at the end of a cycle is not always a failure. Whirlpool states that some items from its covered ventless condensate system can feel slightly damp and recommends removing and hanging them. This is different from clothes that are cold and saturated, a drum that repeatedly stops before drying, or a recent, unexplained decline in performance.

When the result is only mildly damp, hang the garments immediately and evaluate whether the load size and dryness target matched the manual. If the load remains wet after a correctly sized, well-spun cycle, proceed through the model’s troubleshooting guide. Do not treat the normal-damp explanation as a reason to ignore a blocked filter, drainage problem or installation issue.
Common mistakes that add drying time
- Drying the entire wash load: the drum is too crowded for effective tumbling.
- Skipping the final spin: the drying system must remove water that the washer could have extracted mechanically.
- Selecting Extra Dry automatically: the machine runs beyond the point needed for hanging or normal use.
- Combining towels with thin shirts: heavy, absorbent pieces remain wet while lighter items overdry.
- Leaving garments folded: thick inner layers stay damp.
- Applying the wrong plumbing advice: water-using condensate models and water-free systems can require different hose arrangements.
- Cleaning an assumed filter: only the filters or heat exchanger named for your model should be serviced.
- Comparing advertised times as universal: a named Super Speed figure does not predict every load or combo.
A practical decision tree
- Is the drum more than half full for drying? Split the load and rerun the drying portion.
- Are the clothes dripping before drying? Run the fastest permitted spin, or a separate spin-only cycle if your model supports it.
- Are the garments mixed in thickness or folded? Separate heavy items, loosen bundles and dry similar materials together.
- Is the dryness setting Extra Dry? Try the normal or regular target, Damp Dry or Dry, depending on what you need.
- Is the result only slightly damp on a covered ventless system? Hang the items and monitor the next correctly sized load.
- Is drying still poor after those changes? Follow the exact manual’s checks for taps, hoses, filters, drainage and heat-exchanger maintenance.
When choosing a combo, drying design matters
If drying speed is a primary requirement, determine whether your home can support a vented appliance with proper ducting. Samsung’s guidance favors a vented combo for faster drying when that ducting exists. A ventless model may be the only practical choice in a location without an exhaust route, but you should plan around smaller drying loads and potentially longer cycles.

Ask the manufacturer or retailer for the drying capacity, not just the wash capacity, and verify which cycle the published time represents. The manual should also explain whether the machine uses water during condensation, whether it has a water-free system, how the drain hose must be routed, and which filters or heat exchanger require maintenance.
Frequently asked questions
Can I dry as much laundry as I wash?
Usually not efficiently. Guidance from Whirlpool, LG and Haier points to about half the wash load for the cited combo families, while the manual for your model controls the actual limit.
Will a faster spin damage clothes?
It can if the fabric-care instructions prohibit that speed. Use the fastest setting allowed for both the garment and the appliance, not the highest number regardless of the load.
Why does my combo use water while drying?
Some ventless condensate designs use water-cooled condensation and send the condensate through the drain. LG also describes newer water-free systems, so the answer depends on the model generation and its manual.
Is 68 minutes a normal combo wash-and-dry time?
It is a Samsung-published Super Speed figure for the named vented Bespoke AI Laundry Combo models in its buying guide. It is not a general benchmark for all washer-dryer combos or all loads.
