Download everything while the store still works: sign in to the account that made each purchase, review its purchase history, buy any remaining games or DLC before the published sales cutoff, then redownload the base games, expansions and updates. Launch every title and confirm that its downloadable content appears before you delete anything or reset the console.

A sales shutdown and a download shutdown are separate events. Nintendo’s Wii U and Nintendo 3DS stores stopped selling software and DLC on March 27, 2023, at 5:00 PM Pacific, but Nintendo says previously purchased games and DLC can still be redownloaded for the foreseeable future. That wording is not a permanent guarantee, and other storefronts may set different deadlines or remove redownload access altogether.

What a storefront closure actually changes

Digital storefronts usually provide several distinct services: selling new software, delivering purchases that are already associated with an account, distributing patches, and supporting online communication. A company can discontinue one service while keeping another available. Treating the word closure as a single switch is the most common preservation mistake.

Sales can end before redownloads

When sales end, you can no longer buy a game, expansion, season pass or other downloadable item through that store. A redownload service, by contrast, delivers an item you bought previously. Nintendo’s official wording for Wii U and Nintendo 3DS says that sales ended but previously purchased software and DLC remained redownloadable for the foreseeable future.

Redownload access does not make unpurchased DLC available

The allowance covers purchases already recorded on the owning account. If an expansion, cosmetic pack, season pass or other item was never purchased before the sales cutoff, downloading the base game later will not create a purchase entitlement for it. Buy anything you still want while the sales page remains active.

Updates and online features have their own lifecycles

A title may still download even after its online communication service has ended. Nintendo records that online play and other functionality using online communication for Wii U and the Nintendo 3DS family ended on April 8, 2024, while its support notice continued to describe redownloads and software updates as available for the foreseeable future. Check each service separately rather than assuming that a working download also means working multiplayer.

Prepare before the sales cutoff

1. Locate every purchasing account

Make a list of the accounts used by each person in the household. A game bought by one account may not appear when another account opens its purchase history. Sign in on the original console with the account that owns the transaction, and keep the account password and any required two-factor authentication method available.

  • This is NOT a micro SD card
  • SD cards are fully compatible with all SD-compliant devices
  • Speed performance rating: Class 4 (based on SD 2.0 Specification)

Do not rely on a remembered console nickname. Verify the account by opening its purchase history and matching the displayed games, expansions and other downloadable items. If a purchase is missing, stop before deleting data or transferring the system; investigate the account mismatch while support records are still accessible.

2. Inventory the complete library

Record the base game, every expansion, season pass, bundle, soundtrack or in-game downloadable item you own. Include purchases made years ago and content installed on a different memory card. A written list or spreadsheet should identify the owning account, the console, the storage location and whether you have successfully launched the item.

Inventory matters because a storefront can list the base game and its add-ons separately. Redownloading the base game alone does not prove that each owned DLC entitlement has been delivered.

3. Purchase anything that is still available

Use the store before its announced cutoff to buy items you genuinely want to keep. The sales deadline is the last opportunity to create a new entitlement; waiting for the redownload period will not help with an item that was never purchased.

4. Check local storage before starting

Bulk downloads can require more free space than the base game alone. Remove only content you can safely redownload, and leave room for patches and temporary installation files. On Nintendo 3DS systems, a compatible SD or microSD card can provide additional space, but confirm the console model, supported card format, capacity limit and adapter requirements before purchasing a card. A card that fits physically may still be incompatible with the system.

5. Keep the original console and account state intact

Connect the console to a reliable network, charge it or connect its power supply, and avoid a factory reset until every title has been checked. Do not transfer the account or console merely to tidy your setup; read the platform’s current transfer and account-linking instructions first. A transfer can change which system is authorized to use downloaded content.

Download games, DLC and updates in a controlled order

The labels differ by platform, but the safest sequence is consistent. Use the store’s redownload or purchase-history screen rather than searching for an item as though it were a new sale.

  1. Sign in to the owning account. On the console that will keep the library, authenticate the account that made the purchase. If several accounts bought content, repeat the process for each one.
  2. Open the purchase-history or redownload area. Choose the platform menu that lists previously acquired software. A title that is no longer sold may still appear here because its entitlement is separate from its public sales listing.
  3. Download the base game first. Wait for installation to finish and confirm that the game reaches its main menu. If the download fails, record the error before deleting any other content.
  4. Download every owned DLC item. Return to the same history or redownload list and select each expansion, pass and other add-on individually when the platform presents them separately. Do not assume that installing a season pass automatically downloads every component.
  5. Install all available software updates. Updates can be listed separately from the game and its DLC. Apply them while the update service remains available, then restart the title so it can complete any first-run installation.
  6. Launch the title and check its own menus. Look for an expansion campaign, additional characters, maps, items or other DLC indicator inside the game. Some platforms require an entitlement download or an in-game content check after the store download completes.
  7. Repeat for the next title. Work through the inventory one entry at a time. Mark a game complete only after the base software, every owned add-on, the latest available update and a successful launch have been verified.
  8. Keep the verified installation. Do not delete a working copy simply to reclaim space until you have confirmed that the platform still offers redownloads and that you can restore the item from the owning account.

When the console shows an item as owned but will not download

  • Check that the signed-in account is the purchaser, not merely a family member who used the console.
  • Confirm that the console has enough free space for the download and update.
  • Restart the console and network connection, then reopen the purchase-history screen.
  • Check the platform owner’s current service notice for regional restrictions, maintenance or a changed deadline.
  • Keep the purchase record and any error code. Do not factory-reset the system while the entitlement problem is unresolved.

How to verify DLC instead of assuming it worked

DLC verification should happen in two places: the platform’s download list and the game’s own menus. The platform list proves that the account selected the item for download. The game confirms that the installed files are recognized by the correct title and region.

Use a simple verification record

  • Write the game title and owning account.
  • List each add-on by its exact store name.
  • Record whether the download completed and whether an update installed.
  • Launch the game and note the menu or in-game location where the content appears.
  • Record any content that requires a separate entitlement check or an internet connection.

If an expansion does not appear, close and relaunch the game after the platform finishes installing it. Check that the add-on belongs to the same edition and region as the base game, and return to the account’s redownload list. Avoid deleting the base game as a first response; doing so can remove a working installation while leaving the entitlement problem unsolved.

What to do after the store stops selling content

Once the sales service has ended, use the platform’s redownload or purchase-history function for items already owned. The fact that a product page can no longer be purchased does not by itself show that an earlier purchase has disappeared.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Keep the console connected long enough to complete pending downloads and updates, but do not confuse a successful download with a permanent preservation guarantee. Save your account credentials, purchase inventory and verification notes in a secure place. If the platform owner announces a new redownload deadline, treat that notice as a new action date.

When moving to another console, read the current transfer and account-linking instructions first. A transfer may require the original system, an authenticated account or a particular order of operations. Do not assume that copying files to a memory card alone transfers ownership; the platform’s entitlement system still controls access.

Compare platforms using the questions that affect your library

There is no universal closure rule for every console, PC or mobile storefront. Before relying on a deadline, obtain the platform owner’s current notice and answer these questions:

  • When exactly do new software and DLC sales stop, including the time zone and region?
  • Can previously purchased games be redownloaded after that time?
  • Does the redownload policy explicitly include DLC, season passes and in-game downloadable content?
  • Will patches and software updates continue, and until what date?
  • Can an account or library be transferred to another approved console?
  • How long does the provider promise access, and does it use wording such as “for the foreseeable future” rather than a fixed end date?
  • Are online play, servers, cloud saves or other communication features ending on a separate schedule?

Write down the provider’s exact language and publication date. Nintendo’s use of “for the foreseeable future” shows why a reader should not silently convert a qualified promise into “forever.”

Nintendo-specific cases to handle carefully

Wii U and Nintendo 3DS eShop purchases

Nintendo Support states that software and DLC sales ended at 5:00 PM Pacific on March 27, 2023. Its discontinuation Q&A and requirements information say that previously purchased games and DLC can still be redownloaded and that software updates remain possible for the foreseeable future. Follow the preparation and verification sequence above on the original console and owning account.

Wii Shop Channel purchases

Nintendo says that, for the time being, purchased Wii content may be redownloaded or transferred from a Wii system to a Wii U system. Because the wording is time-limited, complete any needed redownload or transfer while the facility remains available and keep the original system until the transfer has been verified.

Online communication shutdown

Nintendo records April 8, 2024 as the end of online play and other functionality using online communication for Wii U and the Nintendo 3DS family. Locally installed games and DLC can therefore remain usable even when a network-dependent feature no longer connects. Check a title’s requirements before treating it as fully preserved.

Storage, memory cards and physical preservation

Storage planning is a practical part of a closure download. Keep enough free capacity for the game, its DLC, updates and installation overhead. If you use removable storage, label the card and retain any adapter required by the console. Do not format a card or move files between systems until the platform’s instructions confirm that the action preserves the account relationship.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

You may also preserve installers, manuals and account records lawfully. This guidance does not establish permission to bypass platform security, defeat encryption or redistribute copyrighted files. Use the platform’s supported download, transfer and backup features, and keep proof of purchase where available.

Troubleshooting checklist

The game is missing from redownload history

  • Sign out and back in with each account that may have made the purchase.
  • Check the original console and the platform’s purchase-history view.
  • Review receipts or account records for the exact title and region.
  • Contact the platform owner while support records are still available, using the transaction information and any error code.

The base game downloads but DLC does not

  • Return to the purchase-history list and select the add-on separately.
  • Confirm that the DLC was purchased before the sales cutoff; unpurchased DLC is not included in redownload rights.
  • Check storage, title edition and region compatibility.
  • Launch the base game after installation and look for the DLC in its own menus.

An update will not install

  • Verify the console is online and has free storage.
  • Restart the console and retry from the title’s update option or the platform’s software list.
  • Record the update status and error before deleting the game.
  • Check whether the platform has announced a separate update-service end date.

A transfer or reset is unavoidable

Pause and read the platform’s current transfer documentation before proceeding. Confirm that the owning account, downloaded titles and removable storage are included in the supported process. Complete a test launch on the destination system before erasing the original one.
