Turbo C++ 3.0 was built for MS-DOS, so it does not install or run natively on most modern Windows 10 systems. The practical way to use it is to run the DOS version inside DOSBox, an emulator that provides the DOS environment Turbo C++ expects.
This guide explains what to download, how to prepare the files, and how to launch the IDE without confusing Turbo C++ with newer Borland or Embarcadero compiler products.
Before you download Turbo C++
There is no current Windows 10 edition of the classic Turbo C++ DOS IDE. Turbo C++ 3.0 is a 16-bit DOS application. On 64-bit Windows 10, double-clicking TC.EXE in File Explorer will normally produce an error such as “This app can’t run on your PC” because 64-bit Windows cannot execute 16-bit DOS programs directly.

- A Turbo C++ 3.0 archive or installation media that you are legally entitled to use
- DOSBox for Windows
- A simple folder such as
C:TURBOC3in which to extract the Turbo C++ files
Do not assume that a website calling itself “Turbo C++ Official Download” is an official Borland source. Many download pages are third-party mirrors or repackaged bundles. Also, Embarcadero’s free Borland C++ Compiler 5.5 is a different Win32 compiler package, not the classic Turbo C++ DOS IDE.
Download DOSBox
- Open the DOSBox download page.
- Download the Windows installer. The commonly distributed classic package is named
DOSBox0.74-3-win32-installer.exe. - Run the installer and accept the default options unless you have a reason to change the installation folder.
DOSBox versions and DOSBox-based alternatives may differ, so the exact installer name can change. The commands in this guide apply to the standard DOSBox command prompt.
Extract the Turbo C++ files
Download the Turbo C++ archive only from a source you trust and are permitted to use. Do not mount a ZIP file directly in DOSBox. Extract it first.

- Check the resulting directory structure in File Explorer.
A typical installation contains folders such as:
C:TURBOC3BIN
C:TURBOC3INCLUDE
C:TURBOC3LIB
C:TURBOC3BGISome archives add an extra directory level:
C:TURBOC3TCBINTC.EXEThat difference matters. The DOSBox command must point to the folder that actually contains TC.EXE. If extracting the archive creates C:TURBOC3TURBOC3BIN, either move the inner contents up one level or use the correct path when mounting.

Launch Turbo C++ in DOSBox
Start DOSBox from the Windows Start menu. At the DOSBox prompt, mount the extracted Windows folder as a virtual DOS drive:
mount c C:TURBOC3Then switch to that virtual drive:
C:The C: drive here is virtual. It refers to the folder assigned by the mount command; it does not necessarily mean that DOSBox has access to the entire physical Windows C: drive.
If the extracted files have BIN directly under the mounted folder, run:

TC.EXEYou can usually use TC instead of TC.EXE:
cd BIN
TCIf the files are inside a TCBIN path, use:
cd TCBIN
TC.EXETurbo C++ should now open in the DOSBox window.
Use a different folder name
If you extracted the files to C:DOSBoxTURBOC3 or C:OLDGAMESTURBOC3, replace the mount path with the actual location:

TC.EXEDo not enter a placeholder such as C:pathtoturboCdirectory unless that exact folder exists. A short path containing no spaces, such as C:TURBOC3, avoids many command and quoting problems.
Make Turbo C++ start automatically
Entering the commands manually works, but you can configure DOSBox to run Turbo C++ whenever it starts.
- Open DOSBox.
- At the prompt, type
CONFIGor open the DOSBox configuration file from its installed program or Start-menu shortcuts. The file location and name vary between DOSBox builds. - Find the section at the end of the configuration file, usually headed
[autoexec]. - Add commands matching your folder structure.
For a package with C:TURBOC3TCBINTC.EXE, use:
mount c C:TURBOC3
c:
cd TCBIN
TC.EXEFor a package with C:TURBOC3BINTC.EXE, use:
mount c C:TURBOC3
c:
cd BIN
TC.EXESave the file and restart DOSBox. If the window opens and closes immediately when using a shortcut or bundled “Start Turbo C++” launcher, open DOSBox manually and type each command separately. That identifies whether the problem is the mount path, the directory path, or the missing executable.

Common errors and fixes

Use the DOSBox DIR command to inspect each level:
mount c C:TURBOC3

DIRThis makes it clear where the executable is located instead of guessing the directory name.

Do you need the original INSTALL program?
The original Turbo C++ 3.0 distribution used an INSTALL program from installation media. A modern archive may already contain an extracted, ready-to-run directory and therefore may not need that installer. Do not run an installation step merely because an online tutorial includes one; first check whether TC.EXE, INCLUDE, and LIB are already present.
Is Turbo C++ suitable for Windows 10 development?
Turbo C++ is useful when a class, textbook, or legacy project specifically requires its DOS-era IDE and compiler. It is not a practical choice for modern Windows software. It lacks current C++ language support, modern libraries, 64-bit output, and contemporary debugging and build tooling.
For new projects, use a maintained compiler and IDE such as Visual Studio, Visual Studio Code with a current compiler toolchain, or a current Embarcadero C++ product. Use Turbo C++ through DOSBox only when compatibility with old coursework or source code is the reason for using it.

Can I install Turbo C++ directly on Windows 10?
Not reliably on 64-bit Windows 10. Turbo C++ 3.0 is a 16-bit DOS application. Run it inside DOSBox instead of opening TC.EXE directly in File Explorer.

Where can I download the official Turbo C++ Windows 10 version?
There is no current Windows 10-specific edition of the classic Turbo C++ DOS IDE. Treat third-party “official download” pages cautiously and verify that you have the legal right to use any archive you obtain.
Why does DOSBox say that TC is not found?
The usual causes are an incorrect mount path, an unextracted ZIP, or an extra directory level. Check whether the executable is at C:TURBOC3BINTC.EXE or C:TURBOC3TCBINTC.EXE, then use the matching cd command.
Can I use Embarcadero’s free Borland C++ Compiler instead?
You can use it as a separate compiler, but it is not Turbo C++ 3.0 and does not provide the classic DOS IDE. Choose it only if your project does not specifically require Turbo C++.

No. Turbo C++ 3.0 supports an old DOS-era compiler and language environment. It is unsuitable for current C++ standards and modern Windows application development.
