The safest way to download the Realtek High Definition Audio driver for Windows 11 is usually through your computer or motherboard manufacturer—not from a random driver website. Realtek supplies general-purpose packages, while PC manufacturers often add hardware-specific audio tuning, microphone support, Dolby or DTS components, Waves software, and control-panel integrations.
Use Windows Update first. If it does not provide a suitable driver, download the package for your exact laptop, desktop, or motherboard model. Realtek’s official download page is a fallback for systems that do not have a usable manufacturer package.
Choose the correct download source
There is no single Realtek driver that is correct for every Windows 11 computer. The right source depends on how your PC was built.

Realtek describes its downloads as general drivers for its audio chips. They may not include the customizations supplied by the computer or motherboard manufacturer. That is why a generic package can restore basic sound but still leave microphone effects, jack detection, equalizer controls, or surround-sound features unavailable.

Method 1: Check Windows Update first
Windows 11 automatically installs many recommended hardware drivers. This is the least risky option because Windows matches the driver to the detected hardware and operating system.
- Open Start > Settings > Windows Update.
- Select Check for updates.
- Install the available updates.
- Restart the computer.
Also check for driver updates that Windows does not install automatically:
- Go to Start > Settings > Windows Update > Advanced options.
- Under Additional options, select Optional updates.
- Expand Driver updates, if the category is available.
- Select the Realtek or audio driver and choose Download and install.
- Restart Windows when the installation finishes.
The Optional updates page may not appear when Windows has no optional updates for your computer. Optional driver updates are not installed automatically, so this page is worth checking when your audio works poorly after an upgrade.
Method 2: Download the driver from your PC manufacturer
Use this method if Windows Update finds nothing, sound stopped working after a Windows 11 upgrade, or the generic driver lacks features provided by your computer maker.
Find your exact model
Do not search only for “Realtek Windows 11 driver.” First identify the computer or motherboard model.

- On a laptop or prebuilt desktop, check the label on the case, the original invoice, or the manufacturer’s support application.
- Press Windows + R, type
msinfo32, and press Enter. Check System Manufacturer and System Model. - For a custom-built PC, press Windows + R, type
msinfo32, and check BaseBoard Manufacturer and BaseBoard Product.
Download and install the package
- Open the manufacturer’s official support website.
- Search using the exact model, service tag, serial number, or motherboard name.
- Open the model’s Drivers, Downloads, or Support page.
- Select Windows 11. Choose 64-bit if an architecture option is provided; nearly all supported Windows 11 installations are 64-bit.
- Find the category named Audio, Sound, Realtek Audio, or High Definition Audio.
- Compare the listed release date and version, then download the package intended for that model.
- Open the downloaded
.exeor.msifile. - Follow the installer’s instructions and restart the PC.
Check the same support page for companion software. Some systems need an audio-control application, amplifier package, Waves component, Dolby software, or OEM utility for all audio features to work. Installing only a generic Realtek driver may not restore those functions.
Method 3: Download Realtek’s official generic driver
Use Realtek’s official website only after checking Windows Update and the computer or motherboard manufacturer. It can be useful for a custom-built system whose manufacturer no longer hosts a compatible package, but it is not automatically the best choice.

- Open Realtek’s official audio download page.
- Read the warning explaining that the driver is general-purpose and may not contain system- or motherboard-specific customizations.
- Accept the terms by selecting the agreement checkbox.
- Choose Download this file.
- Save the package to a known location such as Downloads.
- Open the downloaded installer and follow its prompts.
- Restart Windows after installation.
Download only from realtek.com or the manufacturer’s official domain. Avoid websites offering “driver update” tools or repackaged Realtek installers. Such downloads may be incompatible, bundled with unwanted software, or modified from the original package.
Install a ZIP package or INF driver manually
Most downloaded packages include an installer. If the file is a ZIP archive containing driver files and .inf files but no setup program, extract it first and install it through Device Manager.
- Right-click the ZIP file and select Extract All.
- Open Start, search for Device Manager, and open it.
- Expand Sound, video and game controllers.
- Right-click the Realtek audio device and select Update driver.
- Choose Browse my computer for drivers.
- Browse to the extracted folder.
- Enable Include subfolders, if that option is shown.
- Select Next and allow Windows to install the matching driver.
- Restart the PC.
You can also use PnPUtil from an elevated Command Prompt. Replace the path with the folder containing the extracted driver:

pnputil /add-driver "C:PathToDriver*.inf" /subdirs /installTo open an elevated Command Prompt, search for Command Prompt, right-click it, and select Run as administrator. The /subdirs switch searches subfolders, while /install installs the driver on matching devices. PnPUtil may not force a lower-ranked driver onto a device if Windows considers another installed driver a better match.
Update Realtek through Device Manager
Device Manager can search Windows Update and your local driver store, but it does not replace the manufacturer’s download page. A message saying that the best driver is already installed does not prove that the manufacturer has no newer package.
- Open Device Manager.
- Expand Sound, video and game controllers.
- Right-click the Realtek device.
- Select Update driver.
- Choose Search automatically for drivers.
- Restart Windows if a driver is installed.
Confirm that the driver installed
- Open Device Manager.
- Expand Sound, video and game controllers.
- Right-click the Realtek device and choose Properties.
- Open the Driver tab.
- Check Driver Provider, Driver Date, Driver Version, and Digital Signer.
Also test the actual output device. Open Start > Settings > System > Sound, select the intended speakers or headphones, and use Test. A driver can install successfully while Windows is still sending sound to an HDMI monitor, Bluetooth headset, or another output.
Do not determine which driver is newer solely from the displayed driver date. Driver dates are provider-supplied information, and Windows uses additional matching and targeting data when selecting a driver.
Realtek is missing from Device Manager
If the Realtek entry is absent, the issue may be a disabled device, a hidden device, a missing chipset or audio driver, or hardware that Windows is not detecting.

- Open Device Manager and expand Sound, video and game controllers.
- If the audio device appears disabled, right-click it and select Enable device.
- Select View > Show hidden devices.
- Select Action > Scan for hardware changes.
- Restart the computer.
- If the device remains absent, install the audio package from the exact PC or motherboard support page.
Look under Other devices for an Unknown device or an entry with a yellow warning icon. Install the manufacturer’s chipset drivers as well as the audio driver if the support page lists them. On some systems, Windows cannot correctly enumerate integrated audio until the chipset or platform drivers are installed.

Reinstall the audio device
- In Device Manager, expand Sound, video and game controllers.
- Right-click the audio device and select Uninstall device.
- If offered, select Attempt to remove the driver for this device.
- Select Uninstall and restart Windows.
Windows normally redetects the audio hardware and reinstalls a suitable driver after the restart. You can then install the manufacturer package again.
Roll back a failed update
If audio worked before a recent driver or Windows update, open the device’s Properties > Driver tab in Device Manager and select Roll Back Driver. This option is available only when Windows has retained an earlier driver.
Try the generic Windows audio driver
A generic driver can help determine whether the Realtek package is causing the problem:

- Select the available generic audio device.
- Select Next and restart.
This may restore basic sound but remove manufacturer-specific enhancements and control-panel features.

Restart Windows audio services
- Search for Services and open the app.
- Right-click Windows Audio and choose Restart.
- Do the same for Windows Audio Endpoint Builder.
- If necessary, restart Remote Procedure Call (RPC).
The practical download order
- Install normal updates through Settings > Windows Update.
- Check Windows Update > Advanced options > Optional updates.
- Download the audio package for the exact PC or motherboard model.
- Use Realtek’s official generic download only when an OEM package is unavailable or unsuitable.
- Use Device Manager or PnPUtil for packages that contain INF files without an installer.
- Restart after installing, removing, or rolling back a driver.

Is the Realtek website the best place to download the Windows 11 driver?
Not usually. For a laptop, prebuilt desktop, or branded motherboard, use the manufacturer’s support page first. Realtek’s package is general-purpose and may omit hardware-specific audio features.
How do I know which Realtek driver I need?
Match the package to the exact computer model or motherboard model and Windows 11 version. Do not choose solely because the listing says Realtek High Definition Audio.
Why does Device Manager say the best driver is already installed?
Device Manager may not find a newer package hosted by the computer or motherboard manufacturer. Check that manufacturer’s support page directly.

Windows may have no optional driver updates available for the computer. The section does not always appear when there is nothing to offer.
Can I install a Realtek driver without an EXE installer?
Yes. Extract the package, then use Device Manager’s Browse my computer for drivers option, or run PnPUtil with an administrator Command Prompt.
Will a generic Realtek driver restore Dolby, Waves, or microphone enhancements?
Not necessarily. Those features may require additional OEM software or a customized manufacturer package.
