Godlike.Host offers hosted Valheim servers with its own game panel, SFTP access and free DDoS protection, if you would rather not host it yourself.
Valheim has no in-game command for downloading server files. To copy a BepInEx modpack, obtain File Manager, SFTP, FTP, or SSH access from the server owner or hosting provider, archive the server’s BepInEx directory, download that archive, and extract it into the correct destination. Preserve BepInEx/plugins, BepInEx/config, BepInEx/core, and any BepInEx/patchers directory when you need a faithful copy of the server installation.
What you are downloading
BepInEx is the mod-loading framework used by many modded Valheim servers. Thunderstore describes it as “BepInEx is a general purpose framework for Unity modding.” The Valheim pack adds scripts for the game and dedicated server and is normally placed in the Valheim game directory.

A server copy is more than the plugin DLLs. The BepInEx/plugins directory contains installed plugins, while BepInEx/config contains their settings. A host may also have BepInEx/core, BepInEx/patchers, framework support files, and generated logs. Copying only one plugin can leave dependencies or configuration behind.
The expected manual-install layout has these items beside the Valheim executable:

BepInEx/winhttp.dlldoorstop_config.ini
Those files are part of the loader installation. They are not created by an in-game menu and normally cannot be retrieved with a player password alone.
Access you need before starting
Ask the server owner or host for one of the following:
- A hosting-panel File Manager account with permission to download files or create archives.
- SFTP credentials, normally consisting of a host name, port, user name, password or key, and the server-root path.
- FTP credentials if the provider still offers FTP. SFTP is preferable because it encrypts the connection.
- SSH access to a Linux server, with permission to read the Valheim installation and create an archive.
An in-game Valheim password grants access to the game, not to the operating-system files. If the owner cannot grant file access, they must create the archive and send it to you, or provide an export through their host.
Steam PC is the platform assumed by the common Valheim BepInEx guides. Microsoft Store and Game Pass installations are described as difficult to mod, and Xbox clients cannot load BepInEx client mods. A server archive therefore does not make an Xbox client compatible.
Choose a transfer method

Delta Networks documents panel File Manager and SFTP as ways for administrators to reach server files and place plugins in the BepInEx folder. Downloading an archive through the same route is the natural reverse operation, but the exact controls remain provider-specific.
Prepare the server safely
- Tell players you are making a copy and check whether the host has a scheduled backup running.
- Stop the Valheim server if the panel recommends stopping before file operations. Stopping prevents a plugin from changing a configuration file while it is being copied.
- Wait for the panel or console to report that the process has stopped. Do not rely only on a disconnected game client.
- Record the server’s current mod versions if the host exposes that information. This helps you compare the archive with client profiles later.
Some providers expose a selector named Modding Framework. GameServerKings, for example, uses that label and exposes BepInEx/plugins, BepInEx/config, and BepInEx/core after a restart. Other panels use different labels, so follow the host’s current wording rather than an older tutorial.

Locate the BepInEx directory
Open the server root, not a general account home directory or a world-save-only folder. In a normal layout, the tree resembles:
Valheim server root/

└── doorstop_config.iniLinux hosts may use a different executable name and may keep the installation under a provider-specific path. The important test is that BepInEx, winhttp.dll, and doorstop_config.ini belong to the same Valheim installation. If you find several game directories, open the one selected by the server’s startup command.
If there is no BepInEx directory, check whether the host’s BepInEx framework is enabled and whether the server has been started once with it. Official BepInEx documentation says that extracting the framework into the game root and running it once creates BepInEx/config and BepInEx/LogOutput.log. A newly enabled server may therefore not show every directory until its first BepInEx startup.
Create an archive that keeps the folder structure
Using a hosting panel
- Open the server root in File Manager.
- Select the entire
BepInExdirectory, not just its visiblepluginssubfolder. - Choose the panel’s Archive, Compress, or Create ZIP/TAR action.
- Name the result something unambiguous, such as
BepInEx-modpack-2026-10-15.zip. - Confirm that opening the archive shows a top-level
BepInEx/directory. Avoid an archive that contains several unrelated server directories.
Panel labels and maximum archive sizes differ. If no archive action exists, download the directory recursively with SFTP or download its contents and compress them on your computer.
Using a Linux shell
From the directory that contains BepInEx, either command creates a single archive while retaining the tree:
zip -r BepInEx-modpack-2026-10-15.zip BepInEx
tar -czf BepInEx-modpack-2026-10-15.tar.gz BepInExUse one command, not both, unless you intentionally need two formats. The date in the filename is only an organizational convention; replace it with the actual backup date.

Using Windows PowerShell on a downloaded server directory
Compress-Archive -Path BepInEx -DestinationPath BepInEx-modpack-2026-10-15.zipBefore sharing the archive, inspect its contents. Keep configuration files when the goal is to reproduce the server’s settings. Remove credentials, private tokens, or private logs if the host or a plugin placed any in the directory. Do not remove a file merely because its name is unfamiliar; a plugin may depend on it.
Download the archive
- In File Manager, select the completed ZIP or TAR file and choose Download. Keep the browser window open until the transfer finishes.
- With SFTP, browse to the archive and copy it to a local folder. If you could not create an archive remotely, download
BepInExrecursively and compress it locally. - Check the local file size and open the archive before deleting the server copy. Confirm that
BepInEx/pluginsandBepInEx/configare present. - Leave the original server files untouched unless you are deliberately replacing the installation. A download is a copy, not a migration.
If a browser download fails or the panel times out, ask the host whether it imposes archive-size or download limits. An SFTP transfer is usually the practical alternative; the provider controls whether it is enabled.

- Stop the destination server before changing its files.
- Install the destination’s Valheim server files and the compatible Valheim BepInEx pack.
- Extract the archive into the destination’s server root. The result must be
destination-root/BepInEx/, notdestination-root/BepInEx-modpack-2026-10-15/BepInEx/. - Ensure
winhttp.dllanddoorstop_config.inisit beside the destination’s Valheim executable when the pack requires them. - On Linux, use the BepInEx startup script rather than the vanilla script. The documented script is
start_server_bepinex.sh; make it executable, configure it for the destination, and run it in place of the normal server script:
chmod +x start_server_bepinex.sh
./start_server_bepinex.shA hosting panel may provide a BepInEx startup option instead of exposing the script. Select that option only after checking the host’s current instructions. Startup fields and paths are not standardized across providers.
Use the files as a client mod profile
A dedicated-server archive is not automatically a complete Thunderstore or r2modman profile. It is a file copy. For a Steam PC client, use the mod manager’s profile directory or the Steam Valheim folder as appropriate for the pack you are installing.
- Close Valheim and the mod manager before replacing files.
- Back up the existing client profile so you can undo the change.
- Extract the archive into the profile or game directory required by your manager. Preserve the top-level
BepInExdirectory. - Install the same dependencies and versions that the server uses. A manager can resolve client-side dependencies, but it cannot override server permissions or install a server-only plugin into a remote host.
- Launch once and inspect the generated log before joining the server.
If your manager expects a manifest, create or update that profile through the manager rather than assuming the server’s folder contains one. The archive may include configuration and plugin files without recording the exact catalog metadata a manager uses for automated updates.
Know which files your friends need

Item, recipe, creature, and progression mods generally fall into the client-and-server category. Every player’s client and the server must carry matching files and versions. A mod manager can help install the client side, but it cannot make an incompatible server combination work.

For friends joining a modded server, provide the exact client-and-server plugin set and versions, along with any required configuration that changes gameplay. Do not distribute private logs or credentials just because they happen to be in the archive.
Start the server and verify BepInEx loaded
- Start the server through the BepInEx script or the host’s BepInEx startup setting.
- Watch the console for framework and plugin initialization messages.
- Open
BepInEx/LogOutput.logafter startup. Official BepInEx documentation identifies this file as a generated log after the framework runs once. - Check that the expected plugins appear without error entries and that the server reaches its normal ready state.
- Have one client connect before inviting the whole group. This limits the impact of a bad dependency or configuration.
If the log is not created, verify that the framework files are in the game root and that the process has permission to write there. If the log exists but a plugin fails, read the first dependency or version error rather than treating every later message as a separate fault.

The host shows no Download button
Some panels allow browsing but not recursive downloads or archive creation. Ask the owner to enable the permission, create the archive server-side, or provide SFTP credentials. Downloading hundreds of individual files through a browser is more error-prone than one archive.

The archive extracts to the wrong depth
If the destination contains BepInEx-modpack-2026-10-15/BepInEx, move the inner BepInEx directory and the loader files into the actual Valheim root. The loader searches relative to the game installation, so an extra wrapper directory prevents discovery.
The server starts vanilla
Confirm that winhttp.dll and doorstop_config.ini are beside the executable, not inside BepInEx. On Linux, confirm that the host is running start_server_bepinex.sh or its equivalent BepInEx startup setting, rather than the vanilla script.
Players are kicked for a version mismatch
Compare the server archive with each player’s profile. Reinstall the exact plugin versions and dependencies on both sides, then restart the server and the clients. A manager’s current version is not necessarily the version the server is running.

Players join but items or recipes are missing
Check whether the mod is client-and-server and whether every player installed it. Missing items commonly indicate that only the server or only the client received the relevant files, or that configuration differs.

A plugin fails after copying configuration
Temporarily test with the plugin’s original configuration from the archive and read BepInEx/LogOutput.log. If the destination uses a different Valheim or framework version, the copied configuration may reference an option the installed plugin does not support. Restore the destination backup before making broad changes.
The server is on Microsoft Store, Game Pass, or Xbox
The community guidance used for this workflow targets Steam PC. Microsoft Store and Game Pass installations are difficult to mod, and Xbox clients cannot load BepInEx client mods. Ask the host whether its supported platform can run the pack before spending time on a transfer.
Keep future copies reproducible
Use a dated archive name and keep a short text record of the Valheim version, BepInEx pack version, mod versions, and any files intentionally omitted. Store the archive outside the live server directory so a panel cleanup cannot remove your backup.
When updating, make a new archive instead of overwriting the previous one. This lets you roll back after a plugin update causes a startup error. Distribute the same archive, or a manager profile built from the same versions, to every player who needs the client-and-server set.
Because host layouts, panel labels, SSH availability, and archive controls vary, the server owner or provider remains the authority for the exact path and supported transfer method. The portable part of the procedure is the structure: stop safely, archive the complete BepInEx tree, preserve the loader files, extract at the destination root, and match versions on both sides.
