To listen to a soundtrack track offline in Spotify, add the song to a playlist, then download that playlist while you are online. Spotify requires Premium for music downloads; a free account can download podcasts, not songs. Spotify does not provide a separate download control for one individual music track, so a one-song playlist is the official workaround.

What Spotify offline downloads actually do

A Spotify download is an encrypted, in-app copy for offline playback. It is not an MP3 file that you can browse in a file manager, move to another player, or keep if your Spotify account no longer has the required access. Playback takes place inside the Spotify app.

Spotify’s current support guidance says Premium listeners can download albums and playlists. For a single soundtrack song, placing that song in a playlist gives Spotify a downloadable collection containing only the track you want. You can also download a complete soundtrack album or an existing playlist when you want several songs available together.

  • Music account: Premium is required for offline music. Free accounts can download podcasts only.
  • Internet connection: You must be online while adding the track and starting the download.
  • Storage: Spotify recommends at least 1 GB of free device memory.
  • Account retention: You must bring each device online at least once every 30 days to keep its downloads.
  • Device allowance: Spotify permits up to 10,000 downloaded tracks on each of up to five devices.

Those limits are Spotify Support guidance current in 2026. Menu names and the availability of particular features can change with app updates.

Download one soundtrack track with a one-song playlist

This is the most reliable method when you need one song from a film, television, game or other soundtrack rather than the entire album.

  1. Connect to the internet. Use Wi-Fi if possible, especially for a long album or a large existing playlist.
  2. Find the soundtrack track. Search for the song in Spotify and open its track menu.
  3. Add it to a playlist. Choose an existing playlist or create a new playlist containing only that song. A descriptive name such as the soundtrack title can make it easier to find later.
  4. Open the playlist. Stay online and navigate to Your Library, then open the playlist you just used.
  5. Start the download. On a phone or tablet, tap Download. On the desktop app, click the download button for the playlist.
  6. Wait for completion. Keep Spotify open long enough for the download indicator to show that the playlist and its track are saved.

Spotify downloads begin only after the playlist is selected for download. Merely saving a song to Your Library or liking it does not make it available offline.

Why a playlist is necessary for one song

Spotify’s supported music-download control applies to playlists and albums rather than an isolated song page. A one-track playlist therefore acts as a container for the soundtrack song. It also gives you a clear place to check the download state and to remove or replace the track later.

Confirm that the track finished downloading

Check the download indicator beside the playlist or its songs before leaving internet access. A visible completion indicator means Spotify has finished saving the content for offline use; a spinning or incomplete indicator means the process is still running or has failed.

For a stronger test, enable Offline mode after the download completes and open the playlist. If the song starts while the device has no connection, the offline copy is available. Do this before a flight, commute or trip rather than discovering a missing download after going offline.

Download an entire soundtrack album or a larger playlist

If you want the complete soundtrack, open the album page while online and use its Download control. Spotify saves the album’s available tracks for offline playback. The same control works for an existing playlist, whether it contains the entire soundtrack or a mixture of songs.

Downloading a full album is simpler than creating several one-song playlists, but it consumes more storage and counts every downloaded track toward Spotify’s per-device allowance. A one-song playlist is more efficient when you need only a single cue or theme.

What you want offline Recommended setup Trade-off
One soundtrack song Create or use a playlist containing that track, then download the playlist. Requires a playlist, but uses the least storage and track allowance.
Several selected soundtrack songs Put the chosen tracks in one playlist and download it. You must maintain the playlist if your selection changes.
The complete soundtrack Open the album and download it, or download a playlist containing the album. Uses more storage and counts all included tracks.
A mixed listening queue Download an existing playlist that includes the soundtrack tracks. Unwanted songs in that playlist will also be downloaded.

Play only downloaded music with Offline mode

Spotify normally attempts to stream when a connection is available and uses saved content when the connection disappears. Offline mode makes the boundary explicit: Spotify limits browsing and playback to material already downloaded on the device.

Mobile and tablet

  1. Open Spotify and tap your profile picture or the app menu.
  2. Choose Settings and privacy.
  3. Open Data-saving and offline.
  4. Turn on Offline mode.

The exact placement of the setting can vary by app version. With Offline mode enabled, a playlist that was not completely downloaded may show unavailable tracks instead of silently using mobile data.

Desktop

Open the Spotify desktop app menu and select its Offline Mode option. Desktop labels and menu placement can differ between releases, so use the app’s current settings or menu search if the wording is not identical.

Control whether downloads use Wi-Fi or mobile data

Spotify downloads over Wi-Fi by default. That default prevents a large soundtrack album from consuming a cellular-data allowance unexpectedly.

  1. Open Settings and privacy.
  2. Go to Data-saving and offline.
  3. Enable Downloads over cellular if you intentionally want Spotify to download without Wi-Fi.

Use cellular downloads only when your plan has enough data and the device has a stable signal. If the option is disabled, connect to Wi-Fi and leave Spotify online until the download indicator confirms completion.

Storage requirements and where Spotify saves downloads

Spotify recommends at least 1 GB of free memory for the app and its offline content. A soundtrack with many tracks, high-quality audio settings or several downloaded playlists can require more space, so treat 1 GB as a minimum recommendation rather than a guaranteed allowance for a particular library.

Android phones and tablets

If the device has an accessible external SD card, Spotify’s storage settings may allow downloads to be saved there. The option depends on the Android device, the card, and whether the operating system exposes that card to Spotify. A card that is full, removed, encrypted in an incompatible way or no longer readable can make existing downloads unavailable.

Look in Spotify’s storage settings for the current download-location choice. Do not remove or reformat the card while downloaded music is stored on it; Spotify may need to download the tracks again after the storage location changes.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

iPhone and iPad

Spotify says downloaded music on iPhone is stored encrypted on the device’s internal storage. You cannot browse those tracks as ordinary audio files or move them to a different music player. Keep sufficient free space on the device itself, even if other apps appear to have room available.

Desktop computers

The desktop app stores offline content on the computer’s available storage. No separate desktop capacity figure is published in Spotify’s current guidance, so available space and Spotify’s own storage-management controls determine how many playlists you can keep locally.

Account and device limits to plan around

Limit or requirement What it means in practice
Premium for music downloads A free account cannot save soundtrack tracks for offline music playback.
Up to 10,000 downloaded tracks per device Every downloaded song counts, including tracks inside albums and large playlists.
Up to five devices Downloads are limited across five devices connected to the account; adding another device may require removing an old download device or otherwise resolving the limit in Spotify.
Online at least once every 30 days Each device must reconnect to Spotify periodically so the service can verify the account and retain offline access.
At least 1 GB free memory recommended Low storage can stop a download or cause it to fail before all tracks are saved.

The 30-day rule is not a one-time activation. If a phone, tablet, computer or watch remains offline beyond that period, downloaded music can disappear or become unavailable until the device reconnects and the content is downloaded again if necessary.

Use a compatible Garmin watch without your phone

Spotify says Premium users can download music to compatible Garmin smartwatches for phone-free offline playback. This is an optional route for running, walking or other situations where carrying a phone is inconvenient.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Confirm that the Garmin model supports Spotify offline playback.
  2. Pair or connect the watch according to Garmin’s setup process and install or open the Spotify app on the watch.
  3. Use the watch while it is connected to the internet and select the album or playlist to download.
  4. Wait for the watch to show that the content is available offline before leaving the phone behind.
  5. Reconnect the watch periodically so Spotify can maintain the account’s offline authorization.

Compatibility is model-specific and can change as Garmin and Spotify update their apps. If the watch does not offer a download control, it may support remote control of phone playback but not phone-free Spotify downloads.

Fix a soundtrack download that fails or disappears

The download never starts

  • Confirm that the device is online and that Spotify can browse normally.
  • Check that the account has Premium music access.
  • Make sure the playlist or album’s Download control was actually activated.
  • Check free device storage; Spotify recommends at least 1 GB available.
  • If you enabled cellular downloads, verify that Downloads over cellular is on and that the mobile connection is working.

Some tracks are missing from a downloaded playlist

Open the playlist while online and inspect the individual download indicators. A playlist can be marked for download while one or more tracks are still pending or have failed. Leave the app connected until each required song shows as downloaded, then test with Offline mode.

Downloads disappeared after a period offline

Reconnect the affected device to Spotify. The service requires an online check at least once every 30 days to retain downloads. After reconnecting, inspect the playlist and download any tracks that remain unavailable.

Everything disappeared after reinstalling Spotify

Spotify lists app reinstallation as a reason downloaded music may be missing. Reinstalling removes the local encrypted copies, so sign back in, reconnect to the internet and download the required albums or playlists again.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

You reached the device limit

Spotify allows downloads on up to five devices. If the account has already used that allowance, identify an old phone, tablet, computer or watch that no longer needs offline content and resolve the device limit in Spotify before starting another download.

An Android SD-card download stopped working

Check that the SD card is inserted, mounted and readable by the device, and that it has free space. Spotify specifically lists a malfunctioning SD card as a possible cause of missing downloads. If the card is not accessible, switch Spotify to available internal storage and download the playlist again.

The app is outdated or another utility is interfering

Update Spotify to the current version, restart the app and try again. Spotify also advises checking whether cache-clearing or battery-saving apps are removing or restricting its offline data. Temporarily exempt Spotify from those restrictions, then repeat the download while connected.

The device has internet, but offline playback still fails

Open the playlist online and verify the download indicators rather than relying only on the presence of the playlist name. Then enable Offline mode and test the exact track. If it is unavailable there, it was not fully downloaded or its local copy was removed; reconnect and download it again.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A practical pre-trip checklist

  • Use a Premium account with music-download access.
  • Add the required soundtrack track to a playlist, or open the complete soundtrack album.
  • Start the download on Wi-Fi unless cellular downloading is intentional.
  • Wait for the playlist, album and required tracks to show completed download indicators.
  • Confirm at least 1 GB of free memory, with additional room for a large album or multiple playlists.
  • Turn on Offline mode and play the soundtrack once as a test.
  • For Android, verify that the selected SD card remains mounted and readable.
  • For a Garmin watch, test playback on the watch itself before leaving the phone behind.
  • Reconnect the device to Spotify at least once every 30 days.

Which download method should you choose?

Your situation Best choice Reason
You need one song for a trip One-track playlist It follows Spotify’s supported playlist-download flow and avoids downloading an entire album.
You want every song from the release Album download It keeps the soundtrack together and requires no manual track selection.
You are curating songs from several soundtracks Custom playlist One download action covers the selected tracks.
Your phone has little free space Download only the necessary playlist and consider supported Android SD storage Fewer tracks reduce local storage use; SD support depends on the device and card.
You want music without carrying a phone Compatible Garmin watch Spotify supports offline music on supported Garmin models for Premium users.
You are on a limited cellular plan Wi-Fi download Spotify uses Wi-Fi by default, avoiding an accidental mobile-data transfer.

For the narrow question “Can I download one soundtrack song?”, the answer is yes with Premium: put the song in a playlist, download that playlist, verify the indicator, and test it in Offline mode before you leave the internet.
