If you may leave Facebook, download anything you need first. Facebook’s built-in Download your information tool can export all available categories or only selected categories and date ranges. After saving your archive, choose between reversible deactivation and permanent account deletion in Settings → Accounts Center → Personal details → Account ownership and control → Deactivation or deletion. Read the timing, linked-login, Messenger and Meta Quest consequences before confirming.
Decide what you need before changing the account
There are three separate actions: preserving a copy of your information, temporarily hiding the account, and requesting permanent deletion. Downloading an archive does not change your account. Deactivation hides the profile while keeping the account’s content stored. Deletion starts a process that becomes irreversible after Meta’s cancellation period.
- Download first if you want photos, posts, videos, messages or other account information for your records.
- Deactivate if you want a reversible break and may return.
- Delete if you intend to leave Facebook permanently and have checked every service that uses Facebook Login.
Meta warns that content added to an account cannot be retrieved after deletion. Save the archive somewhere you control before submitting a deletion request. You can use your computer, a phone or another secure storage location; the Facebook controls themselves do not require a paid deletion service.

Meta’s information tool can export every available category at once or let you choose individual categories and a date range. The controls may appear in Accounts Center or in Facebook’s own settings. Meta says some information controls are not available in Accounts Center for every account, so use the Facebook-settings fallback if you cannot find the option there.

Open Download your information
- Sign in to the Facebook account or profile whose information you want to preserve.
- Open your profile menu and choose Settings and privacy, then Settings.
- Open Accounts Center. Look under the information and permissions controls for Download your information.
- If Accounts Center does not show that control, return to Facebook’s settings and look for the corresponding information or data-download page there. Menu names can differ between the desktop site, mobile app, region and account rollout.
Accounts Center manages settings for connected Meta accounts and products, but its available features vary by account and region. For example, Meta notes that regional availability can affect which connected experiences appear. A missing Accounts Center item does not by itself mean that your information cannot be downloaded.
Choose the account, categories and period
- Review the account or profile selected at the top of the download screen. Change it if you manage more than one profile or connected account.
- Choose whether to download all available information or select particular categories. Selecting categories creates a smaller, more focused archive; selecting everything is appropriate when you are preparing to close the account and do not want to overlook a type of data.
- Set the date range. Use the full available range for a complete personal archive, or a narrower range when you need only recent activity or a specific event.
- Review the selections before submitting the request. Check the profile, categories and dates rather than assuming the last choices you used are still active.
- Submit the download request and follow Facebook’s on-screen instructions to obtain the prepared archive.
The cited Help Center guidance establishes category and date-range selection, but it does not specify a universal export format, preparation time, maximum archive size, media-quality setting or link-expiration period. Those details can vary, so rely on the options and notices shown for your account instead of an unofficial time or size estimate.

Check the archive before you leave
- Open the downloaded files and confirm that the expected categories are present.
- Open several photos, videos and documents rather than checking only filenames.
- Confirm that the date range covers the material you intended to save.
- Keep a second copy in a secure location if the archive contains irreplaceable memories or personal records.
- Do not delete the account until the copy you need is readable and stored somewhere you can access without Facebook.
Downloading is a preservation step, not a deletion request. You can make an archive and continue using Facebook, deactivate afterward, or proceed to deletion once you have checked the files. If you select only a few categories or a short date range, repeat the process for any missing period before closing the account.
Deactivation or deletion: which choice fits?
Meta describes deactivation as a temporary, reversible break and deletion as the permanent option. The table separates the consequences that matter when choosing.

Deactivation is therefore appropriate when you want privacy from ordinary profile visitors without discarding your stored content. Deletion is appropriate only after you have preserved what you need and checked dependencies outside Facebook. Some information, especially messages sent to other people, can remain visible even when your profile is deactivated or your account is deleted because copies are held in other people’s conversations.

How to permanently delete your Facebook account
The current documented route uses Accounts Center. Facebook may label menus differently in the app, desktop site or a regional rollout, so use the account/profile selector shown on your screen and do not confirm until it identifies the account you intend to remove.
Accounts Center route
- Open Facebook’s profile menu.
- Choose Settings and privacy, then Settings.
- Open Accounts Center.
- Under account settings, choose Personal details.
- Choose Account ownership and control.
- Open Deactivation or deletion.
- Select the account or profile you want to change. If several appear, inspect the name or profile image carefully.
- Choose Delete account, select Continue, and complete the confirmation prompts.
Accounts Center can connect settings across Meta products. Deleting the selected account can therefore affect more than the profile you were viewing. Check the selection and any warning screen for connected profiles before the final confirmation.
Facebook-settings fallback
If the Accounts Center route is unavailable or does not display deletion, use Facebook’s own information settings:
- Open Settings and privacy → Settings.
- Choose Your Facebook information.
- Open Deactivation and deletion.
- Select Delete account, choose Continue, and follow the remaining prompts.
Do not treat a missing menu as evidence that deletion has already happened. It usually means the control is in a different settings area, the interface has changed, or the feature is being presented through another account-management screen.

What happens after you submit deletion?
The cancellation window
Meta says you can generally cancel a deletion request by logging back in within 30 days of starting it. The length of this cancellation period can vary by region, so treat 30 days as Meta’s general guidance rather than a guarantee for every account. Logging in during the applicable window is the action Meta identifies for cancelling the request; follow any confirmation shown after you sign in.
Removal from the service
After the applicable cancellation period ends, Meta says the account and information are permanently deleted and cannot be retrieved. Meta also says removing everything you posted can take up to 90 days from the start of deletion. During that process, the information is not accessible to other Facebook users.
Backups and legally retained information
User-facing removal does not mean every technical copy disappears at the same moment. Meta says copies can remain in backup storage beyond the 90-day removal period while they are used for disaster recovery, software error or other data-loss protection. It also says information may be retained for legal issues, terms violations or harm prevention. These retained copies are not a way to recover your account, and the stated periods are Meta’s operational timeframes rather than an independent statistical guarantee.
Services and information that deletion can affect
Messages already sent
Deleting your account does not necessarily erase messages from other people’s inboxes. A message you sent can remain in a recipient’s conversation because it is stored as part of that conversation, not only in your account. If a particular message must be removed from someone else’s copy, account deletion alone is not a reliable method.
Third-party apps that use Facebook Login
List every website or app where you chose Continue with Facebook before deleting. Once the Facebook account is gone, that login can stop authenticating you. Sign in to each service now and add an email address, password, passkey or another supported login method. If you are already locked out after deletion, the service—not Facebook—must provide the account-recovery route.
Meta Quest purchases and credits
If Facebook was the login for Meta Quest, deletion removes associated Quest information, including app purchases and achievements. Meta warns that store credits or app-return options can also be lost. Review your Quest library, receipts and remaining credit before confirming; download or record anything you need independently of the Facebook account.

Other profiles under the same account
The deletion screen may list more than one profile. Read the selector and warning text carefully because an account-level action can affect connected profiles. If you only want to stop using one profile, do not assume the account-wide delete option is equivalent to removing that single profile.
How to cancel a deletion request
- Log back in to the Facebook account during the cancellation period that applies in your region, generally within 30 days of requesting deletion.
- Look for Facebook’s cancellation or keep-account option and confirm that you want to stop deletion.
- After access returns, verify that the profile and required information are available before signing out.
If the cancellation period has ended, Meta says the account and information cannot be retrieved. An archive downloaded before deletion is then the only copy you control; once deletion is complete, the documented process does not provide reactivation or retrieval.
Troubleshooting missing settings and account-selection problems
The download option is not in Accounts Center
- Return to Facebook’s main Settings page and look for the information or activity-download control.
- Check that you are signed in to the intended account, not only a linked Meta profile.
- Try the desktop site if the mobile app does not show the same controls, or vice versa.
- Expect labels and placement to vary by region, app version and rollout; use the closest documented information-control page rather than a third-party downloader.
The deletion option is missing
- Use the Accounts Center path through Personal details → Account ownership and control → Deactivation or deletion.
- If it is absent, use Your Facebook information → Deactivation and deletion in Facebook settings.
- Review the selected account or profile at every screen. A control can appear only after choosing the specific profile.
- Do not install software that claims to delete the account for you. The official settings are the supported route.

Can I cancel Facebook deletion after I request it?
Generally, log back in within 30 days to cancel, although Meta says the period can vary by region. Follow the cancellation option shown after signing in. Once the applicable period ends and deletion completes, Meta says the account and its information cannot be retrieved.
Are my old Facebook messages deleted with my account?
Not necessarily. Messages you already sent can remain in recipients’ inboxes because copies are part of their conversations, not stored only in your account. Deleting your account is therefore not a dependable way to remove a message from another person’s copy.
What happens to apps where I used Continue with Facebook?
Deletion can stop Facebook Login from authenticating you. Before deleting, sign in to each connected service and add another supported method, such as an email address, password or passkey. If deletion has already locked you out, that service must handle account recovery.
