To download one website’s files from a hosting account that contains multiple sites, connect over SSH, archive the target site’s directory on the server, then retrieve that archive with scp. This creates a files archive—not necessarily a complete backup. If the site uses a database, export and download that separately.
Check whether this method fits your site and account
- Storage: Make sure the hosting account has enough free space to create an archive at least as large as the target site’s
public_htmlfolder. The archive temporarily occupies space on the hosting account. - SSH access: Confirm SSH access and your connection details in your own account before starting.
- Site type: This procedure does not apply to sites created with an AI website builder.
- Scope: The steps below archive website files. A database-backed site, including WordPress, needs a separate database export if you want to preserve its content and settings.
Locate the exact website folder
Connect to the hosting account using its SSH connection details. Once connected, inspect the current location and list its contents before changing directories:
pwd

lsSelect the folder matching the site you intend to download. Do not assume every account uses identical folder names or paths. If the listing is unclear, verify the site’s document root in the hosting control panel rather than guessing; archiving the wrong folder can leave you with another site’s files.

Create an archive on the server
From the appropriate location, use either TAR/GZIP or ZIP to package the selected site folder. Replace folder-name with the actual folder name and use paths that match your current directory:
tar -czvf folder-name.tar.gz folder-name
zip -r folder-name.zip folder-name/These are alternative formats; run the command for the format you want. The examples use sample folder names, not fixed paths. Archiving can take a few minutes depending on the site’s size. When the command finishes, check that the archive exists and note its full path before downloading it:

ls -lh folder-name.tar.gzFor a ZIP archive, substitute its actual filename in the check. Confirm the displayed file is the archive you just created, not an older file with a similar name.

Export the database separately when needed
A files archive does not by itself preserve a WordPress database. To identify the database configured for a WordPress site, change to that site’s directory and run:

wp config get DB_NAMEExport the named database to an SQL file using the documented database-over-SSH procedure for your hosting account. You may compress the SQL export as a separate step, but keep track of its filename and location independently from the website-files archive. If you are not using WordPress, use the appropriate database export method for your application; the WordPress command above is not a universal database tool.
Download the archive with SCP
Open a terminal on your local computer, or disconnect from the remote SSH session and open a local terminal. Adapt this pattern with your own connection and file details:

scp username@hostname:/path/to/remote/file /path/to/local/fileReplace each value with the SSH username, hostname, remote archive path, and local destination that apply to your account. If your SSH service requires a non-default port, specify it with uppercase -P, for example:
scp -P 65002 username@hostname:/path/to/remote/file /path/to/local/filePort 65002 is an example, not a universal setting. Use the port shown in your own connection details. If you exported a database file, download that file separately using its own remote path.

Verify the download, then remove only the temporary archive
Check the local destination and confirm the downloaded archive has a plausible filename and size. If practical, test that the archive can be listed or opened before deleting the server copy. For example, use tar -tzf archive-name.tar.gz for a TAR/GZIP archive or unzip -l archive-name.zip for a ZIP archive, replacing the sample name with the actual local filename.
After confirming the local copy, you can remove the generated server-side archive to reclaim hosting storage. First verify the remote path and filename, then remove only that known file, for example:
rm /exact/path/to/folder-name.tar.gzUse the actual archive path and name. Do not run rm without a filename, use broad wildcards, or guess at a path; those choices can delete files you did not intend to remove. Keep any database export until you have separately verified and decided whether to remove it.

Your hosting control panel may also offer downloads of available file or database backups. Select an available backup and choose the file or database data you need. The dates and backup options shown depend on the account, so this route exposes what is available there; it does not guarantee every historical date. Backup downloads may be unavailable for sites created with an AI website builder.

These routes serve different purposes: SSH lets you package a chosen site folder, while the control panel lets you download backups available to the account. The available information does not establish that either route always provides a newer or more complete backup.
