If your laptop runs Windows 10 or Windows 11, you cannot currently download Netflix movies or shows for offline viewing. The current Netflix Windows app supports streaming, but Netflix removed its download feature. Netflix.com in Chrome, Edge, and Firefox does not provide a supported download option either.
For official offline viewing, use the Netflix app on a supported mobile device or on a Chromebook with the Google Play Store. You can still install Netflix on a Windows laptop for streaming.
Can you download Netflix movies on a laptop?
It depends on the type of laptop:

Netflix lists Android phones and tablets, iPhone and iPad, Amazon Fire tablets, and compatible Chromebooks as devices that support downloads. Windows computers and Windows tablets are not on that list. See Netflix’s official download instructions.

Although downloads are unavailable, the Netflix app can still be used to stream on Windows 10 and Windows 11.

- Open Start.
- Select Microsoft Store or Store.
- Select Search, type Netflix, and press Enter.
- Select the official Netflix app.
- Select Install. Depending on the Microsoft Store version, the button may say Get.
- Open Netflix from the Start menu.
- Select Sign In and enter your Netflix email address and password.
Netflix requires Microsoft Edge to be installed for its Windows app. Installing or updating this app will not restore offline downloads. Netflix says the current Windows app replaced the older version and there is no supported way to return to that version.
Why the Download button is missing on Windows
The missing button is not usually caused by a Windows setting, an account problem, or a damaged installation. Netflix changed the Windows app so that it supports streaming features such as browsing, search, subtitles, alternate audio, live events, higher streaming quality, and—in compatible setups—4K and HDR, but not offline downloads.

Netflix identifies this error as a consequence of the Windows app no longer supporting downloads. Reinstalling the app, updating Windows, or switching between Edge and Chrome will not enable the feature.
How to download Netflix movies on a Chromebook
A Chromebook can download Netflix titles if it has access to the Google Play Store. This is different from using Netflix in the Chrome browser: the Android Netflix app is required.
- Open the Chromebook’s Launcher.
- Open the Google Play Store.
- Search for Netflix.
- Install the official Netflix app.
- Open Netflix and sign in.
- Select Downloads.
- Select Find More to Download.
- Choose a movie and select Download.
- For a show, select the download icon beside an episode or select Download Season when available.
Use Wi-Fi where possible. Downloaded titles are stored for viewing inside the Netflix app rather than as ordinary video files that you can copy to another computer.
The official way to download Netflix movies on another device
If your laptop does not support downloads, use the Netflix app on an Android phone or tablet, iPhone, iPad, Amazon Fire tablet, or compatible Chromebook.

- Select Downloads.
- Select See What You Can Download.
- Open a movie and select Download.
- For a TV show, select the download icon next to an episode or select Download Season.
You must remain signed in to access downloads offline. Downloads are tied to the device on which they were created and are watched from the Netflix app. They are not transferable movie files for moving onto a Windows laptop.
What to do if a title has no Download button
Even on a supported device, Netflix does not make every title downloadable. A title may be unavailable for download because of licensing arrangements, download rights held by another company, content-provider restrictions, or regional and seasonal availability. Some studios permit streaming but do not permit downloads.
Therefore, a missing button on a phone, tablet, or Chromebook does not necessarily mean the app is broken. Try another title from the See What You Can Download section.
Common download problems
Downloads disappeared
Netflix deletes downloads when its app is uninstalled, reset, or cleared of app data. Avoid using Clear data or uninstalling Netflix if you need to preserve existing downloads on a supported device.

The download expired
Netflix downloads expire after a specified period. Some titles also limit the number of times they can be downloaded within a year. Reconnect to the internet and check whether the title can be downloaded again.
You were signed out
Netflix requires you to stay signed in to view downloaded titles offline. Sign back in while online before traveling or going somewhere without an internet connection.
The membership was canceled
Canceling a Netflix membership removes downloads from the device. If you restart the membership, download the titles again.
You reached the plan’s download limit
Netflix currently allows up to 100 active downloads per device on ad-free plans, depending on the plan’s device allowance. Ad-supported plans allow 15 total downloads per device per calendar month. These limits apply only to supported download devices—not Windows laptops, where downloads are unavailable.

Methods that do not provide a supported solution
- Netflix in Chrome, Edge, or Firefox: These browsers support streaming but not Netflix offline downloads.
- Installing an old Windows Netflix app: Netflix says there is no supported way to return to the former app version.
- Downloading an archived app package: Unofficial packages can fail authentication, playback, updating, or licensing checks and may create security risks.
- Copying Netflix’s app files: Netflix downloads are app-based, protected, device-bound, and subject to expiration. They are not supported as transferable video files.
- Screen-recording a movie: This does not create an official Netflix download and may violate Netflix’s terms or copyright law.
FAQ
Can I download Netflix movies to a Windows 11 laptop?
No. The current Netflix Windows app does not support offline downloads, and Netflix.com does not offer browser-based downloads on Windows.
Can I download Netflix movies to a Windows 10 laptop?
No. Netflix’s current Windows app behavior applies to Windows 10 and Windows 11. You can stream, but you cannot download titles for offline viewing.
Can I download Netflix movies to a MacBook?
Netflix does not provide a supported offline-download feature for macOS browsers. MacBooks can stream Netflix through a supported browser.
Can I download Netflix movies to a Chromebook?
Yes, if the Chromebook supports the Google Play Store. Install the Netflix Android app, sign in, and use the app’s Downloads section.
Why did Netflix remove downloads from my laptop?
Netflix replaced the former Windows app behavior with a new Windows app that supports streaming but no longer supports offline downloads. Netflix says users cannot officially revert to the old version.
Are Netflix downloads saved as MP4 files?
No. Official downloads are stored for use inside the Netflix app on the device where they were downloaded. They cannot be copied as ordinary movie files to a laptop or USB drive.
