Download the music in a compatible app on your Android phone before you drive, then open that signed-in app through Android Auto. Android Auto is the in-car playback interface; it does not download tracks itself. Offline access depends on the music service, your plan, and whether the app has finished saving the albums or playlists. Google notes that some media apps require a subscription or premium account.
The safest workflow is to save music over Wi-Fi, confirm the app marks it as downloaded, connect the phone to Android Auto, and test playback before leaving coverage. The exact offline menus differ by service.
What you need before downloading
Prepare the phone and account first. Android Auto can show compatible media apps, but the app must be installed, signed in, and eligible for offline playback on your account.
- An Android phone with the music app installed. Use a service that supports Android Auto and offers downloads for your account.
- A signed-in account. Google’s Android Auto guide says to sign in to the app on the phone before starting Android Auto.

Download music in the phone app
- Choose the content. Open the music app on the phone and select an album, playlist, or other content the service allows you to save.
- Start the download before driving. Use the app’s download control while connected to Wi-Fi if possible. Leave the app enough time to finish.
- Confirm completion. Look for the app’s downloaded indicator or offline section. A download that is still queued or partially complete may not be available when reception disappears.
- Enable any required offline setting. Some services have a separate offline mode. Spotify, for example, requires Offline listening to be switched on when using its Offline Backup feature.
- Test without relying on cellular service. Before you leave, use the app’s offline view or temporarily test with connectivity unavailable while parked. Make sure at least one saved album or playlist starts and advances.
- Connect to Android Auto only after the library is ready. Start Android Auto, open the media app from the car display, and select the saved content. You can also use a voice command supported by the app.
Do not start a new download while driving. Select music that is already saved, and operate the display only when parked or through safe voice controls.
Service-by-service instructions
Spotify
Spotify says Premium users can download music for offline listening. Its Offline Backup feature is described for Premium on mobile phones, Android Auto, and CarPlay. When the device is offline, Offline Backup can appear in Spotify Home on Android Auto.
- On the phone, sign in to your Premium Spotify account.
- Open an album or playlist and use Spotify’s download control.
- Wait until the app shows the content as downloaded.
- Open Spotify’s settings and switch on Offline listening if you intend to use Offline Backup.
- While parked, connect the phone to Android Auto and open Spotify on the car display.
- If the phone loses reception, open the saved collection or Offline Backup area shown by Spotify and start playback.
Spotify’s documentation specifically explains the Android Auto Offline Backup experience. It does not mean every Spotify screen is identical on every vehicle or app version, so use the current labels shown on your phone and car display.

YouTube Music
Google’s YouTube Music Help says the Android app can download an album or playlist for offline playback. It also describes automatic downloads based on your listening history. The cited help does not provide an Android Auto-specific walkthrough for browsing those downloads, so do not assume a particular offline menu will appear in the car.
- Sign in to YouTube Music on the phone.
- Open the album or playlist you want available without a connection.
- Tap the app’s download control and wait for completion.
- If you use automatic downloads, review the app’s settings and confirm that the automatically selected music is actually saved.
- Connect the phone to Android Auto while parked and open YouTube Music from the media-app list.
- Start the downloaded album or playlist. If the car interface does not expose a separate offline category, begin playback from the app’s saved content on the phone before driving, then use the car controls.
The last step describes a fallback approach rather than a guaranteed menu path. Google’s general Android Auto guidance covers media playback, while YouTube Music controls the download and offline-library details.
Amazon Music
Amazon Music Help says eligible subscribers can download songs, albums, and playlists for offline playback. The help page consulted is UK-specific, so eligibility and plan names may differ in other countries. Google’s Android Auto guide uses Amazon Music in a voice-command example.

Use Android Auto once music is saved
- Finish setup while parked. Connect the phone to the car and wait for Android Auto to load.
- Open the media app. Select the app from the Android Auto launcher or media controls.
- Choose saved content. Use the app’s downloaded, offline, or saved area if it provides one. Otherwise select the album or playlist you already verified on the phone.

What to do when reception disappears
Loss of mobile data does not automatically prove that a track is saved. In the media app, switch to the downloaded or offline collection and select an item you verified earlier. Spotify’s documented Offline Backup can surface in Spotify Home on Android Auto when the device is offline, provided Offline listening is enabled.
For YouTube Music and Amazon Music, the cited help confirms downloads but does not promise a particular Android Auto offline-navigation screen. If the car display does not show the collection, stop in a safe place and check the app on the phone. Do not browse or troubleshoot a moving vehicle.
