Netflix downloads work through the Netflix app—not through Netflix.com in a desktop browser. You can save eligible movies and shows on an Android phone or tablet, iPhone or iPad, Amazon Fire tablet, or a compatible Chromebook with Google Play Store installed. The Windows Netflix app currently does not support downloads.
Before starting, install the latest Netflix app, sign in, and connect to Wi‑Fi. Downloads use device storage and remain on the device where you saved them.
Devices that support Netflix downloads

Older operating-system versions may not support downloads. If an Android device meets the basic requirements but still has no download option, Netflix may consider the device incompatible.

How to find downloadable movies and shows
Not every Netflix title can be saved for offline viewing. In the Netflix app, look for the Download icon next to a movie or episode.

You can also browse titles that Netflix currently allows you to download:
- Android, iPhone, iPad, and Fire tablet: Open Downloads > See What You Can Download.
- Chromebook: Open Downloads > Find More to Download.
A missing Download icon means that title is not currently available for offline viewing. Licensing is the usual reason. Netflix may have streaming rights but not download rights, or another company may control exclusive rights. This can also happen with Netflix Originals, so being labeled a Netflix Original does not guarantee a download option.
Download a movie from Netflix
- Open the Netflix app and sign in.
- Find and open the movie you want to save.
- Select Download.
- Wait until the download finishes before disconnecting from the internet.
The title then appears in the app’s Downloads section. Netflix recommends using Wi‑Fi because video downloads can consume a substantial amount of cellular data.
Download TV episodes or a whole season
- Open Netflix and select the TV show.
- Find the episode you want.
- Tap the Download button beside the episode.
To save all available episodes in a season, select Download Season when that option is shown. The button may not appear for every episode or every series because download availability depends on licensing.
Watch Netflix downloads without an internet connection
- Open the Netflix app on the device that contains the download.
- Select Downloads.
- Choose the movie or episode.
- Select Play.
You must remain signed in to your Netflix account. Offline viewing does not work after signing out, even if the video is already stored on the device.
Downloads are tied to the device used to save them. They do not automatically transfer to another phone, tablet, Chromebook, or computer. Any Netflix profile on that device may be able to view the downloads, subject to profile restrictions. Downloads made from a Kids profile can also be unavailable for offline playback if their maturity ratings are too high for that profile.
How long Netflix downloads last
Downloads are temporary licenses, not permanent copies. Movies and episodes expire after a period set by Netflix’s licensing agreements. A title can usually be watched repeatedly before it expires, but some titles limit the number of downloads or renewals allowed within a year.

If Netflix has removed a title from its service, you may not be able to renew or download it again. An expired title may also require an internet connection to renew its license.
Renew an expired download on Android or Fire tablet
- Open Downloads.
- Open the expired movie or episode.
- Tap the download-status icon.
- Select Delete Download.
- Return to the title and download it again.
Renew an expired download on iPhone or iPad
- Open Downloads.
- Tap the download-status icon beside the title.
- Select Delete Download.
- Download the title again.
If an iPhone or iPad download expires unexpectedly, check Settings > General > Date & Time and enable Set Automatically. An incorrect device clock can interfere with expiration checks.
Change Netflix download quality
Higher quality uses more storage. Standard quality uses less space and downloads in SD; High or Higher quality uses more space and can support up to 1080p/HD when both the title and device support HD.
On Android, iPhone, or iPad:
- Open My Netflix.
- Tap your profile name.
- Open App Settings.
- Select Download Video Quality or Video Quality.
- Choose Standard or High/Higher.
The quality setting cannot be changed on Android or Fire devices that do not support HD playback. Some titles also have no HD download available, even when the device itself supports HD.

Android phones and Amazon Fire tablets that support external storage can use an SD card for future downloads.
- Open My Netflix.
- Tap your profile name.
- Open App Settings.
- Select Download Location.
- Choose the SD card or another available storage location.
This does not move downloads that already exist. Existing files remain in their original location; only future downloads use the new location.
Fix Netflix error OF.NA.5
Error OF.NA.5—“The download feature is not supported on this device because external storage was not found”—usually indicates that Netflix cannot read the inserted SD card.

- Open Settings > Storage & USB > Eject.
- Power off the device.
- Remove and reinsert the SD card.
- Restart the device and try the download again.
- If it still fails, test another SD card.
If Netflix continues to reject external storage, switch the download location to internal storage.

Netflix limits the number of downloads according to the plan and device. Netflix’s current download guidance states:
- Ad-free plans: Up to 100 active downloads at a time per device, subject to the number of devices included in the plan.
- Ad-supported plans: Up to 15 total downloads per device per calendar month.
Ad-supported plans also do not include Smart Downloads, Download Next Episode, or Downloads for You.
Use Netflix Smart Downloads
Automatically download the next episode
On eligible ad-free plans, Netflix can delete a watched downloaded episode and fetch the next one over Wi‑Fi:
- Open My Netflix.
- Tap your profile name.
- Open App Settings > Smart Downloads.
- Turn on Download Next Episode.
The final episode of a series is not automatically deleted. This feature is unavailable on ad-supported plans.

Downloads for You saves recommended movies and shows automatically on supported Android phones and tablets, iPhone, and iPad.
- Open My Netflix.
- Tap your profile name.
- Go to App Settings > Smart Downloads.
- Turn on Downloads for You.
- Use the plus and minus controls to set the storage amount for the profile.
This feature requires Wi‑Fi and available storage. It is not offered with ad-supported plans.

Delete Netflix downloads
Delete one movie or episode
On Android, iPhone, or iPad:
- Open Downloads.
- Tap the download-status icon beside the movie or episode.
- Select Delete Download.
For an individual TV episode, open the show first, then select the episode’s download-status icon.
Delete every download on the device
- Open My Netflix.
- Tap your profile name.
- Open App Settings.
- Select Delete All Downloads.
- Confirm with Delete.
Delete downloads from another device remotely
If you no longer have access to the device, open Netflix’s Manage download devices page in a browser and select Remove device. In the mobile app, use My Netflix > profile name > Account > Mobile download devices > Remove device. Removing the device deletes all Netflix downloads stored on it.
What to do when Netflix downloads do not work
Android
Update both Android and the Netflix app. On devices running Android 10 or earlier, check storage permission at Settings > Apps or Apps Manager > Netflix > Permissions > Storage > On.
As a last resort, open App info > Storage & cache > Clear storage > OK. This removes every Netflix download from the device and signs you out.
iPhone or iPad
Check that there is enough free storage, update Netflix, and verify that Settings > General > Date & Time > Set Automatically is enabled. Removing the Netflix app also deletes saved downloads and signs you out. To reinstall, use Remove app > Delete app > Delete, then install Netflix again from the App Store.
Amazon Fire tablet
Netflix requires Fire OS 7 or later for downloads. Check the version at Settings > Device Options > System Updates. Update the tablet and Netflix app before troubleshooting storage or account issues.

There is no Windows workaround inside the Netflix app because downloads are currently unavailable there. Use the Netflix app on a supported Android device, iPhone, iPad, Fire tablet, or compatible Chromebook instead. Downloading from Netflix.com in a browser is not supported.

FAQ
Can I download Netflix movies to my Windows laptop?
No. The current Netflix app for Windows does not provide downloads, and Netflix.com in a browser cannot be used to save movies for offline viewing. Use a supported Android phone or tablet, iPhone or iPad, Fire tablet, or compatible Chromebook.
Why does a Netflix movie not have a Download button?
That title is not currently available for download. Netflix may have streaming rights without download rights, or another company may control exclusive rights. Availability can also vary by location and over time.
Can I watch Netflix downloads after signing out?
No. You must remain signed in to the Netflix account that downloaded the title.
Do Netflix downloads transfer to a new phone?
No. Downloads remain on the device used to save them. You must download the title again on the new device.
Can I move existing Netflix downloads to an SD card?
No. Changing the Download Location affects future downloads only. Existing downloads stay in their original storage location.
Can every Netflix Original be downloaded?
No. Netflix Originals can lack download rights when a partner studio controls related rights or Netflix has streaming rights but not offline-download rights.
