HyperTerminal is not built into Windows 10 or Windows 11. Microsoft removed it beginning with Windows Vista, so you will not find it in Windows Features, Settings, or as a Microsoft Store component.
To use the original HyperTerminal-style workflow today, install HyperTerminal Private Edition from its developer, Hilgraeve. It is commercial software, so check the current license and trial information on Hilgraeve’s product page before downloading. Avoid unofficial “free HyperTerminal” ZIP files and repackaged installers.
What you can—and cannot—install
| Option | Status on Windows 10/11 | Recommendation |
|---|---|---|
| Original Windows HyperTerminal | Removed from Windows Vista onward | Not available as a Windows component |
| HyperTerminal Private Edition | Standalone commercial software from Hilgraeve | Use the developer’s current installer and license terms |
| Copying Windows XP files | Unsupported legacy workaround | Do not treat it as an official installation method |
| Windows Terminal | Included or available for Windows command-line work | Useful for PowerShell, Command Prompt, WSL, and SSH—not a direct serial-port replacement |
Before you download HyperTerminal
- Decide whether you need a serial connection, a modem connection, or a TCP/IP session. Installing the program alone does not provide a modem, phone line, serial adapter, remote host, or network service.
- If you need a USB-to-serial connection, connect the adapter first and check whether Windows detects it.
- Close PuTTY, Tera Term, RealTerm, modem utilities, and other applications that might already have the COM port open.
- Check whether Windows is running in S mode. S mode blocks applications installed outside the Microsoft Store.
Download HyperTerminal Private Edition
The original HyperTerminal was developed by Hilgraeve. Its current standalone product is HyperTerminal Private Edition. Download it only from Hilgraeve’s official website or a distribution link that clearly identifies Hilgraeve as the publisher.
Do not rely on a search result promising a “free official HyperTerminal for Windows 11.” Microsoft does not provide a current HyperTerminal download, Store package, or optional Windows feature. Unofficial ZIP archives and modified installers may contain unwanted software and are not supported by Microsoft or Hilgraeve.

Install HyperTerminal on Windows 11 or Windows 10
- Download the current HyperTerminal Private Edition installer from Hilgraeve.
- Open the downloaded installer. If User Account Control asks whether to allow the app to make changes, select Yes only after checking the publisher and download source.
- Follow the setup wizard. Typical buttons are Next, Back, Cancel, and Install.
- Accept the license terms when prompted.
- Choose the installation folder, or keep the default folder unless your organization requires another location.
- Allow the wizard to create a Start-menu shortcut if you want one.
- Select Install and wait for setup to finish.
- Open Start, search for HyperTerminal, and select the installed application.
If Microsoft Defender SmartScreen appears, do not automatically bypass it. First confirm that the installer came from Hilgraeve and that Windows identifies the expected publisher. Only then use More info and Run anyway, if you have independently verified the file.
Install or check a USB-to-serial adapter
HyperTerminal cannot use a serial connection unless Windows has a working serial device. Common USB-to-serial chipsets include FTDI, Prolific, Silicon Labs CP210x, and WCH CH340. The correct driver depends on the adapter’s chipset and manufacturer.
- Right-click Start.
- Select Device Manager.
- Expand Ports (COM & LPT).
- Find the adapter and note its assigned port, such as
USB Serial Port (COM3)orProlific USB-to-Serial Comm Port (COM5).
Use that COM number when creating the HyperTerminal connection. If Ports (COM & LPT) is missing, or the adapter appears with a warning icon, the usual cause is a missing, incorrect, or incompatible driver. Install the driver supplied by the adapter manufacturer or chipset vendor, then reconnect the device and check Device Manager again.
Create a serial connection
The exact device settings depend on the equipment you are connecting to. Use the values in the device’s service manual rather than guessing. Common serial settings include:
- Baud rate: 9,600 or 115,200
- Data bits: 8
- Parity: None
- Stop bits: 1
- Flow control: None
These values are often written as 9600 8-N-1 or 115200 8-N-1, but they are not universal. A router, switch, industrial controller, console server, or embedded board may require different baud, parity, or flow-control settings.

- Start HyperTerminal and create a new connection when prompted.
- Choose the appropriate COM port, such as
COM3. - Enter the required baud rate, data bits, parity, stop bits, and flow control.
- Open the session and press Enter if the remote device does not immediately display a prompt.
A COM port can be unavailable if another program has opened it. Close all other serial utilities and try again. If the terminal opens but displays unreadable characters, the connection settings—especially baud rate, parity, data bits, or flow control—are probably wrong.
Use HyperTerminal with a modem
Installing HyperTerminal does not create a modem session by itself. You need a detected modem and either a working telephone line or a compatible modem emulator. Check the modem in Device Manager and confirm that the hardware supports the type of connection you intend to make.
Older modem instructions may refer to telephone services or commands that are no longer available. If the modem is not detected, HyperTerminal cannot repair a missing driver, unsupported hardware, or unavailable phone service.
Use a TCP/IP connection
For a TCP/IP session, the remote host must be online and listening on the selected port. Connection failures can result from:
- An incorrect hostname or IP address
- The wrong TCP port number
- A firewall blocking the connection
- The remote system requiring SSH, Telnet, or another protocol that the selected session does not support
- The service being stopped or restricted to particular source addresses
Verify the protocol and port with the administrator of the remote system. A successful network connection still does not prove that the remote application is using the terminal settings you selected.
What if the PC is in Windows S mode?
Windows 10 and Windows 11 in S mode allow apps from the Microsoft Store and block conventional installers such as a downloaded HyperTerminal installer. Switching out of S mode is permanent.

Windows 11
- Open Settings.
- Go to System > Activation.
- Under Switch to Windows 11 Pro, select Go to the Store.
- Select Get on the Microsoft Store page.
Confirm that you are allowed to make this permanent change before proceeding, particularly on a managed or school-owned computer.
Why copying HyperTerminal from Windows XP is a poor solution
Some legacy instructions tell users to copy hypertrm.exe and hypertrm.dll from a licensed Windows XP installation. Paths commonly mentioned include C:Program FilesWindows NT and C:WindowsSystem32.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →This is not a Microsoft-supported Windows 10 or Windows 11 installation method. It may create licensing issues, fail on modern 64-bit Windows, or depend on other components that are not present. Do not replace files in protected Windows directories. If an old XP system is still available, preserve it as a controlled legacy environment rather than copying system files into a current Windows installation.
Windows Terminal is not the same program
Windows Terminal hosts Command Prompt, Windows PowerShell, WSL, and other command-line sessions. It is also suitable for SSH when the necessary client and remote service are available. It is not a direct replacement for HyperTerminal’s serial-port workflow.
In Windows 11 version 22H2 and later configurations, command-line applications may open inside Windows Terminal by default. That change does not add HyperTerminal or provide serial-console support.

For a manually downloaded MSIX bundle, the documented PowerShell command is:
Add-AppxPackage Microsoft.WindowsTerminal_<versionNumber>.msixbundle
PowerShell 7+ users may first need:
Import-Module Appx -UseWindowsPowerShell
Manual Windows Terminal installations may require the VC++ v14 Desktop Framework Package on older Windows 10 builds, and manually installed releases do not automatically update.
Windows 10 support status
Microsoft ended Windows 10 support on October 14, 2025. After that date, Microsoft no longer provides free Windows Update software updates, technical assistance, or security fixes for Windows 10. This does not necessarily prevent HyperTerminal Private Edition from running, but it matters when deciding whether to keep a Windows 10 computer connected to a network or use it for sensitive work.

Can Windows Terminal replace HyperTerminal?
Only for some tasks. Windows Terminal is appropriate for Command Prompt, PowerShell, WSL, and SSH. It is not a direct replacement for HyperTerminal’s serial-port workflow.
Can I copy HyperTerminal from Windows XP?
Some users report that copying hypertrm.exe and hypertrm.dll can work in limited cases, but it is unsupported, may have licensing implications, and may fail on modern 64-bit Windows. It is not an official installation method.
The Bottom Line
Windows 10 and Windows 11 do not include the original HyperTerminal. For the familiar application, download the commercial HyperTerminal Private Edition only from Hilgraeve and verify its current license terms. For serial-console work, confirm the adapter driver and COM number first; for PowerShell, Command Prompt, WSL, or SSH, use Windows Terminal instead.
