Google Chrome can be installed on supported Windows 10 and Windows 11 PCs using Google’s standard download page. The normal process does not require Command Prompt, PowerShell, or msiexec: download the installer, open it, approve Windows’ prompts, and let Chrome complete the setup.
Before starting, save any work in your current browser. You will need an internet connection during the standard installation because the downloaded setup file obtains the browser components from Google.
Check whether your Windows PC is supported
Google’s current consumer requirements list Windows 10 and later for PCs using an Intel processor, with an Intel Pentium 4 or later that supports SSE3. ARM processor support begins with Windows 11; Windows 10 on ARM is not listed as supported.
To check your Windows edition and version, right-click the Start button, choose System, and look under Windows specifications. The same page shows whether the PC is running a 64-bit or ARM-based edition under System type.

It is separate from Google’s Chrome support schedule: Google’s current enterprise support table lists Chrome support for Windows 10 as “Not yet scheduled” for deprecation.
Download Chrome for Windows 11 or Windows 10
- Open an existing browser such as Microsoft Edge.
- Go to Google’s official Chrome download page.
- Select the download button for Chrome for Windows.
- Save the installation file when the browser asks where to put it. It will normally appear in the Downloads folder.
Use Google’s site rather than a third-party download page. Avoid downloading a supposed “Chrome update” from an advert, pop-up, or unfamiliar software site.
Install Chrome
- Open File Explorer with
Windows key + E. - Select Downloads in the left-hand navigation pane.
- Double-click the Chrome installation file you downloaded.
- If Windows displays “Do you want to run this file?”, select Run.
- If Windows displays “Do you want to allow this app to make changes to your device?”, select Yes.
- Follow the remaining on-screen instructions. Chrome downloads and installs the browser components.
On Windows 10 and later, Google says a Chrome window opens automatically when installation finishes. The installer file can be deleted afterward if you no longer need it.

From Chrome
- Open Chrome.
- Select the three-dot menu in the upper-right corner.
- Choose Settings.
- Open Default browser.
- Select Make default, then complete any Windows confirmation step.
You can also type chrome://settings/defaultBrowser into Chrome’s address bar to open the relevant settings page directly.
From Windows 11
- Open Settings with
Windows key + I. - Choose Apps, then Default apps.
- Search for Google Chrome and select it.
- Choose Chrome for the web-link and web-document types you want it to handle. Depending on the Windows build, Windows may provide a single option to make Chrome the default.
From Windows 10
- Open Settings.
- Go to Apps, then Default apps.
- Under Web browser, select the current browser.
- Choose Google Chrome.
Do you need the Chrome Enterprise installer?
No, not for a normal personal installation. Google does not provide a separate browser product called an “enterprise version.” Chrome Enterprise supplies management tools and administrative controls; the browser itself is the same Chrome browser.

Businesses that need managed deployment can use the Chrome Enterprise download page. It includes selectable Channel, File type, and Architecture fields, along with stable or beta bundles and MSI options. The download button is labelled Accept and download. Those packages are intended for IT deployment rather than the ordinary home-user installation described above.

What to do if the installation does not start
| What you see | What to check |
|---|---|
| The downloaded file cannot be found | Open File Explorer and check Downloads. You can also use your current browser’s download list to open the file location. |
| Windows asks whether to run the file | Select Run if you downloaded it from Google’s official Chrome page. |
| Windows asks for permission to make changes | Select Yes to allow the Chrome installer to proceed. |
| The download page will not load | Check the internet connection and try again from another working browser tab. A work, school, or family safety policy may also block software downloads. |
| The installer is blocked by an administrator | On a managed PC, contact the administrator rather than trying to bypass the restriction. Use the Enterprise package only when your organization’s IT process calls for it. |
Google’s standard consumer instructions do not require a Command Prompt or PowerShell command. They also do not document a separate command-line recovery procedure as part of the normal installation.
Common Windows 10 Chrome claims that are incorrect

No. Chrome works without becoming the default. You can change the setting later in Chrome under Settings > Default browser or in Windows Default apps.
The Bottom Line
For most Windows 10 and Windows 11 users, the correct route is Google’s regular Chrome download page—not an MSI or Enterprise package. Download the installer, open it, approve the Run and Yes prompts when shown, and follow the setup instructions. Making Chrome the default browser is optional and can be changed later.
