On a Windows 11 laptop, the current official PC route to Grand Theft Auto: Vice City is Grand Theft Auto: The Trilogy – The Definitive Edition. Rockstar sells this package for $59.99; it includes Grand Theft Auto III, Vice City, and San Andreas. Rockstar does not currently provide a verified free standalone PC download of Vice City.
This guide covers the legitimate installation process, laptop requirements, Rockstar Games Launcher setup, and what to do if you already own the game through Steam or another supported installation.
Before downloading: what you are actually getting
Rockstar’s current PC product is the 2021 Grand Theft Auto: The Trilogy – The Definitive Edition, released on November 11, 2021. The official product page uses a Buy Now button rather than offering a free download.

Check your Windows 11 laptop first
Rockstar publishes Windows 10 64-bit as the minimum operating system for the current PC edition. Windows 11 is not the operating system named in the published requirements, so Rockstar does not explicitly list it there as the minimum or recommended platform. Before purchasing, check Rockstar’s current compatibility information and make sure your laptop meets or exceeds the hardware requirements.

To check your laptop’s basic specifications, press Windows + R, type msinfo32, and press Enter. For the graphics adapter, open Settings > System > Display > Advanced display, or run dxdiag from the same Run box.
Integrated graphics and mobile chipsets can be incompatible even when other specifications look adequate. Rockstar also warns that unlisted hardware may not be supported. A laptop with a dedicated NVIDIA or AMD graphics processor is the safer choice.
How to download GTA Vice City on Windows 11
- Open Rockstar’s official product page. Go to Rockstar Games Store and confirm that the product is Grand Theft Auto: The Trilogy – The Definitive Edition.
- Purchase the trilogy. Select Buy Now and complete the purchase using your Rockstar account. The current listed price is $59.99, although prices can change with sales or regional pricing.
- Download the launcher. Use Rockstar’s official launcher page: socialclub.rockstargames.com/rockstar-games-launcher. Download and run the Windows installer.
- Install Rockstar Games Launcher. Allow the installer to add the launcher and its required components. The launcher itself requires Windows 10 64-bit, 2 GB RAM, a DirectX 11-compatible graphics card, and about 1 GB of disk space, in addition to the game’s storage requirement.
- Sign in to the purchasing account. Use the Rockstar Games/Social Club account that owns the trilogy. Internet access is required for activation and periodic entitlement checks.
- Open your library. After signing in, find Grand Theft Auto: The Trilogy – The Definitive Edition in the launcher’s game library and select the install option.
- Choose an installation drive. Select a drive with at least 45 GB free. Leaving additional free space is sensible because Windows, launcher updates, and temporary installation files may need room.
- Install the game. Let the launcher download the trilogy. Vice City is included in the package; it is not downloaded as a separate current Rockstar PC product.
- Launch Vice City. Start the trilogy from Rockstar Games Launcher and choose Grand Theft Auto: Vice City from the available games.
Components installed with the game
The current installation may install or require DirectX, the Microsoft Visual C++ 2015–2019 Redistributable for x64, Chromium Embedded Framework, Rockstar Games Social Club Framework, and authentication software. Do not remove these components if the launcher or game depends on them.
Because activation and entitlement verification require an internet connection, complete the first launch while online. A purchase or serial code is tied to one Rockstar account and cannot be transferred to another account. Rockstar also limits an account to one PC login at a time.
If you already own Vice City through Steam
If you have a supported Steam installation, Rockstar Launcher can detect it rather than downloading another copy. Install and sign in to Rockstar Games Launcher, then use this menu path:

Settings > General > Scan PC for supported installs > Scan Now

- Start Rockstar Games Launcher.
- Open Settings.
- Select General.
- Find Scan PC for supported installs.
- Click Scan Now and allow the scan to finish.
- Open My Library and select the detected game.
A detected Steam installation remains managed by Steam for updates, and Steam must be running when updates are required. Rockstar Launcher changes the action to Play on Steam. If the scan finds a non-Steam installation, it adds it to My Library and displays Play on Disk.
Common problems on Windows 11 laptops
The launcher says the game is not owned
Sign out of Rockstar Games Launcher and sign back in with the account used for the purchase. A game bought on one Social Club account will not appear when you use a different account. Also check that the launcher is online rather than operating in an offline state.
The game will not install because of insufficient space
Check the free space on the drive selected in the launcher, not only the space on the Windows system drive. Free at least 45 GB before starting, and preferably more for temporary files and updates. Windows can show the drive’s free space in File Explorer > This PC.
The launcher cannot find an existing installation
Run Settings > General > Scan PC for supported installs > Scan Now. If it is a Steam copy, open Steam and confirm that Steam recognizes the game. Do not point the launcher at a random folder containing shortcuts; it needs to identify a supported installation.

The game runs poorly or crashes
Compare the laptop’s dedicated GPU, processor, and RAM with Rockstar’s table above. Update the graphics driver from NVIDIA or AMD, connect the laptop to AC power, and select the laptop’s high-performance graphics mode if it has both integrated and dedicated GPUs. A laptop that only has integrated graphics may not meet Rockstar’s compatibility expectations.

Windows 7 instructions do not work
Windows 7 is not listed as supported for the current Definitive Edition. Likewise, old pages mentioning Games for Windows–Live or legacy browser components describe an older product and should not be used as the installation procedure for the current release.
Can you download the original standalone Vice City for free?
There is no verified official free PC download of the standalone game on Rockstar’s current store. The official current option is the paid trilogy. Avoid cracked archives, “pre-installed” repacks, torrents, and download buttons that redirect through several advertising pages. Besides copyright concerns, these packages can include password stealers, ransomware, or altered executables that trigger antivirus warnings.
If you already own a legitimate older PC copy, use its original installer or the store where you purchased it, then check whether Rockstar Games Launcher can detect it using the scan path above. The older game and the Definitive Edition are not the same product and can have different support requirements.

Is GTA Vice City free to download on a Windows 11 laptop?
Rockstar does not currently offer a verified free standalone PC download. The current official PC product is Grand Theft Auto: The Trilogy – The Definitive Edition, which includes Vice City and is listed at $59.99 on Rockstar’s store.

Can I install only Vice City instead of the whole trilogy?
The current official PC listing sells Vice City as part of Grand Theft Auto: The Trilogy – The Definitive Edition. It is not presented as a separate current Rockstar PC download.
How much storage does the game need?
Rockstar lists 45 GB of storage for the Vice City-containing Definitive Edition. Keep additional space free for temporary files, launcher data, and updates.
How do I add an existing Steam copy to Rockstar Launcher?
Open Rockstar Games Launcher and choose Settings > General > Scan PC for supported installs > Scan Now. Detected Steam games appear in My Library with a Play on Steam action, while updates remain managed by Steam.
