If you are searching for a free GTA San Andreas download for Windows 10, the important distinction is between a free game file and a legitimate download included with an entitlement you already have.
There is no verified current permanent free PC giveaway of Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas. Rockstar’s official store currently lists Grand Theft Auto: The Trilogy – The Definitive Edition for $59.99, and that package includes GTA III, Vice City, and San Andreas. The store page shows Buy Now, not a permanent free-download option.
You can still download the game without paying an additional charge if you already own a qualifying copy or have an active subscription entitlement that currently includes it. This guide explains the legitimate Windows 10 methods, the difference between the original and Definitive Edition, and how to fix common launcher errors.
Is GTA San Andreas free on PC Windows 10?
Not as a current, verified, unrestricted Rockstar giveaway. Older articles and videos often refer to a past promotion that allowed users to claim the original game through the Rockstar Games Launcher. Rockstar’s support page for that promotion now concerns the error This feature is not currently available
; it does not announce an active giveaway.

Therefore, avoid websites offering a “free full version,” cracked installer, torrent, or direct EXE download. Besides infringing copyright, these downloads are a common way to distribute malware, password stealers, unwanted launchers, and modified game files.
The legitimate possibilities are:
- You already own the game: download it through the store or launcher connected to the account that owns the license.
- Your subscription currently includes it: install it through the relevant subscription app and complete Rockstar account linking.
- You do not own it: purchase an official copy, such as the current Trilogy product, when it is available in your region.
Choose the correct PC edition
“GTA San Andreas for PC” can refer to two different products. Their hardware requirements are not interchangeable.
| Edition | What it is | Minimum requirements listed by Rockstar |
|---|---|---|
| Original PC version | The legacy release of Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas | Windows 10 64-bit, 1 GHz Intel Pentium or AMD Athlon, 256 MB RAM, 64 MB DirectX 9-compatible graphics, DirectX 9, and 4.7 GB storage |
| Definitive Edition | The remastered version included in The Trilogy – The Definitive Edition | Windows 10 64-bit, Intel Core i5-6600K or AMD FX-6300, 8 GB RAM, GTX 760 2 GB or Radeon R9 280 3 GB, and 45 GB storage |
The original game also requires activation and login, periodic entitlement verification, DirectX, Chromium, Microsoft Visual C++ 2008 SP1 Redistributable, and Rockstar authentication software. The Definitive Edition is much more demanding, so a computer that meets the old 4.7 GB requirement may not run the remastered version well.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Method 1: Download an owned copy with Rockstar Games Launcher
Use this method if your Rockstar account already owns a supported PC copy. Rockstar lists Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas among the titles supported by its launcher.
- Open the official Rockstar Games Launcher page at socialclub.rockstargames.com/rockstar-games-launcher.
- Download and install the launcher. Do not use a third-party installer.
- Start the launcher and sign in to the Rockstar Games account that owns the game.
- Open your library. Find Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas or the eligible Trilogy product.
- Select Install, choose an installation folder with enough free space, and let the launcher finish.
- Launch the game from the library. The first run requires internet access for account sign-in and activation.
Rockstar’s launcher requirements include Windows 10 64-bit, 2 GB RAM, a DirectX 11-supported video card, and 1 GB of disk space for the launcher itself. Those are launcher requirements, not the requirements for the game. Reserve at least 4.7 GB for the original version or 45 GB for the Definitive Edition, plus additional room for Windows and temporary installation files.
Method 2: Install it through a subscription entitlement
Rockstar says PC GTA+ members can access the PC titles currently included in the rotating GTA+ Games Library through the Rockstar Games Launcher. The selection can change, so do not assume that San Andreas is always included. Check the current library shown for your account before subscribing or starting an installation.
If the title is listed as available to your account:
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
- Install or open Rockstar Games Launcher from Rockstar’s official launcher page.
- Sign in with the Rockstar account connected to the subscription.
- Open the GTA+ Games Library or your game library.
- Select the available San Andreas title and choose Install.
- Follow the on-screen activation instructions.
A subscription download is not an account-free copy. Access depends on the subscription and the title’s current availability. If the game leaves the rotating library or the subscription ends, the entitlement may no longer permit you to launch it.
Method 3: Install through the Xbox PC app when included for your account
If the supported Rockstar title is available through your Xbox PC subscription or account, the official flow uses the Xbox app and Rockstar Games Launcher together. The exact catalog can change, so confirm that the game is currently listed before attempting installation.
- Open the Xbox app on Windows.
- Select Game Pass and search for the supported Rockstar title.
- Select the game and click Install, or click Play if it is already installed.
- Install Rockstar Games Launcher if the Xbox app prompts you to do so.
- Sign in to your Rockstar Games account.
- Complete the Link Account step and choose whether to enable cloud saves.
- Return to the Xbox app and start the game.
Rockstar account linking is required for Rockstar titles played through the Xbox app on PC. If you cancel the linking process, return to the Xbox app and select Play again to restart it.

What to do when the old free-offer page shows an error
Some users still see instructions telling them to open the Rockstar Launcher, select Store, and claim a free copy of San Andreas. If the launcher displays This feature is not currently available
, or the Store menu is missing, that does not provide a working route to a current free entitlement.
Rockstar’s support article for this error points users to its Terms of Service and does not document a workaround that restores the old promotion. Updating the launcher, changing a command, or downloading an alleged replacement EXE cannot legitimately create a game license.

Practical checks before installing
- Verify that you are signed in to the account that owns the game or has the subscription entitlement.
- Check whether you are installing the original version or the 45 GB Definitive Edition.
- Use Windows 10 64-bit and install pending Windows updates.
- Allow the launcher through your firewall if it cannot sign in or verify ownership.
- Keep internet access available for activation and periodic entitlement checks.
- Do not enter your Rockstar password into a download site claiming to unlock the game.
- Do not use CMD or PowerShell commands advertised as “activation” steps. Rockstar’s documented installation, activation, Xbox linking, and compatibility procedures use normal graphical controls.
Bottom line on a free download
You cannot currently verify a permanent official free PC download of GTA San Andreas for Windows 10. The safe options are to download a copy you already own, install the title if it is currently included in an eligible subscription library, or buy an official product. The current Rockstar Store product is Grand Theft Auto: The Trilogy – The Definitive Edition, which includes San Andreas but is a different and considerably more demanding PC release than the original game.

Can I download GTA San Andreas free from Rockstar in 2026?
There is no verified current permanent free PC giveaway. Rockstar’s current store listing is a paid Trilogy product, while its support page about the old free offer describes an unavailable feature rather than an active promotion.
Is the original GTA San Andreas still the same as the Definitive Edition?
No. Rockstar lists them as different PC products. The original version has a 4.7 GB storage requirement and 256 MB RAM minimum, while the Definitive Edition requires 45 GB storage and 8 GB RAM minimum.
Can GTA+ members download San Andreas for free?
A GTA+ subscription can provide access to PC titles in Rockstar’s rotating Games Library, but San Andreas is not guaranteed to be included. Check the current library for your account.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsDo I need the Rockstar Games Launcher?
For Rockstar PC installations, activation and entitlement verification require Rockstar account access and the launcher or associated authentication software. Xbox PC installations can also prompt you to install and sign in to Rockstar Games Launcher.

Why does Rockstar Launcher say that only Windows 10 and later are supported?
Rockstar says this commonly occurs when the launcher or game executable is configured for an older Windows compatibility mode. Open its Properties, select Compatibility, clear the compatibility-mode option, and relaunch it.
Can I use a torrent or cracked installer if I cannot find a free official copy?
That is not a safe or legitimate solution. Cracked installers may contain malware and bypass the game’s licensing and activation systems. Use an owned copy, a current subscription entitlement, or an official purchase instead.
The Bottom Line
Bottom line: There is no verified current “free download” of GTA San Andreas for PC Windows 10 that anyone can claim without an entitlement. Download it only through Rockstar, Xbox, Steam, or Epic when your account owns or legitimately accesses the game. Check the edition and requirements first: the original PC release needs 4.7 GB storage, while the Definitive Edition needs 45 GB and substantially stronger hardware.
