On a standard Windows 11 PC, Google Chrome is installed by downloading one file from Google and opening it. You do not need Command Prompt or PowerShell.
Before starting, check that your PC meets Chrome’s requirements. Google supports Windows 11 on both Intel-based and ARM-based computers. For Intel systems, the processor must be an Intel Pentium 4 or newer with SSE3 support. Windows 11 is required for ARM processors.
Download Chrome from Google
- Open your current browser, such as Microsoft Edge.
- Go to google.com/chrome.
- Select Download Chrome.
- When the download completes, open the downloaded installation file. It will normally be in your Downloads folder and may be named
ChromeSetup.exe.
Use Google’s site rather than a third-party download site. Unofficial installers can be outdated or bundled with unwanted software.

Install Google Chrome on Windows 11
- Open the downloaded Chrome installation file.
- If Windows asks, “Do you want to run this file?”, select Run.
- If User Account Control asks, “Do you want to allow this app to make changes to your device?”, select Yes.
- Wait while the installer downloads and installs Chrome. Keep the internet connection active during this step.
- When installation finishes, Chrome opens automatically.
Windows 11 may also add a Chrome shortcut to the desktop or taskbar, depending on the installer and your Windows settings. If no shortcut appears, press the Windows key and search for Chrome.

Make Chrome your default browser
Installing Chrome does not necessarily make it the default browser. To change that in Windows 11:
- Open Settings with
Windows + I. - Select Apps.
- Select Default apps.
- Search for and select Google Chrome.
- Select Set default.
Windows 11 may show separate file types and link types instead of changing every association at once. If so, select Chrome for the browser-related entries you want to change, including HTTP, HTTPS, .htm, and .html.
Sign in and import browser data
Chrome works without a Google account. To sync bookmarks, passwords, history, and other data across devices:
Recommended Free Tools

If Windows 11 is running in S mode
Windows 11 in S mode blocks applications installed from outside the Microsoft Store. Chrome’s normal installer from Google will not work until you switch out of S mode.
- Open the Microsoft Store.
- Search for
Switch out of S mode. - Open the Switch out of S mode page.
- Select Get.
- Follow the confirmation instructions.
Switching out of S mode is free, but it cannot be undone. If you want to keep S mode, use Microsoft Edge or another browser available through the Microsoft Store instead of installing Chrome from Google.
Install Chrome when the normal download fails
If the regular Chrome installer will not download or complete the installation, use Google’s alternate installer:
- Open Google’s Chrome download page.
- Scroll to the bottom and, under Chrome Family, select Other Platforms.
- Select the operating system of the target computer.
- Download the installer.
- Move the downloaded file to the Windows 11 computer, if you downloaded it on another device.
- Open the file on the target computer and follow the installation prompts.
This offline-style installer is useful when the computer has a restricted network, an unreliable connection, or a security product that interrupts the small web installer.

Chrome installation errors and fixes
| Message or error | What it means | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| OS not supported | The installer does not support the installed Windows version. | Confirm that the PC is running Windows 11 and download a fresh installer from Google. Chrome 109 was the last Chrome version for Windows 7 and Windows 8/8.1. |
| Error 4 | A newer Chrome version is already installed. | Open the existing Chrome installation. To install a different version, uninstall the current Chrome app first, then download and install the required version. |
| Error 31 | Chrome could not be reinstalled. | Restart Windows, download the installer again, and retry. If it continues, use the alternate installer. |
| Error 0x80070070 | The system disk is full, usually the C: drive. | Free space on the system drive, empty the Recycle Bin if appropriate, and run the installer again. |
| Errors 7, 12, 13, 35, 57, 102, or 103 | Google categorizes these as installation failures for unknown reasons. | Download a new installation file and retry. If that fails, use the alternate installer and check security software or network restrictions. |
Check firewall and antivirus interference
Firewall software, antivirus products, and unsupported proxy configurations can prevent the installer from connecting to Google.
To check the Windows Firewall app list:
- Open Start and select Settings.
- Use the Find a setting box to search for
Firewall. - Open Allow an app through Windows Firewall.
- Select Change settings.
- Select Allow another app, then Browse.
- Enter
%ProgramFiles(x86)%GoogleGoogleUpdaterin the file-location box. - Open the folder with the highest number, select
updater.exe, and select Add.
Some antivirus programs can block Chrome’s installer. If you trust the official installer but the installation is repeatedly blocked, Google’s troubleshooting procedure is to temporarily disable the antivirus, download Chrome again, install it, and immediately turn the antivirus back on. Do not leave antivirus protection disabled any longer than necessary.
On a work or school computer, a system administrator may control application installation, firewall rules, proxy access, or browser policies. Contact the administrator rather than trying to bypass those controls.

Proxies using supported authentication methods such as Negotiate, Kerberos, or NTLM can work with Chrome installation. A company proxy with integrated authentication may also work when your account is authorized. If the installer fails only on a managed network, ask the network administrator whether the proxy allows Google’s download and update services.

Important Windows compatibility notes
Chrome is not limited to Windows 11. Google’s current requirements list Windows 10 and later for Intel-based PCs, while ARM-based Windows PCs require Windows 11. Google’s enterprise requirements page currently lists Chrome deprecation for Windows 10 as not yet scheduled; that is separate from Microsoft’s Windows 10 support date.
Similarly, Chrome 109 is not the last version for Windows 10. Chrome 109 was the final version supporting Windows 7 and Windows 8/8.1, released on January 10, 2023.

The installer may be for an unsupported Windows version, or the download may be damaged. Confirm that Windows 11 is installed and download a fresh installer. Windows 7 and Windows 8/8.1 are no longer current Chrome targets.
Do I need administrator access to install Chrome on Windows 11?
Not every normal installation situation is described as requiring an administrator account. However, a managed computer may restrict software installation or require administrator approval. Contact the system administrator if Windows blocks the installation.

Windows 11 does not require Chrome to come from the Microsoft Store for ordinary installations. Download Chrome from Google. The restriction applies when Windows is running in S mode, where you must switch out of S mode before using Google’s installer.
How do I uninstall Chrome if I need to reinstall it?
Open Settings, choose Apps, select Installed apps, find Google Chrome, open its three-dot menu, and select Uninstall. Then download a fresh installer from Google.
The Bottom Line
For most Windows 11 users, the process is simply: open google.com/chrome, select Download Chrome, open the downloaded file, approve the Windows prompts, and wait for installation to finish. If the installer fails, check S mode, available space, antivirus or firewall interference, and try Google’s alternate installer.
