On a standard Windows 11 PC, download Chrome from Google’s official site at google.com/chrome. You do not need Command Prompt or PowerShell: the normal installation uses Google’s downloaded installer and Windows’ on-screen prompts.
Chrome supports Windows 11 on both Intel-based and ARM-based PCs. Google also currently lists Windows 10 and later for Intel processors, but this guide focuses on Windows 11.
Before downloading Chrome
Check that you are downloading the Windows version from Google rather than a third-party download site. Google’s current requirements are:

Most Windows 11 computers meet these requirements. If your PC uses an ARM processor, Windows 11 is required, and Chrome should be downloaded from Google’s Windows download page rather than an old installer copied from another computer.

How to download and install Chrome on Windows 11
- Open Microsoft Edge or another browser already installed on your computer.
- Go to https://www.google.com/chrome/.
- Select Download Chrome.
- When the download finishes, open the downloaded installation file. It will normally be in the Downloads folder.
- If Windows asks, “Do you want to run this file?”, select Run.
- If User Account Control asks, “Do you want to allow this app to make changes to your device?”, select Yes.
- Wait while the installer downloads and installs Chrome. Follow any instructions displayed by the installer.
- When installation finishes, Chrome opens automatically on Windows 11.
The regular Chrome installer does not require a separate installation command. Avoid installers hosted on download aggregators, since they may be modified or bundled with unwanted software.
Make Chrome your default browser
Chrome can be installed without making it the default browser. To change that setting in Windows 11:
- Open Chrome.
- Select the three-dot menu in the upper-right corner.
- Select Settings.
- Select Default browser in the left-hand menu.
- Select Make default.
Alternatively, open Settings → Apps → Default apps, select Google Chrome, and assign it to the web-link and file types you want Chrome to open.

To synchronize bookmarks, passwords, history, and other supported data, open Chrome and select the profile icon near the top-right corner. Sign in with your Google Account and choose the synchronization options you want.

If you are moving from Edge, Chrome may offer to import bookmarks, saved passwords, browsing history, and other data during setup. You can also review import options from Chrome menu → Bookmarks and lists → Import bookmarks and settings.
Install Chrome when the normal download fails
If the standard installer cannot complete, use Google’s alternative installer. On Google’s Chrome download page:
- Scroll to the bottom of the page.
- Under Chrome Family, select Other Platforms.
- Select the operating system of the computer where Chrome will be installed.
- Download the installer.
- Move the downloaded file to the Windows 11 PC if you downloaded it on another computer.
- Open the file on the target PC and follow the installation prompts.
This approach is useful when the computer has an unreliable connection, when the normal web installer repeatedly fails, or when you need to transfer the installer using a USB drive. Download it directly from Google rather than from an unofficial mirror.
Install Chrome on Windows 11 S mode
Windows in S mode blocks applications installed from outside the Microsoft Store. Google Chrome cannot be installed using the normal Google installer until you switch out of S mode.

To switch out of S mode:
- Open Microsoft Store.
- Search for
Switch out of S mode. - Open the Switch out of S mode page.
- Select Get.
- Follow the confirmation instructions.
Switching out of S mode is free, but it cannot be undone on Windows 11. If you must keep S mode, use Microsoft Edge or another browser available through the Microsoft Store instead of installing Chrome from Google.
Fix common Chrome installation errors
| Problem or error | What it means and what to try |

| “OS not supported” | The installer does not support the operating system. Windows 7 and Windows 8/8.1 are no longer current Chrome targets; Chrome 109, released on January 10, 2023, was the last Chrome version supporting them. Confirm that you are using Windows 11 and download a fresh installer. |
| Error 4 | A newer version of Chrome is already installed. Open the existing Chrome installation, or uninstall it before attempting to install a different version. |
| Errors 7, 12, 13, 35, 57, 102, or 103 | Google categorizes these as installation failures for unknown reasons. Download the installer again and run the new copy. If that fails, use the alternative installer. |
| Error 31 | Chrome could not be re-installed. Remove the existing Chrome installation if appropriate, restart Windows, and try a newly downloaded installer. |
| Error 0x80070070 | The system disk is full, usually the C: drive. Free space in Settings → System → Storage, then download and run the installer again. |
| Chrome is already installed for all users | The installer may detect the existing installation and open it instead. To install another version, uninstall the current Chrome app first, then download and install Chrome again. |
Check firewall, antivirus, and proxy settings
Firewall software, antivirus programs, and some proxy configurations can prevent the installer from connecting to Google. First, download the installer again because a damaged or incomplete file is a common cause of repeated failures.
To check whether Windows Firewall is blocking the installer, use this path:
- Open Start and select Settings.
- In Find a setting, enter
Firewall. - Open Allow an app through Windows Firewall.
- Select Change settings.
- Select Allow another app, then Browse.
- Enter
%ProgramFiles(x86)%GoogleGoogleUpdaterin the file-location field. - Open the folder with the highest-numbered version, select
updater.exe, and select Add.
Some antivirus products can also stop Chrome from installing. Google’s troubleshooting sequence is to temporarily turn off the antivirus, download Chrome again, install it, and then turn the antivirus back on immediately. Only do this if you understand your security software’s controls and are using the official Google download.

On a work or school network, the proxy may be controlled by an administrator. Google lists proxies using Negotiate authentication, including Kerberos and NTLM, and supported integrated-authentication proxy scenarios. If the network still blocks installation, contact the organization’s IT administrator rather than changing managed settings.
What if Windows asks for an administrator password?
Google’s normal installation instructions do not state that every Chrome installation requires an administrator account. However, a managed PC may restrict software installation, and Windows may request administrator approval. Contact the system administrator on a work, school, or otherwise managed computer.
Do not bypass organizational restrictions by downloading an unofficial portable copy. The administrator may need to deploy Chrome or approve Google’s installer.
Windows 11 Chrome facts that are often outdated
- Chrome is not limited to Windows 11. Google currently lists Windows 10 and later for Intel-based PCs. Windows 11 is specifically required for ARM-based Windows PCs.
- Chrome 109 is not the final Chrome version for Windows 10. Chrome 109 was the last version for Windows 7 and Windows 8/8.1. Google’s current enterprise table lists Windows 10 Chrome deprecation as “Not yet scheduled.”
- The Microsoft Store is not required on ordinary Windows installations. Google’s supported process uses the installer from its Chrome website. The Store restriction applies when Windows is in S mode.
- You do not need Command Prompt or PowerShell. The official standard process is download, run the installation file, approve the Windows prompts, and wait for setup to finish.

Can I install Chrome on Windows 11 ARM?
Yes. Google lists Windows 11 or later for ARM processors. Use the current installer from Google’s Chrome download page.
Why will Chrome not install on Windows 11?
Common causes include a failed or corrupted installer download, insufficient space on the system drive, an existing all-users Chrome installation, antivirus or firewall interference, proxy restrictions, and Windows S mode. Download a fresh installer first, then check the relevant cause.
Can I install Chrome without an administrator account?
It depends on the computer’s configuration. Google does not state that an administrator account is universally required for the normal installation, but managed computers may restrict installation or require administrator approval.

No. Chrome and Microsoft Edge can be installed and used on the same Windows 11 computer.
How do I uninstall Chrome from Windows 11?
Open Settings, select Apps, select Installed apps, find Google Chrome, select its three-dot menu, and choose Uninstall. Follow the prompts.
