The free Monster Hunter Wilds Prologue Demo is scheduled to appear in Nintendo eShop on October 19, 2026, Pacific Time (PT), and October 20, 2026, British Summer Time (BST). On Switch 2, open Nintendo eShop, search for the exact title, select its free listing, and choose the download option. When installation finishes, launch the demo from the HOME menu.
When the Switch 2 demo becomes available
Nintendo’s scheduled release window is October 19, 2026, in PT and October 20, 2026, in BST. Those are the dates to use when checking Nintendo eShop; the calendar date differs because of the time-zone conversion. The listing is free, so you do not need to buy the full game to obtain the prologue.
The full Monster Hunter Wilds game is scheduled for December 4, 2026. Digital preorders are scheduled to begin in Nintendo eShop when the demo goes live.

What you need before downloading
- A Nintendo Switch 2 connected to the internet.
- A Nintendo Account signed in on the console for eShop use.
- Enough free storage for the download and installation.
- The latest Switch 2 system software if you want Nintendo’s automatic-download features to work.
- A microSD Express card if you need to expand Switch 2 storage; Nintendo identifies microSD Express as the supported expansion format.
Nintendo does not publish a separate Prologue Demo file-size figure in the available product information. Check the live eShop listing for the current requirement and leave additional free space beyond that number so the installation can complete without a storage warning.

Download directly from Nintendo eShop on Switch 2
- Turn on the Switch 2 and open Nintendo eShop from the HOME menu.
- Choose the Nintendo Account you want associated with the demo.
- Select the eShop search function and enter Monster Hunter Wilds Prologue Demo.
- Open the listing whose title matches exactly. Confirm that it is the free prologue demo rather than a similarly named product or the full game.
- Select the free download option and accept any on-screen confirmation.
- Keep the console connected to the internet while the download and installation progress.
- When the download finishes, return to HOME and select the demo icon to start it.
If the title does not appear on the first search, check the release date for your time zone, verify that the console is online, and search the complete title again rather than relying on a shortened term.
Start the demo after installation
Open the installed software
From HOME, highlight the Monster Hunter Wilds Prologue Demo icon and press A. The first launch follows the demo’s opening setup. Allow the initial data and configuration screens to finish instead of closing the software during setup.
Create your hunter and Palico
The prologue begins with character creation. Follow the prompts to create your hunter and your Palico, then confirm the setup to enter the opening adventure. Your choices and progress are stored in the demo’s save data.

Continue a previous session
On later launches, select the existing save when the game presents it. If the software appears to have no save, make sure you are using the same Switch 2 user profile and Nintendo Account that created the original data.
Use Nintendo’s website to trigger a download
You can initiate a download from Nintendo’s website, but Nintendo requires the Nintendo Account used there to be linked to the Switch 2. The console must also be registered as that account’s active download console. To establish that registration, open Nintendo eShop on the Switch 2 at least once while signed in to the linked account.
- On the Switch 2, open Nintendo eShop with the Nintendo Account you intend to use for the website download.
- Leave eShop after it has opened successfully; this first eShop visit registers the console as the account’s active download console.
- On Nintendo’s official website, sign in with that same Nintendo Account and locate the Monster Hunter Wilds Prologue Demo listing after it becomes available.
- Choose the website’s download or purchase-free-software command for the demo.
- Keep the Switch 2 connected to the internet and ready to receive the download.
If the website does not offer a download command, check the account link and active-console registration first. A website session using a different Nintendo Account cannot target the Switch 2 account that owns the console registration.

Automatic downloading is not a separate version of the demo. It is simply a delivery method, and the same storage and account requirements still apply.
Storage planning for Switch 2
How much space to reserve
Nintendo’s US listing estimates the complete Switch 2 version of Monster Hunter Wilds at 39.1 GB. That figure is for the full game, not the prologue demo, and it is an estimate published by Nintendo in 2026. The available product information does not state the demo’s separate size.
Before selecting download, open the current demo listing and note its displayed storage requirement. Keep more free space than the displayed number because the console needs room to download and install software. If internal storage is insufficient, insert a compatible microSD Express card and retry the download.

Do you need Nintendo Switch Online?
Nintendo Switch Online is not identified as a requirement to download or start this free demo. You do need a Nintendo Account for eShop access, and Nintendo’s website-download process specifically requires that account to be linked to the console.
The demo supports local multiplayer, but online multiplayer is not included. Because there is no online demo mode to access, an online membership does not add an online session option to this prologue.

Local play
The prologue supports local play. For a local group, provide one compatible controller for each participant. Nintendo’s product information states that multiplayer requires one compatible controller per player.

- Pair or connect each compatible controller before entering the local multiplayer setup.
- Make sure every participant has a controller assigned to the intended player slot.
- Use the demo’s local-play option when it is presented in the game menus.
Online play
Online multiplayer is not part of the Prologue Demo. You cannot use the demo to join a remote friend’s session, and adding Nintendo Switch Online does not change that limitation. Online functionality for the full game should be evaluated from the full game’s own specifications rather than inferred from this demo.

Save data created in the Prologue Demo can be carried into the full Switch 2 game when it launches on December 4, 2026. Use the same Switch 2 and user profile for the smoothest continuity, and avoid deleting the demo’s save data if you want to preserve the prologue progress for transfer.
The transfer applies to the demo’s save data; it does not mean the demo itself becomes the full game. You will still need the full game at launch to continue beyond the prologue content.

Troubleshoot common download problems
The demo cannot be found
- Confirm that the calendar date has reached October 19, 2026, PT, or October 20, 2026, BST.
- Search for the complete title, Monster Hunter Wilds Prologue Demo.
- Open Nintendo eShop with the correct Nintendo Account and verify the console’s internet connection.
The website does not show a download option
- Sign out and back in with the Nintendo Account linked to the Switch 2.
- Open Nintendo eShop on the Switch 2 at least once with that account so the console is registered as the active download console.
- Return to the website listing and try the download command again.
The download stops because of storage
- Check the live listing for the demo’s current required space; its separate size is not stated in Nintendo’s published information available here.
- Delete or archive software you no longer need, then retry.
- Use a recognized microSD Express card if internal storage remains too low.
Automatic download does not start
- Update Switch 2 to the latest system software.
- Confirm that the console is connected to the internet.
- Enable automatic downloads in the console’s settings.
- Free enough storage for the demo and its installation.
The demo starts without an earlier save
- Launch the software from the same HOME user profile used for the original session.
- Check that the original save was not deleted during storage management.
- Complete the opening setup again only if the earlier data is unavailable; the transfer to the full game depends on retaining the demo save.
