To use a custom ringtone on a Samsung Galaxy, download a compatible audio file to the phone, then open Settings > Sounds and vibration > Ringtone and add it from the file picker. A song available only through a streaming service cannot be selected directly. You can also choose a built-in tone or assign a different ringtone to a saved contact.
Choose a built-in ringtone or download an audio file
A built-in tone is the quickest option: open the ringtone settings, preview the available sounds, and select one. For a personal ringtone, use an audio file that is saved locally on your Galaxy and that you are entitled to use.
Samsung says a ringtone must be a physical song file downloaded to the device. A track that is only available to play or cache within a streaming service is not a usable ringtone file. Samsung suggests checking Galaxy Store or Google Play Store for other tones, but availability can vary.

Which audio formats can a Galaxy use?
Samsung UK lists MP3, WMA, AAC, and FLAC as supported formats in its ringtone guidance, and says M4A files need conversion to one of those formats. Compatibility can vary by phone and software version, so the practical check is whether the file appears in your Galaxy’s ringtone picker. Samsung France’s instructions describe adding a personal MP3.

How to download and set a general ringtone
- Save the file to the phone. Download an audio file directly to your Galaxy or move one you already own onto the device. Do not rely on a streaming-service download.
- Open the ringtone settings. Go to Settings > Sounds and vibration > Ringtone. If prompted, allow the requested access to audio or storage.
- Add the local file. Tap Add or the + icon, choose the audio file in the picker, and confirm. On Samsung’s US instructions, you can optionally enable Play selected highlights only to use selected portions rather than starting at the beginning, then tap Done.
- Preview and select the tone. Tap a tone to hear it, then make sure it is selected as the ringtone. The exact labels or order can differ between Galaxy models and software versions.
How to set a ringtone for one contact
To distinguish calls from a saved contact, open Contacts, select the person, and choose More options > Change ringtone/vibration > Ringtone. Select a tone or add a local audio file, then save the change. Menu names can vary by device.
This setting applies to ordinary calls handled by the phone. Calls made through WhatsApp or another calling app may use that app’s own sound and notification settings instead.

When a downloaded ringtone does not appear or play
The file is missing from the ringtone picker
- Check that it is stored on the Galaxy itself, rather than available only inside a streaming app or in a cloud location the picker cannot access.
- Check its format. Samsung UK lists MP3, WMA, AAC, and FLAC; its guidance says M4A needs conversion. A supported format on one model is not a guarantee that every file will be recognized on every Galaxy.
- Allow any file or storage permission prompt. Samsung notes that some media may not be recognized, including because of compatibility or operator restrictions.
The phone does not ring for incoming calls
- Check that ringtone volume is turned up and that the intended ringtone is selected.
- Check whether Do not Disturb or a mode is suppressing sound; review Modes and Routines if applicable.
- If the call comes through a video-calling or messaging app, check that app’s sound settings.
- Blocked callers and call forwarding can also affect whether a call rings on the phone.
Why the menus may look different
Samsung’s France support instructions, updated 1 July 2026, show the steps on a Galaxy S26+ running Android 16 and One UI 8.5. Samsung cautions that features and screens vary by model and software version. The paths above reflect Samsung’s support guidance, but a different Galaxy may use slightly different labels or controls.
