On your PS4, sign in to the PlayStation Network account that bought the digital game, open Library > Purchased, select the game, and choose Download. The game installs automatically after the download finishes. For an add-on, open the purchased game, choose PlayStation Store > Your Add-Ons, and select the arrow beside the add-on.

If the title is missing or shows a padlock, verify the purchasing account and transaction, check whether access came from PlayStation Plus or another user, restore licenses, and then check storage, network, service status, and system software. A delisting removes a title from new sales; it is not, by itself, proof that an earlier entitlement has disappeared, but Sony does not make a universal promise that every delisted title can be redownloaded forever in every region.

What a delisting changes—and what it does not

A delisted game is no longer offered for a new purchase through the relevant PlayStation Store storefront. That describes the store listing, not necessarily the entitlement already attached to an account. Sony’s general PS4 download instructions still direct owners of purchased games to Library > Purchased; they do not say that a game must remain on sale to appear there.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Availability is still title-, account-, and region-dependent. The general procedure cannot guarantee that every individual delisted game remains downloadable indefinitely, nor can it resolve a regional licensing change or an account problem. Treat the Purchased library as the first place to check, then work through the entitlement and console checks below.

Identify which kind of access you had

The recovery path depends on why the game was available to you. A purchase, a PlayStation Plus benefit, and another user’s shared license are different entitlements.

Access type What to verify What can block reinstalling
Digital purchase Sign in to the account that completed the order and confirm the transaction in its history. The wrong account, a hidden item, a license-sync problem, or a service issue.
PlayStation Plus monthly or catalog access Confirm that the subscription is active. For a catalog title, confirm that it remains in the catalog. An expired subscription or removal from the applicable catalog.
Another user’s purchase shared on the console Have the owning account activate this PS4 as its primary PS4. The owner is not signed in or the console is not activated as that account’s primary PS4.

A padlock does not identify one single fault. Use the row that matches how you originally obtained the game before trying more disruptive troubleshooting.

Before you start: a quick entitlement checklist

  • Know the exact PSN account and region used for the order.
  • Have access to that account’s transaction history and sign-in details.
  • Check that the PS4 can reach PlayStation Network and has enough free storage.
  • If another account supplied the game, confirm that account’s primary-PS4 arrangement.
  • If the game came through Plus, identify whether it was a monthly claim or a catalog title.
  • Do not confuse a digital entitlement with a disc installation. A disc can install from the physical media; the steps here concern a digital purchase tied to an account.

This checklist prevents the most common mistake: repeatedly retrying a download while signed into a profile that never owned the license.

Reinstall a purchased digital game on the PS4

  1. Sign in to the purchasing account. Use the PSN account that paid for the game, not merely an account that used to play it on the console.
  2. Open the Library. From the PS4 home screen, select Library.
  3. Open Purchased. This list contains the digital items associated with the signed-in account.
  4. Select the game. Highlight the title you want to install.
  5. Choose Download. The PS4 begins downloading and then installs the game automatically.

Keep the console connected to the internet while the download and installation proceed. If the title is not visible, stop after this check and use the missing-purchase procedure rather than assuming the delisting removed your entitlement.

Download an add-on or expansion

  1. In Library > Purchased, select the base game.
  2. Open PlayStation Store from the game page.
  3. Choose Your Add-Ons.
  4. Select the arrow beside the add-on you own.

Add-ons use this extra Store navigation even when the base game itself is already installed. If an add-on is absent, check the purchasing account and restore licenses as described below. A missing add-on does not necessarily mean the base-game license is missing; treat each entitlement separately.

Use a remote download instead

Sony also documents starting a PS4 download from the web or the PlayStation App. Remote downloading has two additional console requirements: the PS4 must be activated as the primary PS4 for the purchasing account, and automatic downloads must be configured. If those settings are not ready, Sony says the download begins when the console is next turned on.

Route Where you start Requirements and result
Console download PS4: Library > Purchased Sign in to the purchasing account, select the game, and choose Download. Installation follows automatically.
Remote download PlayStation Store on the web or in the PlayStation App The account’s PS4 must be its primary PS4 and automatic downloads must be configured. Otherwise the console starts the download when it is next powered on.

If a remote request appears to do nothing, turn on the PS4 and check its notifications and downloads. Confirm the primary-console and automatic-download settings before repeating the request; sending it again will not fix a missing entitlement. The console route is usually easier for diagnosing ownership because it lets you immediately see which account’s Purchased list you are viewing.

When the game is missing from Purchased

1. Confirm the account and transaction

Sign out and back in with the account that actually completed the purchase. Then review that account’s transaction history. A family member’s account, a second regional account, or an account created on another PS4 can make a legitimate purchase look absent when you check the wrong profile.

If the transaction is not in the account’s history, do not assume the Store listing is the problem. Check other PSN accounts you control and the account’s region. A purchase is tied to the account used for the order; simply having played the game on a console does not transfer ownership. Keep in mind that a title bought in one regional storefront may not appear as an entitlement on a different regional account.

  • Easily store and access 5TB of content on the go with the Seagate portable drive, a USB external hard Drive
  • Designed to work with Windows or Mac computers, this external hard drive makes backup a snap just drag and drop
  • To get set up, connect the portable hard drive to a computer for automatic recognition software required
  • This USB drive provides plug and play simplicity with the included 18 inch USB 3.0 cable
  • The available storage capacity may vary.

2. Check whether it was a Plus benefit

If you received the game through PlayStation Plus rather than buying it outright, verify that the subscription is active. For a title obtained from a Plus catalog, also verify that the title remains in that catalog. A catalog removal or expired subscription is a different situation from a delisted game that you purchased.

Do not infer ownership from the fact that the game was once playable. A Plus entitlement can disappear from your usable library when the subscription status or catalog availability changes, while an outright purchase is checked against the purchasing account’s transaction history.

3. Check sharing and primary-PS4 activation

When another account owns the game, Sony’s troubleshooting guidance says the owning account should activate this console as its primary PS4. Sign in as the owner and check the activation, then return to the account that uses the console. Sharing does not convert the other user’s license into a separate purchase on your account.

If the owner has changed consoles or removed the primary activation, the shared user can see a padlock even though the owner still has a valid purchase. Restore the owner’s primary-PS4 setup first; do not buy the game again merely because the secondary account cannot find it in its own Purchased list.

4. Check hidden items and restore licenses

Sony’s troubleshooting guidance includes checking whether a purchase has been hidden. If the title is hidden, unhide it using the account’s library controls, then check Purchased again. The exact menu wording can vary with system software, so use the account’s library or hidden-content controls rather than treating a missing tile as proof of a lost license.

  1. On the PS4 home screen, open Settings.
  2. Select Account Management.
  3. Choose Restore Licenses.
  4. Select Restore and wait for the process to finish.

Sony lists license restoration as a remedy for a padlock and for a game or add-on that cannot be located. Return to Library > Purchased after it completes and check again. Restoring licenses does not create a purchase, change the account that owns it, or override a regional restriction; it refreshes the console’s license information.

Fix downloads that fail, stall, or remain locked

Symptom Action
The game is not listed Confirm the purchasing account, review transaction history, check whether the item is hidden, and restore licenses.
A padlock appears Check whether the access came from PlayStation Plus or another user, verify the subscription or primary-PS4 activation, then restore licenses.
The download will not start Check PlayStation service status, update PS4 system software, and verify free storage.
The download is stuck Open Notifications > Downloads, pause and resume the item, test the network connection, and retry.
The queue entry is corrupted or repeatedly fails In Notifications > Downloads, cancel and delete the download entry. Find the game again in Library and start a fresh download.

Check service status and system software

A Store or PSN service interruption can prevent entitlement checks or stop a download even when the purchase is valid. Check PlayStation service status before changing account settings. Also install any available PS4 system-software update, because Sony includes current system software among its troubleshooting checks. If services are degraded, wait until they recover before concluding that the delisting caused the failure.

Check available storage

On the game’s Store listing, open the Details section to see the stated minimum free-space requirement. Then check the console’s available space at Settings > Storage. The requirement is the space Sony lists for that title; updates and temporary installation data can also require room while the process runs, so avoid starting with a nearly full drive.

If storage is the obstacle, remove or move unneeded content and retry. Sony also documents PS4 games installed on USB extended storage. An external hard drive is optional, and the support material does not establish compatibility for a particular model; use it only as a storage solution, not as a way to bypass an entitlement or delisting. Moving an installed game to extended storage does not change which account owns it.

Retry a stalled download

  1. Open Notifications > Downloads.
  2. Highlight the game and choose Pause, then resume it.
  3. If it remains stuck, test the PS4’s network connection.
  4. Cancel and delete the failed download entry.
  5. Return to Library > Purchased, select the game, and choose Download again.
  6. If the problem persists, follow Sony’s Safe Mode troubleshooting guidance, including rebuilding the database.

Rebuilding the database is a later troubleshooting step, not the first response to a title that merely disappeared from the library. Resolve account, entitlement, license, and storage issues first. Deleting a queue entry removes the incomplete download, not the purchase record, so you can start a fresh attempt from Purchased.

Console download versus remote download

The two routes solve different problems. A console download gives you direct feedback from the PS4 and is the best first test when you are unsure whether the entitlement is present. A remote download is convenient when the console is elsewhere, but it depends on primary-console activation and automatic-download settings.

  • Choose the console route when the title is already visible, the PS4 is in front of you, or you need to inspect notifications and error messages.
  • Choose remote download when the PS4 is configured as the account’s primary console and automatic downloads are enabled.
  • Do not use remote downloading as an ownership test. A request can wait for the next console startup, while a wrong account or missing entitlement still prevents installation.

What Sony’s terms say about long-term redownloads

The Sony Interactive Entertainment US Terms of Service dated March 2026 state that purchased items are accessed through the account used for the order. They also place the risk of loss of downloaded content and responsibility for its ongoing storage and safekeeping on the user, and state that Sony is not obligated to provide replacement copies.

Clause 8.16 says: “We are not obligated to provide you with replacement copies for any reason.” This is a US terms document. Do not apply that wording automatically to another country without checking the terms for that region.

The practical consequence is important: the Purchased-library procedure is the correct first attempt, but it is not a perpetual-access guarantee. No universal timeline or percentage for delisted-game availability has been established, and a general support page cannot settle the future status of every title, account, or region.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

That limitation is why keeping an already-installed copy can be sensible when practical, while still maintaining enough storage for updates. Installation is not a substitute for an entitlement, but deleting a working local copy creates a future download dependency that may be harder to resolve if account, service, or regional conditions change.

Keep an already-owned game usable

  • Keep the purchasing account accessible. You need that account to verify the order and retrieve the entitlement.
  • Keep the game installed when practical. A delisting can remove a new-purchase listing even though an installed copy remains on the console.
  • Leave sufficient storage. Updates or a future reinstall cannot proceed if the PS4 lacks the space shown in the Store’s Details section.
  • Record which account owns the title. This avoids trying to restore a license from a profile that only shared or played the game.
  • For shared access, maintain the owner’s primary-PS4 setup. If that activation changes, the other user may see a padlock until the owner’s sharing arrangement is restored.
  • Keep regional details straight. Note the storefront region associated with the purchase; switching to another regional account does not move the entitlement.

These steps improve your ability to use an existing entitlement; they do not create a new license or guarantee that Sony will supply a replacement copy if a download later becomes unavailable.

A decision path for your specific problem

  1. Can you see the game in Library > Purchased? Select it and choose Download. For an add-on, use Your Add-Ons.
  2. Is it missing? Sign in to the purchasing account, verify the transaction, check hidden items, and restore licenses.
  3. Is there a padlock? Determine whether the title came from a Plus subscription or another user’s purchase, then check the subscription or primary-PS4 activation.
  4. Does the download fail? Check service status, system software, and storage; pause and resume the queue, then cancel and retry if necessary.
  5. Does it still fail? Test the network and use the Safe Mode database-rebuild step in Sony’s troubleshooting sequence.

If none of these checks restores access, the remaining issue may be specific to the title, account, or region. Sony’s general instructions do not establish that every delisted game must remain downloadable forever, so an unresolved case requires account-specific support rather than a different Library menu.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I redownload a PS4 game after it is delisted?

Start with Library > Purchased on the PS4 while signed in to the account that bought it. A delisting removes the new-sale listing, but it does not by itself prove that an earlier entitlement is gone. Availability can still depend on the title, account, and region, and Sony does not promise perpetual redownload access for every game.

Why is my purchased game not in the Library?

Confirm that you are using the account that completed the order, review its transaction history, check whether the item is hidden, and run Settings > Account Management > Restore Licenses > Restore. Also check the account’s region and PlayStation service status.

What should I do if the game has a padlock?

First identify the entitlement. For a PlayStation Plus game, verify an active subscription and catalog availability. For another user’s purchase, have the owning account activate this PS4 as its primary PS4. Then restore licenses.

How do I reinstall a PS4 add-on?

Open Library > Purchased, select the base game, choose PlayStation Store > Your Add-Ons, and select the arrow beside the add-on. If it is absent, verify the purchasing account and restore licenses.

Can I start the download from my phone?

Yes. Sony documents remote downloads through the web or PlayStation App. The account’s PS4 must be activated as its primary PS4 and automatic downloads must be configured; otherwise the download begins when the console is next turned on.

What if the download is stuck?

Open Notifications > Downloads, pause and resume the item, test the network, and check storage, system software, and PlayStation service status. If necessary, cancel and delete the failed queue entry, then start again from Purchased. Safe Mode database rebuilding is a later troubleshooting step.

Does restoring licenses delete my game or purchase?

No. Restore Licenses refreshes the console’s license information and is listed by Sony for padlocks and missing games or add-ons. It does not create a new purchase, transfer ownership, or override a regional restriction.

Should I buy an external hard drive to recover a delisted game?

Only if storage space is the obstacle. Sony discusses PS4 games on USB extended storage, but no particular drive model is established here. External storage cannot restore an entitlement or bypass a delisting.

The Bottom Line

For a digital PS4 game you bought, use Library > Purchased and select Download; use Your Add-Ons for expansions. If the title is missing or locked, verify the purchasing account and transaction, distinguish a purchase from Plus or shared access, restore licenses, and then check service status, system software, storage, and the download queue. A delisting is not automatically an entitlement cancellation, but Sony’s March 2026 US terms say it is not obligated to provide replacement copies, so no general promise of permanent redownload access exists.
