Download the free Bedrock Dedicated Server from Minecraft’s official server page, keep it in a dedicated folder, launch it once to create its files and default world, configure the server, allow its UDP ports through your network, and connect with a Bedrock client running the same release. Windows, Android and iOS clients can enter an address manually; consoles have additional limitations.
What you are installing
Minecraft Bedrock Dedicated Server is Mojang’s free server program for Bedrock Edition. It is separate from the Java Edition server, so a Java server download will not host a Bedrock world and a Bedrock client cannot join it.

Release and preview builds are not interchangeable
A preview server is not compatible with the full release of Bedrock Edition. Every player and the server must use the same compatible build. If one player updates to a newer client before the server is updated, that player may receive a version-mismatch error rather than a connection.

Check the requirements before downloading
The official download page lists these minimum specifications. Because requirements and supported operating systems can change, verify the live page before installing.

Download and install the server
Windows installation
- Open the official Bedrock server download page and select the Windows release that matches your clients.
- Create a dedicated folder such as
C:MinecraftServer. Do not run the server from Downloads; the server keeps worlds, packs, logs andserver.propertiesbeside its executable. - Extract the downloaded ZIP into that folder. Keep the files together and avoid renaming individual server files.
- Open the folder and run
bedrock_server.exeonce. Windows may ask for firewall permission; allow the private network profile if you intend to test on your home network. - Wait for the first-start files and default world to appear. Stop the process with the server’s normal stop command or close it only after saving; an abrupt shutdown can interrupt world writes.
Linux installation
- Download the Linux build for the matching release from the official page.
- Extract it into a dedicated directory owned by the account that will run the server.
- Make the binary executable, for example with
chmod +x bedrock_server. - Run the binary once from that directory. The first run creates the configuration and world files.
- After the files are generated, stop the process with
Ctrl+C. Edit the configuration before starting the server for real.
Do not mix files from preview and release archives. If you change channels, make a complete copy of the world first and test the new build on that copy.

Configure server.properties
The first run creates server.properties in the server folder. Open it with a plain-text editor and review the settings below before inviting anyone.

Save the file, then start the server again and watch its console for errors. Change one setting at a time when diagnosing a problem so you know which edit had an effect.

Ports and network access
Bedrock Dedicated Server uses UDP by default:
- UDP 19132: default IPv4 port.
- UDP 19133: default IPv6 port.
Both values can be changed in server.properties. If friends connect over the internet, allow the selected UDP port in the computer’s firewall and forward that same UDP port from the router to the server computer. A TCP-only rule will not substitute for the required UDP rule.
If you run multiple Bedrock servers on one machine, start the server intended to use the default port 19132 first. A server started on another port can claim 19132 before a later process binds to it, leaving the later server unable to use the expected default. Give each additional server a distinct port and forward each one separately.

Use your own world
The world created on first launch
A clean installation generates a default world during its first successful run. The world data is kept in the server directory rather than inside the game application. Stop the server before copying, moving or replacing world files, and keep an untouched backup before every change.
Bringing an existing Bedrock world to the server
Work from a copy of the world you want to host. Place the copied world with the server’s world data, then make sure the world name selected in server.properties corresponds exactly to that folder. Names are case-sensitive on Linux. Start the server and confirm in its console that it opened the intended world before allowing players to join.

Do not open the same live world simultaneously in a local game and on the dedicated server. Two processes writing the same files can corrupt progress. Export or copy the world while it is closed, and retain dated backups so you can roll back after a failed update or add-on change.
Worlds, packs and configuration belong together
Keep the world folder, behavior/resource packs and server.properties in the server’s dedicated directory. Moving only part of an installation can make a world appear empty or cause missing-content errors. When transferring the server to another computer, copy the complete server folder while the process is stopped.
Join the server from Bedrock Edition
Testing on the same computer
- Start the dedicated server and leave its console running.
- Open Bedrock Edition on the same computer.
- Choose Play, open the Servers tab and select Add Server or the equivalent custom-server option shown by your version.
- Enter
127.0.0.1orlocalhostas the address and19132as the port if you kept the default IPv4 port. - Save the entry and connect. If this works, the server itself is operating; problems that occur only from another device are usually firewall, router or address issues.
Joining from another Windows, Android or iOS device
- Find the server computer’s local IPv4 address, such as
192.168.x.x, from the operating system’s network settings. - Ensure both devices are on the same home network for a local test.
- In Bedrock Edition, open Play → Servers → Add Server.
- Enter the server computer’s local address and the configured UDP port, normally
19132. - Save and connect. Every client must run the same server-compatible Bedrock version.
Friends connecting from outside your home
Give friends the public address of your internet connection, not the server computer’s private 192.168.x.x address. Forward the configured UDP port to the server computer, permit it through the host firewall, and confirm that the server is running before testing. Some internet providers place customers behind carrier-grade NAT, which prevents ordinary inbound forwarding; in that case, a directly reachable host or another networking solution is required.
Console players
Third-party setup guides report that Xbox, PlayStation and Nintendo Switch versions do not provide the same manual custom-IP entry available on Windows, Android and iOS. This limitation is not confirmed by an official Mojang page in the available documentation, so check the current console version and account/network options before promising console access. Do not assume that a server reachable from a phone will automatically appear in a console’s server list.
Troubleshoot the common failure points

Operate the world safely
- Back up before upgrades: stop the server, copy the entire world and configuration, then install the new build alongside the old one or retain a clearly dated rollback copy.
- Match every add-on: transfer the required behavior and resource packs with the world, not just the world folder.
- Limit privileges: leave
default-player-permission-levelat the least powerful setting appropriate for ordinary players. - Do not expose unnecessary ports: open only the UDP port you configured, and remove forwarding if the server is no longer public.
- Watch the console: startup errors, failed bindings and world-loading messages identify problems before players report them.
Version and transport changes to watch
Bedrock networking is evolving. Minecraft Wiki documentation reports that newer Bedrock releases use NetherNet, a WebRTC-based transport, alongside legacy RakNet, and labels version 26.50 as the point at which NetherNet became the dedicated-server default; it also reports RakNet deprecation in a 26.60.22 preview. Those labels were not verified against Mojang release notes here, so do not change firewall rules solely because of them. The documented UDP port settings remain the practical connection values; recheck the official download page and release notes whenever you update.
