On your Switch, open Nintendo eShop from the HOME Menu, choose the user linked to your Nintendo Account, find a game that offers a demo, open its product page, and select the demo download option. The download appears on the HOME Menu; when it finishes, select the new demo icon to play. You can also start a download from an official game page on a phone or computer if your Nintendo Account and console are linked.
What you need before downloading
A free demo is digital software delivered through Nintendo eShop. Check these conditions first:
- A Nintendo Account linked to your Switch user. Nintendo requires the account to be linked before you initiate the download.
- An internet connection. The console must be online to open the store and begin downloading.
- Enough console storage. If the internal storage is full, you may need to delete unused software or use a separately purchased, officially licensed microSDXC card.
- An eligible game in your region. Demo availability depends on the title and Nintendo eShop region, and listings can change over time.
You do not need Nintendo Switch Online merely to download or play an ordinary demo. A separate Nintendo Switch Online requirement applies to limited-time Game Trials, explained below.
How to download a free demo on Nintendo Switch
- Connect the console to the internet. Confirm that your Switch is online before opening the store. A demo cannot begin downloading while the system is offline.
- Open Nintendo eShop. From the HOME Menu, select the Nintendo eShop icon.
- Choose the correct user. Select the Switch user whose Nintendo Account is linked to the console. eShop uses that account for the download.
- Find a game with a demo. Search for a title, browse the store, or use Nintendo’s official catalog of games with free demos. Not every game has a demo, and a demo shown in one eShop region may not be offered in another.
- Open the game’s product page. Review the listing for a control specifically offering the demo. The wording can vary by title, but it will identify the free demo download rather than the paid game.
- Start the download. Select the demo download control and confirm any on-screen prompts. The Switch places the software in the download queue.
- Watch progress on the HOME Menu. Return to HOME to see the download status. You can wait for the installation to finish before launching it.
- Launch the demo. When the download completes, select the demo’s icon on the HOME Menu and choose the option to start the software.
The demo is a separate icon from the full game. If you only see the paid game listing, look for a distinct demo option on that same product page or confirm that the title currently offers one in your eShop region.

Where to find Switch game demos
Search in Nintendo eShop
Use the eShop search field to enter the game’s name, then open the matching product page. A demo is available only when the page presents a demo download control. Store menus and promotional placements can change, so searching the title directly is often the quickest route.
Use Nintendo’s free-demo catalog
Nintendo also maintains an official catalog of games with free demos. Select a title from that catalog to reach its listing, then follow the same download process in eShop. Because availability is title- and region-dependent, a catalog entry does not guarantee that every regional account will see identical options at every moment.
Can you download a Switch demo from a phone or computer?
Yes. Nintendo supports starting a demo download from an official game page viewed on a phone or computer when the Nintendo Account is linked to the Switch and the console is connected. The website route sends the download request to the linked console; it does not turn the phone or computer into the place where the Switch software is installed.

- Compatible with Top Devices: Perfectly compatible with Nintendo Switch (Not 2), Steam Deck, ROG Ally, Android phones, tablets, and even retro game emulators. Includes a full-size SD adapter for seamless use with laptops, handheld consoles, and compatible card readers.

- Battle-Tested Durability: Engineered for long sessions and intense environments. Waterproof, shockproof, temperature-resistant, X-ray safe — designed to withstand accidental drops, outdoor use, and frequent device swapping.
- Actual Capacity: Storage may be smaller than the labeled capacity because manufacturers use the decimal system (1 GB = 1,000,000,000 bytes) , operating systems display storage using the binary system (1 GiB = 1,073,741,824 bytes). This is a normal industry practice and does not affect performance.
- Sign in to the Nintendo Account associated with the user on your Switch.
- Open the official page for a game that offers a demo.
- Select the control to download the demo to your console.
- Leave the Switch connected to the internet so it can receive and process the request.
- Check the HOME Menu for download progress, then launch the finished demo from its icon.
If the remote option is unavailable, verify that you are signed in to the same Nintendo Account used by the console and that the console has an internet connection. Region and title availability still apply when the request starts from a browser.
How to play the demo after it downloads
When the download indicator reaches completion, the demo appears as its own software icon on the HOME Menu. Select that icon and start the game. Read the title’s own notices about supported features: an online mode inside a demo can have separate connection or service requirements even though downloading the demo itself is free.
A locally downloaded demo is installed on the Switch. That differs from a cloud-game trial, which streams gameplay and continues to depend on a fast, stable internet connection.

- Nintendo Switch 2 uses a new standard of expandable memory card called microSD Express (sold separately). This kind of memory card is needed for faster access speeds and to ensure games will run smoothly.
- Please note: Nintendo Switch 2 is only compatible with microSD Express cards. If the microSD cards you have used for Nintendo Switch do not support microSD Express standards, you cannot use them with Nintendo Switch 2.
Demo versus Nintendo Switch Online Game Trial
Nintendo explicitly distinguishes an ordinary demo from a Game Trial. A demo is a free try-before-you-buy version listed with a particular game. A Game Trial is a free downloadable full version made available to Nintendo Switch Online members for a limited event period.
Recommended Free Tools
| Feature | Ordinary demo | Game Trial |
|---|---|---|
| What you download | A demo or tryout version of a game | The full game offered as a temporary trial |
| Nintendo Switch Online | Not required simply because the title has a demo | Active Nintendo Switch Online membership required |
| Availability | Depends on the title and eShop region | Available only during Nintendo’s stated trial period |
| Where to start | Open the game’s eShop product page and choose its demo download option | In eShop, open Nintendo Switch Online in the left menu, choose an available Game Trial, and select Download |
| After the period ends | Use according to the demo’s own availability | The full-game trial is playable only during the announced event period |
Do not look for a Game Trial when you simply want a normal demo. For a Game Trial, open eShop with an active Nintendo Switch Online membership, select Nintendo Switch Online in the left-hand menu, choose a listed trial, and select Download.
Cloud-game trials: why they work differently
Some trial experiences are cloud versions rather than software installed entirely on the console. They may appear as a separate eShop download or as a free launcher. The launcher connects to a remote game server and streams the game, so Nintendo requires a stable, high-speed internet connection while you play.

- A cloud trial can require continuous high-speed connectivity after installation.
- It is not equivalent to a locally installed demo that can generally be opened without maintaining a connection, apart from any online features the game itself requires.
- If streaming is unstable, the issue may be the network connection rather than the download or the Switch’s storage.
How to redownload a deleted demo
Most demos can be downloaded again from their Nintendo eShop listing. Open eShop with the user who originally obtained the software, find the game, and select Download on its product page. The Switch begins downloading automatically, and progress is visible on the HOME Menu.
If the demo no longer shows a download control, check whether the title is still offered in your account’s eShop region. A listing can change or be withdrawn, so the absence of the option may reflect current availability rather than a problem with your console.

Free space in the console’s internal storage
Digital content cannot start downloading until the Switch has enough free space. Remove software you no longer need or manage existing digital content through the console’s storage settings, then retry the demo download from its eShop page.

- Compatible with Nintendo-Switch (NOT Nintendo-Switch 2)
- Expand your storage in a flash: ideal for Android smartphones and tablets, Chromebooks, and Windows laptops.
- Increase your TV show, movie, and Full HD video[4] recording collections dramatically with up to a massive 1.5TB[1].
- Transfer files fast with up to 150MB/s[2] read speeds and SanDisk MobileMate USB micro 3.0 microSD card reader[6].
- Load apps faster with A1-rated performance[3].
Use a microSDXC card
Nintendo supports storing digital content on an officially licensed microSDXC card sold separately. Before buying one, verify the current capacity and compatibility for your Switch model. Insert the compatible card according to Nintendo’s hardware instructions, then retry the download; the system can use the added storage for digital content.
Storage capacity is not specified by the demo listing in the general download steps, so check the individual title’s requirement on its product page and ensure more free space is available than the stated size before starting.

The game page has no demo option
- The game may not offer a demo at all.
- The demo may be unavailable in your eShop region.
- The offer may have been removed or changed since you last checked.
Search Nintendo’s free-demo catalog and the title’s current eShop listing. Do not select the paid game by mistake; the demo must be identified as its own download option.

- Confirm the Switch is connected to the internet.
- Check that the selected user is linked to a Nintendo Account.
- Look at the HOME Menu for a queued or paused download.
- Check available storage and retry after freeing space or adding compatible microSDXC storage.
The icon is missing from HOME
The icon appears when the download has completed. Return to HOME and check the download indicator rather than trying to launch the software while it is still transferring. If the download finished but the icon is not present, reopen eShop with the same user and use the title’s download option again.
A cloud trial is buffering or disconnecting
Cloud versions need a stable, high-speed internet connection during play. A poor streaming experience is consistent with the cloud requirement; it does not mean that installing a larger microSDXC card will improve the stream.
The demo’s online mode will not connect
Online features inside a demo can have requirements separate from the free download. Follow the connection or service notice shown by that particular title. The fact that the demo itself is free does not guarantee that every online mode uses the same access conditions.
