To download a PlayStation Plus Game Catalog game, you need an active PlayStation Plus Extra or Premium membership, sign in to the subscribing account, open the catalog on your console, select an eligible title, and choose Download. Premium members can choose Stream for catalog games that support cloud play instead of installing them.
Extra is the first tier with the Game Catalog. Premium includes that catalog, adds the Classics Catalog, and enables streaming for many eligible catalog titles. Availability depends on the game, console, and region, so the buttons shown on a game’s listing—Download or Stream—are the final eligibility check.
Which PlayStation Plus plan do you need?
PlayStation Plus has separate benefits by membership tier. The Game Catalog is included with Extra and Premium; the lower Essential tier does not provide Game Catalog access. Premium also includes the Classics Catalog and cloud streaming for many games in both catalogs.
| Membership | Game Catalog | Classics Catalog | Catalog streaming |
|---|---|---|---|
| Essential | Not included | Not included | Not included |
| Extra | Included | Not included | Not included |
| Premium | Included | Included | Available for many eligible titles |
Catalog lineups, regional rights, and individual game options can change. A title can be present in the catalog without supporting every feature on every platform. If the listing does not show Download or Stream for your account and device, that option is not currently available to you.

Your membership must be active on the PlayStation account you use to start the game. Signing in on a console where another account has Premium does not automatically give your account Premium streaming rights. If a child or family account is using the console, check which account actually holds the subscription and whether the title is available to that account in its region.
Download a Game Catalog game on PS5
Downloading installs the game on the console’s storage. Use the account that owns the Extra or Premium membership and make sure the console is online before opening the catalog. An internet connection is needed to find the catalog and complete the download; after installation, the game runs locally rather than continuously receiving video from the cloud.
- Sign in. Sign in to the PlayStation account with the eligible Extra or Premium membership.
- Open PlayStation Plus. From the PS5 Games home screen, scroll right and select PlayStation Plus.
- Open the catalog. Select the Benefits tab, then choose Game Catalog.
- Select the game. Browse or search for the title. Check its platform, edition and the buttons available on the game page.
- Start the download. Select Download. The PS5 begins installing the game and may show its progress in the downloads area.
- Launch it. When installation finishes, start the game from the Games home screen or from Game Library.
Large games may install in stages, and an icon can appear before all playable content is ready. Let the console complete the required installation and any updates shown in the download queue. If the game page lists both PS4 and PS5 editions, select the edition that matches how you intend to play; the PS5 edition requires PS5 storage and hardware.

- Confirm that the signed-in account, not another family account, holds Extra or Premium.
- Check whether the listing is a PS4 version, a PS5 version, or both. Sony states that PS5 games can only be downloaded to a PlayStation 5 console.
- Look for a regional or catalog-expiration notice. Catalog membership does not guarantee permanent access to every title.
- Check free storage before retrying. A download cannot complete if the console lacks enough space for the game and its updates.
- Verify that you opened the Game Catalog listing rather than a store page for a separately sold edition. The catalog page is where the membership entitlement and available buttons are shown.
Download a Game Catalog game on PS4
The PS4 catalog route uses the function screen rather than the PS5 Games home layout.
- Sign in to the account with the eligible Extra or Premium membership.
- From the PS4 function screen, scroll right and select PlayStation Plus.
- Select Game Catalog.
- Highlight an eligible title and select Download.
- After installation, open the game from the PS4 home screen or library.
A PS4 can download the PS4 version of an eligible game. It cannot download a PS5-only version. When a listing offers several editions, select the edition shown as compatible with your console before starting the installation. If the title has separate PS4 and PS5 entries, seeing the game in the catalog does not mean both versions are included for your hardware.
If the download button changes to a purchase price or is absent, recheck the membership account and the title’s regional listing. A catalog entitlement is different from owning a digital purchase, so the store can show a purchase option even when a different account or region has access through Plus.
Stream a PlayStation Plus game instead of downloading it
Streaming runs the game from Sony’s cloud service and sends the video and audio to your device. It avoids a full local installation, but play quality and responsiveness depend on the connection between your device and the service. Cloud play is a Premium benefit, and only titles marked for streaming can use it.

Streaming on PS4
- From the PS4 function screen, select PlayStation Plus.
- Open Game Catalog.
- Select an eligible title.
- Choose Stream when the option appears.
Supported streaming is also described for PS5, PS4, and PC, but the exact catalog and title availability still depend on region, account, and game. On a PC, use the PlayStation Plus cloud-streaming service where it is offered and select a title that carries the streaming option; the catalog page remains the authority for whether that specific game can start in the cloud.
A PS5-only game may be streamable on a supported device even though its local download is restricted to PS5. Conversely, a game that appears in the catalog may have no cloud option. Rely on the title page’s available option rather than assuming every game behaves the same way.
Internet requirements for cloud streaming
PlayStation Support specifies a minimum broadband speed of 5 Mbps for PlayStation Plus Game Catalog streaming. For 1080p streaming, Sony specifies at least 15 Mbps, and the game must support 1080p. These are connection-speed thresholds, not a guarantee of identical image quality or input response. They are the current figures in PlayStation Support guidance accessed in 2026.
| Use case | Published requirement | What it means |
|---|---|---|
| Game Catalog streaming | At least 5 Mbps broadband | The minimum Sony lists for starting cloud play |
| 1080p streaming | At least 15 Mbps broadband | Required in addition to a game that supports 1080p |
Speed alone is not the only variable. Wi-Fi interference, congestion, latency, packet loss, and other devices using the connection can cause blur, pauses, or delayed controls even when a speed test exceeds the minimum. A speed test taken on a phone in another room may not reflect the connection reaching the console or PC. If your connection is marginal, downloading is generally the more stable choice because gameplay no longer depends on a continuous stream.

The 15 Mbps figure does not force every game to run at 1080p. Sony ties that resolution to both the connection threshold and a game that supports 1080p streaming. A title or device may use a different output when those conditions are not met.

Download or stream: which option fits?
| Factor | Download | Stream |
|---|---|---|
| Local storage | Uses console storage for the game and updates. | Avoids the full local installation. |
| First start | Requires download and installation time before playing. | Can start after the cloud session connects. |
| Connection dependence | Needs internet for the download and any online features, but installed play is not continuously dependent on streaming bandwidth. | Requires a sustained broadband connection for the entire session. |
| Image and controls | Rendered locally, so quality is governed mainly by the console and display. | Can vary with latency, congestion, and packet loss. |
| Device coverage | PS5 games can only be downloaded to PS5; other downloads depend on the listed console version. | Available only for titles and devices marked as stream-compatible. |
| Features while playing | Normal console features are available subject to the game and console. | Several capture, sharing, accessory, and remote features are unavailable. |
| Storage pressure | May require deleting or moving another game to make room for the title and updates. | Useful when internal storage is nearly full because the game files are not installed locally. |
| Network usage | Uses bandwidth mainly during the initial download and updates. | Uses bandwidth continuously for video, audio and control input during play. |
Choose Download when you have storage and want the most consistent local experience, when your connection is unstable, or when you need a feature that streaming blocks. Choose Stream when you have Premium, the title supports cloud play, and you want to start without waiting for an installation or using local storage.
Why you may not be able to stream a game
Your membership is Extra rather than Premium
Extra provides Game Catalog downloads but does not provide the catalog-streaming benefit. Upgrade eligibility is tied to the account currently signed in; having Premium on a different account does not unlock Stream for everyone automatically.
The title is not stream-compatible
Premium does not make every Game Catalog or Classics Catalog title streamable. The absence of a Stream button means the game’s current catalog rights, platform version, or technical support do not offer cloud play for that listing. A title can therefore be downloadable but not streamable, or streamable without offering a local download on the device you are using.

The game or feature is restricted in your region
Catalog contents and rights vary by country or region. Two accounts can see different titles or different buttons for the same game. Use the listing shown for your own account and location as the authoritative check rather than relying on a friend’s catalog or an old screenshot.
The service has a queue
Cloud capacity can place a title in a queue before play begins. A queue is a service-capacity condition, not proof that your console or controller is defective. Waiting, trying again later, or downloading the game (if offered) are the available alternatives.
Your connection is below the requirement
Streaming requires at least 5 Mbps broadband, while Sony lists 15 Mbps for 1080p when the game supports that resolution. Test the connection on the device you are using, pause competing downloads or video streams, and move from congested Wi-Fi to a more reliable connection if possible.
The catalog entry changed
Games can leave the catalog or lose a particular version or streaming option. If a title worked previously but the button has disappeared, open the current listing and check its membership, region, platform and availability notices.

Sony lists several features and accessories as unsupported during PlayStation Plus streaming:
- Broadcasting
- Share Play
- Share Screen
- Remote Play
- HD Camera or PlayStation Camera
- Mouse and keyboard
- PlayStation VR
- PlayStation Move
- Third-party controllers
These restrictions apply to the streaming session, even if the same feature works when a game is downloaded and running locally. Use a supported PlayStation controller and plan to play without broadcasting, sharing, remote access, or the listed peripherals. If a game depends on VR, Move, a camera, mouse and keyboard, or a third-party controller, check for a downloadable version before committing to cloud play.
How catalog access changes over time
A Game Catalog membership is a subscription entitlement, not a purchase of each included game. You can play an included title while your qualifying membership is active and the game remains available in your region. Sony can change the catalog, remove titles, or change which versions support streaming.
Before downloading a large game, open its listing and verify:
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute- The title is included for your account’s region and membership.
- The desired PS4 or PS5 version is shown.
- Download appears for your console if you plan to install it.
- Stream appears if you plan to use cloud play.
- You have enough free storage for the download and updates.
- The game does not require a streaming-incompatible accessory for the way you intend to play.
If a game leaves the catalog, the installed files do not turn the subscription license into a permanent purchase. Access depends on the game’s continued catalog entitlement and your qualifying membership. Renewing a membership can restore access to titles that are still included, but it does not restore a title that has been removed or a version that is no longer offered in your region.

Troubleshooting checklist
The catalog or game page will not load
- Verify that the console is connected to the internet.
- Confirm you are signed in to the account with Extra or Premium.
- Open PlayStation Plus again from the console’s current home or function screen and return to Game Catalog.
- Check whether the service is asking you to renew or select a membership.
- Return to the title page and check whether a region, platform or catalog notice explains the missing option.
Download starts but will not finish
- Check available console storage and remove or move content if necessary.
- Review the download status for an error message.
- Confirm the console remains connected and retry after a temporary network interruption.
- Check that you selected a version compatible with the console.
- Allow room for updates in addition to the initial game files; the listing’s installation size is not always the only space the console needs.
Stream starts with poor quality or lag
- Check that broadband is at least 5 Mbps; target 15 Mbps for 1080p streaming when supported by the game.
- Stop other high-bandwidth activity on the same connection.
- Use a more stable network connection and avoid areas with weak Wi-Fi coverage.
- End the session and retry if the service reports a queue or temporary capacity problem.
- If the title offers Download, install it to compare local play with the cloud session.
A controller or accessory does not work while streaming
First-party or console-supported accessories can still be affected by streaming’s feature restrictions. In particular, Sony does not support third-party controllers, mouse, keyboard, PSVR, PlayStation Move, cameras, or the sharing and remote features listed above during a streaming session. Download the game instead when you need those capabilities and the title offers a local version.
Quick decision guide
- Do you have Extra or Premium? If not, Game Catalog access is unavailable.
- Does the listing show Download? Select it for local installation on a compatible console.
- Does it show Stream and do you have Premium? Confirm the title is supported and your connection reaches Sony’s threshold.
- Do you need sharing, VR, mouse and keyboard, Remote Play, or another restricted feature? Use a download when available.
- Is storage limited or do you want to start quickly? Stream when the title, device, region, and connection support it.
- Is the game PS5-only? Download it only on PS5; use streaming on a supported device if the listing provides that option.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I play a PlayStation Plus Game Catalog game without downloading it?
Yes, if you have Premium, the title supports cloud play, and the listing shows Stream. Streaming starts the game from Sony’s service and requires at least 5 Mbps broadband; 1080p streaming requires at least 15 Mbps and a game that supports 1080p.
Do I need Extra or Premium to download Game Catalog games?
You need an active Extra or Premium membership. Essential does not include the Game Catalog. Sign in to the account that holds the qualifying membership.
Recommended Free Tools
Why is there no Stream button even though I have Premium?
Premium does not make every catalog title streamable. The game may not support cloud play, may have different regional rights, or may offer streaming only on certain platform versions. The current title listing is the deciding check.
Can I download a PS5 game to a PS4?
No. Sony states that PS5 games can only be downloaded to a PS5 console. A PS4 can download only an eligible PS4 version. If a PS5-only game offers streaming, use that option on a supported device.
What internet speed does PlayStation Plus streaming require?
Sony lists 5 Mbps broadband as the minimum for Game Catalog streaming. For 1080p streaming, Sony lists at least 15 Mbps and requires a game that supports 1080p.
Why is cloud play waiting in a queue?
A queue indicates current cloud-service capacity. Wait and retry later, or choose Download if the title offers a local installation.
Can I broadcast or use Share Play while streaming?
No. Sony lists broadcasting, Share Play, Share Screen and Remote Play as unsupported during PlayStation Plus streaming.
Do mouse, keyboard, VR or third-party controllers work while streaming?
Sony lists mouse, keyboard, PSVR, PlayStation Move, cameras and third-party controllers as unsupported during streaming. Download the game when available if you need those accessories.
What happens if a game leaves the Game Catalog after I download it?
Downloading does not turn the subscription title into a permanent purchase. Access depends on an active qualifying membership and the game remaining available in your region.
Can I stream PlayStation Plus games on a PC?
Sony describes supported catalog streaming on PC as well as PS4 and PS5. Use the PC PlayStation Plus streaming service where offered and select a title whose listing includes Stream; availability varies by region and game.
The Bottom Line
Use Extra or Premium to download eligible Game Catalog games, following the PS5 or PS4 path for your console. Premium is required for cloud streaming, and the title must show Stream. Sony’s current guidance sets 5 Mbps as the minimum streaming speed and 15 Mbps for 1080p when supported. Download for local stability, storage permitting; stream when you want to avoid installation and your title, device, region, membership and connection all qualify.
