If you are looking for a Silverlight installer for Windows 11 or Windows 10, the important answer is that there is no current, supported Microsoft installation path. Microsoft ended Silverlight support on October 12, 2021, and Silverlight 5 is no longer maintained.
Installing an old runtime, if you already have a trusted copy, does not make modern Chrome, Firefox, or ordinary Microsoft Edge compatible with Silverlight. For a legacy business or intranet application, the only Microsoft-documented workaround identified in current support material is to try the site in Microsoft Edge Internet Explorer mode. Even that is not a guaranteed or supported Silverlight platform.
Can you install Silverlight on Windows 11 or Windows 10?
Not as a currently supported Microsoft platform. Silverlight 5 started its lifecycle on December 9, 2011, and reached its end date on October 12, 2021. Microsoft no longer provides normal Silverlight support, a maintained runtime, or a current supported installation workflow for Windows 10 or Windows 11.
Windows 10 reaching its own end of support on October 14, 2025 does not extend Silverlight support. A Windows 10 computer may continue to run, but Microsoft no longer supplies normal operating-system security updates or technical support for it. Silverlight remains discontinued on both Windows versions.

| Is there a current Microsoft Silverlight download? | No supported current download or installation workflow is provided by Microsoft. |
| Does Silverlight work in Chrome? | No. Modern Chrome does not support the Silverlight browser plugin. |
| Does Silverlight work in Firefox? | No. Microsoft ended Firefox support for Silverlight. |
| Can ordinary Edge enable Silverlight with a plugin switch? | No current Microsoft documentation identifies such a switch. |
| Can IE mode help? | It may load some legacy plugin-based content, but it does not guarantee that a Silverlight application will work. |
Why the old Silverlight download page does not work
Older instructions commonly send users to Microsoft’s Silverlight download page, sometimes with an address such as:
https://www.microsoft.com/getsilverlight/get-started/install/default?reason=unsupportedbrowser&_helpmsg=ChromeVersionDoesNotSupportPlugins#sysreq
That page relied on browser detection and an unsupportedbrowser condition. In current browsers, the old download path may return a 404 or otherwise fail to provide an installer. This is not a browser setting that you can fix by refreshing the page; it reflects Silverlight’s discontinued status.
Do not download Silverlight from mirror sites
Do not solve the missing Microsoft download by searching for a random Silverlight.exe or downloading one from a software mirror. An old installer from an unverified source can be modified, bundled with unwanted software, or replaced with malware. Because Microsoft does not provide a current supported installer, there is no reliable reason to treat an unofficial copy as safe.
If you are supporting a genuine legacy application, ask the application owner or your organization’s IT team for the original installer and its documented checksums or software-distribution package. Keep that software in an isolated, managed environment and do not install an unknown executable on a personal or production computer.
Try the legacy application in Edge Internet Explorer mode
Microsoft support material identifies Internet Explorer mode in Edge as a possible workaround for some legacy plugin-based sites. It is not a reinstatement of Silverlight support, and Microsoft does not promise that every Silverlight application will load.
- Open Microsoft Edge.
- Select the three-dot menu in the upper-right corner and choose Settings.
- Open Default browser.
- Under Internet Explorer compatibility, find the option for the IE Mode pages list.
- Add the complete URL of the legacy application.
- Restart or reload the page as Edge requests, then open the URL again.
Depending on your Windows edition and organization policy, the exact labels or available controls may differ. A work-managed computer may also require an administrator to configure IE mode through policy.

What IE mode can and cannot tell you
- It can: provide a compatibility environment for some older web content and legacy document modes.
- It cannot: download a missing Silverlight runtime, make Chrome or Firefox support plugins, or guarantee that a Silverlight application will function.
- A successful page load is not proof of support: the application may still fail when it tries to initialize the Silverlight runtime, access a service, authenticate, or use an obsolete security component.
If you already have a legitimate legacy installer
If your organization already owns and controls an original Silverlight installer, the safest course is to follow the application vendor’s documented deployment procedure rather than generic internet instructions. Before testing it:
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →- Verify where the installer came from and, if available, compare its hash with the vendor’s published hash.
- Test on a non-production machine or virtual machine.
- Confirm that the application owner still operates the required server, authentication system, certificates, and backend services.
- Use a separate Windows account with the minimum permissions needed.
- Prevent the test system from handling sensitive data unless your security team has approved the setup.
- Remove the runtime and retire the test environment when the legacy application is no longer required.
Running the installer as administrator or using Windows compatibility settings may change whether an old installer starts. It does not create browser-plugin support, make Silverlight secure, or restore Microsoft support. There is also no Microsoft source confirming Silverlight as a supported Windows 11 solution.
Better options than Silverlight
If you own the application, migration is the durable fix. Silverlight applications are normally replaced with a modern web application using current browser technologies, or with a maintained desktop application where browser access is not appropriate. The migration plan may need to cover:
- user authentication and single sign-on;
- file upload, printing, and local-device integration;
- media playback and graphics;
- offline behavior and data storage;
- backend APIs and certificate requirements;
- accessibility and support for current browsers.
If you only use a third-party service, contact its provider and ask for a current version or an official migration route. A provider that still requires Silverlight may have a supported remote-access or virtual-desktop arrangement, but that should come from the provider or your IT department—not from an unofficial installer guide.
Common instructions that are no longer valid
| Old instruction | Why it is unreliable now |
|---|---|
| “Download Silverlight from Microsoft and install it in Chrome.” | Microsoft ended Chrome plugin support, and the old download page is no longer a current supported route. |
| “Enable Silverlight in Firefox.” | Firefox no longer supports the Silverlight plugin. |
| “Turn on the Silverlight plugin in Edge.” | Current Microsoft guidance points to IE mode, not a general Silverlight toggle in ordinary Edge. |
| “Run the installer as administrator on Windows 11.” | Administrative privileges do not restore a discontinued runtime or browser compatibility. |
| “Use a mirror because Microsoft removed the download.” | Unverified installers create malware and supply-chain risks. |
Practical conclusion
You cannot download and use Silverlight on Windows 10 or Windows 11 as a currently supported Microsoft setup. Silverlight ended in 2021, modern browsers do not provide ordinary plugin support, and Microsoft does not offer a current supported installer.

For a required legacy site, try adding its URL under Microsoft Edge > Settings > Default browser > Internet Explorer compatibility and testing it with IE mode. Treat that as a limited compatibility experiment, not a supported Silverlight installation. For anything that handles business or personal data, the safer long-term choices are a vendor-provided replacement, a controlled legacy environment approved by IT, or migration to a modern application.

FAQ
Is Silverlight available for Windows 11?
No current, supported Silverlight release is available for Windows 11. Microsoft ended Silverlight support on October 12, 2021, and does not document Windows 11 as a supported Silverlight platform.
Is Silverlight available for Windows 10?
There is no currently supported Silverlight installation path for Windows 10. Windows 10 itself reached end of support on October 14, 2025, but that does not extend or restore Silverlight support.
Why does the Silverlight download page show a 404?
The old Microsoft download page depended on browser detection and was designed for a discontinued product. The old path may now return 404 or fail to provide an installer in current browsers.

Ordinary Edge does not provide a current Silverlight plugin switch. Microsoft identifies Edge Internet Explorer mode as a possible workaround for some legacy plugin-based content, but it does not guarantee that a Silverlight application will work.
Does Silverlight work in Chrome or Firefox?
No. Microsoft stated that Chrome and Firefox no longer supported Silverlight, and modern versions of both browsers do not support the plugin.
Where can I safely download an old Silverlight installer?
Do not use an unverified mirror or random download site. Microsoft does not provide a current supported installer. If you need a legacy deployment, obtain the original package from your application vendor or organization’s IT department and verify its provenance.
The Bottom Line
Bottom line: Silverlight is permanently out of support and cannot be installed and used on Windows 10 or Windows 11 as a supported Microsoft platform. Do not rely on Chrome, Firefox, compatibility mode, or unofficial download sites. For a necessary legacy application, test its URL with Edge Internet Explorer mode or use an IT-approved legacy environment, then plan a migration to a supported application.
