To install Red Dead Redemption 2 on a Windows PC, use the library of the storefront where you bought it. A Rockstar Store purchase is installed through Rockstar Games Launcher with the Rockstar Games Social Club account tied to that purchase. Steam and other storefront purchases are installed through their own clients. Check the PC specifications and free disk space first: the published requirement is 150 GB, and the minimum hardware is not a promise of a particular frame rate.
Check the purchase and edition before downloading
A digital license belongs to the storefront account used to buy it. Buying the game on one storefront does not automatically create a license in another storefront’s library, even though the PC versions use Rockstar services. Open the same account and client you used at checkout before looking for an install option.
| Choice | What it contains or means | Where installation starts |
|---|---|---|
| Rockstar Store: Red Dead Redemption 2 | The standard PC listing includes Story Mode and Red Dead Online. | Rockstar Games Launcher, after signing in to the associated Social Club account. |
| Rockstar Store: Ultimate Edition | Includes the base game plus the additional Ultimate Edition content shown on the store page. Check the listing for the exact contents before purchasing. | Rockstar Games Launcher. |
| Rockstar Store: Red Dead Online | A standalone listing for the online component rather than the full Story Mode package. | Rockstar Games Launcher. |
| Steam or another authorized PC storefront | The license, purchase history, refund rules and download workflow are controlled by that storefront. Edition contents can differ, so read the listing carefully. | The storefront’s own desktop client and library. |
Prices, regional availability and edition promotions change. Confirm the platform label, included modes and the account that will receive the license at the time of purchase; do not rely on an old price or an old retailer list.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsConfirm that your PC meets the published requirements
Rockstar’s PC store page publishes the following baseline. The figures describe supported configurations, not a guaranteed frame rate, resolution or graphics preset. Rockstar also warns that downloadable content and programming changes can alter requirements and that some integrated or otherwise unlisted hardware may not be supported.

Steam’s support listing repeats the operating-system, processor, memory, graphics and 150 GB figures and additionally lists broadband internet and a DirectX-compatible sound device. The Rockstar Store page requires internet access for activation, online play and periodic entitlement verification, so an offline-only setup is not supported.
How to check your specifications in Windows
- Press
Windows+R, entermsinfo32, and press Enter. The System Information window shows the Windows edition, processor and installed physical memory. - Open
dxdiagfrom the same Run box to inspect the operating system, processor, memory, graphics adapter and DirectX information. The exact display-driver details appear on the Display tab. - In File Explorer, open This PC and inspect the target drive’s free space. It must have at least 150 GB available before installation; keeping additional working room is sensible because launchers may need temporary files and Windows needs space for updates.
Compare the model names and video-memory amounts, not just a GPU family name. If your hardware is integrated, unusually old, mobile-specific or missing from the published list, check the current Rockstar Support guidance and the GPU manufacturer’s compatibility information before buying or downloading.
Prepare accounts, network access and Windows
- Have the storefront account used for the purchase ready. For a Rockstar Store license, also have the Rockstar Games Social Club credentials associated with it.
- Use a stable internet connection for the initial download, activation and entitlement checks. Online play continues to require connectivity.
- Sign in to Windows with an account that can install desktop software and write to the chosen game drive.
- Close applications that consume large amounts of bandwidth or disk activity while the game downloads.
- Use only the official launcher, storefront client and support pages. Do not download launchers, redistributables or replacement DLL files from unofficial sites.
The Rockstar Store page lists supporting components including DirectX, Microsoft Visual C++ 2015–2019 Redistributables (x64), Chromium Embedded Framework, Social Club Framework and authentication software. The official installer handles the components it needs; avoid manually substituting versions from download sites.

Download and install the Rockstar Store edition
The labels and layout in Rockstar Games Launcher can change, so use the current wording shown in your client rather than relying on a screenshot. The sequence remains the same.
- Open the official route. Start from the official Red Dead Redemption 2 PC game page or Rockstar’s Downloads page. Select the Rockstar Games Launcher download if it is not already installed.
- Install or update the launcher. Run the installer, accept the license terms, choose the requested Windows installation location and allow it to finish. Restart the launcher if it requests an update.
- Sign in to Social Club. Enter the Rockstar Games Social Club account that owns the purchase. A different account can make the game appear unowned even when the purchase was completed successfully.
- Open your library. Find Red Dead Redemption 2 in the launcher library. If more than one edition or product is listed, select the edition you bought.
- Start installation. Choose the install control shown for the game. Select a drive with at least 150 GB free, review the destination and begin the download. The launcher may download a large initial package and then apply updates.
- Leave the launcher signed in. Do not close the client, put the computer to sleep or interrupt the network during installation unless you are prepared to resume the download. Progress should continue from the launcher’s library when connectivity returns.
- Complete prerequisites. Permit the official installer to add the listed runtime and framework components if Windows asks for confirmation. Declining them can prevent the game or launcher from starting.
- Launch from the owning client. Use the launch control in Rockstar Games Launcher for the first run. The game may perform an activation or entitlement check before showing the main menu.
Activation is not a one-time replacement for the account: Rockstar states that periodic entitlement verification is required. Keep the Social Club credentials available when changing Windows installations, replacing a drive or signing in on another PC.
Install a Steam or other storefront purchase
For a Steam purchase, begin in Steam rather than trying to claim the game in the Rockstar Store. The same principle applies to another authorized retailer: use the client and library that delivered the license.

- Printed on Highest Quality Poster Paper.
- Poster measures 16" x 24" inches
- Install and sign in to the storefront’s current Windows client.
- Open Library and select the account’s Red Dead Redemption 2 entry. If it is missing, verify that you are using the purchasing account and that the transaction completed.
- Choose the client’s install command, select a library drive with at least 150 GB free, and confirm the download location.
- Allow the storefront to download the game and any queued updates. Keep the client open until its status reports completion.
- Start the game from that library. The first launch can also install or open Rockstar Games Launcher and request a Social Club sign-in because Rockstar services are used for activation and online features.
Storefronts can differ in cloud saves, purchase history, account linking, refund handling and installation prompts. Follow the current prompts in the client that owns the license. Historical release information identified Steam availability as beginning in December 2019 and named several other digital retailers; that history does not guarantee present-day regional stock, pricing or a specific retailer’s support policy.
What to expect on the first launch
Activation and account linking
The Rockstar Store edition requires Rockstar Games Launcher and a login to Rockstar Games Social Club for installation and activation. A Steam or other storefront copy may open Rockstar’s services during its first run as well. Enter the account that owns the entitlement, not a second Social Club account created for testing.
Graphics and performance settings
Meeting the minimum table permits the game to be installed on the published baseline; it does not establish a particular frame rate or visual preset. Start with the game’s detected settings, then adjust resolution, texture quality and other options while watching frame-time consistency. If the hardware is close to minimum, lower demanding settings before increasing image quality. Keep graphics-driver software obtained from the GPU maker current and consult Rockstar Support when a specific error or crash appears.

Online access
Story Mode and Red Dead Online are separate components of the standard edition, but activation and periodic entitlement checks still require internet access. Online play needs connectivity after installation, and a temporary outage can prevent an entitlement check even when the files are intact.
Check the installation before troubleshooting
- Confirm that the launcher or storefront reports the download as complete rather than queued, paused or awaiting an update.
- Check the installed drive again; a nearly full disk can stop patching even after the original 150 GB check passed.
- Start the game from the library that owns the license. Launching an executable copied from another PC does not transfer ownership.
- Record the exact storefront, launcher, Social Club account, error text and stage at which the failure occurs. Those details determine which support path applies.
Fix common download, activation and launch problems
The game is not in the library
Sign out and back in to the account used for purchase, then check the order or transaction history in that same storefront. Confirm that you bought the PC edition and selected the correct edition rather than standalone Red Dead Online. Do not purchase again until the account and platform have been verified.

Check the target drive’s free space, network connection and whether the client is waiting for another update. Restart the owning launcher and resume from its library. If the problem persists, use the storefront’s current download or connectivity support article; avoid replacing launcher files with copies from third-party sites.
Activation or Social Club sign-in fails
Verify that the internet connection is working and that the sign-in is for the account holding the entitlement. Rockstar requires internet for activation and periodic verification. Note the exact message and whether it appears in the storefront, Rockstar Games Launcher or the game, then use the matching purchase or activation category in Rockstar Support.
The game crashes during startup
Identify whether the crash occurs before the game window, while loading a save or after entering the world. Check that the PC is within the published operating-system, CPU, memory and GPU baselines and that Windows has sufficient free disk space for updates. Rockstar Support lists dedicated guidance for the ERR_GFX_STATE crash (published May 2, 2024) and the FFFFFFFF error (published July 26, 2024); use those current articles when the exact code matches instead of applying unrelated fixes.
You need a current requirements answer
Rockstar’s support hub includes a system-requirements article dated April 30, 2024, while the store page warns that requirements can change. Use the current support article and your hardware manufacturer’s information when your Windows version or components are newer, integrated or not listed.

You need help with a different problem
The Rockstar Support hub groups Red Dead Redemption 2 help by purchase, activation, performance, connectivity, online play, error codes and how-to topics. Choose the category that matches the failure and include the storefront, launcher version if shown, exact error text and the step that failed. An April 8, 2026 PC achievements update listed in the hub concerns achievements, not installation instructions.
Reinstalling or changing the installation drive
To reinstall, uninstall through the same storefront or Rockstar Games Launcher that owns the license, then start a fresh installation from its library. Before removing files, back up personal saves according to the storefront’s current save-system guidance and make sure you can sign in again. When selecting a new drive, check the full 150 GB requirement and leave room for Windows and future game updates. A reinstall does not remove the need for Social Club authentication or periodic entitlement verification.
