There is no verified permanent free download of GTA: San Andreas for Windows 10 from Rockstar. Rockstar’s current store listing is for Grand Theft Auto: The Trilogy – The Definitive Edition, priced at $59.99 and containing GTA III, Vice City, and San Andreas. It has a Buy Now button, not a current free-download offer.
You can download the game without making a new purchase only if your Rockstar, Xbox/Game Pass, or other supported account already has an entitlement. The steps below explain how to identify the edition you have and install it safely.
Before you download: identify the edition
“GTA San Andreas PC” can refer to two different products. Their requirements and installation methods are not interchangeable.
| Edition | How it is sold | Minimum requirements listed by Rockstar |
|---|---|---|
| Original PC release | Legacy PC product supported by Rockstar Games Launcher | Windows 10 64-bit, 1 GHz Intel Pentium or AMD Athlon, 256 MB RAM, 64 MB DirectX 9 graphics, DirectX 9, and 4.7 GB storage |
| San Andreas – The Definitive Edition | Included in Grand Theft Auto: The Trilogy – The Definitive Edition | Windows 10 64-bit, Intel Core i5-6600K or AMD FX-6300, 8 GB RAM, GTX 760 2 GB or Radeon R9 280 3 GB, and 45 GB storage |
The original game’s 4.7 GB and 256 MB figures do not describe the remastered Definitive Edition. The Definitive Edition needs substantially more storage and a much newer graphics card.
#1 Best Overall
- Grand Theft Auto III: It all starts in Liberty City. With the revolutionary freedom to go anywhere and jack anyone, Grand Theft Auto III puts the center of the criminal underworld at your fingertips, if you have enough guts to take it.
- Grand Theft Auto: Vice City: Welcome to the 1980s. From the decade of big hair and pastel suits comes the story of one man's rise to the top of the criminal pile.
- Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas: Five years ago, Carl 'CJ' Johnson escaped the haze of Los Santos, San Andreas...a city tearing itself apart with gang trouble, drugs, and corruption.
Is GTA San Andreas free on PC?
Not as a current, permanent Rockstar giveaway. Rockstar has a support page for the old free-offer claim that reports the message “This feature is not currently available”. That page does not document an active giveaway or provide a method for restoring one.
Do not download an installer from a website promising a “full free version,” crack, key generator, or torrent. Apart from copyright and licensing issues, these packages commonly contain modified executables, unwanted installers, password stealers, or ransomware. A free Rockstar Games Launcher download is legitimate; a free, unlicensed copy of the game is not.
Method 1: install a game you already own through Rockstar Games Launcher
This is the standard route for a Rockstar entitlement. The launcher itself is free, but installing it does not give an account ownership of San Andreas.
- Download Rockstar Games Launcher from Rockstar’s official launcher page.
- Run the installer and complete the setup.
- Open Rockstar Games Launcher and sign in to the Rockstar Games account that owns the game. If necessary, create an account and verify its email address.
- Open Library. If San Andreas is attached to the account, it will appear as an installable title.
- Select the game, choose Install, select an installation location with enough free space, and allow the download to finish.
- Choose Play. The launcher may require internet access for sign-in, activation, and periodic entitlement verification.
Rockstar lists the original Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas among the PC titles supported by its launcher. If the game is missing from Library, check that you signed in with the account used for the purchase or redeemed code. Reinstalling the launcher will not transfer ownership between accounts.
Rank #2
- Grand Theft Auto III: It all starts in Liberty City. With the revolutionary freedom to go anywhere and jack anyone, Grand Theft Auto III puts the center of the criminal underworld at your fingertips, if you have enough guts to take it.
- Grand Theft Auto: Vice City: Welcome to the 1980s. From the decade of big hair and pastel suits comes the story of one man's rise to the top of the criminal pile. Grand Theft Auto returns with Tommy Vercetti’s tale of betrayal and revenge in a neon-soaked tropical town full of excess and brimming with possibilities.
- Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas: Five years ago, Carl ‘CJ’ Johnson escaped the haze of Los Santos, San Andreas...a city tearing itself apart with gang trouble, drugs, and corruption. Now, it's the early 90s. CJ’s got to go home - his mother has been murdered, his family has fallen apart, and his childhood friends are all heading towards disaster.
Method 2: use an existing GTA+ or library entitlement
Rockstar says PC GTA+ members can access the PC titles currently included in the rotating GTA+ Games Library through Rockstar Games Launcher. The selection can change, so do not assume that San Andreas is always included.
- Open Rockstar Games Launcher and sign in to the account with the active qualifying subscription.
- Open the GTA+ Games Library or the launcher’s game library.
- Check whether the specific San Andreas edition is currently listed for your account.
- Select Install and follow the launcher’s prompts.
If the title is not listed, an active GTA+ subscription alone does not prove that you can install it. Check Rockstar’s current library page and the account’s subscription status rather than using a third-party download.
Method 3: install through Xbox PC/Game Pass when available
When the supported Rockstar title is available to your Xbox PC or Game Pass account, use the Xbox app rather than downloading a separate installer from an unofficial site. Rockstar account linking is required.
- Open the Xbox app on Windows.
- Select Game Pass and search for the supported Rockstar title.
- Select the game and choose Install. If it is already installed, select Play.
- Install Rockstar Games Launcher if Xbox prompts you to do so.
- Sign in to Rockstar Games Launcher.
- When prompted, select Link Account and choose whether to enable cloud saves.
- Return to the Xbox app and start the game.
If you cancel the linking screen, restarting the launcher may not reopen the process. Return to the Xbox PC app and select Play again. This restarts the linking flow.

Buying the current PC version
If you do not already have an entitlement, the official current package is Grand Theft Auto: The Trilogy – The Definitive Edition. Rockstar’s store page lists it at $59.99 and includes the Definitive Editions of GTA III, Vice City, and San Andreas.
- Open the official Rockstar Store listing.
- Confirm that the page shows the edition and price you intend to buy.
- Select Buy Now and complete checkout.
- Sign in to the Rockstar account that made the purchase.
- Open Rockstar Games Launcher, go to Library, select the Trilogy, and choose Install.
This is the remastered product, not the legacy original PC release. Check the higher Definitive Edition requirements before buying.
Fix “This feature is not currently available”
If you are trying to claim the old free offer and see this message, the error is not evidence that a hidden download is waiting elsewhere. Rockstar’s support article documents the unavailable feature and directs users to its Terms of Service; it does not describe a current free entitlement or an official workaround.
Recommended Free Tools
Close the claim page, check your Rockstar account’s Library, and use one of the legitimate entitlement routes above. Avoid launchers or websites that claim they can bypass the message.

FAQ
Can I download GTA San Andreas for free on Windows 10?
There is no verified current permanent free Rockstar download. You can install it without a new purchase only if your account already has an eligible game entitlement or the title is currently available through a qualifying subscription library.
Is the old Rockstar free offer still active?
Rockstar’s support page for that offer reports “This feature is not currently available.” It does not document an active giveaway.
What is the difference between the original game and Definitive Edition?
The original PC release is the legacy version with a listed 4.7 GB storage requirement and 256 MB RAM minimum. The Definitive Edition is the remastered version in the Trilogy package and requires 45 GB storage and 8 GB RAM minimum.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Why is San Andreas not visible in Rockstar Games Launcher?
You may be using a different Rockstar account, the purchase may belong to another platform account, or the title may not be included in your current subscription library. Check the account used for purchase and the current GTA+ library.
Do I need a Rockstar Games account to install the PC version?
Yes. Rockstar requires account sign-in for activation and entitlement verification. Internet access is also required during relevant account and licensing checks.
Can I fix the Windows compatibility error with a command?
Rockstar’s documented fix is graphical: open the shortcut or game executable’s Properties, go to Compatibility, clear “Run this program in compatibility mode for,” then apply the change.
The Bottom Line
Bottom line: download the Rockstar Games Launcher only from Rockstar, then install San Andreas from Library if your account already owns it or has a current eligible entitlement. Otherwise, the official current PC purchase is Grand Theft Auto: The Trilogy – The Definitive Edition; third-party “free download” installers are not legitimate replacements.
