On Windows 11, balenaEtcher is available for Intel 64-bit PCs through the official Windows installer. The current GitHub release is balenaEtcher v2.1.6, released May 13, 2026. It can write bootable Linux, Raspberry Pi, and other compatible image files to USB drives and SD cards.

Etcher is not a general-purpose Windows installation-media creator: its FAQ says Windows images need additional treatment that Etcher does not perform. Also, flashing erases the selected drive, so check the target carefully before starting.

Check whether your Windows 11 PC is supported

The current project support information lists Windows 10 and later on Intel 64-bit systems. That includes standard Intel and AMD-based Windows 11 computers. The supported-OS list does not identify a separate ARM64 Windows installer.

To check your system type, open Settings > System > About and look at System type. A typical compatible PC reports an x64-based processor.

Download Etcher from the official source

  1. Open the official balenaEtcher website.
  2. Select Download Etcher.
  3. Choose the Windows download if the site presents multiple platform options.
  4. Save the installer, then open your browser’s Downloads list or the folder where the file was saved.

For version 2.1.6, the Windows installer is named balenaEtcher-2.1.6 Setup.exe and is approximately 191 MB. The release page also lists a separate portable archive named balenaEtcher-win32-x64-2.1.6.zip; do not confuse that archive with the normal setup executable.

Optional: verify the installer checksum

If you downloaded the v2.1.6 setup file from another approved mirror or want to check its integrity, compare its SHA-256 value with the release listing. In PowerShell, change the path if necessary and run:

Get-FileHash "$env:USERPROFILEDownloadsbalenaEtcher-2.1.6 Setup.exe" -Algorithm SHA256

The expected v2.1.6 value is:

78d1c45a55428e65ab2ac96e462ad6d77adbf7d1c0aa4b704b214bc00e1fcdfc

Do not install the file if the calculated value does not match the release page.

Install Etcher with the Windows installer

  1. Double-click balenaEtcher-2.1.6 Setup.exe.
  2. If Windows displays a security or administrator-permission prompt, confirm that you want to run the installer only if the file came from the official balenaEtcher download or the verified release.
  3. Follow the prompts shown by the installer.
  4. When setup finishes, open Etcher from the Start menu or from the shortcut created by the installer, if one was offered.

The exact wizard pages, button text, installation folder, and shortcut options can change between releases, so follow the labels shown by your copy rather than relying on a fixed sequence of screen names.

Install Etcher with Chocolatey

On a PC that already has Chocolatey configured, run PowerShell or Command Prompt as appropriate and enter:

choco install etcher

Chocolatey downloads and installs the package through its normal package-management process. Use the official installer instead if Chocolatey is not already installed; adding a package manager solely for Etcher is unnecessary.

Flash an image to a USB drive or SD card

Etcher’s workflow has three main stages: choose the image, choose the target, and flash it.

  1. Insert the USB drive or SD card. Close File Explorer windows or applications that are using it.
  2. Start Etcher.
  3. Select the option to choose an image, then open the downloaded image file. This may be an ISO, IMG, or another format supported by the image.
  4. Select the target drive. Compare its name and capacity with the physical USB drive or card you inserted.
  5. Start the flash operation and approve the warning.
  6. Wait for writing and verification to finish before removing the media.

You do not need to format the USB drive or SD card first. Etcher erases the selected target and replaces its contents. Formatting it beforehand neither protects its data nor prevents the later erase.

Before flashing Why it matters
Check the drive capacity A 64 GB card should not appear as a 1 TB internal disk.
Back up the target Existing files and partitions will be overwritten.
Disconnect unrelated removable drives Fewer similar-looking targets means less risk of selecting the wrong device.
Use a reliable adapter and USB port Faulty adapters and ports are common causes of failed flashes.

Important limits and safety warnings

Etcher hides system drives, but verify the target anyway

Etcher warns about drives and hides system drives by default to reduce the chance of overwriting your Windows disk. That is a safeguard, not a guarantee. The target you select is still erased. Confirm the drive’s capacity and description immediately before starting the flash.

It is not the right tool for a Windows 11 installer USB

Do not assume that selecting a Windows ISO in Etcher will create a working Windows installation USB. Etcher’s official FAQ says Windows images are not bootable without extra treatment that Etcher is not designed to perform. Use a Microsoft-supported Windows-media method for a Windows installation drive instead.

Etcher can create bootable media when the image itself is bootable, such as many Linux or single-board-computer images.

Do not remove the drive during verification

A progress bar reaching the end does not necessarily mean the operation is complete. Leave the drive connected until Etcher finishes writing and verification and reports the result.

Troubleshoot a failed Etcher flash

The official troubleshooting guidance identifies a faulty drive or adapter as the most common cause. Work through these tests:

  1. Retry the flash once.
  2. Use a different USB port, preferably a direct port rather than an unpowered hub.
  3. Replace the USB adapter, card reader, or SD adapter.
  4. Try another USB drive or SD card.
  5. Download the image again if the local file may be incomplete or damaged.

If you are flashing from a URL and the operation fails, download the image file to Windows first and select the local file in Etcher instead.

A failed or half-completed flash can leave the media in a state that File Explorer or graphical disk tools cannot easily restore. If Windows no longer shows the expected capacity or partitions, use a dedicated, fail-proof erase procedure rather than repeatedly formatting at random. Make absolutely certain you identify the removable disk before running any disk-erasing command.

Uninstall Etcher

Remove a WinGet installation

Open PowerShell or Windows Terminal and run:

winget uninstall balenaEtcher

Remove a Chocolatey installation

Run:

choco uninstall etcher

If you used the graphical installer, remove Etcher through Settings > Apps > Installed apps. Search for Etcher, select its menu button, and choose the uninstall option shown by Windows.

What changed regarding analytics?

Older articles may claim that Etcher necessarily includes analytics. The v2.1.2 changelog includes “remove analytics” and links to balena’s privacy announcement. That older description should not be presented as the behavior of current Etcher releases.

FAQ

Is Etcher free to install on Windows 11?

The official balenaEtcher project provides Windows installers and documents installation through WinGet and Chocolatey. Download the installer from the official Etcher site or use the documented package commands rather than an unofficial download site.

Does Etcher support Windows 11?

Yes. The current support information lists Windows 10 and later on Intel 64-bit systems, which includes Windows 11 on compatible x64 PCs. A separate ARM64 Windows installer is not identified in the current supported-OS list.

Do I need to format a USB drive before using Etcher?

No. Etcher does not require pre-formatting. It erases the selected drive and replaces its contents during flashing.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Can Etcher create a bootable Windows 11 USB?

Not as a generally supported Etcher workflow. Etcher’s FAQ says Windows images need additional treatment that Etcher does not perform. Use a Microsoft-supported method for Windows installation media.

Why did Etcher fail to flash my SD card?

The most likely causes are a faulty card, adapter, card reader, or USB port. Retry, then test another adapter, drive or card, and port. If the image came from a URL, download it locally and flash the local file.

What is the current Windows Etcher installer filename?

For v2.1.6, the setup file is balenaEtcher-2.1.6 Setup.exe. The release also lists balenaEtcher-win32-x64-2.1.6.zip as a separate portable archive.

The Bottom Line

Download Etcher from etcher.balena.io, install the Windows x64 build, and use it only with a compatible bootable image. You do not need to format the target first, but you must verify the selected drive because flashing permanently replaces its contents. For a Windows 11 installation USB, use a Microsoft-supported tool instead.
