Godlike.Host offers hosted V Rising servers with its own game panel, SFTP access and free DDoS protection, if you would rather not host it yourself.
The direct SteamCMD route uses the V Rising dedicated-server app (Steam app ID 1829350), not the player client (app ID 1604030). On Windows, install SteamCMD, log in with anonymous, choose a server directory with force_install_dir, and run app_update 1829350 validate. Start the server once to generate its settings templates, then keep edited copies in the server’s save-data Settings folder so updates do not replace them.
Linux is less straightforward. Community instructions install the Windows server build by forcing SteamCMD’s Windows platform and running it with Wine (sometimes under xvfb-run). A native Linux build and official Wine support were not established, so treat that route as community-supported and verify compatibility after each game update.
What you are installing
V Rising has two separate Steam applications. The ordinary game client is app ID 1604030; the dedicated server tool used by SteamCMD is app ID 1829350. Installing the client does not create a dedicated server, and installing the server tool does not give you a playable client.
The commands and file locations below reflect procedures reported by community setup guides. App ID 1829350 should be checked against the current Steam listing before you deploy a public server, because the available package and launch files can change with a patch.

Choose a platform before you begin

If your priority is the fewest moving parts, use Windows. Choose Linux only if you already operate Wine-based services or need a Linux host and accept that the support status is unresolved. Managed hosting is the practical alternative when you do not want to administer a server at all.
Windows: install the dedicated server with SteamCMD
1. Prepare a controlled install directory
Download SteamCMD from Valve’s distribution and extract it to a directory you control. A commonly used example is C:steamcmd. Create a separate destination for V Rising, such as C:VRisingServer. Keeping SteamCMD and the game files in predictable, non-temporary directories makes upgrades and backups easier.

- Do not install into a location where Windows or security software routinely blocks writes.
- Allow enough free storage for the server files, future updates and your save data. A community hosting guide lists 20 GB for one server, but that figure is not independently verified and should not be treated as a hard minimum.
2. Open SteamCMD
Run steamcmd.exe from the SteamCMD directory. SteamCMD will update itself if necessary and present its command prompt. The commands below are entered at that prompt, not at an ordinary Windows command prompt.
3. Log in anonymously
login anonymousThe dedicated-server package is reported to support anonymous download. You should not need to enter the credentials for a personal V Rising account for this installation step.
4. Select the installation directory
force_install_dir C:VRisingServerReplace the example path with the directory you created. On Windows, use the full path and keep the directory consistent between updates; changing it later can make it appear that the server files have disappeared when they are simply in another folder.
5. Download and validate the server files
app_update 1829350 validateapp_update downloads or updates app 1829350. The validate argument asks SteamCMD to check the downloaded files and reacquire files that do not match the installed build. The first run can take longer than later updates because the complete package must be downloaded.

6. Leave SteamCMD
quitSteamCMD returns to Windows. The dedicated-server files should now be under the directory supplied to force_install_dir. If SteamCMD reports an error before completing, keep the destination unchanged and correct the reported permission, connectivity or path problem before trying the same update again.
First launch: generate the settings templates
The installation does not contain your finished server configuration. Run the example start script included with the downloaded server once. The purpose of this first launch is to let V Rising create its default save-data structure and settings templates; you can stop the process after it has completed initial creation.
The generated templates are found under:
VRisingServer_Data/StreamingAssets/SettingsCopy the templates before editing them. Maintain your editable copies in the save-data Settings folder used by the running server rather than relying on the copies inside the installed program directory. This separation protects your settings when SteamCMD replaces or verifies program files during an update.
Configure the server safely
ServerHostSettings.json: identity and networking
Edit your copy of ServerHostSettings.json for host-level options. Community guides identify this file as the place for items such as:

- network ports;
- the player-slot limit;
- save-data behavior;
- whether the server is visible in the public server list; and
- RCON-related settings.
Keep the file valid JSON. Preserve quotation marks around text values, use commas only between properties, and make a backup before each change. A single syntax error can prevent the server from reading the file.
ServerGameSettings.json: rules and progression
Use ServerGameSettings.json for gameplay rules. Examples mentioned by community documentation include PvP versus PvE behavior and the timing rules for castle damage. Decide these values before inviting players, because changing fundamental rules later can alter the character of an existing world.

Automatic wipes and ResetDaysInterval
One community guide describes ResetDaysInterval as the setting for scheduled automatic wipes and says that 0 disables them. That behavior is not independently confirmed here. If you use the setting, test it on a disposable world and verify the current build’s documentation or in-game behavior before relying on it for a live community.
Ports: resolve the conflicting defaults
Published community guides disagree about the default ports. Some list UDP 9876 and 9877; others list 27015 and 27016. Because those values conflict, do not copy a port pair from a guide blindly.
- Open the generated
ServerHostSettings.jsonand identify the port values in the build you installed. - Allow those exact ports through the Windows firewall for the server executable.
- If players connect from outside your home network, forward the same ports from your router to the Windows machine’s local address.
- Restart the server after changing a port and have a remote player test the listing or direct connection.
If a server appears to start but nobody outside the host can connect, first compare the configured values with the firewall and router rules. A mismatch is more likely than a need to open every port named in an older guide.
Linux: install the Windows build through Wine
Community Linux guides do not establish a supported native Linux server. Their common approach is to force SteamCMD to download the Windows platform and then execute that Windows build under Wine. One guide explicitly states that Stunlock does not officially support Wine. A Linux host can therefore work, but it is a compatibility project rather than an officially documented deployment.
1. Install SteamCMD and Wine
Install the Linux SteamCMD package or extract the Linux SteamCMD client in a directory you control. Install a working Wine environment capable of running Windows server executables. Headless systems may also need a virtual display; some community procedures launch SteamCMD or the server through xvfb-run.
2. Force the Windows platform in SteamCMD

quitUse an absolute Linux path that the service account can write to. The override must be present when downloading; otherwise SteamCMD may select files for the host platform instead of the Windows package that Wine requires.
3. Launch with Wine and generate files
Run the downloaded Windows server executable with Wine, using the example launch script or equivalent command supplied with the package. On a machine without a graphical session, apply the virtual-display wrapper recommended by your Linux distribution or guide. Start once to create the default save-data and settings templates, then copy and edit the two JSON files exactly as on Windows.
4. Plan for patch-related breakage
A game update can change the Windows binaries, Wine compatibility or required runtime components independently of SteamCMD. Keep the previous server directory and save-data backup until the new build has started successfully. If the current patch stops the Wine route from launching, check Stunlock’s current notes before assuming the problem is your configuration; the native Linux status remains unresolved.

Hardware and operating requirements
A hosting-provider guide lists at least 6 GB of RAM, two CPU cores and 20 GB of storage for a single server. The source and measurement conditions are unclear, so treat these as unverified planning figures rather than guarantees. Real capacity depends on player count, world activity, operating-system overhead, logging, backups and whether other services share the machine.
- Reserve additional storage beyond the initial package for save data, update downloads and backups.
- Use a stable network connection if players will join from the internet.
- Monitor memory and CPU during busy sessions instead of assuming a listed minimum will cover every population.
- Keep the operating system, SteamCMD and Wine (if used) patched, but preserve a known-good server directory until the new build is tested.
Updating without losing your world
- Stop the running server cleanly so the latest world state is written.
- Back up the save-data directory and your edited
Settingsfolder. - Open SteamCMD and run
login anonymous. - Set the same
force_install_dirused for the original installation. - Run
app_update 1829350 validate. - Start the server and confirm that it reads the copied settings from save data.
- Check ports, server visibility and a test connection before announcing the update to players.
Do not edit only the templates inside VRisingServer_Data/StreamingAssets/Settings and assume those edits are permanent. SteamCMD validation can replace installed program files; the save-data copies are the durable configuration location described by community setup instructions.

Common failure points and recovery
SteamCMD downloads the wrong files
Confirm that you used app ID 1829350, not the client ID 1604030. On Linux, confirm that +@sSteamCmdForcePlatformType windows was supplied before the download. Remove only an incomplete temporary download after preserving any save data, then rerun the update in the same destination.
The server starts but uses default settings
Stop the process and check that your edited files are valid JSON and are located in the save-data Settings folder, not only in the installed template directory. Recopy the original templates, apply one change at a time, and restart after each correction.

Players cannot connect
Compare the configured ports with the generated file, the host firewall and the router’s forwarding rules. Because community guides publish two different port pairs, using a remembered value from another installation can silently direct traffic to the wrong place. Test locally first, then test from a network outside the host’s LAN.
Linux launch fails after an update
Separate download problems from Wine problems: first run SteamCMD validation, then test the Windows executable under Wine without changing the JSON files. Review current Stunlock guidance and the Wine community notes for the new build. There is no confirmed native-Linux fallback in the material available for this procedure.
Self-hosting versus managed hosting

Managed hosting is not required to run V Rising, but it is a sensible alternative if maintaining Wine, Windows firewall rules, router forwarding and patch recovery would be more work than your group wants to take on.
